Replaying Awakening Fade Mission and noticed something. Did you know the Baroness straight up fights Justice with... her fists? Turned around during the First fight to catch Baroness throwing hands. Literally.
Like, obvious answer is probably devs forgot to give her a weapon or spells so she defaulted to just raw punching. BUT. What if. She's fighting bare-handed because that's what she's used to?? Pride demon briefly forgot they're a toothpick arm mage and don't have big massive claws rn but still ends up fist fighting on instinct. Would have been 10x more hilarious if Justice too, was just having fisticuffs brawl.

So is your Hawke aware Anders knew her cousin?
Yep?
Mostly because in canon, Leandra outright tells us that an Amell Warden is their relative. And Anders does mention he served under that same warden. I also kinda remember there's another moment in MotA DLC where Hawke mentions being related to an Amell warden.
But yeah, canon doesn't seem to highlight it much (understandably since it's just one of multiple possible wardens storylines).
But fanfic wise? Omg I have SO MANY ideas playing with the "Amell and Hawke are cousins" scenario!
Anders 100% had a "Oh Maker, there's TWO of them" hot panic moment.
One idea touches on DA2 Legacy DLC storyline: wherein Marzel Amell, upon taking over as Warden Commander, learns that one of the many secret tasks of the Fereldan wardens was to always have a grey warden guarding Malcolm Hawke's bloodline. After a series of shenanigans, Amell discovers Malcolm is dead (oh no!), the remaining Hawke family fled across the sea to Kirkwall (oh no! x2) and that he might actually be related to them (oh... what..??). He then sends Anders (and Justice) to make contact with the Hawke children and 'do whatever it takes' to stay close to and protect them.
Thus, Anders goes to Kirkwall, makes up a story about leaving the wardens and joins Hawke's little friend group. Also, he very quickly realizes the Hawke children are not... children. They are grown-ass adults. And the eldest is Very Attractive. Oh no!
Most of the story is Anders (and Justice) attempting to just survive Kirkwall, while secretly working with the Mage Underground which is actually a cover for his Actual Secret Grey Warden Mission of secretly protecting Hawke. That mini-quest where Nathaniel just randomly 'got lost' in the Deep Roads only to be found standing literally at the entrance? Yeah, a blatant cover to check in on Anders and possibly swap out if need be.
Of course the whole truth comes out during the Legacy DLC.

Sometimes I think about how insane it was that they made the Hero of Fereldan the Warden-Commander.
Not questioning their combat prowess and military might -- but their specific knowledge on what it even means to BE a Grey Warden.
Because, if DA timelines are to be believed, HoF ended the Blight in a year. Which means, HoF had only been a Grey Warden for (at most)... a year. Which means. They made. Someone. With barely a year's worth of experience of even BEING a Grey Warden, the Warden-Commander. And most of that experience was alongside an equally inexperience junior warden! I mean, our Warden was SO badly uninformed about Grey Warden lore that Bioware had to literally spawn in random Riordan the Exposition NPC just to progress the plot (and then immediately kill him off because Bioware was determined to make our utter noob ass (affectionate) the Warden-Commander). HoF is so hilariously under-qualified it's like forcibly promoting the intern to middle management to train the new interns.
I just see Marzel absolutely panicking in his new, sudden (unwanted?) role as Warden-Commander. Poor guy is standing in front of Oghren, Anders and Mhairi with Joining Cup clutched in hand, sweating and mumbling though the Joining speech because my magic boi only heard it spoken THAT ONE TIME and now he has to recite the entire thing? In front of an audience?? Was he supposed to have been taking notes!? No one told him he was going to be quizzed on this a year later!!
I'm gonna headcanon that this leads to absolute insanity at Vigil's Keep. One year of relevant work experience Marzel is left in charge. Unsupervised chaos.

