“Arte sem o humano, apenas será indústria, tal como cinema sem arte será apenas técnica”1.

O estudo do cinema de autor e a participação ativa na sua divulgação e compreensão é campo experimental que permite a Mário Bonito ensaiar conceitos e interpretações que constituem os alicerces da sua arquitetura, como expressão cultural e forma de arte, consolidando o seu entendimento sobre a importância do processo criativo e do papel da arte na sua dimensão social e expressão de forma culta e universal na personificação do progresso, como fator de transformação.

Em 1956, por ocasião da exibição de “La Pueblerina: um filho que não pedi” (1949), de Emilio Fernández, no Cineclube de Espinho, Mário Bonito escreve uma palestra que é reprovada pela comissão de censura.

A abordagem ao cinema de Emílio Fernandez possibilita a Mário Bonito apresentar e desenvolver temas interditos que condicionam a evolução da própria sociedade portuguesa, recorrendo a uma citação dos arquitetos P. L. Weiner e J. L. Sert  para expressar a veracidade dos registos e correspondente ética artística do realizador mexicano: “o cinema não foi senão um meio de exteriorizar os mais prementes problemas de uma maioria desfavorecida e miserável, «ainda enraizada na velha cultura sobrevivente às leis rígidas da era colonial e às repressões periódicas»”2.

Associando-se à celebração dos 100 anos de Mário Bonito, a 1 de outubro, a Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema recebe, às 18h00, mesa-redonda sobre as várias facetas do trabalho de Mário Bonito e projeta, às 19:30, o filme “La Pueblerina: um filho que não pedi”.

Na mesa-redonda estarão reunidos os amigos de Mário Bonito: Luís Miguel Cintra e Jorge de Silva Melo, fundadores do Teatro da Cornucópia (1973), e Rui Mendes, ator, encenador e antigo estudante de arquitetura colaborador de Mário Bonito. Com eles estarão, também, Mário Gabriel Bonito e Mário Sérgio Bonito.

Durante a sessão será dada a conhecer a palestra censurada de Mário Bonito.

Illusion Magic

This magic is very strong, but volatile, and Rodrigo understands very little of it

He normally uses this to create a mirror image of himself, or to disorient opponents when fighting—the mirror image is really just an afterimage, if he wanted it to move and fight with him, he could, but that takes more energy than he wants to use for just a quick diversion

He can also cast glamors over his appearance, allowing him to sneak into underground bars and similarly shady places unseen/unnoticed—helpful especially when your face is on more than a few wanted posters in such shady places

Will cast illusions over others, especially during raids to confuse the ship their raiding by making them think there are more pirates than there are, or tricking them into jumping off their own ship

He can create illusions for others too, for example, create a mirror image of Jacqui during a fight, though it takes more concentration and he can’t maintain it for as long

It’s easier for him to cast massive illusions over non-humans, like the sirens in the Strait of Sirens, and he can make better use of his range that way, but it still isn’t something he can maintain for more than a few minutes at the most

Most of his illusions rely on people being able to see, so they don’t work over blind people or in the dark of night

Forcefields

This magic was inherited from his Mamá Elena, and it is what was most exploited during his time in the catacombs

Pretty straight-forward, he can create forcefield/barriers around himself and others to protect them

The bigger the forcefield the weaker it is, but he can create one big enough to protect the entire ship if he wanted to

The forcefields protect against almost all types of physical and magical attacks, and when Rodrigo was younger it was even stronger, which is why it was essentially “harvested” from him

It is still used by the Scholars to keep some magic users trapped in the catacombs, and there are runes carved into Syd’s ship, Inuwashi, that are laced with Rodrigo’s magic

Other Skills: whittling, can speak his native language Nopali, Vesuvian/Common, and some Vesuvian Sign language (but he can only read/write very basic Nopali), dancing (specifically samba but other types as well), stealth (when he wants to be)

Background

Arcana Universe

Born in the village Girasol, just outside of Nopal and the Emerald Sea, Rodrigo lived with his mothers until he was 10 years old. His Mamá, Elena, was the village’s leader, and as such, he was often treated like the village’s golden child, their hope for the next generation. And for a time he was, following closely in his mothers’ footsteps as he grew up.

