Fellow Travelers Timeline
(as comprehensive as i can make it. corrections/additions welcome)
1919-20 (?) - Hawk is born
based on tennis trophy which shows year 1936, and hawk's statement that he and kenny were on the tennis team in 11th grade (16/17 years old).
Tumblr media
also date on the paperweight (1937) that hawk says kenny picked out on their senior trip. spring or fall though? if spring (usual for a senior trip, just before graduation), it would mean hawk graduated HS in 1937, b. 1919. (thanks, @lestatscunt!)
Tumblr media
June 6, 1930 - Tim is born, on Staten Island, NY
birthdate/place shown on army application in ep 5
Gemini, with moon in Libra
>>> With a Gemini Sun Libra Moon, emotional equilibrium is hard for you to maintain in a world of constant flux and tension. Since you are not responsible for the woes and upsets of those around you, you should not feel so duty-bound to assuage their wounds or mediate every conflict that happens to come your way.
>>> your natural diplomacy, extraordinary perception and insight can all be applied creatively in such fields as politics, social work, and the mass media.
>>> your extreme open-mindedness would probably enable you to almost any life-style. You have a universal quality about you that transcends culture, religion, ideology, or any other barrier that divides mankind.
Fall 1937 - Spring 1941 - Hawk attends "Penn", presumably the University of Pennsylvania. (assuming hawk b. 1919)
(this is very very long, the rest is under the cut)
December 7, 1941 - bombing of Pearl Harbor, US enters WWII
??? - Hawk joins the army (along with Kenny), and is sent to Europe.
January 9 – August 15, 1945 - Battle of Luzon, where Kenny dies.
September 2, 1945 - Japan surrenders, US exits WWII
February, 1949 - Hawk starts working at the State Department
Hawk says in 1x04 (Dec 1953) that he's been working at the State Dept for "four years and ten months".
"I came out of the war with four assets: degree from Penn, a hero's war record, no particular political ideology, and a passing acquaintance with three languages. Throw in a talent for prevaricating and a taste for travel and fine clothes, you have the makings of a competent, mid-level Foreign Service bureaucrat."
Fall 1948 - Spring 1952 - Tim attends Fordham University, graduating with a degree in political science and history.
1951 - Hawk starts work for the Bureau of Congressional Relations
Tim mentions Hawk's been working there for two years during their meeting on the bench.
1952 - Tim works "the New York campaign" (presumably for Eisenhower).
1952/3? - Tim interns for three months at the Star, in the mailroom.
November 4, 1952 - Election Night, Eisenhower (R) wins the presidency. Tim/Hawk first meet and are instantly smitten. (ep 1)
February 16, 1953 to March 10, 1954 - McCarthy Hearings, part 1.
The first consisted of a series of hearings conducted by McCarthy, as the subcommittee’s chairman, throughout 1953 and early 1954 in which McCarthy alleged Communist influence within the press and the federal government, including the State Department, the U.S. Army, and the Government Printing Office.
March 5, 1953 - Stalin dies.
Late March, 1953 - Hawk/Tim second meeting
After Hawk meets Tim at the park bench, he attends a hearing where Marcus says Cohn has brought David Schine on, and then later at their lunch Senator Smith says, "McCarthy is sending Cohn and his sidekick to Europe..." This article, dated April 19, says that Cohn and Schine have been in Europe for two weeks.
Hawk mentions that it's near the end of the month, police need to make their quotas.
Tumblr media
April 27, 1953 - Executive Order 10450 signed. Hawk goes to Tim's apartment and tells him about Kenny. (ep 1)
June 6, 1953 - Tim's 23rd birthday (Hawk 'misses' it because they weren't talking for 4 weeks. belated celebration in ep 3.)
June 15, 1953 (?) - date of the newspaper Tim is reading just before he goes to visit Hawk in ep 2, where Hawk makes him write the letter to Mary. I'm choosing to believe this is a mistake on the show's part, because this would mean that Hawk has already missed Tim's birthday.
Tumblr media
June 19, 1953 - Julius and Ethel Rosenberg's execution. Hawk comforts Lucy about this at the end of ep 2. So, likely Hawk and Tim had their big fight very shortly before Tim's birthday, and weren't talking from end of May - end of June.
End of June, 1953 - at the end of ep 2, Tim says it's been 4 months since his last confession, making his last (proper) confession the end of Feb or beginning of March. (ie, before he meets Hawk again).
End of June or beginning of July, 1953 - weekend trip to Rehoboth Beach (ep 3)
November 1953 - G. David Schine drafted into the army (ep 3)
Christmas 1953 (ep 4)
March 16 to June 17, 1954 - Army-McCarthy Hearings (part 2) (ep 5)
The second phase involved the subcommittee's investigation of McCarthy’s attacks on the U.S. Army. Known as the “Army-McCarthy hearings,” they were broadcast on national television and they contributed to McCarthy’s declining national popularity. Five months later, on December 2, 1954, the Senate censured McCarthy.
June 6, 1954 - Tim's 24th birthday
June, 1954? - Tim/Hawk break up, Hawk proposes to Lucy (ep 5)
I believe this happens at the tail-end of the Army-McCarthy hearings, so before June 17th.
Fall, 1954 - Sen. Smith's funeral
based solely on fall foliage in this screenshot:
Tumblr media
Late Nov / Early Dec, 1954 - Tim enlists in the army
based on army application: birthdate 6/6/30, age: 24 years, 6 months
Tumblr media
Late Nov / Early Dec, 1954 - Hawk/Tim last meeting in the tower
based on the radio program Tim is listening to, which says, "Chief Counsel Roy Cohn has resigned from the committee. And Senator McCarthy, his approval ratings plummeting, faces censure or even expulsion from the Senate."
Tim leaves for Fort Dix, for training, but is later stationed at Fort Polk, in Vernon Parish, LA. (thanks, @jesterlesbian!)
Tumblr media
December 2, 1954 - the Senate censures McCarthy.
Summer or Fall 1956? - Tim's letter (that lucy burns) (ep 6)
Flashbacks, for context:
"Since he's giving up his apartment, Hawk insists on having a lair in the woods." // "I'm surprised that he finally agreed."
Lucy lets contractor go. // "Give me a baby."
Hawk is reading the Bristol Daily Courier, a paper located in Bristol, PA, a town in Bucks County, outside Philadelphia. I can't find any info on the one headline I can read though ("Heath Carlson breaks arws deadlock, locals proud"), so can't date this properly.
Tumblr media
Lucy cleaning out Hawk's apartment, finds paperweight, sees Tim drop off letter.
"I went into the Army to get away from you. I thought time and distance would help. But it hasn't." If Tim sends the letter in summer 1956, it's been a year and a half since he enlisted.
Biggest question here: did lucy ask for a baby before or after she read Tim's letter??? the flashbacks don't answer this definitively.
October, 1956? - Lucy becomes pregnant with Jackson (see note under April 1957)
October 23 – November 4, 1956 - Hungarian Revolution of 1956
October 23, 1956 - April 30, 1957 - Hungarian Refugee Crisis
November 8, 1956 - Operation Safe Haven commences
President Eisenhower declared that 5,000 Hungarians would be awarded visa numbers remaining under the 1953 Refugee Relief Act
Spring 1957? - Tim sends telegram. It looks like 05-??-???? to me, which doesn't really make sense if McCarthy died on May 2nd, but it's hard to make out. or maybe telegrams used the date format dd-mm-yyyy.
Tumblr media
April 1957? - Tim/Hawk first meeting, Lucy at least 5 (or 6? or 7?) months pregnant
You should feel your baby's first movements, called "quickening," between weeks 16 and 25 of your pregnancy. If this is your first pregnancy, you may not feel your baby move until closer to 25 weeks.
25 weeks ~= 6 months, and it still seems novel to her, so let's say she's approx. 6 months pregnant here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
May 2, 1957 - Joe McCarthy dies.
May 6, 1957 - McCarthy's funeral. Tim's first visit to Hawk's apartment (ep 8)
June 6, 1957 - Tim turns 27.
June or July, 1957 - Jackson born (based on dates above)
Tumblr media
1958? - Kimberly is born. (estimated bc she looks the same age or older than Jackson, so assuming she's a year younger at most.)
August, 1965 - President Johnson signs a law making it a federal crime to destroy or mutilate [draft] cards.
October 15, 1965 -David Miller publicly burns his draft card, becoming the first person to be prosecuted under that law and a symbol of the growing movement against the war.
May 17, 1968 - the Catonsville Nine took 378 draft files from the draft board office in Catonsville, Maryland and burned them in the parking lot. (inspo for Tim & co. thanks @brokendrums!)
November 1968 - ep 6. Hawk is 48, Tim is 38, Jackson is 11.
based on this newspaper screenshot when Hawk is talking to Marcus on the phone about Tim
Tumblr media
November 1968 - May 1970 (earliest) - Tim in prison. (he says in ep 7 he was in prison for a year and a half. this assumes he went to prison right away, but it could have been several months later if he was awaiting trial/sentencing.)
1970? - After prison, Tim moves to San Francisco and gets his counseling degree.
Mid-late 1970s - Tim earns his C-SWCM qualifications, requiring:
A Bachelor’s degree in social work from a graduate program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education
Documentation of at least three (3) years and 4,500 hours of paid, supervised, post-BSW professional experience in an organization or agency that provides case management services
Current state BSW-level license or an ASWB BSW-level exam passing score.
nb. because Tim already had his bachelors (from Fordham, majoring in history), I could see him entering a much-accelerated BSW program, transfering a lot of credits from his previous degree. That would give him maybe 2 more years of university, plus the required 3 years of post-BSW work = 5 years minimum before he earns that business card.
February 4, 1977 - Fleetwood Mac's album Rumours is released, including the 1970s Tim/Hawk anthem, Go Your Own Way
October, 1978 - Jackson dies
Tumblr media
November 27, 1978 - Harvey Milk assassinated
May 22, 1979 - Harvey's 49th birthday (celebrated in ep 7)
1986 - ep 8
how long was Hawk in San Francisco? Timelines for the events below may be fudged in the show, bc I doubt he was there for 5 months.
March, 1986 - Roy Cohn's 60 Minutes interview, which the gang watches in ep 4.
April 15, 1986 - US bombs Libya. in the first episode you can hear reference to this on the radio, before Hawk leaves for San Francisco. (thanks @aliceinhorrorland93!)
July 27, 1986 - In California, Gov. George Deukmejian vetoes a bill that would have defined AIDS as a physical handicap calling for entitlement to protection under the state's civil rights laws.
August 2, 1986 - Roy Cohn dies (ep 8)
Late 1986? - the fundraising gala that Tim crashes, shortly after Cohn's death.
September 1986 - The State Legislature has passed another bill [in addition to the one vetoed on July 27]. Mr. Deukmejian, a Republican running for re-election, has indicated that he will probably veto the bill. (nb, this is likely the bill that Tim & co want to pressure the governor to sign).
October 11, 1987 - AIDS memorial quilt first displayed (ep 8)
--
this was a collaborative effort! many thanks to @ishipallthings for many of these details, as well as @startagainbuttercup , @alorchik, @itsalinh and others in the FT discord!