Whelp I've done it. Just finished Witch Hunt which now marks the end of my Dragon: Age Origins run. 10/10 would recommend. Especially Awakening and Witch Hunt DLC.
And y'know what? Witch Hunt was worth it for this moment. A fitting end for my Warden. Reunited with his love (and baby mama) and peaces out of work and responsibilities via magic mirror. Just look at that face. I think this is honestly the first time I've seen my Warden-Commander smile in a LONG time. Poor guy.
Minor DA2 rant below cut;
Actually I finished it awhile ago but had been procrastinating by replaying Awakening.
Because uggghhhhhh... I don't want to play DA2.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure I'll grow to love Hawke again but right now my mood is just... meh. Replaying Origins and all its DLCs just made the differences in quality and content between the two all the more jarring. Aaaand on a more personal level -- I don't want to stop being a Grey Warden. ಥ_ಥ
For the last near 150 hours, I was sold on being a Grey Warden. In fact, I think my best fun was Awakening where I actually got to BE a Grey Warden doing Grey Warden things WITH OTHER GREY WARDENS. We ALL drank the nasty juice! It was a bonding experience! This game spent so much time building up the lore and excitement of being a Grey Warden -- leaving so many unanswered questions about the Taint, the Blight, what it all means, dO wE GET griFFONs -- only to just... drop it all in DA2.
I'm just so confused by the direction DA2 went. Replaying Origins with the knowledge of the upcoming mage/templar plot in DA2, the conflict in Origins felt... minor. Sure we get hints here and there that things are Kinda Bad. But nothing major. Heck, I played a Circle Mage as my Origin and I never felt that 'Oh wow, mage rebellion should totally be Main Focus of the next game!' Like don't get me wrong, mage/templar conflict is 😌👌but the Darkspawn and Grey Wardens was what set Dragon Age apart from other fantasy.
"Well the Blight's over Carrinth, there's no more story to tell about Grey Wardens" you say. And yet, Awakening did a fantastic job of making an entire campaign post-Blight.
Part of me feels like if they didn't want to keep the Main Character the same (ala Mass Effect with Cmdr Shepard) then couldn't they have still made the DA2 MC a grey warden? Like a junior(?) Warden that's investigating Corypheus or whatever in Kirkwall but gets caught in the mage/templar mess. Sure we would have gotten a very different story but would that have been so bad?
In the end, I will likely end up playing DA2, if only for the excellent companions and to reunite with my Sad Mage and Angry Spirit Husbands. But at the moment... *sigh*
So goodbye Marzel Amell. You were the best Warden-Commander and I had fun throwing Storm of the Century on fools, flexing my maxed out Coercion, and painstakingly working out TACTICS. I will probably still keep stubbornly drawing Awakening fanart (because I am Not Normal about those idiots) but DA2 stuff will likely eventually bleed in. ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ

I'm sorry I just can't get over my Warden's expression when first meeting corpse Justice. He looks so traumatised (as opposed to Nat's near none-reaction). His eyes are literally 👀 Warden has SEEN things.
Also... yeah let's all just stand around awkwardly staring at the dead corpse shuffle awkwardly to his feet. Don't everyone rush to help him all at once XD ...Man I would feel so self-conscious. First, sucked into the mortal realm. Then, stuck in a dead corpse. And then! Weirdo mortals just stand around staring at me. Judgingly.
Also, bonus picture. I love any scene where Anders is in the background during Justice's dialogues hehehehe :3

I was warned that DA:A was buggy and could possibly miss out recruitment/quest completion but my god, I didn't realize it would be a whole laundry list >_>. After some readings and MUCH internal debating, I decided to play at the recommended order. Which makes Justice the last quest :(( Noooo! Now I'm Sad. Wait for me Second Spirit Husband! 😫

Wow Anders is REALLY different from his DA2 counterpart. I think I understand more why people were so upset. :o It's not just the voice, it's how he talks too. ...Why am I getting serious Alistair vibes from you.

Idk but I feel like I like the gameplay of Awakening better? I think since we're all Grey Warden, there's this weird feeling of camaraderie? Like doing Warden things with your Warden bros. Whereas in Origins, it was more people along for the ride temporarily rather than part of your team. Does that make sense??
Could also be because Marzel now has Phenomenal Cosmic Powers and can control the battlefield better resulting in less dying lol. Let's go Storm of the Century baby~!

