The best of Manipur Series – I
Tumblr media
It was the end of October in the year 2016 and we were in the Nubra valley with our parents for the weekend. The evenings in Leh had started to get really cold by that time. I was strolling in the quiet and dimly lit path of the guest house after quite an eventful day. We had spent an year already in this stunning place and we were expecting our posting anytime soon. Leh is beautiful and I had the most magical experiences of my life while staying here. I don’t quite remember what I was thinking when I heard the husband calling out for me. He announced our posting is out and it was somewhere in Northeast! I was vigorously praying for Sikkim or Meghalaya to every God I could think of. And after a few phone calls, I came to know it was someplace in Manipur. No points guessing, I was disappointed. And my welcome in Manipur had made it only worse. On the 10th of December when I took my first flight to Imphal, there were hardly any people on board. The airport in Imphal was tiny and deserted. I grabbed my luggage as fast as I could and ran to find the vehicle.  As I got in the vehicle and it zoomed past the closed shops and empty streets, I could only see a few people burning tires at the side of the roads chanting anti-government slogans. I was petrified and cursed my luck for landing me here!  It was the time of the economic blockade and the whole state had come to a standstill. But that was 3 years ago and today when I am getting posted out of Manipur all I know is that I am going to miss this place dearly! They say ‘every place you go becomes a part of you‘ and Manipur shall remain very special to me forever! Which is why this blog series is special to me… and I just hope to do justice to the beauty of Manipur through these blogs.  I have been asked so many times about the places to visit in Manipur and how many days should be enough and even what are the places that were worth visiting or the festivals worth experiencing. And through this series of blogs, I wish to give you an idea about the ideal places to visit and come up with an itinerary and help you experience the best of Manipur! Let’s start with how to reach Manipur – The best way to reach Manipur happens to be by air. The flight connectivity is really good and the cheapest and shortest flight is from Kolkata. The nearest railway station is Dimapur, which is almost 206kms and it takes 7 – 8 hours. The road condition is awful! I visited Dimapur a few times and each time traveled by road. And every time I ended up looking and feeling like a zombie at the end of the journey. But the construction work has been going on to make it better. However, there is also a proposal of getting railway tracks extended till Imphal, which will be a great positive change for the state and it will also help flourish tourism.
Tumblr media
I have always taken a flight to Manipur. And the first view of Manipur from up above is stunning! Lush green hills and plains with paddy fields and water everywhere… it’s a beautiful riot of green and blue. You get the first glimpse of the unique Loktak Lake from the flight itself and it looks beautiful and huge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imphal, the capital city – Imphal the capital city of Manipur is where the flight lands you. It’s a beautiful valley and has a lot of things to offer to a tourist. Imphal is not just the capital of Manipur but it also happens to be the center point of this state strategically. All the other places are situated in and around Imphal and can be traveled within a day. But before you move out of Imphal I suggest you explore this beautiful historical city. It has a lot to offer and you shall get a glimpse of the culture of the Meiteis of Manipur, who resides only in the valley. The city has some really vibrant market places like the Thangal Bazar, Paona Bazar, DM College Road, Uripok. Imphal also has the very unique woman’s market, Ima Keithal, popularly known as the Mother’s market. The market is dominated by beautiful women dressed up in their traditional innaphis and phaniks and streaks of sandal paste on their forehead. Check out the blog below - https://herlittlespace.com/2017/05/27/welcome-to-the-mothers-market-in-imphal/ This tiny little state in the Northeastern region has always been known for its rich cultural heritage, art and culture, and sports. And Manipur has produced some really eminent artists whose work is worth witnessing. And if you are an art lover you must visit the RKCS Gallery and The Three Mothers Art Gallery in Imphal. Check out the blog below - https://herlittlespace.com/2019/03/06/rkcs-art-gallery-and-three-mothers-art-gallery-in-imphal-manipur-is-a-treat-for-art-lover/ Standing tall right in the center of the Imphal city is the Kangla Fort Gate. And while roaming around the city, the gate is hard to miss. Kangla Fort remains of the most popular tourist places in the city and recently keeping in mind the flourishing tourism, the Government has started arranging Night Markets and concerts in the fort complex on weekends. There are a number of places to visit in Imphal city. I have been getting quite a few questions about the places to visit in Imphal city itself and if you have the same query the blog below will help you get an idea about them. https://herlittlespace.com/2019/04/10/the-best-places-to-visit-in-imphal-city/ Now that Manipur has gradually become a tourist-friendly place, I see quite a lot of people planning on visiting this beautiful little state in the Northeast. I too get messages asking for an itinerary or the ideal time to visit and various other questions regarding the place and after every query, there is always a "Please suggest a few nice and cozy places to eat. We would like to spend an evening in some beautiful eatery with a good vibe and good food" I can totally relate to these questions and all I can think of are cozy and fancy little cafes. And if you are a cafe lover like me, Manipur won't disappoint you. And to help you find some of these beautiful cafes easily I wrote a blog a few days ago and a lot of travelers messaged me saying they found it really helpful. Music to my ears! So, if you are visiting Manipur and you have such an evening planned for yourself this blog might help you choose a place. I have also mentioned the places where you can find authentic Manipuri thalis in this blog, so do check this out! https://herlittlespace.com/2019/06/06/these-beautiful-cafes-in-manipur-are-all-about-coziness-and-good-food/ From Imphal, the nearest and one of the most amazing places to visit in Manipur is the Indo-Myanmar Border town Moreh. The road to Moreh is one of the most beautiful in terms of scenic beauty. You also pass the very stunning Tengnoupal Village which was my home for two and a half years. So in the next blog in this series find out all about Moreh and Tamu(the border town of Myanmar), Namphalong market, places to stay and what to eat! Read the full article