it's time now. it's time to imagine the brightest future you can, and talk about it.
a future where people only work 8 hours a week and everyone's basic needs are met. a future where we are more connected to nature and eat seasonal, local produce. a future where you look out for your neighbours and they look out for you. a future where you actually know who your neighbours are. a future where everyone is just a lot more relaxed and able to do whatever they want to do - this 8 hour working week has given people their lives back and now they're able to make community events, work in community gardens, sing and dance and spend time with their kids, play whatever sport they want, travel, read, create art and music.
People are interacting with each other in good faith again because money as an ulterior motive has all but disappeared. Cus you see a few decades ago they made profits illegal. All money has to be put back into the company and CEOs can take home a salary only, no bonuses and it can't be more than 3x what the lowest paid employee makes. You can go to jail if your company is found to make profits, advertise on a large scale or pay its high ranking members more than what's allowed.
Jail still exists but mostly people go in for financial crimes (greed still exists); drugs are decriminalised and available to use safely. people are not as desperate now so there's been a massive reduction of violent and petty crime and most of the people who still do this are teenagers who get away with a slap on the wrist. police are not armed anymore and are heavily penalised if they abuse their power or hurt a civilian, and their role is more that of mediator, signposter (to community services, social services, and free and accessible healthcare including for mental health) and security. together with the former military they make up an "emergency task force" which are called upon in times of need and crisis, for floods, fires, other such disasters.
the stock market completely collapsed after profits were made illegal and people had to find other ways to figure out what a company was worth: such as how they treat their staff or how accessible their processes are. as a result of this, as well as more widespread disability thanks to Covid and an ageing population, accessibility is fucking incredible now. most places are accessible to the vast majority of disabled people even without them having to ask for a single thing. If they have to ask, accommodations are made quickly and without fuss and this is completely normal now. disabled people are more visible than ever in public life and this has led to a generally kinder, more tolerant public life.
Everything is slower now. Social media as we know it died decades ago and Internet 4.0 is efficient, will find you accurate answers and the websites you're looking for very easily and fast. there's monopoly laws restricting how large companies operate online. online ads are all but illegal - there's "phone book" esque pages where you can promote your business or service and that's allowed but not anywhere else. Lots of people are still annoying and some of them are still cruel but overall living together as humans has gotten so much more chill. We've tackled climate change and reversed much of it, now it's a global day of mourning whenever a species is found to be extinct through human intervention. these days used to happen much more frequently but it's very rare these days. Most everyone gets the day off and is encouraged to read about the lost species or hold themed funerals. Globally everything has gotten better - there's much more global equality now after a bunch of western/formerly colonising countries almost self destructed and then instead decided to own up for colonialism, pay reparations to a lot of countries in Africa Asia and Latin America, as well as indigenous nations of North America, Oceania, even in Europe. The USA doesn't exist anymore instead its a whole host of separate nations all managed by the native people whose land it is. The UK doesn't exist anymore. England is still sad about it but Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Cornwall are called Cymru, Alba, Eire and Kernow again and they've formed a Celtic Union for better collective bargaining power in the EU (which still exists, somehow. Its better now. England may still be out of the EU I'm not sure). Migration is common and foreigners are welcomed into any country with open arms.
I may try to write something about this. I have a vision for a future and it's so lovely. Here, on earth, with the starting point being now. We have a lot to work with and only a few changes could make such a difference. Demilitarisation, UBI and maximum working hours, greedy financial practices made illegal. Conservation and education on local plants and nature and food. Community building on every level. Giving people their lives back.
This is all extremely possible. If it were up to me, very little in society would be left unchanged but it would all be people friendly changes. changes that aim to support the poorest and most marginalised, changes that aim to punish greed and exploitation. It's a work in progress of course. But I have a vision for a better world and dammit if I'm not going to share it with you.

