Us Movie Review
Tumblr media
Every year brings many horror films that provide the basics, and very few that rise above them. Get Out was widely praised as one of the latter; I disagreed, one of my more contentious opinions on movies. To my great satisfaction, the issues I saw in Jordan Peele’s first directorial effort are almost entirely absent in his second feature. If it just avoided doing things wrong, though, it wouldn’t be as good as it is. Whereas Get Out was content to insert some heavy-handed social commentary into a traditional formula and call it revolutionary, Us truly brings fresh ideas to the genre.
Much as Get Out was essentially a horror twist on Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, Us brings another outside plot to the genre, this one from superheroes: the heroic team who meets their evil doubles. We start in 1986, in a visually stunning sequence: young Adelaide (newcomer Madison Curry) is neglected by her dysfunctional parents (it is notable that we never see their faces for long) at an amusement park at Santa Cruz, so she wanders off. As a storm rolls in on the beach she makes her way to an abandoned hall of mirrors, complete with a scary pop-up owl and a fake-out for an exit. There, she encounters a well-worn horror trope: her reflection behaves differently than she does.
The movie cuts to the present day, and adult Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o), who has returned with her family to their vacation house near the same beach (note that the family appears reasonably well-off, though not rich, a rarity for horror films; just last year, the entirety of the last Purge movie took place in a stereotypical “hood”). Her husband Gabe (Winston Duke) is a lovable oaf, brave and protective but not in a “grunt grunt, man tough” way. He’s assigned the job of doing some of the dumb things horror movie plots require to function, but because his character has already been presented as both loving and slightly dim, we mostly overlook these lapses of judgement. It helps that they do not occur with anything like the frequency they typically do. Daughter Zora (Shahadi Wright Joseph) is on the verge of true teenagedom---she doesn’t want to hang out with the vapid twin teens (Cali and Noelle Sheldon) belonging to her parents’ sniping and materialistic friends (Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker), but she’s also getting a bit too old for her younger brother Jason (Evan Alex).
Peele spends enough time on family dynamics---the pranks played by the siblings on each other, a hopeful lovemaking session between parents thwarted by pesky feelings, the singular joy of your kids not getting an old song that is just the greatest thing ever---that by the time we get to the scares, these people are well-established for the genre; in another twist on what is usual, it is the white characters who are bare outlines thrown in just to have someone to kill off. The Wilson family, on the other hand, are strange and complex people by the time their copycats show up on the front walk. They appear in red jumpsuits, holding hands, are unresponsive to Gabe’s commands, and quickly launch an invasion of the home. Once they have the family at their mercy, Adelaide’s double---named Red in the credits, though like most of the doppleganger names I can’t recall this ever being mentioned in the film itself---proceeds to tell a macabre tale I won’t reveal here. She then initiates a game, which is where the superhero comparison comes in. The doubles have come prepared, with a strategy to exploit the weaknesses and personalities of their prey; much of the rest of the film is a game of cat and mouse as each tries to outwit and overcome the other. The body language of these beings, which is meant to mirror and exaggerate the worst traits of their heroic doubles, is incredibly unnerving; physicality is too often overlooked in modern horror, though the template of the genre, The Exorcist, excelled in it.
Tumblr media
There’s no attempt on the part of Peele to disguise the fact these things are some sort of dark copies of the heroes; it is explicitly revealed in the trailers and in the film’s title. It is a rather masterful bit of slight of hand on his part. We think the duplicate angle is the point of the film, but at the very beginning there is some seemingly unrelated text about there being vast lengths of disused tunnel underneath the United States; I held this in my mind through the first act, but such is the tension of the second that by the time it becomes important to the story, I had nearly forgotten it. Those tunnels turn out to produce an apocalypse, and end up providing a thrilling third act that grants us a great, unexpected mercy: something different for horror. I don’t dare discuss it in detail, for in it Peele’s script and direction, Nyong’o’s stunning ability to act convincingly while playing dual roles that are both fighting each other, and the incredible camerawork of Mike Gioulakis come together in a way that, by itself, may cause me to go see the movie twice in theatres, a rarity. Suffice it to say the dopplegangers are flesh and blood, and that the resolution does not feel like cheating. The final twist could be seen coming a mile away, but it is at least well-earned, and notably more morally ambiguous than how it is usually used.
The visionary elements of Get Out whose visionary-ness I questioned were mostly concerned with the supposedly deep subtext of the film. Some saw endless layers of meaning concerning the place of African Americans in our society; I personally thought the “slavery is still a thing, guys” point was incredibly obvious. Us eschews direct 1-to-1 metaphors in favor of a few different possible interpretations, all of which could be true at once. To a history buff like myself, the idea of our doom coming from underground places we’ve forgotten of course recalls the old adage about those who fail to learn from the past. Masks are employed to suggest the ways we hide ourselves, while an excess of rabbits seem to represent a cycle of life, suggesting the film’s antagonists devour other life the same way they feel they themselves have been devoured. I could discuss this all for some time, but the reason the movie works is because, whereas taking Get Out’s metaphors away would leave the film toothless, this one is excellent even if you completely overlook them. It functions as a film first, and doesn’t need to sermonize on society to grip and terrify us. That it does that, and does it effectively, is evidence of Peele’s creative evolution.

