Orchid Update!
breaking news! the first blossom of 2022 is here!
Tumblr media
after a quiet winter of growing three (3) stalks, Philippa has turned out to be the early bloomer of the group, with this one opening on Monday.
many more blooms are coming soon! all but one of the other orchids have at least one blossom spike growing now.
the orchids also have a new neighbor...
Tumblr media
on the right is the new philodendron I got as a holiday gift. I'm calling him Felix.

My frat brother, my pal
Brother, like many family terms, is inherited from Proto-Indo-European.  It descends from Old English brōþor, from Proto-Germanic *brōþēr, in turn from Proto-Indo-European *bʰréh2tēr, a root preserved in a great many Indo-European languages, and a particularly popular example in introductory historical linguistics textbooks.
In Latin, this became frāter.  PIE *bʰ typically became /f/ word-initially but /b/ elsewhere.  This became French frère, source of English friar.  With the adjective suffix -rnus, this became frāternus “brotherly”.  And with the further addition of the abstract noun suffix -itas, the noun frāternitas “brotherhood” was formed.  This is the source of the modern English fraternity, which is most commonly used today to refer to collegiate social organizations, and often shortened to “frat”.
In Sanskrit, this root developed into bʰrātr̥, which developed into Romani phral, still meaning “brother”, which, via Anglo-Romani phal, became English pal.
A similar etymological development may be behind the word “buddy”, one possible etymology of which is a distortion of “brother”

SUPER SPECIAL Orchid Announcement!!
congratulations to
SHIREEN
on completing her bloom yesterday!
Tumblr media
with only one spike, Shireen nonetheless managed to produce 15 blossoms for a truly stunning display! I'm a little concerned about the number of leaves she dropped in the process of blooming (3 out of the 8 she had at the beginning of the season), but she seems to be in good health, so it's probably nothing to worry about.
but wait, that's not my only news!
welcome
XOCHITL !
Tumblr media
I bought this orchid online through a fundraiser for an orchid club, and my parents kindly agreed to make the pickup since I had work that day. when I made the purchase, I didn't know what color the blossoms would be (most plants in the sale were donated by amateur breeders with little documentation of their hybrid lineage), but the listing photo showed a magnificent 6-branched flower spike. the buds in the photo were light green, suggesting that the flowers would be white, green, or yellow, rather than pink or purple. as it turned out, the blossoms are indeed yellow with stunning red patterns.
unfortunately, when Xochitl arrived she was in a sorry state. she desperately needs a larger pot, and the stakes she came with were much too short to support her 20 inch main spike. worse, she was bone dry, with withered, discolored leaves and drooping flowers. I was worried some of the blossoms would drop off before she could complete her bloom.
however, after several days of careful watering (and a much needed restaking), Xochitl is doing much better! her leaves are getting back to a healthy state, and nearly all her blossoms are back to normal. she even opened a couple more! she still needs a larger pot, but I don't want to add any additional stress until she's fully recovered from her severe drought experience. (Nadia needs to be repotted too, so I'll probably move Xochitl into Nadia's old pot, since the sizing looks about right.)

it's Orchid Thursday! thanks everyone for all the love for Xochitl on the last post (especially the nice comments from @canisbeta @paradife-loft and @sjureidolives) !
you'll all be pleased to know that she's doing well! she finished her bloom without dropping any blossoms -- or leaves, unlike Shireen, who has dropped 3 leaves this season, but is growing a new one, so that's fine I guess.
anyway, I got Xochitl staked up a little better today:
Tumblr media
a happy plant! her leaves have a much better color and shine than they did when she came home. oh, and if you're curious just how many blossoms she has, the full count is 25 across 6 branches! (4+5+3+4+3+6)
she still is in urgent need of repotting. based on how well she's adjusting, I think I can probably go ahead and set her up with a little more foot room at the end of the month.

it's time for Orchid Thurs-- oops, it's Friday (and already Saturday in some jurisdictions)!
anyway here's a quick check in with the phals!
Tumblr media
Shireen opened another blossom, bringing her up to 10 now. I think she's finally done growing additional buds, of which there are 5 more to go. She will take the prize for most blossoms on a single spike this year!
Tumblr media
meanwhile, Philippa got a little confused and opened a blossom facing backwards relative to all her others. oh well. she has just one more bud to open (weird green thing at top on the left) and it's getting close, so expect another breaking news update sometime on the weekend or early next week!