Victor Hugo on Talleyrand's death
For @empirearchives who was interested, here's a translation of Victor Hugo's text about Talleyrand's death. My thanks to @microcosme11 for her help <33
Choses Vues, Victor Hugo
1838
Talleyrand
19th of May
In the Rue St-Florentin, there is a palace and a sewer.
The palace, with its noble, rich, and dull architecture, was long called "Hôtel de l'Infuntado"; today, we read on its front door: Hôtel Talleyrand. During the fourty years he lived on this street, the last host of this palace might never have set eyes on this sewer.
He was a stranged, feared, and considerable character: his name was Charles-Maurice de Périgord; he was noble as Machiavel, a priest like Gondi, defrocked like Fouché, witty as Voltaire, and lame as the devil. One could say that everything limped with him: the nobility which he had put to the service of the republic, the priesthood he had dragged on the Champ-de-Mars then threw down the drain, the marriage he had broken by twenty scandals and by a voluntary separation, the wit he dishonoured through vileness. This man, nevertheless, had grandeur.
The splendours of both regimes were mixed together inside of him: he was prince of the old kingdom of France, and prince of the French Empire.
For thirty years, from the depth of his palace, from the depth of his mind, he had just about led Europe. He had let the revolution call him "tu", and had smiled at it, ironically of course; but it had not noticed. He had approached, known, observed, pierced, stirred, upturned, delved into, mocked, intellectually fertilized all the men of his era, all the ideas of his century, and there had been a few minutes in his life when, holding in his hand the four or five fearsome threads that moved the civilized universe, he had had for a puppet Napoleon the First, Emperor of the French, King of Italy, Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine, Mediator of the Swiss Confederation. Such was the game this man played.
After the Revolution of July, that old race, whose grand chambellan he was, having fallen, he found himself standing on one foot and told the people of 1830, sitting, bare-armed, on a pile of cobbles: Make me your ambassador.
He had received Mirabeau's last confession and Thiers' first confidence. He had said himself he was a great poet and had made a trilogy in three dynasties: Act I, Buonaparte's Empire; Act 2, The House of Bourbon; Act 3, The House of Orleans.
He had done all of this in his palace, and, in this palace, like a spider in its web, he had attracted into it and taken successively heroes, thinkers, great men, conquerors, kings, princes, emperors, Bonaparte, Sieyès, Mme de Staël, Chateaubriand, Benjamin Constant, Alexander of Russia, Wilhelm of Prussia, Francis of Austria, Louis XVIII, Louis-Philippe, all the golden, shiny flies who buzzed in the history of those last fourty years. The whole sparkling swarm, fascinated by this man's deep eye, had successively passed under the dark door that bore, written on its architrave: Hôtel Talleyrand.
Well, the day before yesterday, 17 March, 1838, that man died. Doctors came and embalmed the corpse. For this, like the Egyptians, they first withdrew the bowels from the belly and the brain from the skull. Once done, after they had transformed the prince de Talleyrand into a mummy, and nailed this mummy in a white satin-lined coffin, they withdrew, leaving upon a table the brain, that brain which thought so many things, inspired so many men, built so many edifices, led two revolutions, fooled twenty kings, contained the world.
Once the doctors were gone, a valet entered, he saw what they had left. Hold on! they forgot this. What to do ? He remembered that there was a sewer in the street, he went there, and threw that brain into this sewer.
Finis rerum.

basic groups in morphogen (italicized means unnamed can you tell yet i hate naming)
- the royal academy of scientific inquiry: most prestigious scientific research center and academy in europe. funded by the royal government directly. sponsor of my main character saverio. primarily a project of the royal military but many of its members feel they are on the “pure” quest of scientific discovery. have a number of extremely well hidden ties to mob groups that are cleverly spread thin so that only one or two scientists can potentially be implicated rather than the entire institution. some of these ties are connected to the christian science academy
- royal military science institution: develops weapons and technology for the royal military. does maintain ties to the underworld but very very tightly, with deals going through many mediators and offering cash only, rather than exchange of information as is common in other orgs. not even the alliance knows what is happening there.
- christian science academy: second most prominent institution in estreau. funded primarily by the church and strongly disapproving of the royal academy’s “unchristian” science (more so historically than now). significantly overshadowed by the royal academy in resources and prestige and was therefore forced to turn to mob support. about twenty years ago, a deal was struck with a number of prominent gang families (currently in an unnamed alliance) where they would fund resource in exchange for access to scientific laboratories, equipment, and research.
- unnamed alliance of gangs: group of six of the biggest crime families in london. control the underworld side of the christian science academy. associates are able to use the academy’s resources but their activities are closely monitored and can be seized at any time. other gangs are excluded entirely. although big and powerful, the alliance is a seemingly dormant force compared to more volatile gangs, as they are in a comfortable enough position to prefer maintaining the status quo than disrupting it. they are almost entirely unbothered by police activity, especially since many cops are associates or even members
- royal family of estreau: ruling monarchs of estreau with absolute power. basically the british monarchy in their heyday. the youngest daughter has recently gone missing. the current king is a large patron of science
- various hospitals: the smaller hospitals throughout estreau are generally aligned with either the royal or christian science academies. all major hospitals are nominally aligned with the royal academy (most are named after monarchs or just royal hospital) but maintain secret ties with the christian academy as well. smaller mob groups also find these institutions. most are regarded as “neutral” ground
- clinics of the night: entirely mob sponsored secret medical centers that form a sort of decentralized web throughout estreau. they are a group themselves, allied with both the alliance and almost every other mob group. offer their services for anyone (underdeveloped sorry)
- odetta’s theater: saverio’s only direct tie to the underworld, but odetta herself is able to further that extension indirectly. a revival of the circus odetta and saverio grew up in. circuses in general are viewed as gangs in this world and so most fall into criminal activity regardless. odetta’s is unique due to being primarily made up of children, as she genuinely wanted it to be a good outlet for them. primarily make money by spying as well as some burglary and pickpocketing (kinda vague here there’s a lot to them)

