Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Tumblr media
Let me preface this please by saying: I am just an idiot on the internet. But when I want to gush, I like to gush.  I want to talk about why SNW works so well for me. There will be spoilers for S1 and mention of things seen in trailers and promos for season 2.
This show pulls off something that the Abrams films did well, and perhaps this show does better: It engages nostalgia without wallowing in it. The nostalgia invoked here isn’t a game of “how many Easter Eggs can we fit in an hour of television” or a contest to see if the most call backs to other series can be made. It is its own identity that leverages nostalgia to remind you the universe this is in, while still going, well, boldly in its own direction.
It’s not just aping previous incarnations of Trek with it’s soundtrack-though there are places where it appropriately drops a motif, and for me that works. Yes, we get the ‘Amok Time’ fight music, but we get it in a scene which falls completely in line with this younger Spock’s character, dreaming as he is wrestling with his duty to his Vulcanity and his Humanity.
When Sam Kirk shows up, it’s not because “hey look everyone it’s SAM KIRK!” He’s not only an interesting member of the crew we get to explore in ways we haven’t before (who knew he was basically Guy Fleegman?), but also setting up the eventual and inevitable introduction of Jim Kirk.
Are there maybe places where the show goes a little too far with those callbacks?  Sure- I’m still not sure where they are going with the Sybok thing. And despite how much I adore the character, and see some interesting internal conflict based on it, I’m not sure really if La’An really needed to be a descendant of Khan Noonien Singh.
What I don’t see is storytelling being shortcut BECAUSE of nostalgia or callbacks. This show feels like and is obviously rooted in TOS, but it’s willing to stretch the shared characters without them going OUT of character, and it’s willing to show you the Star Trek perhaps we would have had if Gene Roddenberry and Gene Coon had a lot more money and tech at their disposal...but those are just trappings.
The Human stories here are what makes it Star Trek. So even in places where I might have preferred something a little different, I never get the feeling the writers are just playing Trek madlibs to sketch out their story. We see things that from the chronological perspective make sense to be present, and we see plenty of new we haven’t seen before.
Yet it feels fresh, contemporary ALL WITHOUT HAVING TO RESORT TO GRITTY. It’s an unabashedly upbeat drama, proud of its heritage without being utterly reliant on it, and carving a space on TV counter to so much GRIMDARK around it.
And so far what I see in the previews of S2 look to want to do the same. From straight comedy with Boimler and Mariner showing up, to a solid courtroom episode that I would assume ends with an acquitted Una as she appears throughout the trailer. I hope they keep it up. Like the Kelvin movies, there’s a love here for the source material as a foundation. But this show reigns in the willingness to roam a bit and stays firmly in the Classic Trek mode. Here’s hoping Season 2 keeps it up.