**BREAKING ORCHID NEWS**
congratulations to
NADIA
on reaching full bloom today!
Tumblr media
with a staggering 21 blossoms (10 on the spike to the left as photographed and 11 on the right) Nadia is currently the reigning champion on total number of flowers. will she be dethroned by the time all my orchids complete their bloom? unlikely, but only time will tell. keep checking back to find out!

it's once again Orchid Thursday and we have a very special announcement!
congratulations to
ASTRID
upon reaching her full bloom today!
Tumblr media
she has 6 blossoms on each of this year's primary spikes, 1 on a secondary branch, and 1 rebloom on last year's spike, for a grand total of 14! her final blossom is the uppermost one on the far left edge of the photo. you can see that the petals are still curved inward as the bud just opened this afternoon while I was at work. (I held off taking the weekly photoshoot this morning in hopes that she would do the thing by the time I got home, and my faith was rewarded!)
and now let's check in on the others:
Tumblr media
Nadia has just one bud to go (at the top of the spike on the right in the photo, directly in front of the bamboo stake), and so many blossoms in tight proximity that the newer ones are all at odd angles.
Tumblr media
Philippa has two buds remaining (at the top of the taller spike, blocked from view by the uppermost blossom). The front spike in the photo was flopping around precariously when I moved the pot for the photoshoot, so that's why it's at a weird angle. but I later managed to get it mostly stable and vertical again. also, a couple feet below the frame, she has a new leaf starting to grow!
Tumblr media
and finally, Shireen has at least 7 more buds to bloom because she keeps growing more! she has also decided to recycle some of her oldest leaves (not pictured, but they are in the process of withering and turning yellow), presumably to direct more nutrients toward blossom production. she got fertilized this week as per the usual schedule, but like... whatever. plants are weird, yo.

Orchid Update!
I liked doing the mostly Thursday schedule but going forward I'm not necessarily gonna have content to post at regular intervals anymore, since the flurry of the main blooming season has subsided. so, updates may be sporadic.
anyway, we have two bonus blossoms open!
Tumblr media
Nadia's new flower is in the center of the top row. Astrid's is the darker color one in upper center of the cluster. I've noticed that late season blossoms are often a little different in color from the early ones. you can't really tell in the photo, but Nadia's new blossom has a little bit of yellow on its lower petals. Nadia has one more new bud and Astrid has two, so we'll wait and see if they have distinctive color too!
meanwhile, in other window garden news, four of the five juniper sproutlings adjusted to potted life and are doing well:
Tumblr media
don't worry, they're not wilting! they bend like that naturally because this species likes to grow close to the ground and spread sideways.
now for the big surprise:
Tumblr media
this bouquet of alyssum is from the beginning of the month! it is still fresh and living and, yes, growing roots. I swear I'm not doing this on purpose! I just happen to have a perfect greenhouse in the corner of my room. or maybe I'm a wizard, who knows...

it’s Orchid Thursday Sunday!! I took the photos as usual but forgot to post them. oops.
anyway, you may notice that some of the blossoms appear to have changed color since last week. they haven’t, I promise. this just goes to show how much the lighting conditions can distort the way an object (or person) appears in photographs.
changing up the order this week, here’s Shireen, now with 5 blossoms:
Tumblr media
Astrid, 5 + 3 + 1 = 9 blossoms:
Tumblr media
notice I finally got decent length stakes for her. also another bloom has opened since the photo, so she’s now up to 10.
Philippa, 7 + 4 = 11 blossoms:
Tumblr media
and finally, Nadia, 7 + 7 = 14 blossoms:
Tumblr media
hopefully I’ll post in a more timely manner next Thursday. until then, I wish all my Jewish followers a very pleasant Passover!

orchid Thursday! late post this week because I work into the evenings now. let’s count the blossoms!
Philippa (P. amabilis x sanderiana): 5 + 2 = 7 (both spikes are blooming now!)
Tumblr media
Nadia (P. ‘Lioulin Violin’): 5 + 4 = 9
Tumblr media
Astrid (Phalaenopsis x Doritis hybrid): 4 + 2 + 1 = 7
Tumblr media
(Astrid desperately needs better stakes so the flowers on her main spikes aren’t all slumping into a giant pile. Apparently none of the local garden stores carry orchid stakes. They have orchids, potting bark, potting moss, orchid fertilizer... but no appropriately sized stakes. It’s very weird.)
and finally, Shireen (Phal. hybrid): 3
Tumblr media
in the upper left background you can see a couple of Nadia’s blossoms, which are very similar in appearance to Shireen. this leads me to suspect that Shireen (who, you may recall, is a rescue the neighbors discarded) is also a hybrid of predominantly P. equestris and P. amabilis descent, possibly even a close cousin varietal.