Let me just educate you for a little bit on the Salem Witch Trails of 1692: (which every witch should know about)
small note: I used multiple sources along with old family stories passed on from my ancestors. Also please take in account that it is 4am and I spent over an hour gathering this information and even woke my mom up to ask questions. Ignore all grammatical errors. Thank you.
Quick Brief Explaination
The trails were triggered from fear, the fear of the Devil. It was said that witches would worship him and do his bidding. Christians believed that the devil was constantly trying to find ways to infiltrate and destroy Christians and their communities. This created panic and hysteria which resulted in a witch hunt. Although, the slave Tituba’s confession was the main reason as to why the Salem Witch Trials ended up happening. While the colonists had accused and convicted people of witchcraft before, starting with Margaret Jones in 1648, no one had ever actually confessed to being a witch before or ever stated that there were other witches out there. This resulted in adding more stress onto the colonists. The environment in Salem was extremely tense from multiple factors, which made the colonists believe that the devil was to blame for all of their issues.
The actual trials began in the spring of 1962, after a group of young girls who fell ill after playing a fortune-telling game in Salem Village, Massachusetts filled claims that they were possessed by Satan and then accused local women of witchcraft. The girls later came to be known as the ‘afflicted girls.’
Afflicted Girls: Elizabeth Booth Elizabeth Hubbard Mercy Lewis Betty Parris Ann Putnam, Jr. Susannah Sheldon Abigail Williams Mary Walcott Mary Warren
“The first of the girls to start experiencing symptoms was Betty Parris, followed by Abigail Williams, Ann Putnam Jr., Mary Walcott and Mercy Lewis. Shortly after, Elizabeth Hubbard, Susannah Sheldon, Mary Warren and Elizabeth Booth all started to experience the same symptoms, which consisted of suffering “fits,” hiding under furniture, contorting in pain and experiencing fever. Many modern theories suggest the girls were suffering from epilepsy, boredom, child abuse, mental illness or even a disease brought on by eating rye infected with fungus. In February, Samuel Parris called for a doctor, who is believed to be Dr. William Griggs, to examine the girls. The doctor was unable to find anything physically wrong with them and suggested they may be bewitched. Shortly after, two of the girls named the women they believed were bewitching them. These women were Sarah Good, Sarah Osburn and a slave named Tituba who worked for Reverend Samuel Parris. These three women were social outcasts and easy targets for the accusation of witchcraft. It was not difficult for the people of Salem to believe they were involved in witchcraft. On March 1st, Tituba, Sarah Good and Sarah Osburn were arrested and examined. During Tituba’s examination, she made a shocking confession that she had been approached by Satan, along with Sarah Good and Sarah Osburn, and they had all agreed to do his bidding as witches.” Which as I said before her confession is what triggered the fear that lead to the massive witch hunt. It had also silenced any opposition to the idea that the Devil had infiltrated Salem.
Quick Facts
It’s a common myth that the Salem Witch Trials victims     were burned at the stake. The fact is, no accused witches were burned at     the stake in Salem, Massachusetts. Salem was ruled by English law at the     time, which only allowed death by burning to be used against men who     committed high treason and only after they had been hanged, quartered and     drawn.
Bridget Bishop was the first convicted “witch” that was     hung, that year on June 10, 1692, at a place that is now called Proctor’s     Ledge. She had been accused of witchcraft years before, but she ended up     being cleared of the crime. She was accused by five of the afflicted     girls, Abigail Williams, Ann Putnam Jr., Mercy Lewis, Mary Walcott and     Elizabeth Hubbard, who stated she had physically hurt them and tried to     make them sign a pact with the devil.
“I am innocent, I know nothing of it, I have done no witchcraft …. I am as innocent as the child unborn…” -Bridget Bishop during her trial
Many of the people accused of and punished for being     witches, actually weren’t witches. The actual witches stayed silent and     laid low before eventually fleeing Salem.
Not everyone in Salem actually believed in witchcraft     or supported the trials. There were many critics of the witch hunt, such     as a local farmer John Proctor, who scoffed at the idea of witchcraft in     Salem and called the young girls scam artists. Critics such as Proctor     were quickly accused of witchcraft themselves, under the assumption that     anyone who denied the existence of witches or defended the accused must be     one of them, and were brought to trial. Proctor’s entire family was     accused, including all of his children, his pregnant wife Elizabeth, and     sister-in-law.