A four-year-old girl who was separated from her parents as they tried to board a migrant boat from Tunisia to Italy was forced to make the journey across the Mediterranean without them.
The girl, referred to as Linda by Italian authorities, disembarked on the island of Lampedusa on 17 October after 26 hours at sea on a crowded wooden boat carrying a further 70 asylum seekers from Tunisia.
Authorities in Tunisia are attempting to repatriate her. Her parents have been given a travel ban and are accused of abandoning a minor.
“Linda is doing well, and she is in a community centre for children in Palermo, after having been transferred from Lampedusa to a community in the province of Agrigento,” said Majdi Karbai, who is one of three Tunisian MPs who represent Tunisians living in Italy. “She’s constantly asking about her parents and when she will be able to see them again.”
He added: “Her parents are in Tunisia and Tunisian authorities [on 26 October] imposed a travel ban on them. They would prefer to repatriate Linda, but the procedures are not so easy as the girl is under the legal protection of a local guardian.”
Karbai said Linda did not understand what was happening and had suffered an emotional shock.
The international NGO Save the Children has provided support to Linda. “She’s playing with other children and a psycho-social support team is helping her release her fears and pressure,” said Giovanna De Benedetto, a spokesperson for Save the Children. “We are taking care of her wellbeing.”
Linda and her family are originally from Sayada, a coastal city near Monastir, in the Sahel area, 20km (12 miles) south of Sousse and 162km south of Tunis.
Due to the current political crisis and food shortages in Tunisia, her father, a street food vendor selling chapati and mlawi sandwiches in Sayada, has not been able to make a living and decided to leave Tunisia with his family. Linda’s sister, who is seven, has a heart condition and needs constant health assistance. Her parents hoped in Europe the child could receive necessary care and before leaving had prepared a dossier containing her clinical records.
Migrant boats must be reached by sea and passengers must walk or swim in order to reach the vessels. On 16 October, as Linda’s father held her in his arms, he suddenly heard his wife scream. The woman, who was accompanying their other daughter, had entered the water carrying some luggage and was afraid of drowning before reaching the vessel.
“At some point Linda’s father had to step back to support the rest of the family and so temporarily sat Linda on the boat,” says Karbai, who worked as a cultural mediator on Lampedusa in 2011 and learned the details from one of Linda’s family members after the boat left Tunisia. “Meanwhile, the boat driver saw the big headlights of a truck and thought it was the police, so he started the engine and set off, leaving Linda’s family behind.”
Linda’s parents have refused to talk to the media. They are accused of abandoning a minor and could be charged with human trafficking. They were released from jail after the news of the girl’s arrival on Lampedusa.
Tunisia’s ministry of family, women, children and the elderly said in a statement that discussions were under way with the Tunisian consular services in Palermo to repatriate the child, and that a Tunisian diplomatic delegation is expected to meet the judge of the juvenile court in Palermo.
On Friday, a Sicilian judge blocked the girl’s repatriation. Before making a final decision, the magistrate asked that a report be sent to Palermo on the causes of the accident and Linda’s departure without her parents.
The newly elected government in Italy led by the far-right prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, the leader of Brothers of Italy, a party with neo-fascist origins, has promised the introduction of hardline measures to block the arrival of asylum seekers from north Africa.
North Africans are often considered “economic migrants” and are repatriated by European authorities who, despite the political instability and poverty in their countries, do not consider them deserving candidates for international protection. EU immigration policies are pushing thousands of people to risk their lives to take more dangerous routes to reach Europe.
The bodies of two men and two women were recovered off Lampedusa on Monday. The four people had been missing since Sunday when a boat carrying about 30 people sank 24 nautical miles south of Sicily. The body of a newborn girl was found the day before after another boat capsized off Lampione, an uninhabited islet.
Meanwhile, two NGO rescue boats carrying hundreds of asylum seekers in the central Mediterranean are expected to face the first test of migration policy under Italy’s new far-right government after Rome threatened to prevent them from entering Italian waters.
The Norwegian-flagged Ocean Viking, operated by the NGO SOS Mediterranée, has more than 200 people onboard. The other vessel, Humanity One, flying the German flag and run by the German charity SOS Humanity, is carrying about 180 people. Most of them left Libya on small boats. The ships have asked the Italian authorities for permission to disembark their passengers in a safe port in Sicily, but so far have received no response.
The decision on whether to allow those onboard the two NGO vessels to disembark will rest with the new interior minister. The post that Matteo Salvini, who made high-profile moves to block such arrivals at Italian ports, had wanted to reassume, was given to Matteo Piantedosi, a technocrat backed by all parties. Piantedosi, who has said “governing migration is a priority”, sent a note to police departments and port authorities on Tuesday in which he wrote that the two ships were failing to “follow the rules in matters of security, border control and combating illegal immigration” and that the government could ban the vessels from entering Italian territorial waters.
Almost 20,000 people have died or gone missing since 2014 in the central Mediterranean, the most unsafe passage to Europe and one of the deadliest borders in the world.

