Hofmann through to quarterfinals in senior’s 10-ball
Tumblr media
Timo Hofmann (GER) advances to the quarterfinals of the 10-ball individuals with a 7:3 victory over Espen Andersen (NOR)
Today in the round of the last 16 players senior’s 10-ball competition of the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors & Ladies 2019, Espen Andersen encountered Timo Hofmann. Both players came all the way through the winner’s round and had some good results already. In the beginning, the match was quite open. The match was determined by several serious mistakes since both contestants seemed to be under a lot of pressure. They missed easy shots but Hofmann managed to get himself together first. After six racks played, the score was tied at 3:3. Hofmann came up with his normal game and consequently took rack after rack from Andersen who seemed a bit helpless at times. The Norwegian was not able to win another rack which meant that Hofmann sailed through to a nice 7:3 victory over Andersen. This victory booked the German a seat in the quarter-final of the 10-ball seniors which will be played tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET. His opponent will be Sascha Specchia (SUI), the runner-up in the straight pool competition.
In the ladies’ 10-ball competition, the two German players Karin Michl and Susanne Wessel made their way through the winner’s qualification round. Michl took down Ine Helvik (NOR) 5:1 while Wessel defeated Nathalie Rohmer (FRA) 5:2.
Later today, the team competition was started. One close match in the winner’s qualification round of the seniors was the encounter between France and Portugal. Sergio Silva took the first point for Portugal with a 7:1 victory over Betrand Deloriol in 8-ball. Then, both of the other matches went hill-hill at the same time. It was Henrique Correia to snatch the second and game-winning point for the Portuguese by winning his 10-ball 7:6 over Michel Natali. At that time, Manuel Pereira was at 7:7 in 9-ball with Gregory Bobee.

Meet the Brands Giving Old Fabrics New Life Through Upcycling
Canadian Julia Grieve pioneered the idea of upcycling when she founded Preloved 25 years ago; its offerings include T-shirts, sweaters and loungewear made with swatches of upcycled denim and wool. But despite the brand’s longevity and industry kudos, Preloved’s eco-minded ethos was eclipsed by the fast-fashion giants that dominated the 2000s.
Now that the frightening facts about the environmental and ethical impacts of the garment industry have become inescapable, repurposing fashion has another opportunity to take hold, even at the designer level. “Upcycling is not something that is usually associated with luxury; however, I think this is changing,” says Natalie Kingham, fashion and buying director at MatchesFashion. “Brands such as Germanier and Chopova Lowena have shown that they can be considered incredibly fashion-forward in the luxury space and still have a focus on sustainability.”
Whether it’s humble denim, vintage rugs or glittery lamé, there’s no limit to the textiles that today’s designers can breathe new life into. Here are some fashion brands that are upcycling their way into our hearts:
M Missoni
PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF m missoni
In the fall of 2018, Margherita Missoni became creative director at the previously licensed M Missoni. “Before accepting, I started thinking about how I could give it a point of view while keeping it part of the Missoni world,” she says.
She visited the storied brand’s archives and discovered a wealth of materials from its home decor line. The Spring 2020 collection features jackets and coats that incorporate MissoniHome archive fabrics from past decades and sweaters that are made with upcycled yarn.
For upcycling designers, managing expectations is almost as much work as the designing itself. “I’ve never worked on a collection like this—nobody has,” notes Missoni. “At the beginning, it was quite difficult for everyone to adapt—and it’s still difficult. When you make a sweater with upcycled yarn, the first 100 are going to be in one colour; the second 100, the stripe will change to a different colour. The people who sell need to understand that, the people who buy need to understand that and the people who produce need to understand that.”

A post shared by GERMANIER (@kevingermanier) on Nov 12, 2019 at 1:40am PST
When Charlie’s Angels star Kristen Stewart appeared on the red carpet for the film’s L.A. opening last fall, there was something more outstanding about her outfit than its bling factor. Stewart was clad in a cocktail dress slathered with upcycled Swarovski crystals by Paris-based designer Kevin Germanier. But unlike some who flaunt their ethical practices to entice an environmentally mindful clientele, Germanier stresses that aesthetics come first in his designs. “I never use sustainability as a marketing tool—I never emphasize the fact that I upcycle,” he says. “I’m not here to educate people or give a moral lesson to someone; my job is to make beautiful products. I’m a designer.”