The trials were held in the Salem courthouse, which was     located in the center of Washington Street about 100 feet south of Lynde     Street, opposite of where the Masonic Temple now stands. The courthouse     was torn down in 1760 but a plaque dedicated to the courthouse can still     be seen today on the wall of the Masonic Temple on Washington Street.
Many of the women accused were unpopular social     outcasts.
Spectral evidence, evidence based on dreams and visions     was the most common evidence and the easiest evidence for accusers to     fake. Other evidence used in the trials included confessions of the     accused, possession of certain items such as poppets, ointments or books     on the occult, as well as the presence of an alleged “witch’s teat,” which     was a strange mole or blemish, on the accused person’s body.
Finally, on September 22, the last hangings of the     Salem Witch Trials occurred.
Two victims include two dogs who were shot or killed after being suspected     of witchcraft.

The Witchcraft Trial of Elizabeth Proctor
Tumblr media
Elizabeth Proctor, wife of Salem Village farmer John Proctor, was accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials in 1692.
The Proctors were a wealthy family who lived on a large rented farm on the outskirts of Salem Village, in what is now modern day Peabody. Elizabeth, Proctor’s third wife, married Proctor in April of 1674, two years after the death of his second wife, Elizabeth Thorndike.
Elizabeth Proctor’s Early Life:
Elizabeth Proctor, whose maiden name was Bassett, was also the granddaughter of Goody Burt, a folk healer from Lynn who had been tried, but acquitted, on charges of witchcraft over 30 years earlier.
In the spring of 1692, after some of the afflicted girls began having fits and claimed that invisible forces were tormenting them, the Proctor’s servant, Mary Warren, began showing the same symptoms.
John Proctor, who believed the afflicted girls were just pretending to be afflicted, accused Warren of faking her symptoms and threatened to beat her if she continued. Warren’s fits quickly stopped but as soon as John Proctor left on business a few days later, her symptoms returned and she joined the ongoing witch trials as a witness.

Elizabeth Proctor’s Arrest and Trial:
In late March, two of the afflicted girls, Mercy Lewis and Abigail Williams, claimed Elizabeth Proctor visited them at night in spirit form and tormented them.
On April 4, John Walcott and Nathaniel Ingersoll filed an official complaint against Elizabeth Proctor, on behalf of Abigail Williams, John Indian, Mary Walcott, Ann Putnam, Jr., and Mercy Lewis, and a warrant was issued for her arrest.
After she was apprehended, Elizabeth Proctor was brought to the Salem Village meetinghouse on April 11 and examined by Judge Thomas Danforth, according to court records:
Q. Elizabeth Proctor! you understand whereof you are charged, viz. to be guilty of sundry acts of witchcraft; what say you to it? Speak the truth, and so you that are afflicted, you must speak the truth, as you will answer it before God another day. Mary Walcott! doth this woman hurt you? A. I never saw her so as to be hurt by her. Q. Mary Lewis! does she hurt you? — Her mouth was stopped. Q. Ann Putnam, does she hurt you? — She could not speak. Q. Abigail Williams! does she hurt you? — Her hand was thrust in her own mouth. Q. John! does she hurt you? A. This is the woman that came in her shift and choked me. Q. did she ever bring the book? A. Yes, Sir. Q. What to do? A. to write. Q. What, this woman? A. Yes, Sir. Q. Are you sure of it? A. Yes, Sir. — Again, Abigail Williams and Ann Putnam were spoke to by the court, but neither of them could make any answer, by reason of dumbness or other fits. Q. What do you say Goody Proctor to these things? A. I take God in heaven to be my witness, that I know nothing of it, no more than the child unborn.
As the examination continued, Elizabeth Proctor’s accusers began to shift their attention to Elizabeth’s servant, Mary Warren, and her husband, John Proctor:
Q. Abigail Williams! does this woman hurt you? A. Yes, Sir, often. Q. Does she bring the book to you? A. Yes. Q. What would she have you do with it? A. To write in it and I shall be well. — Did not you, said Abigail, tell me, that your maid had written? A.(Proctor) Dear Child, it is not so. There is another judgement, dear child. Then Abigail and Ann had fits. By and by they cried out, look you there is Goody Proctor upon the beam. By and by, both of them cried out of Goodman Proctor himself, and said he was a wizard. Immediately, many, if not all of the bewitched, had grievous fits. Q. Ann Putnam! who hurt you? A. Goodman Proctor and his wife too. — Afterwards some of the afflicted cried, there is Proctor going to take up Mrs. Pope’s feet. — And her feet were immediately taken up. Q. What do you say Goodman Proctor to these things? A. I know not, I am innocent. Abigail Williams cried out, there is Goodman Proctor going to Mrs. Pope , and immediately, said Pope fell into a fit. — You see the devil will deceive you; the children could see what you was going to do before the woman was hurt. I would advise you to repentance, for the devil is bringing you out. Abigail Williams cried out again, there is Goodman Proctor going to hurt Goody Bibber; and immediately Goody Bibber fell into a fit. There was the like of Mary Walcott , and divers others. Benjamin Gould gave in his testimony, that he had seen Goodman Corey and his wife, Proctor and his wife, Goody Cloyce, Goody Nurse, and Goody Griggs in his chamber last Thursday night. Elizabeth Hubbard was in a trance during the whole examination. During the examination of Elizabeth Proctor, Abigail Williams and Ann Putnam, both made offer to strike at said Proctor; but when Abigail’s hand came near, it opened, whereas it was made up into a fist before, and came done exceeding lightly, as it drew near to said Proctor, and at length with open and extended fingers, touched Proctor’s hood very lightly. Immediately Abigail cried out, her fingers, her fingers, burned, and Ann Putnam took on most grievously, of her head, and sunk down.