WHEW. With Origins done, I can finally start playing Awakening. Ahhhh so excited! 🤗 This is, strangely enough, actually my first playthrough of Awakening as I didn't have the DLCs previously and just went straight to DA2.
But NOW I can! And I'll finally meet this 'Anders That Came Before' that everyone talks about and also original flavour Corpse Justice lmao. Man I hope this doesn't awaken(ing) anything inside me. Like my long dormant DA obsessions hahahhaa........... 😅😅😅😅 >_> <_<

Sooooooo ok I ended up binge playing DA:O for the last two weeks. And it might as well have been a blind playthrough because I forgot almost everything ^_^;; Below are Carrinth's Random Observations or Things That Have Happened to Marzel (Redux):
DA armor is still ugly as sin. I'm sorry. Robes 4 lyfe.
Man I tell you, a single Heal spell makes ALL the difference. Especially early on when you don't have money or potions or skillz. Dying less apparently makes game moar fun! SHOCKING.
I have recruited Sten.
I have also recruited Shale for the first time. I love Shale. Shale is best rock. Squish me. (Not really pls don't Shale) DLC ftw!
Sten really, really, REALLY likes my warden this time wtf. His affection is the HIGHEST of everyone, second only to dog. I have no idea how that happened. O_O I just RP-ed Marzel as being very indifferent to Sten. "I'm not here to impress you, bruh." Sten is a tsundere confirmed.
I did the FADE quest. Again. I told myself it wasn't as bad this round and that I'm fine but obviously I'm not fine but you just have to hold it in and my bags are full of junk and I need to sell them bcos I needs the money but I can't leave pls pls let me out LET ME OUT!2111
Wynne talking about what makes an abomination made me have Anders/Justice feels. "If one retains one's humanity, one is not an abomination." 😥
Still bff with Jowan. We bros for life. Alistair didn't like that.
"Teagan! Who iZ dis mAN?" Idk but the second round I really enjoyed her voice-acting. She's a distraught mother close to hysterics. It's amazingly hilarious and compelling! <3
Wait. Wait. I totally forgot about Connor. So wait. We CAN CURE demonic possession??? I thought it was permanent?! No way of saving but death via a pokey sword yadda yadda?? Omg is this one of those 'we could cure you but it's too expensive and you can't afford it' scenarios? IT IS. Poor farmer's kid can't afford a pile of lyrium but if you're the son of an arl? No problem! Whole Circle bending over just to help you. Wow. Goddamn. Chantry/Circle seriously just kill mages because it's the cheaper alternative! >:O
MMmmmm. People say I should save Orzammar for last because it is harder. But. Oghren. But. Difficult. But OGHREN. But BROODMOTHER. DO YOU NOT REMEMBER THE SUFFERING OF DEEP ROADS?! .......... OGHREN. Marzel and friends died a lot. Mostly because I stubbornly wanted my party to consist of Oghren and Shale. That's like, two warriors ugh. We got by. Shale extra conversations were worth it ;)
Got Flemeth's grimoire for Morrigan. Formed a team made only of dude-bros to help Marzel get laid. Which meant they had to make do without any healing or bard song. I named them... the Snu Snu Squad (affectionate). Zevran died almost immediately. (Note: Dragon bum be dangerous position) Marzel stupidly killed his own self with blood magic while throwing his single Heal spell >_> MVP goes to Alistair for keeping alive long enough to whittle away Flemeth's health and died just exact moment Sten landed a killing blow. Grimoire was given and snu snu was had!
Marzel is in weird love triangle where all romancable persons love him. This cannot end well.
Why are there so many Desire demons? Holy crap, with the DLCs I have encountered no less than 4. Were there always this many?? Are Fereldans so horny?
People who challenge MAGES to duels deserve to die... from stupidity. I don't make the rules. You sir, have a pointy stick. Marzel can conjure blizzards and crushing barriers with his fingertips. We are not the same.
MANA CLASH IS OP.
Ok I just read codex that those Wild Sylvan trees are possessed by Rage demons?? Omg. They are Angry Trees. Low-key wanna see Justice fight Angry Trees while yelling about demons.
Haha I missed this game. Now onward to Sacred Ashes and moar stuff I can't remember!