How Did Price Parity Monitoring Enhance Customer Trust in a European Food Delivery Platform?
How Did Price Parity Monitoring Enhance Customer Trust In A European Food Delivery Platform?
The food delivery business world offers no place for ambiguity and faulty prices. Pricing parity monitoring, which sets uniform pricing policies across varied channels, is a crucial part of the process. Respected food delivery platforms in Europe maintain this standard through careful oversight and systematic pricing data scraping, thus ensuring fair pricing practices. In this article, we will observe how European Food Prices Parity Monitoring plays a crucial role in a flourishing online food delivery platform that serves as a barrier to consumer trust and creates a ground for fair competition.
These platforms utilize close observation and systematic scraping of price data from various sources to keep the price stability. It happens through an accumulation of pricing information from partnering restaurants, third-party sellers, and the platform itself. By utilizing such information, the platform can use gap analysis to detect any variation in the price and take immediate corrective measures. Such a proactive approach ensures that the customers receive the same price irrespective of their choice of channel and promotes transparency and trust in the system.
Price parity monitoring has become an indispensable tool that helps to ensure equal conditions for all participants in the food delivery industry. Scraping of price data creates a playground for restaurants and vendors to fight for the quality of their offerings in an equal way instead of fighting for price fixing. Furthermore, it builds credibility and authenticity to strengthen the platform's position as a reliable mediator in the loud market of online food delivery.
Impact of Price Parity Monitoring
In the rapidly shifting food delivery landscape, ensuring fair pricing policies is essential for consumer contentment and market credibility. This effort focuses on price parity monitoring and intelligent use of European Food Prices Parity Monitoring. Here's a comprehensive look at the impact of price parity monitoring:
Consumer Confidence: By applying sophisticated scraping and price parity tracking, a consumer guarantee is created, as all channels would offer the same quality prices, which inspires trust in the platform's integrity and openness.
Market Transparency: Leveraging a price parity monitoring technology based on Web Scraping Food Delivery Data, a platform striving to foster marketplace transparency may enhance its competitiveness by ensuring uniform pricing standards, which empower consumers to make informed decisions and facilitate trust in the platform's operations.
Equitable Competition: Price parity monitoring, a process simplified by food delivery platforms' data scraping, keeps everyone on the same page and avoids the risk of pricing gaps that could upset the balance and adversely impact the entire process.
Brand Integrity: Through price parity standards, platforms reinforce their commitment to integrity and fairness, thus improving brand reputation and making the company perceived as a trustworthy entity, which gives it an upper hand in the food delivery race.
Customer Retention: One of the added values of regular pricing practices with the help of food delivery data scraping services is customer loyalty. A satisfied consumer will see every reason to visit a platform that is strongly customer-oriented and guarantees a smooth, fair pricing process.
Benefits for Consumers and Partners
Meticulous food delivery data scraping, which enables price parity monitoring of consistent prices, results in multiple advantages not only for customers but also for food delivery partners. Consumers will first benefit from being assured that all the online channels sell at the same price to maintain trust and confidence in the platform. Open pricing allows consumers to know what they are paying for and experience no hidden fees, no matter their shopping location.
As a result, price parity tracking also makes the market transparent, allowing consumers to compare and choose products more efficiently. This disclosure helps to develop a feeling of reliability and honesty, enhances the overall shopping experience, and creates loyalty to the platform.
Price parity surveillance to the partners creates a fair environment in the competitive marketplace while assuring against price discrimination and unfair advantages. Consistency in the pricing standards offered by the platform helps create an environment of fair competition where restaurants and vendors compete to provide quality services rather than play with prices.
Moreover, the brand image becomes more muscular, and consumer loyalty increases, based on which business boosts its sales and long-term expansion. In general, price parity monitoring for European Food Delivery Platform brings in benefits for both consumers and partners who, as a result, experience a marketplace that is fair, transparent, and trustworthy.
How Did Food Delivery Platforms in Europe Benefit from Price Parity Monitoring?
By implementing price parity monitoring strategies, Europe-based food delivery platforms have gained significant advantages. Here's how they have benefitted:
Enhanced Customer Trust: Price parity tracking ensures that consumers don't have to pay different prices for the same products acquired through different channels. This transparency increases the trust level of buyers, who are, therefore, more loyal to the platform and use it for their food deliveries.
Improved Partner Relationships: When food delivery platforms use standardized pricing approaches, they reinforce their relationships with their partner restaurants and vendors. Price fairness control provides equal conditions for all and prevents price discrimination, promoting mutual trust and partner relationships.
Increased Customer Loyalty: Consistent pricing practices help attain a higher level of customer loyalty. With the confidence that they are getting fair prices, consumers are most likely to stay with the platform, which translates to higher retention rates and increased customer lifetime value.
Competitive Advantage: With price parity monitoring being one of the top priorities for those food delivery platforms, market competition grows tougher. These platforms stand out from their competitors through advertised transparent and consistent pricing and get more customers.
Legal Compliance: Evaluating fair price parity among food delivery platforms assists in complying with pricing regulations. By making sure that the price is fair and transparent, the platforms can avoid legal problems and remain reputable.
To sum up, price parity monitoring has become a pivotal element in the strategy of food delivery platforms in Europe, helping them earn customers' trust, strengthen their partnerships, and gain more popularity on the market.
Conclusion: Price parity monitoring is the essential strategy presently being used by food delivery startups in Europe because its myriad of benefits includes both customers' trust enhancement and strengthening the partner relationship as well as the customers' loyalty and competitive edge. With equal and identical pricing strategies applied through all sales channels, these platforms have created transparency, boosted customer trust, and generated competitive uniqueness in a highly competitive market. Going ahead, the impact of price parity monitoring will remain critical in determining the future of online food delivery platforms, as it enables the platforms to gain traction in the field while still providing value to the clients and their partners.

Meanwhile, in Turin
*Young people in big cities sitting on used furniture.
Machine translation:
From 1950 to today, the Aurora district, which includes Porta Palazzo - the largest open-air market in Europe - has welcomed various waves of migration, becoming a space of integration and social transformation.
With a high territorial density, which reaches more than double the Turin average, the neighborhood stands out for the youth of its population: 22.3% are under 24 years old and half of these are foreigners.
Aurora is at the center of a transformation process, which has seen the entry of new economic players and consequent social tensions. The proximity to the center and the Einaudi university campus has also led to an increase in students, but there is a perceived lack of spaces in which to gather.
The project "Borealis: an imaginary Aurora" by Kaninchen-Haus APS
With the opening of a new cultural and social space, Kaninchen-Haus responds to a need deeply felt by the neighborhood communities, associations and institutions.
Borealis will be a location where different entities and realities will be able to compare and collaborate. The space will offer hospitality to heterogeneous segments of the public who will be able to take advantage of services previously absent in the area: meeting centres, study rooms, art galleries, food redistribution hubs, markets and coworking for third sector organisations, and will have the possibility of propose new initiatives that respond to their needs, acquiring skills and influence in planning the future of the neighborhood, thanks to a participation program mediated by professionals of culture and social innovation.
Who is the project aimed at?

Meduza's The Beet: Living in limbo in Nagorno-Karabakh
Hello, and welcome back to The Beet!
I’m Eilish Hart, the editor of this special newsletter from Meduza covering Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Following last week’s dispatch from Dnipro, we’re back with another piece of on-the-ground reporting — this time from the site of the ongoing blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh. Located within Azerbaijan and home to a predominantly Armenian population, this disputed enclave has just one lifeline connecting it to the outside world — a mountain pass known as the Lachin Corridor. Demonstrators claiming to be environmental activists, but seemingly acting with Baku’s official support, set up camp along the road in mid-December 2022, and it has been closed to regular traffic ever since.
More than two months on, human rights groups warn that the roadblock is putting thousands of lives at risk, as stranded residents are left with severely limited access to essential goods and services. Russian peacekeepers, who have guarded the Lachin Corridor since Moscow brokered an end to the 2020 war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, have been unable to clear the pass. And the humanitarian aid they and the International Committee of the Red Cross do manage to deliver to the region continues to fall short of demand. Meanwhile, the Azerbaijani authorities deny any responsibility for the blockade and have roundly rejected Yerevan’s assertion that the crisis is meant to pave the way for “ethnic cleansing” (meanwhile, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev said in January that Karabakh Armenians are free to leave the region). The U.N.’s top court recently ordered Baku to unblock the route, but the ruling hasn’t yet had any practical effect. In a dispatch for The Beet, Meduza special correspondent Lilia Yapparova reports on how the ongoing blockade has upended daily life in Nagorno-Karabakh.
One night late last December, Narine Danilyan woke to the sound of sobs coming from behind the wall in her apartment in Stepanakert, Nagorno-Karabakh’s de facto capital. Narine rushed into the next room, which was dark and cold — the result of yet another electricity blackout — and found her mother, Zara, weeping softly in her bed.
Narine’s nine-year-old son, Garo, was thrashing around in the next bed. The child’s body convulsed in epileptic spasms so brutal it looked like he was trying to shoot up from the bed, she recalled. “He couldn’t control his body. And I could hear him wheezing. He was suffocating, and I didn’t know how to help him,” Narine tells The Beet.
Garo suffers from epilepsy and cystic fibrosis. He is at risk of dying without his medication, but there’s no way for his family to get the pills as Azerbaijan-backed protesters have blocked the only road in and out of Nagorno-Karabakh. Thousands of families in the disputed territory, located within Azerbaijan, are suffering due to a decades-old conflict they once hoped would be resolved through Russia’s mediation. But while Moscow remains preoccupied with its stalling invasion of Ukraine and Azerbaijan presses on with the blockade in the hopes of gaining full control of the area, Nagorno-Karabakh is descending into a full-fledged humanitarian crisis.
Over the years of her son’s illness, Narine has learned how to relieve at least some of the seizures’ terrifying effects: turn on the lights and open a window to air out the room. Even these simple remedies are now impossible, however. Baku periodically cuts off electricity and gas supplies to the enclave, forcing Narine to live with an impossible dilemma of exposing her family to frigid temperatures or easing her son’s seizures. “There’s mostly no heating or light in my home,” she says. “If I open the windows, I’ll freeze the apartment completely. We’re shivering as it is.”
Tumblr media
Garo Danilyan
Narine Danilyan’s personal archive
The near-total blockade of the six-kilometer (four-mile) mountain pass leading to Nagorno-Karabakh, known as the Lachin Corridor, has been cutting off families like the Danilyans from the rest of the world for almost three months now. Azerbaijani protesters claiming to be eco-activists first blocked the route on December 12, 2022. The group began a round-the-clock sit-in, preventing nearly all movement on the road, and later set up tents. The self-described environmentalists claim to be protesting what Azerbaijan says is illegal mining in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The blockade has marked a new escalation in the decades-old dispute over a region internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but home to around 120,000 ethnic Armenians. Governed by the unrecognized Republic of Artsakh, it has been de facto independent since the early 1990s. Baku and Yerevan have fought two wars to gain control of Nagorno-Karabakh — one from 1988–1994 and another in 2020 — that have claimed tens of thousands of lives on both sides.
Azerbaijan’s government denies any blockade but has endorsed the protests, which Armenia says Baku orchestrated. In the meantime, the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh are cut off from food, fuel, and medicine supplies.
For the Danilyans, the medicine shortages are the most acute problem. Pharmacies in Stepanakert lack basic necessities, let alone remedies for seizures, and Narine has to scour local Facebook messageboards in hopes that some of her neighbors may have the pills. So far, this only yielded some vitamins and a carrot.