It is not known exactly why the afflicted girls targeted Elizabeth Proctor, but in the 1953 play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams is depicted as having an affair with John Proctor and becomes jealous of Elizabeth Proctor, prompting her to accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft.
The age difference between Abigail, 11, and John, 60, makes this unlikely and there’s no proof that Abigail Williams even knew Elizabeth or John Proctor before the witch hysteria.
Yet, Miller wrote in an essay in the New Yorker in 1996 that it was a moment during Elizabeth Proctor’s examination, when Abigail raises her hand to strike Elizabeth, that convinced him that John and Abigail had an affair:
“In this remarkably observed gesture of a troubled young girl, I believed, a play became possible. Elizabeth Proctor had been the orphaned Abigail’s mistress, and they had lived together in the same small house until Elizabeth fired the girl. By this time, I was sure, John Proctor had bedded Abigail, who had to be dismissed most likely to appease Elizabeth. There was bad blood between the two women now. That Abigail started, in effect, to condemn Elizabeth to death with her touch, then stopped her hand, then went through with it, was quite suddenly the human center of all this turmoil.”
In April, due to overcrowding in the Salem jail, Elizabeth Proctor was transferred to the jail in Boston, along with Rebecca Nurse, Martha Corey, Dorothy (Dorcas) Good and Sarah Cloyce.
The following month, three of the Proctor’s children, William, Benjamin and Sarah were also accused and arrested, as was Elizabeth Proctor’s sister, Mary Bassett DeRich, and her sister-in-law Sarah Bassett.
Sarah Proctor and Sarah Bassett were both accused on May 21 by John and Thomas Putnam, on behalf of Abigail Williams, Mary Walcott, Mercy Lewis and Ann Putnam, Jr., and arrested shortly after.
Benjamin Proctor was accused a few days later on May 23rd, by Nathaniel Ingersoll and Thomas Rayment, on behalf of Mary Warren, Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Hubbard, and arrested by Marshal Deputy John Putnam. William Proctor was accused on May 28th by Mary Walcott and Susannah Sheldon and arrested by constable John Putnam.
Although Mary Warren wasn’t one of Elizabeth’s original accusers, she testified against both Elizabeth and John Proctor during their trials, claiming that their spirits beat, pinched and choked her at night, according to court records:
“The Deposition of Mary Warren aged about 20 years do testefieth and saith I have often seen the apparition of Elizabeth Procter the wife of John proctor among the witches and she hath often tortured me most greviously by biting me and choking me and pinching me and pressing my stomach tell the blood came out of my mouth and also upon the day of her examination I saw her torture Mary Walcott, Mercy Lewis, Ann Putnam, Elizabeth Hubbard, Abigail Williams and she hath ever since at times tortured me most greviously Mary Warren owned this here testimony to be the truth before the Jurors of Inquest this 30 of June 1692.”
After their arrests, many of the Proctor’s friends banded together and signed a petition declaring them innocent and asked for their release:
“We whose names are under written having several years known John Proctor and his wife do testify that we never heard or understood that they were ever suspected to be guilty of the crime now charged upon them and several of us being their near neighbours do testify that to our apprehension they lived christian life in their family and were ever ready to help such as stood in need of their help Nathaniel Felton sen: and mary his wife Samuel Marsh and Prescilla his wife James Houlton and Ruth his wife John Felton Nathaniel Felton jun Samuell Frayll and an his wife Zachriah Marsh and mary his wife Samuel Endecott and hanah his wife Samuell Stone George Locker Samuel Gaskil & provided his wife George Smith Ed Edward: Gaskile”
Neither the petition, nor the letter John Proctor sent to the Boston clergy in July pleading that the trials be moved to Boston, helped their situation.
