CHICANO ART MOVEMENT: Farewell to MCASD Downtown 2024
In April 2024, we learned through the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s “Letter to the Community: MCASD Downtown” that of “ the current status of our downtown buildings. Prompted by expanded capacity and enhanced opportunities at our flagship La Jolla location, we’ve made a strategic decision to discontinue satellite operations downtown.” Checkout the slideshow of our past visit to the downtown location of MCASD in 2010 & 2015.

15 min city research (2)
I looked at some contemporary designs of museums and event spaces.
the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego by Happening Studio
Tumblr media
I really like the colors even though they are not as vivid as the D&S branding it still gives it a fun playful look. I think its really interesting how MCASD is layed out typographically with huge gaps. Apperently it was inspired by how Ladislav Sutnar, the graphic designer added parentheses to telephone area-code numbers to make them more memorable.

The Nick Bernal/matty terrones audio book my label released, Les Tirs, got a nice write-up from Julia Dixon Evans over at the San Diego NPR station, KPBS:
If you prefer to have fiction read aloud to you, accompanied by gentle yet unsettling instrumental music, I have a recommendation for you. If you like your short stories set in the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego La Jolla Campus at an opening night reception for the Niki de Saint Phalle exhibition, and there's also some sort of climate apocalypse? Boy do I have a recommendation for you.
Hello America Stereo Cassette is a "record label for writers," the brainchild of former San Diegan Adam Gnade. Stories are released on cassette tape, but you can also get downloadable files to stream if you don't have access to a tape deck. Their recent release, "Les Tirs," is a collaboration between local writer, publisher and Burn All Books co-founder Nick Bernal and musician Matty Terrones. Bernal's storytelling is sharp, with a keen use of detail and a balance of softness and violence that left me thinking about it long after the recording ended. He juggles multiple points of view seamlessly and cleverly, and weaves apocalyptic fear with a sense of jadedness and resignation that honestly felt too real after the last few years we've had.
The story's name is a nod to Saint Phalle's "Tirs," or shooting paintings, which were featured at MCASD when it reopened in April. There are several references to other works of art in the story, including the tables of artisan gifts in the gift shop. And be sure to listen to the whole thing for an excellent (and terrifying) use of Robert Irwin's 1997 site-specific work, "1°2°3°4°" at the story's climax.

WEEK 10 (10/28/22)
This week's reading discussed editing. Editing seems like a broad term, and perhaps that's why there's so many types of editing involved in publication. I'm only accustomed to editing in the form of proofreading, and that's what I expected to learn about in this reading, but it's more nuanced than that. You've also got developmental editing and copy editing to account for. And in conjunction with this, you've got an entire system of errors and "blame". The entire process seems very complicated and meticulous, and since mistakes can be so costly, it's seems like finding and training quality editors is a must for most industries.
The L+MCASD project is developing nicely. I'm very happy with the mascot I've chosen, and I think it really fits the character of an energized and "jumpy" city like Las Vegas. I was advised to stray away from emphasizing the "Jack" in "Jack Rabbit" to allude to anything gambling related, so I'll likely throw out the card design that I made. That said, one concept that I am interested in developing is that of a rabbit coming out the top of a basketball net. This coincides with the rabbit coming out of magician's hat. I'd also like to fine-tune the basketball with rabbit ears design, as that is my favorite logo out of the ones I've created so far.

This is the special exhibit currently at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego about an artist I knew nothing about - Niki De Saint Phalle who made assemblage, dinosaurs and feminist art ("Nanas" series) ten years ahead of the curve as well as shot her paintings with guns and canons full of paint ("Tir" series).
... And she was a smokin' hottie on the pages of Vogue in 1968.

So, I took my @canonusa to the reopening of the @mcasandiego in La Jolla and it was everything I envisioned. Random side story. My 50MM f1.4 lens barrel wasn’t calibrated, and so the pics weren’t tack sharp like I usually love them to be. Ironically, it reminded me of shooting with a film camera in the 70s. So, the experience was everthing that I dreamed about: A beautiful view, beautiful art, with beautiful people, @calebwithcurls @courtneysdade and @flemingdale. Of course I had to add some street photography, and architecture photography in the mix as well. The most intriguing art piece that stood out to me was the old school pomade, “wave grease” Duke and Royal Crown, with a wall full of press n combs. That was pretty spectacular to see Black Culture as artistic merit. I used wave grease and my Mom used a press And Comb. Anyway, it was fun, and a true creative release. Which museum do you think we should tour next? 📸: @ivansharrisphotography @canonusa R6 Canon EF 50mmf1.4 #IvanSHarrisPhotography #MuseumOfContemporaryArtSanDiego #LaJolla #Reopening #Museum #MCASD #photography #sandiegophotographer #Artist #Photographer (at La Jolla Contemporary Art Museum, La Jolla, CA) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdwSGp-PXb5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