Not Your Rescue Project: films from the sex worker rights movement, reclaiming our stories, addressing HIV/AIDS
Join Moral High Ground Productions and friends for this exciting set of films during the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam. 10:45-11:55 on 7/26/2018, the Film Screening Room, the Global Village, AIDS2018.
Welcome to Amsterdam with an excerpt from Raising Red Umbrellas in Africa (2012, Kenya) and Behind the Window (2017, The Netherlands), a video conceptualized by Emy Fem, Cat D, Vera Rodriguez and Nayra Green and filmed at My Red Light, which is run cooperatively by sex workers. Learn more about how sex workers organized a Freedom Festival in Kolkata in 2012 to avoid/protest US travel restrictions affecting sex workers in the film The Honey Bringer (2012). Peel back the layers and go inside the US during the International AIDS conference with trendsetter Sharmus, via a 2 minute short called Sharmus Outlaw Speaks (2012, USA). We've planned a history section of this screening so we will not be condemned to repeat... oh wait on, some of these films sadly seem so 2018. Compulsive Practice (2016) is a compilation of the work of Whore Mother Carol Leigh. Major! (2015, USA, an excerpt) features our community member Miss Major Griffin-Gracy who has been fighting for the rights of trans women of color for over 40 years so we will remember, "how caring for each other can be a revolutionary act." A rare and thrilling screening of Prowling by Night (1990, Canada), a ground breaking work made with the participation of 21 sex workers, documenting police harassment and HIV prevention efforts. We end our history lesson with an excerpt from Our Bodies, Our Business (2016) remembering Andrew Hunter, Danny Cockerline and the whore who sold their car to be able to pay $500 to attend the 1989 AIDS Conference in Montreal. Recall the days when sex workers were locked outside the main conference, spoken about by a bunch of squares sitting smugly on a panel session, and watch whores fight back after being belittled by researchers and drug companies who got paid. History? It all sounds so familiar. We will work the Night Shift with Silver Rose (2018, Russia, an excerpt) and learn What You Don’t See (2017, Brazil) during sporting Mega-Events about trafficking hysteria. Creative Trafficking (2011, Canada) puts saving our souls in perspective with the Vivian Girls who are concerned about a very bad problem in Toronto. Musical interludes with the feisty return of The Honey Bringer (2012, Migration excerpts) --”exactly what risk does our freedom of movement pose to the world?-- and Whore Pride (2018, Australia).

India set to host 8th Theatre Olympics 2018
Delhi, 13th February 2018: Theatre lovers in India have a reason to rejoice! The country is set to host the largest international theatre festival – the 8th Theatre Olympics – for the first time, with participation from 30 countries in a series of performances to be held across India.

The festival will be concluded on 8th April 2018, with a grand ceremony at the iconic Gateway of India in Mumbai.
The theatrical extravaganza is being hosted in India by the National School of Drama under the aegis of Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The theme of the 8th Theatre Olympics is “Flag of Friendship” that aims to bridge borders and bring people of different cultures, beliefs and ideologies together through the medium of theatrical art.

