In retrospect, my initial expectations of the results conflicted with my findings by the virtue of my naivety about the vast awareness, curiosity and openness from my sample groups previous experience to watching ASMR videos. The surge in popularity of ASMR online content explains the 100% confirmation in their familiarity with the genre, which then resulted in only 58.33% of the group admitting they had experienced sensory response symptoms. These results were to be expected, as not everyone is likely to obtain the same sensitivity towards artificial sounds and digital visual engagement.
In developing my interest into the current reliance on ASMR, and other meditative strategies when coping with mental health, I provided a 1-100 scale so the respondents could mark their current level of anxiousness. This was important to the survey as I wanted to use this personal insight to understand whether ASMR was calming for everyone, or just those prone to experiencing the sensations. As the results show, the average level of anxiety was 36% which provided a small passage of improvement for the results after watching the ASMR video.
Having analysed the initial levels of anxiety, I was interested in researching current reliable calming strategies when coping with stressful situations. In the results displayed below, it is clear that the most popular strategy was listening to music (41.67%) with the least being ASMR and other therapeutic videos (8.33%). The results suggest that ASMR hasn’t yet reached its highest level of potential in receiving exposure towards its desired audiences. With music being the most popular choice, it explains that accessibility and transportation is vital when appealing to the general public. As ASMR relies profusely on the multimodal functions of visualisation, the act of watching videos can be considered quite embarrassing if demonstrated in public. Imagine being on a bus sat next to a middle aged man and on his phone displays an ASMR video with someone pretending to give him a haircut - yes these videos do exist. In my last column I had written about the benefits of acupuncture and acupressure on the body. One of the body systems that benefit a lot from acupuncture is the musculoskeletal system. Our musculoskeletal system includes bones, cartilage, tendons and connective tissues. Our skeleton provides a framework for our muscles and other soft tissues. Together they support our body’s weight, maintain our posture and help us to move and do all our physical activities. Musculoskeletal disorders and the related pain are major cause of disability and suffering in all age groups, especially amongst seniors.
The common conditions that affect the muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones are osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, neck pain, lower back pain, herniated discs or slip disc, adhesive capsulitis or frozen shoulder, ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis and such others.
Acupuncture treatment for musculoskeletal issues is based on the theory that illness results from imbalances in energy flow, or qi, and fine needles are inserted at specific points on the body to correct these imbalances and restore harmony. This treatment addresses both the physiological and psychological aspects.
Acupuncture can provide excellent results as a viable alternative to drugs and surgery. It works very well for acute or chronic pain in the muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints. Patients who have experienced trauma and pain from a major accident respond very well to this treatment. Those who have acute pain get relief from the pain immediately but patients with chronic conditions generally require an extended treatment to experience a significant improvement in their symptoms.
Acupuncture points stimulate the central nervous system, which, in turn, releases chemicals to the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These biochemical changes stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical well-being. It also has the effect of constricting or dilating the blood vessels, hence controlling the blood supply as per the needs of the treatment. In response to the point stimulation the body releases vasodilators (blood vessel dilators) such as histamine which helps in reducing pain, decreasing oedema (water retention), improving mobility and addressing chronic complaints even for accidental injuries.
OSTEOPOROSIS
Osteoporosis is a chronic metabolic disease characterised by bones having mass loss, microstructural damage, becoming brittle, with declining strength and tendency to be fracture prone. It can affect anyone at any age, especially post-menopausal women because of decline in ovarian function and decreased oestrogen levels and in elderly men due to rapid ageing of the body. Low back pain or systemic bone pain, deformation of spinal column and bone fractures are the common complaints of an osteoporosis patient.
Osteoporosis is primarily attributed to deficiencies in the kidneys, since the kidneys are related to bone marrow production, which explains the important relationship between the kidneys and the bones, in acupuncture science.
Deficiencies in the spleen and stomach also play a role in the pathology of this disease since they are responsible for ensuring an adequate supply of qi energy and blood which is necessary to nourish the bones.
The clinical treatment of acupuncture for this disease is mainly to improve the qi of kidney meridian which has a direct effect on bones. The treatment can improve the hormone level which plays the role of an antioxidant, adjusts the hormonal imbalance, increases the formation of osteoblasts which helps increase bone density, prevents the occurrence of fractures, reduces pain and thus improves the quality of life.
OSTEOARTHRITIS
OA is the most common form of arthritis and the most common reason for hip and knee replacements. It involves cartilage degeneration and proliferation. OA of the knee is a major cause of disability among adults, which leads to difficulty in climbing stairs, walking and other daily activities which could also affect the mental well-being of a person.
