Ok but imagine at the beginning of Sandman Season 2 they do the S1 recap only instead of some serious voiceover it’s Hob Gadling doing the Luis from Ant-Man style of recap.
Except it’s not even like Hob’s being cheerful about it, he’s just repeating back to Dream what Dream told him about what else happened in Season 1, but at increasing levels of hysteria

While at Dover, ahead of setting sail to France, [Henry VII] granted: 'Power to Arthur prince of Wales, duke of Cornwall and earl of Chester, as keeper of England the king's lieutenant there, to grant licensees to elect to conventual, but not cathedral, chapter; to assent to elections, make restitution of temporalities and receive fealties on elections of minor prelates, but not with respect to greater prelates, without the king's command: and to present to benefices not exceeding the taxation of 40 marks, churches of the taxation of 20 marks and under to which the chancellor is accostumed to present, being excepted'.
— Gareth Streeter, Arthur Prince of Wales: Henry VIII's Lost Brother
Some things 6-year-old Arthur Tudor did whilst his father was away in France between 9 October and 13 December 1492:
Signed at least eleven documents of official royal business
Authorised a series of pardons to men across the kingdom who had failed to appear before the magistrates' bench
Sorted the financial settlement of the dowager Viscountess of Lisle
Ordered sheriffs to arrest offenders in Essex
Placed a bond of recognisance on a group of rioters in Bristol
Ordered the arrest of a man who had wronged a Spanish merchant

If shallow readings of medieval text has a million haters I am one of them. If shallow readings of medieval text has ten haters I am one of them. If shallow readings of medieval text has one hater then that is me. If shallow readings of medieval text have no haters then I am dead. If the world condones shallow readings of medieval text then I am against the world.

dating sim writing (potentially more interactive writing? but who's to say; this is just what i'm working on right now) is so fascinatingly mechanical.
like. there are questions that i've thought about in regards to more narrative writing and pacing---how long does it take to establish a relationship (of any kind)? what keeps it from feeling rushed?---that become entirely different questions when one of the characters that you're dealing with is at least partially determined by the reader. and here developing and exploring the relationship is the point; there's less available to reveal through external plot, and more space for conversation, but at the same time, there's a balancing act where you're trying to create the feeling that things are developing organically (not necessarily on rails!) whilst within the mechanical constraints of coding something up (there are some rails!).
But like: how many choices should a reader have in a conversation to make it feel like they have input? How many of those should mechanically matter? What's the line between feeling like you have narrative freedom and feeling like you're being asked to make a lot of choices that don't particularly matter? How do you create something that is on rails (a conversation tree about a particular topic should touch on X number of things) without it feeling on rails?
And then there's questions of overarching structure, and how things tie together; whether every conversation should advance character or relationship progression and if they don't, how one determines when things progress; whether routes are self-contained, and if they're not, how one makes interactions across routes feel natural and interesting, and so on, and so forth, and it's so interesting to think about.