Germanier sources fabrics at places such as the Marché Saint Pierre and says he’s grateful for all the vintage vendors and people who offer him materials to use in his collections. “Collaboration and the community are extremely important,” he says. “I’m really blessed that people are reaching out to me.”
CALLA

Paris-based Calla Haynes, who grew up in Toronto, found a way to express her creative inclinations in a sustainable way after putting her eponymous brand on hiatus in 2015. “I wanted to do something meaningful with all the fabrics that meant so much to me, and I was also a bit overwhelmed with all the dead stock,” she says about the custom-print textiles that were left over when she shelved her line. Meeting minimum orders and the “wishful thinking” of producing too much in the hope of selling it are two reasons why designers have a hard time escaping excess, says Haynes, who has also worked for Rochas and Nina Ricci. “That’s the strange reality of this industry: We accept having all this waste.”
Haynes initially sent her leftover fabrics to Morocco to be made into Boucharouite rugs but has since expanded her upcycling endeavours to include babouche slippers, which are made from well-worn vintage Moroccan rugs. “It’s funny because those rugs are almost a double-recycling thing since technically Boucharouite rugs are made from old fabric. They’ve already been recycled into rugs, and [now] they’re being recycled into shoes.”

For Montreal-based designer Courtney Pedersen, her reliance on upcycling was born from a tension between loving fashion and loathing its wastefulness. “I studied fibre arts at a small school in Nelson, B.C.,” she says. “That was a lot of years ago, but even when I was doing that, I was pretty concerned about the environmental impact of the textile and garment industries.”
Pedersen’s collection consists of one-of-a-kind garments made from materials sourced in thrift shops like Value Village. “I’ve found everything from silk dévoré to fine cotton gauze to linen there,” she says. “I’ve even used bedsheets. Some people might be squeamish about that, but I think in today’s age of being very aware of what’s happening environmentally, it’s a good thing to be open to.”
Peterson Stoop
Photography by Wessel Baarda
Amsterdam-based Peterson Stoop approaches sustainable design in a holistic way, addressing not only the inherent waste factor but also how harmful elements of creating clothing and accessories can be. Co-founder Jarah Stoop notes that the outlook she shares with Jelske Peterson evolved after they broke into the industry the “traditional” way in 2013. “At the time, we were designing bags and shoes,” she says. “We didn’t really know what direction it would take us because we both came from art school and had all these idealistic ideas about starting a brand—or maybe [they were] unrealistic ideas, because we thought we could produce everything in-house and make a really big collection.”
Now the duo uses existing materials to make upcycled shoes that boast some familiar characteristics—several of the styles use pieces taken from worn-out Nikes and Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars—and their “remastered” wares are a testament to the level of craft and ingenuity that’s routinely ignored in a world of mass manufacturing. “I think a lot of people don’t realize that things in shops have been made by somebody,” says Stoop. “They can be made by a robot, but most things have been touched by 20 or 30 people who have all done little steps in the process. That’s also why we make what we make: to really show that they have been made by hand.”

