The Boston Red Sox look to stay hot in a three-game series at home against the Tampa Bay Rays as betting favorites in Tuesday’s series opener.

The Boston Red Sox are 5-2 over their last seven games including a 2-1 series win over the Tampa Bay Rays last week. The Red Sox will try to earn another series victory over the Rays in a three-game series starting on Tuesday night.

Boston is a -131 home favorite on the MLB odds in the series opener at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. David Price is set to start for the Red Sox against Charlie Morton and the Rays as +121 road underdogs.

Tampa Bay Rays Betting Notes

Tampa Bay has won three of its last four games since going 1-7 over its previous eight. The Rays had a couple of uncharacteristically high-scoring games over the weekend, losing 10-9 to the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday and then winning by the same score on Sunday.

Charlie Morton will try to get the team’s pitching back on track; he enters this start with a 2.60 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. The Rays have won four of his last five starts.

Tuesday night’s total is set at nine runs. The OVER is 6-1 in Boston’s last seven games.

The Red Sox, Rays and Oakland Athletics are all less than two games apart in the standings for the second wild card spot in the American League. The Rays will use relievers to open their games against Rick Porcello on Wednesday night and Andrew Cashner on Thursday night. Despite owning an ugly 7.54 ERA in July, Porcello is a perfect 4-0 this month thanks to 14 runs per game of run support.

MIN @ BOS, 29th June (3-6, win)

I liked that game. That game where we took 3-of-4 from the Twins, who’d been quite hot when they got to Boston. That game where David Price got off to a shaky start, but settled down to get the win. That game where Mookie Betts did pretty much everything awesome you could think of. That game where the Sox came back from behind to win. That game where Hanley went deep on a ball I’m pretty sure was outside the strike zone that he had to sort of reach for to flick, if such a thing is possible, into the dead centre bleachers. I didn’t like that Pedey had to sit that game out because his knee was bothering him. I didn’t like that I kind of figured Pedey was pretty hurt and then he turned out to be pretty hurt. But overall, that was a game to like. To enjoy. To watch the highlights of over and over again (as much as one does with any late June game against the Twins).

Bright sides:

Mookie. Betts. Mookie’s not been entirely Mookie-like at points this season. I think his knee injury at the beginning of the season might’ve taken a bit more out of him than he let on. Last night, I feel we got the full Mookie for the first time in awhile, perhaps since 2016. He went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, a home run that would’ve been on the Mass Pike if it hadn't hit a light tower, a double that got stuck on the Green Monster’s random and pointless ladder, and made one of the better catches I’ve seen this year. He was the complete player last night, and was deservedly the photographed star of Win, Dance, Repeat.

Hanley. Hanley has been a mystery this season, and could very well be the key to stabilising the Sox offence, providing the long ball threat at the centre of the order they’ve been needing. Last night he reached outside the zone and launched a ball that seemed to defy physics. More of that, please.

JBJr went 3-for-4, scored one and knocked in one, and doesn't even seem to be streaky right now. He’s just good. Always rooting for him.

Lin added to his MLB hit total, going 2-for-4 and scoring once.

Deven Marrero got a hit. Feel that’s worth mentioning as he’s hitting a colossal .171.

David Price got off to a rocky start, giving up a run in the first and then another two in the fourth. But he sorted his shit out, man. Didn’t walk anyone, struck out 7 and only allowed three hits. I am firmly in the rooting for David Price to do well camp. I can’t stand the folks out there just willing him to lose. Fuck those guys. Price pitches well, we win. I’m on his side because he’s on my team. I don’t write his cheques, I just cheer loudly when he gets the K.

Craig Kimbrel got the save and lowered his ERA to 1.04. Which is good, because Joe Kelly’s at 1.07 now and it might be awkward if they showed up to the ballpark wearing the same stats.

We won!

Major Copper Producer Logs ‘Solid’ Q4/17 Results

Ralph Profiti, an analyst with Eight Capital, provided an update on this miner, including recent announced quarterly results and guidance.

In a Jan. 26 research note, Eight Capital analyst Ralph Profiti reported that Freeport-McMoRan Inc.’s (FCX:NYSE) “Q4/17 results were solid, with cash costs below expectations and adjusted earnings per share (EPS) at the high-end of consensus,” achieving a “positive” impact.

Adjusted EPS was a beat at $0.51, compared to Eight Capital’s estimate of $0.36 and consensus’ expectation of $0.49.

Copper production in the quarter was in line at 1,007 million pounds (1,007 Mlb). Gold production of 567 thousand ounces (567 Koz) exceeded expectations due to “higher throughout at PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), 178 thousand tons per day (178 Ktpd) versus our 159 Ktpd,” explained Profiti. Copper sales of 1,107 Mlb met guidance; gold sales, at 593 Koz, did not, coming in 5% lower. Unit net cash costs of $1.04 per pound ($1.04/lb) of copper were lower than the expected $1.07/lb.

