Young people having political engagement on social media during recent years
Political engagement can be defined as the participation of people in choosing and sanctioning the rulers that hold power within the government. Political engagement includes activities such as citizens voting their leaders, political candidates fighting for leadership position in government, politician receiving pressure from organized groups, public protests and etc (Stuti, 2016).
Contrary to popular belief that young people have low political engagement in real life and even on social media when compared to older adults. Experts expected that younger people belong to the “Distracted” group of people where they are easily distracted from processing political content because of high saturation of entertainment content (Matthes, 2022). But younger users of social media are more prone to post their opinions relating to the political issues and they post content that encourage other internet users to take political action. Other statistical findings include:
34% of social media users do repost political materials and issues that were previously posted by someone else
More than 30% use social media to encourage people to vote and use social media tools to create posts that encourage online users to participate in political or social issues where the poster think is important (Rainie, 2012)
Young people mostly consume political content through social media such as 70% of young people get information regards to 2020 USA election on social media (Booth, 2020)
The rise in young people paying more attention and even participate in political engagement is partly because of Covid-19 pandemic. As the pandemic occurred most countries prohibit citizens from freely going outdoors and practicing social distance is mandatory. This leads to young people to spend most of their time on social media. Moreover, political activities also moved online so the exposure political content to young people increases (Booth, 2020). An example of political engagement between young people and the leaders from government is one simple twitter vote with the question of ‘should we make Daylight Saving permanent’ posted by Ed Markey, United States Senator. After Markey posted that, people engage it by voting their opinion in regards to the question (O’Donnell, 2022).
Sidenote, a study conducted on students in Turkey discovered that Facebook is the widely used social media for young people to get political news and participate in political participation. Young people’s perception about Facebook’s political effectiveness are 1) an effective tool for arranging virtual political activites, 2) virtual activities that attract politician’s attention, 3) a media that can effectively inform people about political development and news (Kamiloglu et al., 2014).

Exactly one year before the T20 World Cup in Australia next year, fourteen teams will battle it out in 51 games in the Qualifier tournament. The T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019, that begins on the 18th of October 2019, will be played till 2nd November 2019. It adopts a round-robin format (where teams will be divided into groups of seven each) which will be followed by the playoffs. Out of these fourteen teams, six will qualify to the next stage.
They will then meet Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the first round of the World Cup. These eight sides will further be divided into two groups of four each. The best teams will then advance to the Super 12s stage of the T20 World Cup 2020. All the matches of this tournament will be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Being the hosts, the UAE has qualified directly for this T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament. With Zimbabwe currently serving a ban, Nigeria has replaced them in the tournament.