Logic - Vinyl Days ALBUM REVIEW
Tumblr media
Logic’s retirement from music was very much short lived but he “ended” on a really great note with No Pressure, which was definitely a return to form and easily one of his best albums. I was a bit confused with the release of Bobby Tarantino 3 as it sounded exactly like what Logic said he was steering away from on No Pressure but he later clarified that the project was a bunch of leftover and only came out to help him get out of his Def Jam deal—which is what it sounded like. Vinyl Days marks Logic’s final album on Def Jam, which he talks about heavily on the album, especially on the song Sayonara which is a big thank you note. It’s very much similar to his Last Call song he made on YSIV fashioned after Kanye’s Last Call and J. Cole’s Note To Self. Like the title suggests, Vinyl Days is all about sampling and taking things back to the essence of hip hop’s roots, which Logic has always championed with the Young Sinatra mixtapes. Logic has never been ashamed to show his influences, which I see nothing wrong with especially because the point of the album is that Logic is having fun making the kind of hip hop he grew up on and fell in love. The love for J Dilla and Madlib is quite clear on songs like Tetris and Quasi and pays homage to groups like Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, and Wu-Tang Clan, on songs like Bleed It, Rogue One, and Porta One with RZA. The album plays like a mixtape as there are plenty of J Dilla sirens as well as Funk Flex drops—who acts as the hype man throughout the album as if he was premiering it live on the radio. It’s a pretty cool idea and adds more to the classic hip hop spirit of the album. Logic still sounds like Logic and he does not run out of bars on the album. His flow is always top notch and his punchlines and wordplay are on point as well. It’s very different from the way he was rhyming on No Pressure as that album was more conceptual and this album’s concept is much more freeform which is a nice change of pace as some songs are brief displays of lyrical exercise, such as the song BLACKWHITEBOY where Logic spits so many bars that it’s hard to keep up. Though Logic pays a lot of homage to his inspirations, he still makes plenty of time for more original sounding songs like Clouds which sounds like classic Logic. My one issue with that song is that the Curren$y verse with the different beat seems like it was tacked on at the end for no reason. It would have made more sense if he rapped on the same beat. Logic does rap a lot for the sake of rapping but there is more focused content on the album such as the song Therapy Music with Russ as they both share their perspectives on what therapy has done for them while also dropping plenty of hard bars. The soulful beat on the song Breath Control with Wiz Khalifa also sounds like a mix between vintage Logic and Wiz while the drums remind listeners of their previous collaboration Indica Badu. Early Logic collaborator C Dot Castro reunites with Logic for their first song together since 24. Not only does Logic show up to rap, but his impressive guest features did not hold back with some amazing verses such as Nezi Momodu whose verse was so great, making for the best first impression ever. Action Bronson’s verse is one his best in recent memory and Royce’s verse has such incredible rhyme schemes that it takes multiple replays to catch all of it. AZ’s verse shows that he is sharper than ever and Blu’s verse on Orville shows why he’s one of the best. The only things I really didn’t like about this album were the length as it is obnoxiously long, the many voicemails left by different celebrities that make up the interludes messing with the flow of the album, Like’s verse was too short and The Game’s verse didn’t really fit the song despite it being very good. I love how Logic gave each featured guest the perfect beat for them to rap over, leading to my next point which is that the production is fantastic. It’s nothing new for Logic or in general but it is great quality classic boom bap with great chopped samples and loops. The hints on this album to his next album College Park have me curious about what Logic’s independent career is going to look like because Vinyl Days is an excellent way to leave the label he’s been signed to since his first album and marks that Logic’s place as a true student of hip hop who is free to experiment has been solidified whether you like him or not.
Fav Tracks: Tetris, In My Lifetime, BLACKWHITEBOY, Clouds, Therapy Music, Ten Years, Orville

Lots of really fun stuff in this week's drop, including new stuff from Tinashe, a really cool 90s R&B vibe from new-to-me artist Ariel, Denzel Curry and Method Man over a Madlib beat courtesy of Your Old Droog, new Tiron & Ayomari, another single from Beth Gibbons upcoming solo album, and so on. Plus, don't sleep on the Bonus Beats section, which has Hardlore's hour long chat with Madison Watkins after her recovery from Year of the Knife's horrific car crash. I legit got a little misty seeing her so excited to get back out there.