Review for fan edit for Attack of the Clones (Hal’s)
I decide to give my review of a fan-edit for Hal 9000's Episode 2: The Approaching Storm (Attack of the Clones) Most fans consider the original film the worst one, even after Episode 1. The politics and the talking wasn't really interesting, just like the first film, but adds cringworthy moments like the romance scenes and Anakin being a drama whiner. Not to mention, the CGI in the film looks more fake and uncanny valley than Rogue One, despite the time gap between both films, and most of the movie is blue screen. Many things had plot holes and didn't made sense on several scenes. However, there is a way to rewatch this film and not hate it, and want the film to be as best as it possibly can. Hal 9000 Episode 2: The Approaching Storm has arrived in Holiday 2017. To me, this made the film from the worst to a decent one. I would like to explain why this fan edit made the film better. I enjoyed some scenes from the actual film, but those scenes were made more interesting. Anakin is a lot less dramatic and whiny, and you really care about him more, and Padme is made to be at least more interesting. The romance scenes was edited well that you can see why they love each other. They used few deleted scenes that covers the better portion between Anakin and Padme. We see her family and it's nice to see a family. I like how the whole thing about Jedis can't fall in love was lessened, and only mention once. Anakin twisted the conversation that made it seem like it's not important. The edits for both of them on Coruscant and Naboo are better. Anakin does not give a creepy stare or whine in front of her all the time. We get to see the fountain in Naboo and he and Padme discussed about it. The scene where they are at a field with lots of flowers and animals was the only scene where the romance seems legit, but with the other better moments added, it made you care more about them at least. They did kiss by the lake, the same scene where he DOES NOT mention his hate about sand. The scene was made more like sunset and they both slowly kiss instead. On the investigation on the bounty hunters, I like how it was made without the silliness on the Zam Wessel chase. Obi-Wan is pretty much the best main character of the prequel trilogy, but on this one, his investigation is made more mysterious with better pacing. There is less talking fillers and had no other jedis being clueless about the missing planet, Kamino. There is no scene with younglings and Yoda about the missing planet, and I think a quicker pacing to find Kamino is done better. Obi-Wan went straight forward to went there to meet Jango Fett. He talked to Mace Windu from a deleted scene in the hangar about Anakin and since he is still a padawan, they need to made sure he is doing his job right. There is a less filler on Kamino or silly moments. Silliness isn't always a bad thing, but too silly can be uncomfortable, but I barely found them on this edit. I'm glad Boba Fett was not mentioned that he is a clone, and that he isn't as annoying as he was in the actual film. The small space battle is made more interesting. Also, Boba Fett isn't a clone because it is not said. Back to Anakin, I did wish him saying that Jedis don't have nightmares are cut away, but there is no way to do that, but still have their relationship handled better. At the rescuing of Anakin's mom, this made me feel more sad now that his character is handled better. It is sad at first, but on this edit, you cared more about how he feels. I'm happy that the scene with Yoda and Mace Windu was cut because they didn't do anything about Anakin after knowing his dangered feeling. We still get the iris wipe to Obi-Wan going to a building where the droid factory is, and the wipe looks great. Most importantly, the scene about him hating sand people and blaming Obi-Wan for his mom's death is entirely cut. We know his hate dialogue is a meme, but with the scene deleted, we're sure nothing is missing with that cut away. By the time where Anakin and Padme landed on Geonosis, the droids stay at the ship while the other two are the only ones going inside the building. There was no droid factory scene, but we went straight to a deleted scene where Anakin and Padme have a meeting with Count Dooku, to set Obi-Wan free. He sentence them to death since they won't join with him and that Obi-Wan is also sent to death with them. With this edit, it was made more understandable as to how they are sentenced. I did enjoy the battle arena when I saw it as a kid. On this edit, no scenes with C-3PO or R2-D2 are there. The green alien who talks with a racial accent talks less. Even Jar-Jar has less lines at the beginning. We do see the clones arriving, and they cut out a dialogue for Yoda when arriving. Also, I may not notice this, but I do find the idea of the clone war at Geonosis interesting, even though it can look CG at parts of it. My best edit on that segment is they did not have Anakin yell too long after Padme fell. Obi-Wan only said to not let his emotions get in his way, and to think what Padme would do on her task. The edit looks better because it did not made Anakin uncomfortable to see, and all he mostly did is listen to him. On the duel between Count Dooku and Yoda is very shortened, to where they only use the force and Dooku's lightning. He sent straight to tear a pillar to crush Obi-Wan and Anakin, so Yoda only uses the force on that whole scene instead of fighting, so he looks more spiritual. That's all I can think about from the film. Most of the edits are made well to where I find the film decent. I would watch this again, and even for someone who wants to see Episode 2 again should see this without the cringe. This my first time seeing a fan-edit of a prequel film completely on my own time. I heard most fans who are into fan edits say that the best prequel edit and for episode 2 is Hal 9000's. The Approaching Storm seems like a better title