Freeport-McMoRan maintains its guidance for FY18, which reflects an anticipated “high-gold year at PTFI,” the analyst indicated, with expected sales of 3.9 billion pounds of copper and 2.4 million ounces of gold. Cash costs are forecasted to be $0.97/lb. Capital spending guidance increased some, to $2.1 billion ($2.1B) from $2B. About $1.2B of that budget are allocated for the major Grasberg and Lone Star projects, specifically $850 million for the latter.

The company ended FY17 with less net debt than in Q3/17, $8.7B versus $9.8B, and this should drop further, Profiti purported. “We forecast net debt decreasing to $5.2B by 2018E.” These figures compare to peak net debt of $20.48B in Q1/16.

As for the latest on Lone Star, prestripping is underway, and first copper is anticipated by the end of 2020. The oxide project should generate “200 Mlb of annual production for ~20 years” and “advances the potential for development of significant sulfide resources in the long-term,” noted Profiti. “Lone Star presents a low-risk opportunity given its proximity to existing Safford infrastructure operations and is capital efficient at $9.4 thousand per ton ($9.4K/ton) of copper equivalent versus [the] industry average [of] ~$15K/ton.”

Profiti highlighted that potential value for Freeport-McMoRan exists in its exposure to rising copper and gold prices and its advancement of projects, including El Abra, Cerro Verde and Lone Star. Additionally, the miner “screens as one of the most disciplined capital allocators in the peer group.”

Eight Capital currently rates this mining company Neutral.

Major Copper Producer Logs 'Solid' Q4/17 Results

Ralph Profiti, an analyst with Eight Capital, provided an update on this miner, including recent announced quarterly results and guidance.

In a Jan. 26 research note, Eight Capital analyst Ralph Profiti reported that Freeport-McMoRan Inc.'s (FCX:NYSE) "Q4/17 results were solid, with cash costs below expectations and adjusted earnings per share (EPS) at the high-end of consensus," achieving a "positive" impact.

Adjusted EPS was a beat at $0.51, compared to Eight Capital's estimate of $0.36 and consensus' expectation of $0.49.

Copper production in the quarter was in line at 1,007 million pounds (1,007 Mlb). Gold production of 567 thousand ounces (567 Koz) exceeded expectations due to "higher throughout at PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), 178 thousand tons per day (178 Ktpd) versus our 159 Ktpd," explained Profiti. Copper sales of 1,107 Mlb met guidance; gold sales, at 593 Koz, did not, coming in 5% lower. Unit net cash costs of $1.04 per pound ($1.04/lb) of copper were lower than the expected $1.07/lb.

Freeport-McMoRan maintains its guidance for FY18, which reflects an anticipated "high-gold year at PTFI," the analyst indicated, with expected sales of 3.9 billion pounds of copper and 2.4 million ounces of gold. Cash costs are forecasted to be $0.97/lb. Capital spending guidance increased some, to $2.1 billion ($2.1B) from $2B. About $1.2B of that budget are allocated for the major Grasberg and Lone Star projects, specifically $850 million for the latter.

The company ended FY17 with less net debt than in Q3/17, $8.7B versus $9.8B, and this should drop further, Profiti purported. "We forecast net debt decreasing to $5.2B by 2018E." These figures compare to peak net debt of $20.48B in Q1/16.

As for the latest on Lone Star, prestripping is underway, and first copper is anticipated by the end of 2020. The oxide project should generate "200 Mlb of annual production for ~20 years" and "advances the potential for development of significant sulfide resources in the long-term," noted Profiti. "Lone Star presents a low-risk opportunity given its proximity to existing Safford infrastructure operations and is capital efficient at $9.4 thousand per ton ($9.4K/ton) of copper equivalent versus [the] industry average [of] ~$15K/ton."

Profiti highlighted that potential value for Freeport-McMoRan exists in its exposure to rising copper and gold prices and its advancement of projects, including El Abra, Cerro Verde and Lone Star. Additionally, the miner "screens as one of the most disciplined capital allocators in the peer group."

Eight Capital currently rates this mining company Neutral.

D-backs road underdogs at Braves on Friday betting lines

The Arizona Diamondbacks will try to re-group on the road against the Atlanta Braves this weekend, with the sportsbooks setting them as underdogs on the odds.

The Arizona Diamondbacks dropped their second straight game and their third game in their last four on Thursday against the Colorado Rockies. The Diamondbacks look to cut their losing streak short this Friday night in the first game of a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves.

Atlanta Braves

Atlanta finally got some offense going on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays, snapping out of a 1-6 slump with a 9-5 victory. The Braves now have a golden opportunity to win back-to-back games for the first time since July 2 sending Anibal Sanchez to the mound.

Sanchez is enjoying a career resurgence in his first year in Atlanta, leading the team to seven wins in his last nine starts and posting a dazzling 2.72 ERA and 1.04 WHIP through 11 starts this year.

Friday’s total is set at 8.5 runs. The OVER is 3-0 in the last three games between Atlanta and Arizona per the OddsShark MLB Database.

Potential thunderstorms are in the weather forecast for Friday, but hopefully they will be avoided so that this intriguing pitching matchup can take place uninterrupted. Over the weekend, Zack Greinke will face Sean Newcomb on Saturday and the two teams will head into the all-star break after a Patrick Corbin vs. Julio Teheran matchup on Sunday.