But when he was 10, his village was attacked, and Elena was killed by Captain Syd, who had been sent to kill her and capture Rodrigo to bring to the Sea Palace. Once Elena died, the barrier that she put over the village disappeared, and Rodrigo was captured.

For six years he was kept in the catacombs of the Palace, being tortured and experimented on, his magic harvested from him until Jacqui stumbled upon him and the two of them escaped together. They ran from Syd and the Palace for two years before Rodrigo won his ship, El Corazon Sangrante, in a bet, and became a pirate captain, with Jacqui as his quartermaster.

While this allowed them to evade Syd, it did not protect them from him until two more years later, when Rodrigo was 20, and he went to the Quinquennial Pirate Meeting. He joined himself and his crew under the Pirate Queen, meaning that Syd could no longer go after them, as he was sworn under the same Code. 

A few years later, when Rodrigo was 28, he and his crew came across Keean stuck in the Strait of Sirens, and rescued him. While Rodrigo does not raise Keean in the same way Jacqui does, he still cares for the boy and considers him almost as his protege.

During the events of the game, Rodrigo and the rest of the crew of El Corazon are patrolling the Sea of Persephia, and largely do not feature in any of the game routes.

Modern AU

Rodrigo spent most of his life in Hollywood, Florida with his mothers, but he dreamed about moving away for almost all of that time. After meeting Jacqui in high school, the two of them became extremely close, and ended up moving across the country to LA, California after they both graduated. 

He jumped around working multiple jobs at bars and clubs until he finally decided he wanted to start a band with Jacqui and a few of the friends they had made in the area. Their band ended up opening for the Desert Jackals, and they even toured together for a while. Rodrigo and Leon had a brief, messy, and complicated relationship that ended due to Rodrigo’s own fault, but his band stayed together and they still perform locally in LA.

You answered a couple days ago about your pet peeves for Portugal and I was curious...what’s your full headcanon name for him? Love ur work btw pls keep drawing port it gives me life 😩

I definitely will anon! Been working on some Hades fanart lately but more Ports shall come.

To be honest I haven’t actually thought about a full name for him? Plus our names can be so damn long. I usually just go for first and last name. This also makes me wonder about just how important human names are for beings like them you know?

I’ve used several first names for him. The most common one being Gabriel because it’s the direct equivalent to the arabic Jibril, the name I headcanon he had under Umayyad. Plus it’s a name that is somewhat common but not too common here? I’d say it’s more or less in the middle when it comes to popularity. 

I’ve also used João (this one being THE portuguese male name. I know like 50 Joãos is2g) and even Luís. I just really like Luís for some reason. A lot of people use Afonso because of Afonso Henriques but I like Luís for Luís de Camões. ;;;

As for last name? It’s all over the place. Sometimes it’s Silva (very common too) sometimes it’s Santos or dos Santos, sometimes dos Anjos (because Gabriel akhsdgdf) BUT because I like Port and Spain as siblings, I will definitely use Fernandes because it’s the portuguese equivalent to Fernandez.

If only one thing has brought me joy in the last few weeks, it began when the matriarchs at Unist’ot’en burned the Canadian flag and declared reconciliation is dead. Like wildfire, it swept through the hearts of youth across the territories. Reconciliation was a distraction, a way for them to dangle a carrot in front of us and trick us into behaving. Do we not have a right to the land stolen from our ancestors? It’s time to shut everything the fuck down!

Tawinikay (aka Southern Wind Woman)

The toxic cargo carried in Canadian pipelines, whether it be tar sands oil or fracked liquid natural gas (LNG), is, according to all serious climate scientists, a major, perhaps even decisive contribution to global warming, i.e. ecological catastrophe.   Meant to fuel industrial expansion, the pipelines have themselves become fuel for revolt. Designed to move these dirty fossil fuels from one location to another, they are a crucial element in normalizing the dubious paradise of unlimited growth in awe of which all obedient consumer/citizens are supposed to genuflect. In what the colonial mapmakers have called British Columbia (BC), resource extraction has always been the name of the game. However, the emergence in February of this year of a widespread oppositional network ranging from “land back” Indigenous warriors to elder traditionalists and from Extinction Rebellion activists to anarchist insurrectionaries was heartening. Railways, highways and ferries were blockaded, provincial legislatures, government administrative offices, banks and corporate headquarters were occupied. The catalyst for this rebellion was a widespread Indigenous uprising that refused the illusory promises of reconciliation. Together, these rebel forces disrupted business as usual in solidarity with the Unist’ot’en Big Frog clan of the Wet’suwet’en tribal house.