Empty shelves in a Stepanakert pharmacy
Nana Martirosyan’s personal archive
“There’s an ongoing epidemic of chicken pox and flu, and I can’t even provide my customers with suprastin [an antihistamine] and antiseptics,” Nana Martirosyan, a Stepanakert pharmacy owner, tells The Beet. “When someone asks for throat lozenges, I have to advise them to gargle with apple cider vinegar. When people come to buy mustard plasters, I explain how to make them yourself from parchment greased with a mix of sunflower oil and pepper.”
Garo requires a daily cocktail of up to 13 different anti-epileptic, anti-convulsant, respiratory, and antibacterial medications to subdue his seizures and cystic-fibrosis symptoms. And he’s out of all of them, except for some vitamins and salbutamol (a drug used to alleviate breathing problems). Without the meds, thick, sticky mucus clogs Garo’s airways, and his body “turns blue from oxygen deprivation,” Narine explains. Her son’s seizures (three bouts since the start of the blockade, all at night) cause him to black out while his body convulses.
“I don't look into his eyes when he spasms,” Narine says. “When I try, I feel sick. He has terrible eyes in these moments: glassy, neither open nor closed. He is just staring, completely unaware of his surroundings. It’s as if there’s an inanimate object instead of my kid.”
‘The world has abandoned us’
In mid-January, after yet another electricity shutdown, Nellie Melkumyan (name changed) went out to buy candles — but the supermarket shelves were empty.
“Then I tried the church store. The shopkeeper knows me: I normally take one big prayer candle so that I can light it and present my requests to God all at the same time. And now, out of the blue, I approach the counter and ask for three big candles at once!” Nellie recalls. “I used all of them for making coffee in a pot and illuminating my apartment — not for appealing to the Lord. It was like cheating! I felt really awkward about the whole thing, but I assuaged my guilt by telling myself that God wouldn’t want me to suffer without electricity.”

To keep warm, Nellie runs and does squats in her winter clothes (it doesn’t really help, she admits). Today’s Stepanakert is increasingly reminiscent of her Soviet youth, with its deficits of basic goods and food stamps, which the Nagorno-Karabakh authorities rolled out in January. “I saw a scuffle between women in line for eggs. There are occasional deliveries of peas or coffee, and, once word gets out, it’s a race,” Nellie says. “People spend hours hunting for food. Every other young salesgirl’s face now is marked with this blunt and fierce hostility I remember from my youth.”
But what really takes Nellie back to Soviet times is the sight of the Azerbaijani roadblocks. “I already lived through that in the 1990s, during the First Karabakh War. The blockade lasted four years — from 1988 to 1992,” Nellie tells The Beet. “I don’t care if the Azerbaijanis are intent on starving us out — I fear they’re going to try and enter Stepanakert next. We fear being slaughtered.”
During the Soviet period, when the mainly ethnic Armenian enclave was part of the Azerbaijan Soviet Republic, the two ethnicities coexisted despite lingering tensions. But old feuds reignited as the USSR unraveled. In 1988, Nagorno-Karabakh’s Armenian majority sought independence from Azerbaijan and campaigned to join Armenia. Unrest exploded into pogroms and the pogroms turned into a full-on war, resulting in thousands of deaths on both sides. The conflict ended with a 1994 ceasefire, with Armenia claiming control of not just Nagorno-Karabakh but also seven surrounding districts that were legally part of Azerbaijan.
Half a million Azerbaijanis were forced to flee the area.
The armistice lasted for a quarter century, but hostilities broke out again in 2020. This time around, Azerbaijan’s firepower proved superior, with the country’s oil wealth funding a fleet of sophisticated drones. The six-week war saw Azerbaijan recapture much of the territory it had lost in the 1990s, leaving Karabakh Armenians in control of just their de facto capital, Stepanakert, and the surrounding area. Now, inhabitants of these territories, trapped by the blockade, are at an increasing risk of famine.
“A cancer patient from our area craves bananas, but there’s no way of getting them. This might be his last wish. What’s it like for his loved ones to not be able to indulge him in such a trivial thing?” asks Anahit Petrosyan, an advisor to the head of the breakaway region’s Askeran Province.
During their last FaceTime call, Gegham Asryan learned from his wife that she had managed to procure a tangerine. The blockade has kept Gegham, a dentist, separated from his family in Stepanakert, leaving his wife Lucine to care for their six-year-old daughter Beatrice alone. Beatrice — or Betty as her father fondly calls her — sends him dozens of voice messages, in which she mostly cries without uttering a word.

“I can barely eat now,” Gegham tells the Beet. “Every time I’m peeling an orange, all I can think of is Betty and the food just gets stuck in my throat. The world has abandoned us. It’s blind and deaf to our suffering. And I hate it.”
Without access to fruits and vegetables, children are getting sick more often, said Stepanakert’s only pediatric ENT doctor Christina Agadzhanyan. “Their immunity has already gone down. My sons, who are four and six, haven’t seen fruit for a month. What sort of an environmental activist denies a child access to food?” she says. “The blockade’s participants hold up signs reading. ‘Artsakh people pollute the environment.’ Perhaps they mean the air that passes through our lungs? That even our breathing is contaminated?”
The protesters allege that Karabakh Armenians have been using the Lachin Corridor to export illegally-mined gold and are damaging the environment in the process. But observers have been quick to point out that few of the protesters have any prior record of eco-campaigning, and the ones who chant slogans the loudest are former Azerbaijani soldiers, members of President Ilham Aliyev’s ruling party, Azerbaijani pro-government activists, and employees at state companies.
“We did not see any of those people when the [Azerbaijani] Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry put up for sale whole forests and national parks,” said Cavid Qara, the head of Ecofront, a prominent Azerbaijani environmental organization.
Aliyev’s government is quick to crack down on grassroots protests at home, which makes it all the more remarkable that the blockade appears to have his government’s full backing: Aliyev has praised the activists, calling them “our pride,” and Azerbaijan’s Emergency Situations Ministry helped them to set up camp.
Armenia claims that Baku sent in the activists in order to ratchet up pressure on Karabakh Armenians and to force Yerevan into new concessions (allegations that Azerbaijan denies). Since the ceasefire in 2020, the two countries have been negotiating a peace treaty, but the talks have yet to yield a resolution, leaving the enclave in a legal limbo. Analysts say Azerbaijan is now pushing for a deal that would complete its military victory and cement its control over all of Nagorno-Karabakh.