Dispatch-001
Saturday night with a pot Darjeeling and nothing more to do than just flying away with all the things that crossed my way this week—shiny toys, blinking gadgets, ill-designed comic books, records lost in clouds. Readings. Stuff you can buy, for what else is left to do?
#1
Just now listening to three songs from James Brandon Lewis' upcoming album Eye of I with Chris Hoffman on Cello and Max Jaffe on drums. Sounds amazing, free every now and then, thoughtful and swinging, like a melancholy boxer. Will be back for the whole thing, drops next Friday, 2/3.
#2
Wout van Aert for the victory. Cyclocross can be pretty predictive if only one of the Big 3 is competing. They truly are above all the rest. That said, today was my first ride out of the year, far to late but all the more enjoyable. Remco blew San Juan, Nairo still in tha game—for now.
#3
Stay True by Hua Hsu (Huascene) is a read that caught me by surprise. It's the kind of book you want to read in all night while listening to your favorite music, or maybe an album that the book brought back to mind. Although Sonic Youth have not been mentioned (yet), this is the band that is always lingering around the back of my mind while riding through the pages. And because of my one-band-one-album habit back in the days, Sister is the record of choice. But anyways, this is just one of the many rabbit hole opened by the book, but deep inside, it is about something completely different, i.e. friendship in a form that might actually only exist in the early twenties, when you are still too young to write your biography but actually live through all the stuff that will make up the bulk of it. And this is exactly what this is. But, as a memoir, it's not a biography per se. It is also written in memory of an unlikely friend.
I bought the ebook while I was at the airport in Atlanta, Georgia with some time to kill. I was on my way back from an in-person job interview, and to finally get to this book now seems like a perfect fit for what felt like a final break away into adulthood. During my interview, I could feel that the new role would demand responsibility and leadership, vision and engagement—the youthful cynical disengagement seemed out of place. I did not think that Stay True would capture this change so adequately, at once outspokenly so and then also in terms of the story it tells, indirectly. This change makes me proud and sad at the same time. I feel like the place I interviewed for would be a great fit for me, somewhere where I could make a splash and have influence and work on my publications and career. But I also miss the cynically recluse me, the student who can only attain this role because he does not have any responsibility yet. Stay True locates this break a bit earlier (when Hua Hsu finishes college, he was the same age that I started), but that is another story. And not important at all.
Then, of course: The book is written quite beautifully. I was interested in it because I know the author's writing on music from the New Yorker (wonderful essays on both J Dilla and Madlib, if I remember corrctly), and the style of the magazine is definitely something that deeply influences how the book is set up (I am thinking of the theoretical interludes that comment and contextualize the narrative without explicitly referring back to it). But it also has its very own vibe and feel, something that is simultaneously laid back and urgent. It is not, however, nostalgic; rather, the breaks and tumbles of the narrative, the development that it displays and the constant change all make each earlier phase seem complete. As we would constantly build cocoons and emerge in a new form that does understand, but ultimately leave behind its former self. This peaceful relation with the time's passing certainly puts one topic front and center: death. Our struggle to let go. More, I hope, next week.

Album most listened to this week: Cassandra Jenkins, An Overview on Phenomenal Nature. Soothing, unsettling. And too short.

To hear some of the feedback, you’d think critics would have given the shirts off their back for the new project. Gimmick or innovation? It doesn’t matter - The Ecstatic, released in June on Downtown Records, is proving a style statement unto itself, earning the 35-year-old Brooklyn native some of the best reviews of a career that blossomed with his work in the late 1990s with Rawkus Records crew.

Perhaps the only development more surprising than Mos Def’s re-ascension to the hip-hop summit - some 10 years after Black Star, his collaboration with Talib Kweli, foreshadowed icon status - is the fact that he’s one of the first artists ever to have an album released as a T-shirt.

