Nel 1996 la febbre da blackmetal era così alta e contagiosa che infettò praticamente tutti (spesso in senso buono). Blackheim dei Katatonia evidentemente ne rimase profondamente segnato; questo lo si può capire dalle primissime foto promozionali della band, che incorporava un personalissimo mix di death, doom e black metal. Benché il loro mood fosse decadente e quasi gotico, le accordature delle chitarre erano aperte verso il blackmetal anziché gravi verso il death. Ad ogni modo sir. Blackheim nel 1993 decide di creare un progetto personale chiamato Diabolical Masquerade dove sfocia tutte le sue voglie più incontaminate di blackmetal creando una narrazione quasi teatrale, da grand-guignol; egli è il narratore di un mondo fantasy personale (un po’ alla stregua di Blashyrk degli Immortal) del quale descrive principalmente il clima freddo e invernale, le peripezie di questo viaggiatore-Sentinella, il riscatto dei mesi autunnali da regalare al mondo di Blackheim, i ricordi di battaglie svolte secoli fa ecc..

Il songwriting di tutto l’album è molto debitore delle chitarre, l’uso del tremolo quasi sempre alternato agli arpeggi ci fanno subito venire in mente i territori di Dance of December Souls ma con una decisa spinta sull’acceleratore (in tantissimi momenti è presente la doppia cassa e i blast-beat). La precisa produzione degli Unisound Studios richiama spesso i lavori del capo di casa Dan Swanö il quale, canta pure in “Under the Banner of Sentinel” prestando in modo forse un po’ goffo e decisamente 80s la voce alla Sentinella. Quindi un certo tipo di black metal fantasy e fiabesco si spoglia di qualsiasi aura satanica e violenta per assumere un tono narrativo che, grazie anche all’uso di synth, volge spesso lo sguardo all’heavy metal, ai raddoppi Maideniani di chitarra. Qualcosa di simile lo avevamo già sentito nel debutto dei Mörk Gryning e i Vittra dei Naglfar Questo è uno di quegli album che se l’avessi ascoltato più di venti anni fa probabilmente non sarebbe minimamente entrato nei miei ascolti preferiti e, forse, non lo è nemmeno ora. La mia è più una voglia di collocarlo, di dargli una giusta posizione. C’è comunque da segnalare l’evoluzione personale e schizofrenica di questo progetto, culminato con una colonna sonora di un improbabile film mai realizzato, sempre attorno alla vita del mondo dimmaginario di Blackheim.

Le duo de Minneapolis INEXORUM présente la dernière et la plus puissante sortie du groupe à ce jour, intitulée Equinox Vigil, qui est sortie le 17 juin 2022 via Gilead Media.

Fondé à l'origine en tant que sortie solo par Carl Skildum (gamme live Antiverse, Obsequiae), INEXORUM est rejoint par Matthew Kirkwold (producteur certifié RIAA, également de la gamme live Antiverse et Obsequiae). Inspirés par le NWOBHM des années 80 et l'intersection fondamentale entre le black et le death metal de groupes comme Mork Gryning, Dawn et Sacramentum, Skildum et Kirkwood ont créé un son intemporel qui leur est propre, mêlé à des thèmes de navigation dans l'expérience humaine, d'hypocrisie religieuse, de soi-même, la guérison, la science, la mort et l'environnement naturel entourant le duo dans le paysage du Minnesota.

Le duo a entériné une juxtaposition brutale mais délicate de violence et de mélancolie, qui sied magnifiquement à leur black metal mélodique avec des éléments d'atmo-black, de pagan metal, de folk, de death metal et de metal traditionnel, qui vont et viennent de manière si fluide tout au long des 40 minutes d'exécution. Les riffs sont pleins d'agressivité, et beaucoup de mélodies sont trempées de brouillard funéraire, de tristesse, mais l'ambiance générale de ce troisième album est paradoxalement édifiante.

Could be a symptom of the holidays being a bit of a gloomy time of year for me, or the weather being completely "freeze your balls off" cold lately, but I find that I've been in kind of a black metal mood.

That in mind: Here's Stormruler who seem to occupy a space somewhere between Dissection, Dawn, Mork Gryning, Hulder, early Satyricon, and Naglfar.

Atmospheric but not without riffs.

Vicious but not without melody.

Nostalgic but not stale.

Cold but not overly harsh.

Synths coated in enough reverb to keep all those fucking interludes just the right side of tolerable (at least they're short).

Copious use of acoustic guitar.

So, pretty much everything I could ask for in a 90's style black metal album.

23. Band You Didn't Listen to Until Seeing Them Live

There are so many answers here, I love getting into openers after the fact but the two biggest ones are probably Anthony Green and Valdrin. Obv i saw Anthony open for Thursday a few months ago with you and, at that point, I was really only familiar with Circa Survive, not any of his solo stuff which is most of what he played. and after his performance (which was incredible) I've listened to it much, much more. With Valdrin, they were actually a surprise last-minute addition to this black metal show (it was Mork Gryning and 3 other bands in this little church in Kentucky) me and metal club went to (they're local and were filling in for the first opener) and they fucking.... blew me away. absolutely incredible and now the tshirt I bought at the show is my battle jackets back patch <33 def recommend

28. Weirdest Concert Experience

Hm... I don’t have anything Super weird but when I saw The Ocean (and Leprous but we weren’t really there for them kdjhfhkjdsjfh) it was supposed to be this big group for metal club but nobody but me and the guy who was president at the time showed up. so the car ride there was A Bit awkward at the beginning. we ended up having a really great time though! The Ocean were really incredible live and it was one of my first metal shows, which was nice to go with someone I knew kinda ushering me into the shit.

I did also see Jinjer with my dad a few months before, which went great, but Suicide Silence did open and it was very funny to see my dad’s (old-school thrash guy who hasn’t listened to metal released in the last 3 decades) react to that. Surprisingly, he ended up liking it though, so again still not weird lmao