‘We had to bury mom in Yerevan’
Khalisa Avetyan (surname changed) made her own funeral plans exactly 31 years ago, when she buried her son. Sincethat day in 1992, the Avetyans have had a family plot at the Stepanakert cemetery. On December 24, 2022, two weeks into the blockade, 90-year-old Khalisa died at her daughter’s home in Yerevan. But her family couldn’t take the body to Stepanakert; the crowd of protesters wouldn’t allow civilian cars through.
“The space on the tombstone next to my brother’s and father’s names will have to remain blank,” Khalisa’s daughter Karina tells The Beet. “We had to bury mom in Yerevan. We’d kept her in the morgue long enough already, waiting for the road to open. It kept me awake at night: I kept thinking how she’s there, in the freezer, instead of in the ground, as it should be. Mom came to me in my dreams to say how we’ve failed her, leaving her alone in a fridge.”
People trying to leave Stepanakert face the same problem: the Russian peacekeeping convoys and a small numberof Red Cross (ICRC) relief vehicles are the only ones that are able to pass, Nagorno-Karabakh officials say. In the first days of the blockade, even the evacuation of critically ill patients was impossible, and people died because they couldn’t reach Yerevan for procedures like chemotherapy and hemodialysis. By the time Red Cross ambulances found a way to take people to Armenia, at least 10 people were dead, the now ex-state minister of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Ruben Vardanyan, told Meduza in January.
One such victim was Norayr Mailyan, a herder from northeastern Karabakh who was “good at singing, dancing, and could make a joke about anything,” his sister Narine Sarkisyan recalls. Residents of Khanapat, the Mailyans’ ancestral village, called him “Jimmy” — a nickname borrowed from the 1982 Bollywood movie Disco Dancer, which became a sensation in the USSR right around the time Norayr was born.
At 26, Norayr suffered dual kidney failure. That meant lifelong hemodialysis. “After this, he was not the same Norayr, but he still loved dancing,” Narine tells The Beet. “Even if my eldest son had to support him by the shoulders, he kept dancing. Even when my brother couldn’t stand up at all and had just to sit on the couch, he kept waving his arms to the rhythm.”
In December 2022, Norayr became septic; his hemodialysis catheter, constantly connected to his arm, was the source of the infection and had to be removed. To start a new line, Norayr needed to reach doctors in Yerevan. He had an appointment scheduled for December 12 — the same day Azerbaijani protesters blocked the road out of Nagorno-Karabakh.

NARINE SARKISYAN’S PERSONAL ARCHIVE
Norayr never reached Yerevan. Unable to pass through the blockade, he fell into a coma and died on December 19. His wake (including a memorial meal of “green-pea salad and traditional kurkut porridge with sausages”) was held in Khanapat.
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry denies that the Lachin Corridor’s closure has created a humanitarian crisis, and the protesters insist that they’re moving aside for any medical vehicles. “I don't know which blockade you’re talking about. If you were fair, you probably wouldn't be using such a phrase. Indeed, the bias in the questions of such a beautiful and young journalist is not suitable for professional activity,” Ilqar Orucov, one of the protest’s organizers, told The Beet’s correspondent.
“Norayr died at 42!” exclaims Narine. “The Azerbaijanis won’t be sleeping peacefully, I promise you. We’ll haunt their dreams.”
‘Putin, keep your word’
In one of his pencil drawings, Garo Danilyan sketched three human silhouettes under a crudely drawn sun. Upon taking a closer look, it’s clear that the figures are wearing military uniforms, and the squiggles between the soldiers represent barbed wire and border fencing.
Just like in Garo’s drawing, the Armenian and Azerbaijani militaries face each other along the still undemarcated border between the two countries. But one element is missing from the sketch: ever since the 2020 war ended in an armistice brokered by Vladimir Putin, heavily armed Russian peacekeepers moved in to enforce the shaky truce. Nearly 2,000 Russian troops were deployed to protect Armenians remaining in the enclave and to ensure that the Lachin Corridor remained open. But the peacekeepers failed to prevent the blockade — and seem powerless to break it.
On December 27, Garo and Narine — along with dozens of other men, women, and children — marched to the gates of the Russian peacekeeping headquarters to demand answers. “[Garo] was coughing and barely breathing, but he made me come with him to this rally,” Narine says, a touch of pride in her voice.
One young woman carried a sign with the words: “We trusted you.” Another read, “Putin, keep your word.” Moscow and Yerevan have been allies for years, and Karabakh Armenians largely welcomed the arrival of peacekeepers two years ago. Now, anger is building as Russia appears reluctant to force the road’s reopening.
During the December 27 rally, Garo and the rest of the crowd kept yelling at the headquarters until the guards came outside, says Narine. The protesters demanded to see Major General Andrey Volkov, but the peacekeepers were unable to get hold of their commander. Demonstrators waited until dawn, but Volkov never showed.
Moscow has been distracted by its own flagging war in Ukraine and hasn’t intervented in Nagorno-Karabakh, despite Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s direct pleas to Putin. “It’s unacceptable for us that the Russian peacekeepers are becoming a silent witness to the depopulation of Nagorno-Karabakh,” Pashinyan said two weeks into the blockade.

The Kremlin is tiptoeing around the situation in Karabakh because it can’t risk getting entangled in another fight — this time with Azerbaijan, analysts believe. Baku, meanwhile, leaped at the chance to defy Russia’s presence in the region. “Moscow’s quest to increase its influence has left it a diminished and less formidable power in the South Caucasus,” Jade McGlynn, a researcher at the Department of War Studies at King’s College London, told Time magazine.
Russian peacekeepers’ vehicles — heavy trucks or passenger cars with a telltale blue line running across the side, some of them emblazoned with the letter “Z” — can be seen in every other Armenian town on the road to Nagorno-Karabakh. Some of the soldiers’ families live in Tegh, the last settlement before crossing the border of the unrecognized republic. It looks like an eerie ghost town. A chilly mountain fog fills every crevice and descends on the Lachin Corridor. About 800 cars once passed through it every day, but road traffic has declined tenfold since the blockade.
Except for the occasional villager, soldiers are now the main customers at Tegh’s Sara Supermarket. The shop also serves as a duty free store for Russian peacekeepers rotating through Nagorno-Karabakh’s border: giant bottles of whiskey in the shape of a crucifix are kept under the counter just for Russian soldiers returning home from duty, Esmine Ghazaryan, a supermarket employee (whose name has been changed), tells The Beet.
One peacekeeper — a gaunt man with a layer of grime on his camouflage uniform — walks inside to buy a screwdriver. Overhearing our correspondent’s question about the blockade, he holds her gaze for a moment, then fixes his eyes on the counter. “Of course I know there are children [isolated] in Stepanakert. But that road is blocked off. I'm a driver, come and look at my KamAZ truck full of water waiting outside. Even I got stuck here! They won’t let me through,” the soldier says. “The decision-makers are up there. Only they can give us the right to clear the road. We’re not responsible.”
The peacekeeper rushes back to his truck, leaving his change on the counter. “The blockade’s going on right under their noses. Yet they’re doing nothing,” says Esmine. “Another peacekeeper I know says he ‘received no order to ban the Azeris.’ I think he’s embarrassed they’re so powerless now.”