On August 5, both Elizabeth and John Proctor were found guilty and sentenced to death. Since Elizabeth was pregnant at the time of her conviction, her execution was postponed until after she gave birth. John Proctor pleaded for more time as well, claiming he was too ill for the execution, but was hanged on August 19th.
On January 27, 1693, Elizabeth Proctor gave birth to a boy and named him John Proctor III, after his father. Although she had given birth, Elizabeth was not immediately executed, for reasons unknown.
In May of that same year, after the witch hysteria had died down and most of the prisoners had been released due to a lack of evidence, Governor Phipps released the remaining prisoners, which included Elizabeth Proctor.
Elizabeth Proctor After the Salem Witch Trials:
Although she was free from jail, as a convicted witch Elizabeth was still guilty in the eyes of the law and therefore had no legal rights. To make matters worse, John Proctor’s will made no mention of Elizabeth, most likely because he expected she would be executed along with him.
As a result, Elizabeth was penniless, according to the book The Salem Witch Trials: A Day By Day Chronicle of a Community Under Siege:
“Elizabeth Proctor, condemned but freed with her newborn (if he survived), found her late husband’s farm picked clean. John Proctor’s will made no mention of his widow, so Elizabeth had not a penny from it, neither her widow’s third nor the dowry that she had brought to the marriage. When she protested, her stepchildren ignored even her prenuptial contract and replied that she could not inherit, for, being condemned to hang, she was dead in the law.”
Even if Elizabeth were able to inherit John’s estate, there wasn’t much left of it since most of it had been confiscated while John and Elizabeth were in prison, according to Robert Calef in his book More Wonders of the Invisible World:
“John Procter and his wife being in prison, the sheriff came to his house and seized all the goods, provisions, and cattle that he could come at, and sold some of the cattle at half price, and killed others, and put them up for the West-Indies; threw out the beer out of a barrel, and carried away the barrel; emptied a pot of broth, and took away the pot, and left nothing in the house for the support of the children: No part of the said goods are known to be returned.”
Elizabeth’s luck finally began to improve in March of 1694-5, when court records indicate that the will of John Proctor was admitted to probate in the Probate Court of Essex County under the complaint of Thomas and Elizabeth Very (John Proctor’s eldest daughter from his marriage to Elizabeth Thorndike).
On April 15, 1695, the committee reported a division of the estate according to the will. There is no record confirming it, but it can only be assumed by this event that John Proctor’s legal rights, which had been stripped when he was convicted, had at some point been restored and therefore his family finally had access to what was left of his estate.
It was shortly after this event, in May of 1696, when Elizabeth Proctor petitioned the General Court to restore her own legal rights. In doing so, she asked for the rights to her husband’s estate or at the very least, the dowry she brought to the marriage:
“To the Honourable General Court Assembled at Boston May twenty seventh 1696
the Humble petition of Elizabeth Proctor widow and relict of John Proctor of Salem deceased humbly sheweth that in the year of our Lord 1692 when many persons in Salem and in other towns there about were accused by some evil disposed or strangely influenced persons as being witches or for being guilty of acting witch-craft my sd husband John Proctor and myself were accused as such and we both: my sd husband and myself were so far proceeded against that we were condemned but in that sad time of darkness before my said husband was executed it is evident somebody had contrived a will and brought it to him to sign where in his whole estate is disposed of not having regard to a contract in writing made with me before marriage with him; but so it pleased god to order by his providence that although the sentence was executed on my dear husband yet through gods great goodness to your petitioner I am yet alive; since my husbands death the said will is proved and approved by the Judge of probate and by that kind of disposal the whole estate is disposed of; and although god hath Granted my life yet those that claim my said husbands estate by that which they call a will will not suffer me to have one penny of the estate neither upon the account of my husbands contract with me before marriage nor yet upon the account of the dowry which as I humbly conceive doth belong or ought to belong to me by the law for they say that I am dead in the law and therefore my humble request and petition to this honoured General Court is that by an act of this honoured court as god hath content renewed my life and through gods goodness without fear of being put to death upon that sentence you would be pleased to put me into a capacity to make use of the law to recover that which of right by law I ought to have for my necessary suple and support that as I your petitioner am one of his majesties subjects I may have the benefit of his laws so humbly praying that god would direct your honours in all things to do that which may be most pleasing to him I subscribe
your honours humble petitioner
Elizabeth Proctor widow Read. 10 th June. 1696. in Council”
According to the court records, on April 19, 1697, the court restored Elizabeth’s legal rights and returned her dowry to her.
Not much is known about Elizabeth Proctor after this time period except that on September 22, 1699, Elizabeth married her second husband, Daniel Richards, in Lynn, Massachusetts.
In 1711, the Massachusetts legislature passed a bill restoring some of the names of the accused and awarded the Proctor family £150 in restitution for their imprisonments and John Proctor’s death.