because it's the rise of the Clone Wars and also the Separatists. The fan edit did made the film better, and would be watchable if you decide to see this movie again. Is TAS the best film and almost as good as the Original Trilogy? No, not quite, but I would say that it's decent and is pretty much a successor to Attack of the Clones. It ranges from All Right to Decent, but I choose decent since I am open to good fan edits and wanted a better view for the prequels and sequels. Also, there is still some things that will never be solved and will still leave certain questions, like how would the Jedis still not see how Count Dooku is evil in the beginning, or why did Jar-Jar give the Chancellor emergency powers. A fan edit of a terrible film can't completely solve all issues at once, but it has to be there to not have anything missing or cut too short. Yes, the CGI on some parts looks obvious, but they're not that bad as much as Speed Racer or Mars Needs Moms. I don't mind for this fan edit just to focus on the point of view for how the fan edit film change the pacing and improvements to the film. The own pacing and direction is mostly what would be a better film. The dialogues are less bland and show a bit more emotion. What if this is the actual film in the first place? Assuming few more edits to the film by the main studio if this is the case, then no one would have the outrage of the film and wouldn't be considered the worst. Hayden Christiansen would've got a better reputation and so would Natalie Portman. It may even be considered the best of the prequels if only focusing this fan edit, including Episode 3 in some ways. TAS does show most of the necessary scenes and add the better flow, so critics would've praise a bit more on the story as well as caring more about the main characters. The politics are still there, but it is a bit lessened so it seems to show more on the plot. Also, no one would've criticize the romance scenes. The problems in TAS would still be there due to the film itself, but it would've literally gone up by a grade and would've be considered watchable for general audience and maybe fans. Reviewers would say that this is the better film than Episode 1 and may tie in with 3 or better. Is TAS a better film that The Last Jedi? Well, it depends on the fan because I don't personally hate the film in any way. I did at least enjoy it. I won't go too deep with Episode 8, but as a film, with film directing and emotions, it does a better job. The characters, if you've been seeing Episode 7, you wouldn't get full answers to all the new characters. Rose and Finn doesn't have a lot of romance scenes as much as Anakin and Padme in TAS, but they have more action adventures. Captain Phasma is cut too short. Luke is pretty much the character I cared the most, and unlike any prequels, we do see force projection, which I thought it was amazing for a master. Yeah, the characters in TLJ can be hit and miss, but TAS is at least average to good for me, except for very few like Jar-Jar. What both films have in common, even vanilla Episode 2, is the torpedo sound effect where no sound is played for a short time before an explosion is heard, and the new film is the longest. I don't mind the porgs, and a bit less Jar-Jar is at least better. If you hate the film or really disappointment on multiple reasons, then TAS might be a better film for you. Some TLJ haters now think the prequels at least have something or better. Yeah, I get both sides about the debate on TLJ, but I still have no hate on this film, just a bit hard to not think about anything involving the hatred and how it's handled since the film's release. As for TAS, I would at least say that for people who are into fan edits, and want to find a better prequel fan edit and for Episode 2, this film is the best one for both categories. I am looking forward to see a guy named Ivan Ortega has an upcoming fan edit for TLJ. He;s been making it since Spring, and wanted to fix the entire film by removing the negatives. He has many footage of how he has edited each scenes and they're on youtube. He said his rough cut is finished, so he's doing a final cut that will be finished by the end of the year if you are into fan edits and wanted more out of TLJ in a positive way. A lot of scenes would've been useful, so he is adding them. That's what recently got me to find the best edit for the prequels. What about The Force Awakens or Rogue One? TFA seems to be better since the directing is better. However, the story itself is similar to the very first film, so TAS wins on the story only. Rogue One, maybe TAS has better character development as well as story pacing, but the new one has more action pack and space battles, and has the memorable ending. I have no idea about the fan edits for Episode 1 and 3. I am looking for one that is the best by fans and what is best for me. I don't mind anything that is referenced for the Original Trilogy. I may look into HAL's Episode 3: Labyrinth of Evil. Episode 1, it is between Q2: Fall of the Jedi and HAL's Cloak of Deception. Let's see which ones I would end up choosing for both films.

Phoenix Comic Fest 2018 Masquerade was .... an ordeal. I arrived 2 hours prior to the show, and gained entry to have amazing seats. Seated front row center waiting patiently for the show to begin when the fire alarm sounded calling for evacuation of the building. For more about the fire alarm incident read our article on it. When we arrived for the press conference the next morning, Square Egg Entertainment management, informed us of the new time for the masquerade. This however didn't mean that there would be the same turnout of participants and audience. Turnout for contestants was down 40% leaving holes in the set list and meaning they would not perform except at prejudging. Many of the participants were either unable to attend or their costumes were damaged in the aftermath. The following is the rescheduled Masquerade.