The road to Stepanakert. January 21, 2023.
LILIA YAPPAROVA / MEDUZA
From Tegh, it’s just three kilometers (two miles) of highland switchbacks to the border. The serpentine road leading to Nagorno-Karabakh is covered with ice and shrouded in impenetrable fog, hiding the expanse of mountains. Flocks of sheep bleat hungrily in the invisible chasm.
An Armenian military police officer mans the first checkpoint at the border. He casts a melancholic and somewhat compassionate look at The Beet’s correspondent. “Sorry, can’t let you in,” he says. “I’m from Stepanakert myself. [I’ve] got a family there. I honestly don’t know what to tell you about the blockade. [When it ends] I think we’ll be the last to know.”
That’s all for this week!

Military intelligence comments on next reported transfer of Ukrainian POWs to Hungary
Tumblr media
The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) is planning another transfer of Ukrainian prisoners of war to Hungary, the Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) spokesperson Andrii Yusov told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty on July 14, following earlier media reports.
Yusov said that the Ukrainian special services received information on the second hand-over and are now further investigating it.
The plan is reportedly conducted under the auspices of Russian special services, but the ROC is involved as a “mediator” between Russia and Hungary, Yusov said.
RBC Ukraine wrote on July 13 that Hungary and the Russian church are planning yet another transfer of 10-15 Ukrainian captives of Hungarian ethnic origin.
The military intelligence spokesperson confirmed that the prisoners in question should have Hungarian background and be able to speak Hungarian.

Ukraine’s westernmost Zakarpattia Oblast is home to around 150,000 ethnic Hungarians, including 400 serving in the Ukrainian army.
The ROC previously handed over 11 Ukrainian POWs of Hungarian origin to Budapest in early June. Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén later confirmed the transfer but Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó denied Budapest’s involvement in organizing the hand-over.
On June 19, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry demanded immediate consular access to the POWs held in Hungary. According to the ministry, they were kept in isolation without access to open sources of information and were unable to communicate with relatives without “third parties” presence.
However, Szijjártó responded that the Ukrainian POWs “can move freely in Hungary and do whatever they want."
Yusov said that five soldiers have already been returned from the first group. The released captives testified on the pressure exerted against them by Russian special services, the military intelligence spokesperson said.
Ukraine still does not have access to the remaining prisoners in Hungary, he added.

Clinical Trials in Life Sciences Scientech: Propelling Clinical Exploration for a Better Future
Tumblr media
Introduction Clinical trials assume a pivotal part in the field of life sciences Scientech, empowering specialists to investigate imaginative clinical mediations, assess their wellbeing and viability, and carry novel medicines to patients. These trials are painstakingly planned, carefully executed, and broadly directed processes that add to the advancement and improvement of medical services. By exposing expected treatments to thorough testing and assessment, clinical trials act as the foundation of proof-based medication. This article expects to give an exhaustive outline of clinical trials in the life sciences of Scientech, featuring their importance, stages, administrative structure, moral contemplations, and future possibilities.
Meaning of Clinical Trials Clinical trials are fundamental for propelling clinical exploration and have a few key advantages. First and foremost, they give amazing chances to survey the security and adequacy of new medications, treatments, and clinical gadgets before they are endorsed for inescapable use. Clinical trials likewise empower specialists to acquire experiences in illness systems, patient reactions, and treatment results, prompting further developed medical services rehearses. Moreover, these trials cultivate cooperation between different partners, like scientists, doctors, patients, and administrative bodies, to drive advancement and improve patient consideration.
Periods of Clinical Trials Clinical trials regularly comprise of four particular stages, each filling a particular need. Stage 1 trials include a little gathering of sound workers and a spotlight on deciding the well-being and measurements scope of the mediation. Stage 2 trials extend the member pool to patients impacted by the designated condition, assessing the treatment's viability and likely incidental effects. Stage 3 trials include bigger populaces and plan to affirm the treatment's viability while checking its antagonistic responses in contrast with existing medicines. At last, Stage 4 trials, directed after endorsement, assemble extra information on the mediation's drawn-out impacts and advantages.
Administrative Structure Clinical trials stick to severe administrative structures to guarantee patient well-being, information trustworthiness, and moral direction. Administrative bodies, like the Food and Medication Organization (FDA) in the US, the European Prescriptions Office (EMA) in Europe, and other public specialists, assume a fundamental part in supervising and endorsing clinical trials. These administrative bodies evaluate the preliminary conventions, audit gathered information, and settle on informed choices with respect to the medication's endorsement or dismissal in light of the proof introduced. Consistency with moral rules, including informed assent, security of member freedoms, and classification, is of most extreme significance all through the preliminary cycle.
Moral Contemplations Moral contemplations are principal in clinical trials to protect the government assistance of members and keep up with public confidence in the examination endeavor. Informed assent guarantees that members are completely mindful of the preliminary's motivation, expected dangers, advantages, and options before deliberately consenting to take part. Moral audit sheets or institutional survey sheets (IRBs) audit and endorse preliminary conventions, guaranteeing they comply with moral rules and limit any possible damage. Keeping up with the classification and security of member information through the preliminary and ensuing analysis is additionally essential.
Difficulties and Future Possibilities Clinical trials face different difficulties, for example, enlisting a fitting number of members, guaranteeing variety in the member pool, and overseeing calculated intricacies. Moreover, tough guidelines and the significant expense of directing trials present huge obstacles. In any case, progressions in innovation, like virtual trials and telemedicine, can possibly address a portion of these difficulties. Besides, accurate medication, biomarker-based approaches, and versatile preliminary plans hold a guarantee in improving the proficiency and viability of clinical trials, prompting customized treatments and better persistent results.
End Clinical trials in life sciences Scientech are fundamental to the advancement of new therapies, the improvement of existing treatments, and the development of clinical information. Through cautious planning, steady execution, and adherence to moral rules, clinical trials give important proof to help clinical mediation. They act as the establishment for proof-based medication and assist with propelling medical care by empowering the revelation and assessment of inventive treatments. While challenges persevere, proceeding with headways in innovation and advancing preliminary plans offer expect to smooth out the cycle and carry novel medicines to patients all the more proficiently. As clinical trials keep on assuming an essential part in forming the fate of medication, it is urgent to focus on their direct, moral contemplations, and administrative oversight to guarantee the prosperity of members and the advancement of medical services all in all.