There are no death records for Elizabeth, nor records of her youngest children, in Lynn, indicating that the family may have moved to another town. Her death date and location of her grave are unknown.

1 November, 2017, Wednesday.  Nice day... cool, sunny with some clouds and fog.  I wuz up early and painted, did exercises and selfies.  Picked up my new USB 8 channel mixer this afternoon.
.....................
Something I've learned, about myself, is that had I been born in more modern times I would have been classified as OCD and ADHD.  I've learned to control my life, over the years, but still have some OCD issues, particularly around safety, and I am constantly tapping my fingers... I'm a really good drummer after all that practice.  Something I haven't learned to control is my motormouth.  Get me talking and I'm a bit like a tsunami that keeps coming and coming and never seems to stop... kinda like a dripping tap, as it were.  I'm full of it... or something.
I'm well educated and quite smart, apparently, according to the tests, such as they are.  I was smart enough to go straight into officer school at age 18 and the Navy slapped gold rings on my arms at age 19 and I, quickly, got used to people calling me 'Sir' and saluting me.  I liked the Navy... the structure and all.  Unfortunately, I'm gay and I figured that one out while I was in the forces.  They never found out but I left on a loophole after 5 years of service.  At that time I was a Lieutenant serving in submarines.  Yup... Butch knows how to drive a submarine.  My specialties were Navigation and Sonar.  Although I served as a Torpedo Officer, I had technical help and was not trained in weapons... my job was to be in charge and make sure things were working.  I knew how to drive and dive a submarine.  I was already trained in driving surface ships and served a year as the navigator of a repair ship, at age 22.
I hate bullies and pranks... why I don't like shows like Ellen... she is a bully who enjoys seeing others being embarrassed.  If you think immature, childish idiot things like pranks and bullying are OK, stay away from me... far away, forever.  If you decide playing a prank on me is fun, I will disown you forever and I may become extremely violent.  Assholes deserve no mercy.  Perhaps a bloody nose will help you grow up.  Don't fuck with me... I fight dirty and have no mercy for scumbags.  I try, hard, to be nice to people and expect the same.  Really, pranks are for bullies, assholes and immature idiot morons.  Fuck with me and you will awaken a nightmare. ............................................. Now I'm old... 73.  Things have changed a lot since I was young.  I was seven years old before we had a TV... the first people on our block to have one.  We had two channels in black and white that went off the air at night.
I grew up in a 99% white neighbourhood (Hamilton, Ontario... 1944-1963).  Women wore stockings and white gloves in public lest they be seen a whores.  I never heard of bullying tactics such as a wedgie, or purple nurple, until I was into my 30's.  If they existed, they didn't exist in my world.  Sesame Street wouldn't be invented until I was an adult.  I had no idea who "Waldo" nor the "Cat in the Hat" were until I was in my 50's.  I had no idea what Rock/Paper/Scissors was until I was in my 50's and still don't quite understand what that is about.  I didn't really watch any TV between 1963 and 1998.  I got my first computer in 1997.  My brother showed me a few things, I taught myself HTML.  My brother said he never saw anyone take, so fast, to a computer.  I like machines... so logical, unlike the bonehead humans.
I understand, now, that I would have been classified as OCD and ADHD, as a kid, if I were born today.  Schools were overcrowded with the Baby Boom and nobody paid any attention to mental health issues.  My OCD and ADHD are, mostly, under control.  I have great difficulty in leaving my home without multiple safety checks, I wash my hands a lot, and have a great deal of trouble keeping my mouth shut... I'm a real motor mouth and never run out of things to say.  I have a lot of trouble keeping my fingers still and am constantly tapping out drum rifts with my fingers.  Times have changed and I still don't fit in.
I'm a Sheldon Cooper type (Big Bang Theory) and taught myself how radio and TV worked when I was around 13 years old.  Electrons and Atoms are all, rather, second nature to me.  I'm not like most people.  I know how pretty much everything works and why.  I have zero interest in electronic games and role playing games.  I like being the boss and games waste precious time when I could be doing something constructive and useful.  Life is short... make good use of your time.  I spend a lot of time in deep thought, which I consider to be a useful way to spend time... why I think about things like Relativity and the Speed of Light... which I believe is caused by the physical size of a particle called the Electron.
I have no idea how to influence your life to make it better, but I try.  I encourage you to learn new things, all the time.  I encourage anyone with a religion to do some studying of their religious text and history... that should turn you into an atheist pretty quickly.  Most people haven't a clue about the history of their religion and religious texts. -------------------------- Life is short.  When you arrive you don't get to stay.  Nothing stays put.  The past is gone... get over it.  Be prepared and ask yourself where you want to be every 5-10 years.  The world is pretty fucked up these days and I figure the near future is going to be pretty horrific for most.  Not sure how to help you there but keep emergency supplies on hand always, and learn how to purify water.  That may be handy.  Good luck, you're going to need it.  I'm 73 and won't be around.