Acupuncture treatment triggers impulses to the spinal cord, which then activates the spinal cord, midbrain and pituitary to release neurochemicals like endorphins, which helps in relieving pain. It suppresses the body’s inflammatory response due to its anti-inflammatory effect by minimising the production of cortisol and, thus, improves blood flow and relaxes muscle tone.
The treatment process helps in stimulating endorphins and oxytocin, which helps in stress relief and by stimulating melatonin it induces good sleep. This also improves the sense of well-being from the release of serotonin.
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
RA is a chronic inflammatory disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissue including joints and in severe cases it attacks internal organs.
Acupuncture helps in reducing the pain, joint stiffness and in improving the physical functioning by regulating the level of interleukins and certain cell signaling proteins collectively called cytokines that are involved in the inflammatory response and become elevated in autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
Regular sessions of the treatment helps in decreasing the biological markers of rheumatoid arthritis like RA factor, ESR and CRP, resulting in long-term benefits.
SPINAL CORD INJURY
SCI is one of the most common causes of death and life-changing disability and serious complications in patients. Acupuncture has been widely used to help the recovery of motor and sensory function after SCI. It not only results in functional improvement but also aids neural restoration. It effectively manages a range of post-SCI complications, including motor and sensory dysfunction, pain, neurogenic bowel and bladder, pressure ulcers, spasticity and osteoporosis. It also takes care of anxiety, depression and insomnia, which are fairly common complications amongst individuals with SCI.
Electro acupuncture is where small electrical current is passed through the needles; this can help excite neurons located below the point of injury to improve one’s functional outcome. Spinal cord injuries can severely impact the motor function, which may lead to paralysis but can be prevented by the process of stimulating repair with acupuncture. Electro acupuncture generates sensory impulses in the deep tissues, activating neurons at the level of spinal cord resulting in muscle contraction.
Other related ailments like neurogenic bladder with symptoms like urinary incontinence and urine retention can be reversed, by affecting the synthesis and release of neurotransmitters which regulate the physiological function of the bladder and thus the treatment has a therapeutic role for SCI patients.
HERNIATED DISC
A herniated disc, often referred to as a “slipped disc” or a “bulging disc” or a “prolapsed disc”, is a condition which creates pressure on the nerves and muscles of the spine, which then creates inflammation and swelling in a localised area of the spine and can cause severe pain in the neck, lower back pain, sciatica pain and tingling that radiates down the leg.
Acupuncture is very effective for the treatment of intervertebral disc herniations. It triggers the release of endorphins into the blood stream, which are our body’s natural pain relievers.
Similarly, the gate control theory also plays a role in acupuncture’s effectiveness at reducing pain. This theory asserts that pain signals travel slowly from the point of injury to the spinal cord and into the brain because the nerves can only handle a limited number of signals at a given point of time.
The treatment helps generate faster signals to crowd out the slow-moving signals, thus blocking out the pain. It not only relieves the symptoms of a slipped disc but also speeds up the healing process. The treatment process for herniated disc will often focus on strengthening the qi and blood flow to the kidneys.
CALCANEAL SPUR
Also known as heel spur, this is a calcium deposit on the heel bone. According to acupuncture, heel spur occurs due to qi and blood stagnation in the kidney, gall bladder and stomach channels, which controls the pain of the feet. Acupuncture can help to relax the muscles and connective tissue of the foot and decrease inflammation.
FROZEN SHOULDER
Frozen shoulder, also termed as adhesive capsulitis, causes severe stiffness, muscle aches and limited movement of the shoulder, which can even result into no movement at all. The treatment stimulates nerves in the muscles and tissues surrounding the shoulder, which helps in reducing shoulder inflammation, which directly reduces the symptoms and provides both immediate relief whilst maximising mobility of the shoulder.
FIBROMYALGIA
Fibromyalgia is a condition which affects bones and muscles and the symptoms are muscle pain, burning , twitching or tightness, fatigue, insomnia, bloating, headache, sensitivity to cold, heat, light, numbness or tingling in the hands, legs or feet.
The treatment stimulates several mechanisms in the body like the peripheral and central nervous system, the inflammatory response of the immune system and the natural pain-relieving mechanism in the nervous system.
Other ailments which are often treated successfully are gout, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, locked finger, planter fascitis, ankylosing and other forms of spondylitis as well as sports-related ailments.