orchid time!
as some of you know, I have a collection of phalaenopsis orchids growing in my room. here they all are:
Tumblr media
from left to right (yes I named them all cuz quarantine got to me):
Astrid (unspecified Phalaenopsis x Doritis hybrid)
Nadia (Phalaenopsis ‘Lioulin Violin’, a multigenerational hybrid primarily of P. equestris & P. amabilis descent)
Shireen (unidentified Phalaenopsis hybrid my dad fished out of the neighbor’s trash bin)
Philippa (P. amabilis x sanderiana)
it’s the beginning of the blooming season for them. they’ve all put in a lot of work growing their flower spikes all winter long. Astrid has 4 budding spike branches, and Philippa’s spikes are 3 feet tall!
Philippa already has two palm-size blossoms fully open (what an overachiever!):
Tumblr media
and Nadia’s first blossom is beginning to open as well:
Tumblr media
(also featured in background: the juniper bouquet I collected as a holiday decoration back in December that I accidentally allowed to grow roots. I’ll need to be potting those babies soon, I guess.)

orchid update! deliberately postponed (and then unintentionally delayed another day and a half, oops) in order to highlight TWO new open blossoms on Shireen:
Tumblr media
this brings her up to 13, with 2 left to open. she has the most flowers on a single spike... for now.
why do I say "for now"? well, both Astrid and Nadia have suddenly decided to grow more buds! why? because they can, I guess. I didn't do anything in particular to encourage it. but in any case, it looks like there will be plenty of new content for future orchid posts!

Orchid Update!
so Astrid has "finished" her bloom again:
Tumblr media
why the quotation marks? well, yet again one of her branch tips sprouted some new tiny buds. so... who knows what she'll do next.
meanwhile, I had to do an emergency repotting for Shireen. my dad had done her previous potting, and at the top of the pot there was a lot of very loose material, and because the pot seemed to drain very quickly, I assumed that the potting medium was the same all the way through.
wrong! it turned out that beneath the top two inches of loose bark was a lot of fine soil, which was retaining a ton of water. when Shireen started dropping a lot of blossoms seemingly prematurely, I poked around to see if I could find any apparent problem. what I found was some early stage root rot and a few slime molds growing. (the slime molds were pretty cute tbh, but they don't belong on my orchid.) as it turned out, Shireen's roots were pretty close to overgrowing the pot anyway, so it's just as well I took care of this now.
here's Shireen settled in her new digs:
Tumblr media
she's continued to drop blossoms, which is disappointing but not surprising, considering I put her through a shock. but she's been very healthy so far otherwise, so I can't really complain.

**STOP THE (ORCHID) PRESSES!!**
we have yet another exciting announcement!
Congratulations to
PHILIPPA
on reaching full bloom today!
Tumblr media
(hope you enjoy the darker background. I think the white flowers look more vivid this way.)
with 8 blossoms on her "short" spike and 9 on her tall spike for a grand total of 17, Philippa's bloom may not be the earliest or the most prolific, but it certainly is the largest! she stands over 38 inches tall from root crown to petal tips, and her blossoms average 5 inches across.
fun fact: I called my mom over to look at Philippa and she did a double take asking "that's real, right?" despite having seen the same plant in varying stages of growth.

orchid update! phalaenopsis blooming season continues to unfold.
Philippa (P. amabilis x sanderiana) has three blossoms open on her first spike now:
Tumblr media
this spike will have 8 blossoms total. her second spike is still growing (now officially 3 feet tall!) but already has 9 buds forming.
meanwhile, Nadia (P. ‘Lioulin Violin’) has two blossoms open, with another adjacent bud about to unfurl:
Tumblr media
there are another two buds about to open on her second spike (not pictured). it looks like between the two spikes, Nadia will produce at least 22 blossoms this year!
Shireen (unknown varietal, not pictured) is still quietly growing her single blossom spike (it will have at least 10 buds), but I recently noticed a new branch budding off it as well. it remains to be seen whether that side branch will develop this season, or remain dormant until next year.
lastly, Astrid’s (Phal. x Doritis hybrid) first blossom has opened:
Tumblr media
also note in background that the unexpectedly root growing juniper sprigs from my holiday bouquet are now properly planted in individual pots. (they are Juniperus horizontalis, and at least four will be available for adoption soon if anyone in northern or central California is interested.)