Among the Indian theatre maestros are Ratan Thiyam, Alyque Padamsee, Rudraprasad Sengupta, M.K.Raina, Raj Bisaria, Bansi Kaul, Prof. Tripurari Sharma, Maya Rao and Soumitra Chatterjee.
The National School of Drama is the torchbearer of theatre in India and has trained some of the most respected actors and theatre stalwarts of all time. Established in 1959, it has a proud legacy spanning over six decades of theatrical perfection. Hosting the 8th Theatre Olympics adds another feather to the cap of this historic institution.
The festival is considered to be the biggest international celebration of theatre in terms of plays, participants, performances and number of days. During the festival, plays will be held in Agartala, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Imphal, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Mumbai, Patna, Thiruvananthapuram and Varanasi.

Through the youth forum of National School of Drama, “Advitiya 2018”, young voices are being channelled through street plays, music bands, short playwriting and theatre reporting. There will be a competition for short playwriting with cash prizes of INR 25,000, 50,000 and 1 lakh.
“I thank and congratulate the international theatre community for providing India with this grand opportunity. A country is recognised by the richness of its culture. Although technology has changed our lives, the theatre has its own identity, strength and importance. We would witness the world’s largest cultural confluence with 65 global productions. Theatre mirrors our lives and is a strong and powerful medium which intricately and beautifully portrays social issues on a larger platform. India is proud to host the 8th Theatre Olympics 2018 and showcase its cultural strength to the world.” says Union Minister of State for Culture (IC), Dr Mahesh Sharma.
“We are delighted that India has joined the league of nations who have previously hosted Theatre Olympics. Through over 300 iconic plays, India’s cultural prowess would reach new heights as the global carnival travels through India”, says Sujata Prasad, Additional  Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India.
“Art has been the earliest form of communication. Nothing gives an artist more delight than performing in front of an audience that appreciates art, no matter from which part of the world they come. In a way, theatre is a great equalizer and unites people of multiple cultures and traditions under one umbrella. We are extremely proud to bring the world’s largest theatre festival to India. During this 51-day long nationwide celebration of the 8thTheatre Olympics, we attempt to bridge the borders across countries through the call of theatre and engage in creating a global village,” says Dr. Arjun Deo Charan, Acting Chairman of National School of Drama Society.
Prof. Waman Kendre, Director, National School of Drama, whose vision made it possible to bring the world’s largest theatre festival to India, firmly believes that to regain the past glory of our nation we must make it the cultural superpower of the world.
“For the past 3 years, we had the dream to bring Theatre Olympics to India. The dream that we had seen has come true. Since we began to envision and achieve this feat, Dr Mahesh Sharma and the Ministry of Culture have extended wholehearted support to the idea and have played an instrumental role in making it a reality. Throughout centuries we have seen playwright like Shakespeare and Bertolt Brecht becoming a part of Indian theatre, while despite having our own extraordinary playwrights and theatrical figures, we are still to make a similar impact. This is a huge leap towards that direction of putting Indian theatre on the world map. We should be proud of our theatre legacy that is more than 2500 years old. The8th Theatre Olympics provides a unique opportunity for cultural exchange through the medium of theatrical art. With this international event, we wish to express our theatre practices, its variations, philosophies and the sheer strength of our texts, narratives and ways of presentation in front of a global audience. In return, we extend our arms to welcome the practices, ideologies and philosophies of visiting performers. The objective is to create a platform for conversation between Indian and global artists with an intent to enrich our collective understanding and expression of art,” says Prof. WamanKendre.
About Theatre Olympics
The Theatre Olympics was established in 1993 at Delphi, Greece. Being an international theatre festival, the Theatre Olympics presents some of the greatest theatre practitioners from around the world. It is a platform for theatrical exchange, a gathering place for students and masters, where a dialogue despite ideological, culture and language differences is encouraged. Since 1993, the Theatre Olympics has been held seven times in the following countries: Japan (1999), Russia (2001), Turkey (2006), South Korea (2010), China (2014), Poland (2016). The theme of the latest edition of Theatre Olympics being held in India is “Flag of Friendship”. This most awaited event of world theatre in India attempts to bring all the creative minds from across the globe to this ‘Natya Mahakumbh’.