Vets Go Upscale to Care for Pets (and Their Owners) When Allegra Brochin and her boyfriend adopted Sprinkles, a feisty white Maltese, last year, they set about finding pet care. “I immediately started looking,” said Ms. Brochin, 23, who works as a communications coordinator for Michael Kors in New York. She saw ads for Bond Vet pop up on her Instagram feed, and when she took in Sprinkles for her shots, she was won over by the look and feel of the clinic, “especially when it’s for a pet you care about and feel responsible for,” she said. Ms. Brochin is not alone in her devotion to her pandemic pet. More than 12.6 million households adopted animals from March to December of last year, according to the American Pet Products Association, helping to propel an increase in visits and revenue to veterinary offices, as new owners took pets in for their first checkup. The heightened demand for veterinary services has drawn investors and others to the market. Landlords — who might previously have spurned tenants associated with unpleasant odors and noise — are more amenable to leasing to the clinics after a year when the vets paid their rent while other businesses fell behind. And architecture firms that specialize in the design of vet space are busier than ever. Tech-savvy start-ups like Bond Vet are promising a reinvention of the experience, with phone apps, round-the-clock telemedicine and boutique storefronts where refreshments (for pet owners) run to LaCroix and cold brew. The pet care business is riding a growth spurt: Morgan Stanley projected that it would be a $275 billion industry in 2030, up from $100 billion in 2019, with vet care the fastest-growing segment over the next decade. “Ten years ago, there was a baby boom,” Arash Danialifar, chief executive of GD Realty Group, a California company that has leased space to a veterinary start-up, said about the proliferation of shops selling children’s fashion. “Now it’s all about pets.” Start-ups make up fewer than 1 percent of the more than 28,000 vet practices across the country, but they are growing quickly. In New York, Small Door Veterinary recently announced it had raised $20 million and planned to go from a single location to 25 by 2025. The firm operates on a membership model, with 24/7 telemedicine and waiting areas with arched, white oak-paneled alcoves that give owners and their pets an intimate place to chill before appointments. Designed by Alda Ly Architecture, the clinics are rented storefronts of 2,000 to 3,000 square feet and cost about $1 million to kit out, said Josh Guttman, Small Door’s co-founder and chief executive. Bond Vet, another New York start-up, models itself on CityMD clinics; it recently raised $17 million and now has six offices, including its first suburban location, in Garden City on Long Island. And in Los Angeles, another membership-based company, Modern Animal, has an office in a high-end shopping district in West Hollywood, with three more to come in the city by year’s end and a dozen clinics in California by 2022, said the company’s founder and chief executive, Steven Eidelman. “I don’t think as a landlord I would have been encouraged to have a vet clinic 15 years ago, but today I would,” said Mr. Danialifar of GD Realty, Modern Animal’s West Hollywood landlord. The start-ups appear positioned to appeal to millennials, who made up the majority of new pet owners during the pandemic. Seventy-six percent of millennials own pets, according to a recent survey, and they are spending generously on their charges. Rebecca Hilton, 34, who lives in Santa Monica, Calif., joined Modern Animal after adopting two kittens, Pinot and Lula, last year and has made use of the company’s app to communicate with the office. She has talked to the doctor via video-chat and has used the app to ask questions and send photos. Meridian Veterinary Real Estate, a developer founded in Dallas in 2016, builds animal hospitals of 10,000 to 25,000 square feet with departments for surgery, oncology, internal medicine and other specialties — often equipped with as much as $10 million in equipment for things like X-rays, CT scans and M.R.I.s. Such developers work with architecture firms versed in vet design, including Rauhaus Freedenfeld & Associates, which is fielding twice as many calls for new business as it did before the pandemic, said Warren Freedenfeld, a principal at the firm. His business and others design interiors with materials that absorb noise — both high frequency (howling) and low frequency (barking) — and without free-standing columns or sharp corners that might invite a dog to lift a leg. Clinics are designed to be “fear free” with soothing colors and, often, separate zones for cats and dogs. Although there may be a flurry of activity now, veterinary real estate has been evolving for decades. Traditionally, vets owned their own practice as well as the building that housed it — often an actual house. That started to change in the 1980s and ’90s with the advent of corporations, known as consolidators, that began to buy up veterinary practices, attracted by the stability of the businesses. The corporations, often backed by private equity or other investment funds, typically take charge of back-office functions such as payroll and the ordering of supplies, leaving the clinical side of the practices to the vets. Around 25 percent of veterinary practices “have been sold to corporate,” said Karen E. Felsted, a veterinary