Salem witchcraft hysteria
Tumblr media
Trials and executions of accused witches in Salem, Massachusetts, from 1692 to 1693. In all, 141 people were arrested as suspects, 19 were hanged, and one was pressed to death. The principal accusers were girls who claimed that witches in league with the Devil were attacking them and sending their Demon Familiars to attack them. Adding to the hysteria were widespread Puritan fears of Demonic influences in New England, as well as political and social tensions. Tensions were already high between Salem Village and Salem Town when the witch panic erupted, starting in the home of the Reverend Samuel Parris, who had arrived to be the fourth minister in Salem Village in 1689. Before becoming a minister, Parris had worked as a merchant in Barbados; when he returned to Massachusetts, he took back a slave couple, John and Tituba Indian (Indian was probably not the couple’s surname but really a description of their race). Tituba cared for Parris’ nine-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, called Betty, and his 11-year-old niece, Abigail Williams. Tituba probably regaled the girls with stories about her native Barbados, including magic, divination, and spell-casting.
The girls were joined by other young girls in Salem Village—Susannah Sheldon, Elizabeth Booth, Elizabeth Hubbard, Mary Warren, Sarah Churchill, Mercy Lewis, and Ann Putnam, Jr. (Ann Putnam, Sr., was her mother). Dabbling in the occult was fun in the beginning, but it soon frightened them to the point of having fits. In January 1692, Betty Parris and others began having fits, crawling into holes, making strange noises, and contorting their bodies. It is impossible to know whether the girls feigned witchcraft to hide their involvement in Tituba’s magic, or whether they believed they were possessed. In the climate of the times, they were declared by experts to be bewitched.
Seventeenth-century Puritans believed in witchcraft as a cause of illness and death and thought that witches derived their power from the Devil. So, the next step was to find the witch or witches responsible, exterminate them, and cure the girls. After much prayer and exhortation, the frightened girls, unable or unwilling to admit their own complicity, began to name names. Tituba made a witch cake out of rye meal mixed with the urine of the afflicted girls. Taken from a traditional English recipe, the cake was then fed to the dog. If the girls were bewitched, one of two things should happen: Either the dog would suffer torments, too, or he would identify the witch as her familiar. The Reverend Parris furiously accused Mary Sibley of “going to the Devil for help against the Devil,” lectured her on her sins, and publicly humiliated her in church. But the damage had been done: “The Devil hath been raised among us, and his rage is vehement and terrible,” said Parris, “and when he shall be silenced, the Lord only knows.”
The first accused, or “cried out against,” were Tituba herself, Sarah Good, and Sarah Osborne. Warrants for their arrest were issued, and all three appeared before Salem Town magistrates John Hathorne and Jonathan Corwin on March 1. The girls, present at all interrogations, fell into fits and convulsions as each woman stood up for questioning, claiming that the woman’s specter was roaming the room, biting them, pinching them, and often appearing as a bird or other animal someplace in the room, usually on a particular beam of the ceiling. Hathorne and Corwin angrily demanded why the women were tormenting the girls, but both Sarahs denied any wrongdoing. Tituba, however, beaten since the witch cake episode by Parris and afraid to reveal the winter story sessions and conjurings, confessed to being a witch. She said that a black dog—a favoured form of the Devil—had threatened her and ordered her to hurt the girls, and that two large cats, one black and one red, had made her serve them. She claimed that she had ridden through the air on a pole to “witch meetings” (see Sabbat) with Good and Osborne, accompanied by the other women’s familiars: a yellow bird for Good, a winged creature with a woman’s head, and another hairy one with a long nose for Osborne. Tituba cried that Good and Osborne had forced her to attack Ann Putnam, Jr., with a knife just the night before, and Ann corroborated her statement by claiming that the witches had menaced her with a knife and tried to cut off her head.
Tituba revealed that there was a coven of witches in Massachusetts, about six in number, led by a tall, white haired man dressed all in black, and that she had seen him. During the next day’s questioning, Tituba claimed that the tall man had approached her many times, forcing her to sign his devil’s book in Blood, and that she had seen nine names already there. All three women were taken to prison in Boston, where Good and Osborne were locked in heavy iron chains to prevent their specters from travelling about and tormenting the girls. Osborne, already frail, died there. Tituba joined the ranks of the accusers.
Complicating the legal process of arrest and trial was the loss of Massachusetts Bay’s colonial charter. The colony was established as a Puritan colony in 1629 with self rule, the English courts revoked the charter in 1684–85, restricting the colony’s independence. Massachusetts Bay had had no authority to try capital cases, and for the first six months of the witch hunt, suspects merely languished in prison, usually in irons.