Put a brick inside that Xerox, when I print ‘em a page. Hey throw em in the back, jack hi, dig ‘em a grave. Joe Budden was chief among them, although, his record right after, Kamikaze, was received far more positively. Yelawolf Put these muthaf-ckas in a box and I send ‘em away. As it was previously reported, when Eminem released Revival, much of the hip-hop world criticized him and the new songs. The rapper joked that he's 40-years-old old now, and there's no reason for him to be dwelling on the past. It's clear Joe is much older and wiser these days, a fact he, himself, has recognized. More importantly, the rapper added, he's not rapping anymore so yelling at Eminem and Paul Rosenberg wouldn't be that entertaining for him either. The former rapper went on to say that there are more important issues happening in the world, and it's best to stay level-headed and continue focusing on what's important. Budden went on to say that nobody cares about the beef anymore either, including Eminem, him, and Slaughterhouse.Īccording to Budden, he and Eminem are focused on different things in their lives right now. Wobz14 on Top 14 Most Anticipated Hip Ho…įollow bakin' fresh! on WordPress.Joe joked that he was getting ready to come in the room and scream at "Paul Rosenberg" for leaking the track, but that's not the best way to go about it, he argued. Eminem truly is a rap God and this 6 and a half minutes proves that he is the greatest rapper alive! truly amazing!Ĭheck the full CXVPHER below and be sure to watch from start to finish, I guarantee it will be the best thing you hear all year. Every line that Em spits is unbelievable, his flow in next level (especially the last 30 seconds holy fucking shit!) and his wordplay is just unheard of. Finally we are left with six and a half minutes of pure epicness from the one and only Eminem aka Slim Shady aka Marshall fucking Mathers. Royce shows that he’s a class above most with his packed metaphors and killer flow proving that he is one of the best out there at the moment. Ol head said reality is fake an fakes the new real Nuttin but. Verse 1: Joe Budden Mic check, mic check, mic check, mic check Mic check, 1, 2, 1, 2. Joell Ortiz throws in a polished performance however  it’s not long enough for him to shine and have a proper effect. Baby few dudes aint worthy like me You know I keep somethin pretty by me. I just can’t get into him, his voice, what he says I’m just not feeling it and I will never understand what Em sees in him but hey that’s just my opinion. Now Yelawolf has never been a favourite of mine and I don’t think his verse does much to change that. Joe Budden’s up next with a much slower flow however he definitely doesn’t disappoint with a solid performance spitting real shit. Crooked I kicks things off with a rapid flow, spitting straight fire which completely dominates the next 2 minutes. In preparation for the release of SHADY XV Eminem, Slaughterhouse and Yelawolf have turned the heat up by dropping some of the craziest bars I think anyone has ever heard. So it seems like it’s nothing but love in the Shady Records fam! Check out Slaughtermouse below and cop All Love Lost on October 16. If you’re loving this track than make sure you head over to iTunes and pre-order the album as you will receive Slaughtermouse as an instant download. The track is produced by none other than araabMUZIK who provides a chilled and somewhat spiritual beat which fits perfectly with Budden’s deep lyrics. Slaughtermouse will feature on Budden’s upcoming album All Love Lost which is scheduled for an October 16 release. He also gives praise to Royce and expresses how much joy it gave him to see him and Em get back together with Bad Meets Evil saying ‘When Bad Met Evil, nigga who was happier than me?/ You woulda thought it was my album and I was on that shit’. Throughout the track Budden spits some emotional bars comparing his life to Em’s and asking the Rap God for some advice. Royce even took to twitter to confront the fellow slaughterhouse member saying ‘I heard you dissed me and em on your album… you sure you want that problem?. Well either there was never such a track or Budden has thrown it in the trash because his latest track titled Slaughtermouse is an open letter giving nothing but praise to his Shady Records boss Eminem. It was only last month we were hearing rumours that Joe Budden was about to go in on Royce and Em with a diss on his upcoming album.

Bandana freddie gibbs album cover
Tumblr media
At 16 tracks, it occasionally feels a touch too indulgent, but that’s easily forgiven when you wonder how many more records of this quality we might get if more of hip-hop’s key figures were as open-minded as these two. The superflousness of superlatives aside, his 2019 album, Bandana the. The latter is a standout that doesn’t just feature Killer Mike and Pusha T, but challenges them to match Gibbs and Madlib. A half-decade ago Freddie Gibbs and Madlib finished, mastered, and packaged Pinata, an album whose songs had been trickling out on EPs for more than three years by that point. The beats, they said. But that sort of still-working retirement never even crossed Freddie Gibbs mind. The two flip the switch between moody aggression on Massage Seats to hazy West Coast throwback mode with Palmolive. MadGibbs is an American hip hop duo formed in San Francisco, California. The duo is composed of Gary, Indiana-based Freddie Gibbs rapping and Oxnard, California native Madlib producing. There’s a similar spirit of genuine collaboration in evidence on Bandana, defined by the same sort of giddy stylistic back-and-forth that, at its best, is a thrill. Gibbs’ raw, uncompromising lyrics became more reflective, while Madlib gravitated towards gritty, boom-bap backing. The long-awaited followup to Freddie Gibbs & Madlibs Piata collab album released in 2014 is finally. Still, Piñata was an unlikely success, not least because it felt as if both men allowed themselves to be pulled into the other’s creative stream. Freddie Gibbs & Madlib Bandana Keep Cool/RCA Records. Madlib’s production, meanwhile, usually reflected the sunny climes of his native Los Angeles, as well as his fascination with making off-kilter beats out of obscure samples. After all, Gibbs was a no-nonsense street rapper from hardscrabble, small-town Indiana. As far as common ground went, that was about it. Not only is Freddie consistent during this project, but Madlib is as well.
