Downtown L.A.

Het L.A. van de Art Deco gebouwen, de hoogbouw.

Downtown L.A. wordt vaak vergeten door toeristen maar is echt de moeite. Rondom bevinden zich de diverse culturele wijken, het van de Polanski film bekende Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Ethiopia, Filippinotown, Thaitown en Little Bangladesh. Little Tokyo ligt daarentegen in Downtown, vlak achter de City Hall, het iconische Art Deco gebouw dat onder andere te zien was in L.A. Confidential.

Downtown is een typisch Amerikaans stadscentrum in schaakbordpatroon met genummerde straten en dwars erop liggende avenues.

Na een jarenlange verwaarlozing komt er terug leven in de stad. Je vindt er de legendarische Last Bookstore in een oud bankgebouw, met de horrorafdeling in de creepy kluis.

Ronddwalend zie je er de ene Art Deco hoogbouw na de andere, vaak met referenties naar een Spaans koloniale of andere neostijl. De Bradbury Building uit o.a. Blade Runner, en tal van oude cinema paleizen zoals The Mayan, The Million Dollar Theater,...

Eten kan je in de Grand Cental Market op Broadway, een plek met streetfood uit de diverse culturen van L.A., drinken in diverse speakeasy's.

Wat verder ligt het museumdistrict met een van mijn lievelingsmusea The Broad, een gatenkaasgebouw met binnenin moderne en actuele kunst. Daarnaast de Disney-concerthal van Frank Gehry, die ook het museum van Bilbao ontwierp. Nog iets verder het Dorothy Chandler-paviljoen waar vroeger de Oscars werden gehouden en het Ahmanson theatercomplex waar ik deze avond via een vriendin gratis een musical kan kijken.

Deze avond dool ik rond in L.A. met een local.

De stad is me niet vreemd meer. Voor het eerst voelt de stad aan als vibrante grootstad. Geen uitgestrekte stadswoestijn, maar een wereld op zich waar de wereld ook thuishoort.

Ik laat me leiden naar een geweldig Italiaans restaurantje waar er naast pizza Hawaii, pizza Pepperoni (met salami i.p.v. paprika), of een Chicago Deeppan pizza of BBQ Chicken pizza ook nog twee andere gerechten uit de Amerikaans-Italiaanse keuken op het menu staan, broederlijk naast de authentieke keuken uit Italië: Spagetthi with Meatballs en Pasta Chicken Alfredo.

Ik besef dat ik hier een culinaire discussie op gang kan brengen. Vooral door de pizza Hawaii of Carbonara met roomsaus. Zelf geef ik over de eerste discussie altijd als antwoord: tomaat is ook een Zuid-Amerikaanse vrucht die nog maar 130-jaar in de Italiaanse keuken gebruikt wordt. Dus zwijg over die ananas. De Carbonara met room daarentegen is godslastering

Maar ik wijk af.

Een geweldige maître d´hotel begeleidt ons naar de terrastafels en charmeert ons bijna tot een dessert. Maar we moeten door. Nemen een Uber tot het theater waar ik voor het eerst in de States een musical zie, gebaseerd op een neokoloniaal Engels verhaal, The Secret Garden.

De rest van de avond probeer ik te gissen wie er echt Brits was of een zeer goede dialectcoach had. Een discussie die we opeens ook met een wildvreemde enthousiaste man hadden tijdens de pauze.