The loss of Massachusetts’ charter represented to the Puritans a punishment from God: The colony had been established in covenant with God, and prayer and fasting and good lives would keep up Massachusetts’ end of the covenant and protect the colony from harm. Increasingly, the petty transgressions and factionalism of the colonists were viewed as sins against the covenant, and an outbreak of witchcraft seemed the ultimate retribution for the colony’s evil ways. Published sermons by Cotton Mather and his father, Increase Mather, and the long-winded railings against witchcraft from the Reverend Parris’ pulpit every Sunday convinced the villagers that evil walked among them and must be rooted out at all cost. In May 1692, the new royal governor, Sir William Phips, established a Court of Oyer and Terminer (“to hear and determine”) to try the witches. By May’s end, approximately 100 people sat in prison on the basis of the girls’ accusations. Bridget Bishop was first to be found guilty and was hanged on June 10.
The court had to deal with the issue of spectral evidence. The problem was not whether the girls saw the specters, but whether a righteous God could allow the Devil to afflict the girls in the shape of an innocent person. If the Devil could not assume an innocent’s shape, the spectral evidence was invaluable against the accused. If he could, how else were the magistrates to tell who was guilty? The court asked for clerical opinions, and on June 15 the ministers, led by Increase and Cotton Mather, cautioned the judges against placing too much emphasis on spectral evidence alone. Other tests, such as “falling at the sight,” in which victims collapse at a look from the witch, or the touch test, in which victims are relieved of their torments by touching the witch, were considered more reliable. Nevertheless, the ministers pushed for vigorous prosecution, and the court ruled in favour of allowing spectral evidence.
Of the executions, that of George Burroughs, formerly minister of Salem Village, stood out. Burroughs and several others were sent to be hanged at Gallows Hill on August 19. Before Burroughs died, he shocked the crowd by reciting the Lord’s Prayer perfectly, creating an uproar. Demands for Burroughs’ freedom were countered by the afflicted girls, who cried out that “the Black Man” had prompted Burroughs through his recital of the prayer. It was generally believed that even the Devil could not recite the Lord’s Prayer, and the crowd’s mood grew darker. A riot was thwarted by Cotton Mather, who told the crowd that Burroughs was not an ordained minister, and the Devil was known to change himself often into an angel of light if there were profit in doing so. When the crowd was calmed, Mather urged that the executions proceed, and they did. As before, the bodies were dumped into the shallow grave, leaving Burroughs’ hand and chin exposed.
Samuel Wardwell, completely intimidated, confessed to signing the Devil’s book for a black man who promised him riches. He later retracted his confession, but the court believed his earlier testimony. Wardwell choked on smoke from the hangman’s pipe during his execution, and the hysterical girls claimed it was the Devil preventing him from finally confessing.
Giles Corey, a wealthy landowner, was pressed to death September 19 for refusing to acknowledge the court’s right to try him. He was taken to a Salem field, staked to the ground, and covered with a large wooden plank. Stones were piled on the plank one at a time, until the weight was so great his tongue was forced out of his mouth. Sheriff George Corwin used his cane to poke it back into Corey’s mouth. Corey’s only response to the questions put to him was to ask for more weight. More stones were piled atop him, until finally he was crushed lifeless. Ann Putnam, Jr., saw his execution as divine justice, for she claimed that when Corey had signed on with the Devil, he had been promised never to die by hanging.
The hysteria subsided when the girls began accusing more and more prominent people, including the wife of the governor, Lady Phips. On October 29, Governor Phips dissolved the Court of Oyer and Terminer, and spectral evidence became inadmissible. The trials came to an end.
Eventually, the prosecutions were seen as one more trial of God’s covenant with New England—a terrible sin to be expiated. Those who had participated in the proceedings— Cotton and Increase Mather, the other clergy, the magistrates, even the accusers—suffered illness and personal setbacks in the years after the hysteria. Samuel Parris was forced to leave his ministry in Salem. By 1703, the Massachusetts colonial legislature began granting retroactive amnesties to the convicted and executed. Even more amazing, they authorised financial restitution to the victims and their families. In 1711, Massachusetts Bay became one of the first governments ever voluntarily to compensate persons victimised by its own mistakes.
In 1693, Increase Mather acknowledged in his Cases of Conscience Concerning Evil Spirits Personating Men that finding a witch was probably impossible, because the determination rested on the assumption that God had set humanly recognisable limits on Satan, but Satan and God are beyond human comprehension.
In 1957, the legislature of Massachusetts passed a resolution exonerating some of the victims. Still, citizens felt they should do more. In 1992, a memorial was erected to all the victims of the 1692 trial. It was dedicated by Elie Weisel, a Nobel laureate known for his work concerning the victims of Nazi concentration camps. The memorial is located at the Old Burying Point in Salem and is a parklike square with stone benches engraved with the names of the victims.