consultant. Some consolidators own hundreds of pet hospitals — “the McDonald’s of the vet space,” said Brian Wine, founder and chief executive of the Wine Group, a brokerage firm that specializes in veterinary real estate. But most consolidators have not been interested in the actual buildings. The vets thus became landlords, receiving rental income from the corporate groups and retaining the ability to sell their buildings to associates on retirement. Now, however, the animal doctors have other options for their properties. Some private equity firms and real estate investment trusts have divisions devoted to veterinary real estate. And increasingly, companies dedicated to it are springing up. Terravet Real Estate Solutions, founded in 2016, now owns more than 100 buildings in 30 states, many of them housing practices owned by consolidators. For instance, Terravet owns the building housing CountryChase Veterinary Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and the American Veterinary Group, which operates practices across the South, owns the business. Hound Properties, founded two years ago, has been buying buildings with an investor-backed fund. And Vetley Capital, started this year, has a portfolio of 20 buildings in nine states, most of them on the small side, ranging from 2,500 to 4,000 square feet and costing around $1 million, said Zach Goldman, the company’s founder and president. The price of real estate has risen, but the returns are generally modest. “It’s the ultimate slow and steady income,” said Tripp Stewart, co-founder and chief executive of Hound Properties, who is also a practicing vet. Despite the interest, there are obstacles to opening pet hospitals. Zoning sometimes limits their locations. In Pasadena, Calif., GD Realty had to request a zoning change for Modern Animal. Because such businesses revolve around animal doctors, who are in demand as veterinary companies expand, there are shortages of vets in some parts of the country, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. Kia’s fast-charging EV6 electric crossover is coming to the U.S. in early 2022
The Kia EV6, an all-electric crossover that kicks off the automaker’s Plan S strategy to shift away from internal combustion engines and toward EVs, will come to the U.S. early next year, the company said Tuesday evening during a live streamed event in New York.
The EV6 is the first dedicated battery-electric vehicle to built on its new Electric-Global Modular Platform, a platform that is shared with Hyundai and Genesis as part of the Hyundai Motor Group. The EGM-platform is the underlying foundation of the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 compact crossover. And it’s one of 11 electric vehicles that Kia plans to deliver globally by 2026.
Kia said its new dedicated battery electric vehicles will all start with the “EV” prefix. A number will follow “EV” to indicate the vehicle’s position in the lineup. That puts the EV6 somewhere in the middle of its upcoming lineup.
While the global debut held earlier this year provided many of the details, a few new nuggets of information were shared, including that customers can make reservations for 1,500 first edition versions of the EV6 beginning June 3. The automaker has not revealed pricing for any of the vehicle trims.
The EV6 First Edition will be similar to the base model with lots of techie add-ons, including an augmented reality head-up display, remote smart parking assist feature, 14-speaker Meridian audio system and a two-year subscription to SiriusXM. There will be notable mechanical and exterior differences as well, including a wide sunroof, 20-inch wheels, dual-motor AWD and a 77.4 kWh battery.

Nuts and bolts
Kia designed the EV6 to look and perform like a roomy sports car. The four-door crossover has a low front end that moves up into a roofline, giving it coupe-like profile. The LED headlights have a segmented pattern and the traditional grille found on internal combustion engine vehicles is gone.
The EV6 has the same 114.2-inch wheelbase as the Kia Telluride, which gives some sense of its size.
The Kia EV6 will come with two Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese battery pack options — a 58 kWh or 77.4 kWh — with the larger one providing a targeted range of 300 miles. The vehicle is offered in both rear-wheel and AWD, which depending on the electric motor and battery configuration delivers between 167 and 313 horsepower. The EV6 GT, an AWD model that comes with the larger battery and powerful front and rear electric motors, delivers 567 horsepower. The GT model, which won’t be available until late 2022, can travel from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds.
Perhaps more importantly, is that the vehicle supports 400-volt and 800-volt DC charging. Kia claims that 800v DC fast charging from a 350-kW charger can add up to 210 miles to the battery in under 18 minutes.
Kia loaded up on various charging features. The EV6 has an onboard 11 kW charger for Level 2 charging that will power up the battery in about seven hours. There’s also what Kia calls vehicle-to-load functionality, which is jargony way of saying the EV6 can be a power source for appliances, tools and devices like a computer. It works by taking electricity from the battery to a charging control unit, which provides 1900 watts of power.
The user is able to plug into that power via a 100v outlet located in a socket on front of second row seat base.