Siehe als historische Einführung zu diesem Thema Helen Epstein, Children of the Holocaust.

Skimm This PLOT TWIST THE STORY Last night was the Oscars. “Moonlight” won best picture. “La La Land” did not. WHAT HAPPENED? Bonnie and Clyde had the wrong envelope, and announced “La La Land” as best picture. The film’s team came out for their speech. Then…never mind. “Moonlight” was the real winner. Host Jimmy Kimmel blamed Steve Harvey, then himself. PwC - the accounting firm that oversees the ballots - apologized for the not-so-classic mix-up and said they’re investigating what happened. WHAT ELSE HAPPENED? Kimmel - aka the Candy Man - spared no one in his opening monologue. Not even Meryl. Definitely not Mel. And he’s still not friends with Matt Damon. A bus load of tourists got punked. Things got political, too. Kimmel thanked President Trump for taking the spotlight away from that time “it seemed like the Oscars were racist.” Then he did some live tweeting. Meanwhile, the audience had all the feels during the In Memoriam part of the show. Jennifer Aniston - who introduced the segment - got choked up while talking about Bill Paxton, the actor who passed away at age 61 due to surgery complications the day before. WHO WON? “Moonlight” took home best picture and best adapted screenplay. “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle is now the youngest best director winner ever. Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar. Emma Stone, Casey Affleck, and Viola Davis picked up the other acting awards. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi won for best foreign film, but boycotted the show to protest Trump’s travel ban. WHO WON THE RED CARPET? Viola Davis and Naomi Harris brought the heat. The artist formerly known as The Rock was feeling blue. Emma Stone, Nicole Kidman, and Jessica Biel channeled Oscar gold. WHO DIDN’T? Casey Affleck officially, officially needs to shave. Dakota Johnson brought her Victorian apron. theSKIMM For a while it looked like the Oscars were going to be pretty predictable…and predictably looooong. Instead, it ended with one of the biggest plot twists in Hollywood history. Skimm This REPEAT AFTER ME... WHAT TO SAY WHEN THE PERSON CUTTING YOUR HAIR KEEPS FROWNING... Yeah, this isn’t going to work out. Yesterday, President Trump’s pick for secretary of the US Navy, Philip Bilden, pulled his name from the running. That’s because he didn’t think his business ties would pass an ethics review. He’s the third of Trump’s nominees to drop out, after labor nominee Andy Puzder and Army secretary nominee Vincent Viola both bowed out in recent weeks. Who’s also been shown the door? Some members of the media. Last week, the Trump administration blocked several media outlets (CNN, The New York Times, Politico) from an off-camera briefing with Press Secretary Sean Spicer. This is not normal. It’s unclear why these outlets were banned. But this comes as the White House has been pretty open about how unhappy it is with media coverage of Team Trump’s alleged ties to Russia. Then, over the weekend, President Trump said he’ll sit out this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner - the one where the press, the president, and a comedian roast each over lots of champagne. Trump’s the first president in decades to RSVP ‘no’ to the event. So…not getting warmer. Skimm This WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO JUST GOT HER FIFTH SPEEDING TICKET... So you think you’re a NASCAR driver? Yesterday, Kurt Busch won the Daytona 500. It’s like the Super Bowl for race car fans, except it kicks-off the start of racing season. After years of viewership taking a deep dive, NASCAR tried to amp up the excitement by having drivers race the 500 miles in three stages - instead of one long turn ’round and ’round the track. The change-up was supposed to make things more dramatic. Yesterday’s race involved multiple crashes, including a 16-car wreck. And Busch eked out the win in the final lap. Drama? Check. Skimm This WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR TEAM GOES ON AN OFFSITE... The Dems spent the weekend doing trust falls too. They elected former labor secretary Tom Perez to be the new DNC chairman. He was in a tough race against Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) - who was the guy supported by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). After Perez won, he tapped Ellison to be his right-hand man. TBD on whether they’ll have the deeply divided party singing kumbaya. Skimm This SKIMM MONEY ROL: Stands for return on life.