Ok the story told of Kal'hirol is really sad :( Those 200 really should have been honored somehow. Why didn't that act elevate the castleless to prove they could go beyond what they were born into? Sigh. There's so much uptapped lore in DA. I wish there was just one quest where it was about taking back a Thaig permanently or something. Dwarven lore needs moar love.
Y'know what. Being irrevocably traumatised by mind-bleaching body horror? Just Deep Roads things. Yeah, bring on that grubby Children or whatever. Let me have more nightmare fuel thanks.

I’m doing it!
I recreated best Circle teacher Marzel Amell! He who hates pants. And mage hats.
Sadly had to create poor Marzel from memory because the game doesn’t have a character appearance import function. But Marzel is all big nose and long chin. That I remember!
...
Um. Um. What was my skill tree before....???
... I can’t remember what spells he used. He was a frost mage! ... And. Uh. O-Other things? Pfft! I can do this! I finished DA:O before! I can do it again! How hard can it be????
Tho, it’s a trip playing as Marzel again. I remember when I first did his playthough. At that time I didn’t even have a proper name for him! He was just supposed to be my mage run. But I ended up liking him so much he basically became my “canon” warden.
And now I’ve had years building and writing Marzel, so much so that instead of thinking “how should I respond” I’m actually thinking “how would Marzel respond”. And it’s awesome! I have no idea how all my companion relationships will be since Marzel is low-key snaky. At least Dog (Barkfire) loves him.

The Actual Corpse Justice
*definitely spoilers*
The following is an incredibly rare excerpt from what remains of the last diary of Warden-Commander Marzel Amell. Preserved in starch.

... got an angry elf lady. Reminds me of Morrigan. I miss her so much I cry myself to sleep. Not as much as I miss my dog of course but like, loads more than say Alistair.
The stress is totally getting to me. I need something harder than elfroot but Oghren drank everything. Anyway, Varel is sending me somewhere called Blackmush or whatever. Maybe I can find someone to hook me up y'know? Hint hint.

The diary goes on to meander for 10 pages...

Holy Maker you guys. I found a guy. He's quite dead. Did he find some Good Stuff maybe? Anyways, I am Looking Respectfully. 👀
"No. No you aren't," the bushes say.
"Holy Maker!" I say back.
"Darkspawn!" Nathaniel says.
"Don't be silly," I tell him. "Twas but the bushes."
"Bushes don't talk, Commander,"
I roll my eyes at him. He hasn't SEEN the things I've seen. And I have SEEN THINGS.
The bushes suddenly grow darkspawn. Like fruits. Yikes!
"I am the First," Some Guy says. I glare. Because I'm on to him. He's calling first dibs. Well this is MY corpse dammit! Imma fight you for it!
Some Guy gives us the Heebie Jeebies. He starts talking about his mom and it's super awkward and we all cringe.
Kids, don't take free gifts from strangers. Especially if it's green.
Some Asshole Guy has ditched us in the Fade. NO. Maker NO not another Fade trip! I swear if I have to turn into a mouse again...
Wait. We found something. Someone?

Interesting guy. I wonder if I can set him up with my cousin, Hawke. I mean he has no physical body but still... Anyway, Bro is leading some kind of party crashers into some lady's house? I think there will be booze? I really need a drink. I help Glowy Man. For the free booze.

"Who are you talking to?" Nathaniel interrupts. I ignore him because I have no witty comeback and my pride is easily bruised.
Corpse Justice asked us to help with Baroness Lady. I hope there's booze.

There was no booze. I think she drank some Bad Stuff and is now experiencing explosive diarrhea. This is why we boil our water before drinking it, kids.
One of the first (and only) lessons I taught in the Circle was to say "No" to demonic possessions. Kids, this is your brain when possessed.
Demon was slain and there was some rejoicing. I pumped my fist but everyone just looked at me, tired. I lowered my arm awkwardly. Corpse Justice guy decided to join us because obviously we are the most amazing people he will ever meet. Team is finally complete. Group photo time!
P.S. CJ said I "seem to be a creature of good character" and honestly it's the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me.
P.S.S. We are BFF now.