       ​As objective chance would have it, the primary Indigenous land defense camp is situated not far from the same Hazelton, B.C. area to which surrealist Kurt Seligmann and his wife Arlette had journeyed in 1938. During that time, they visited Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en villages, marveled at the imaginative power of the totem poles and ceremonial objects, made field notes, shot 16mm film, collected stories and recorded mythic histories. Now, in 2020, growing numbers of these same Indigenous peoples have been threatening to bring the Canadian economy to a grinding halt. Unwilling to be bought off by corporate petrodollars or mollified by a legal system that has never done anything but pacify, brutalize, or betray them in the process of stealing their land, Indigenous peoples passionately fought back against the forces of colonial law and order in a radical whirlwind of willful disobedience and social disruption. One action built upon another in creating a rolling momentum that seemed unstoppable. When one railroad blockade would be busted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), another would spring up in its place elsewhere extending the frontlines of the battle all across the continent. Then the debilitating Covid-19 virus arrived to compound the damage that had previously been done to the capitalist economy by the incendiary virus of revolt. The resistance of these Indigenous communities against the pipelines concerns all of us, worldwide, since they are on the front lines of the struggle to prevent cataclysmic climate change.

       ​In the future, a key question will be whether Canadian authorities can successfully put the genie of Indigenous rebellion back in the colonial bottle of “reconciliation”. As surrealists, we hope they will not, and we stand in solidarity with the unreconciled insurgent spirit of defiant Indigenous resistance. A new reality is to be invented and lived instead of the one that today as yesterday imposes its environmental miserabilism and its colonialist and racist hierarchies.  As surrealists, we honor our historical affinity with the Kwakwaka’wakw Peace Dance headdress that for so long had occupied a place of reverence in André Breton’s study during his lifetime before being ceremoniously returned in 2003 to Alert Bay on Cormorant Island by his daughter, Aube Elléouet, in keeping with her father’s wishes. With this former correspondence in mind, we presently assert that our ongoing desire to manifest the emancipation of the human community as distinctively undertaken in the surrealist domain of intervention is in perfect harmony with the fight of the Indigenous communities of the Americas against globalized Western Civilisation and its ecocidal folly.

Pouco dinheiro e muita coisa pra resolver: os cinco desafios de Eduardo Freeland no Botafogo

Novo diretor de futebol tem carta branca da diretoria para trabalhar e terá que definir futuro de Eduardo Barroca e Tulio Lustosa, além de reformular o elenco com pouco dinheiro em caixa Eduardo Freeland terá trabalho como diretor de futebol do Botafogo. Na primeira experiência de gestão com a parte profissional, após uma carreira vitoriosa na base, o dirigente terá inúmeros desafios principalmente com a provável queda para a Série B. Com carta branca para atuar, o principal pedido da diretoria é que reduza o custo do departamento. O ge elencou cinco complexos problemas que o novo diretor terá que tentar resolver nos próximos meses. O mais urgente é planejar a temporada de 2021. As primeiras decisões serão referentes à permanência de Eduardo Barroca e Tulio Lustosa, seguida da formulação do elenco. Mas tudo isso tendo a frágil questão financeira como pano de fundo em busca de conquistar títulos. Técnico Permanência de Eduardo Barroca é incerta no Botafogo para a próxima temporada Vitor Silva/Botafogo O aproveitamento de 11% do treinador Eduardo Barroca está longe de agradar a torcida, que faz pressão por uma mudança no comando do time. Freeland terá que suportar as cobranças se quiser manter o técnico até mesmo o fim do Brasileirão, como garantiu o presidente Durcesio. Com tempo curto para as decisões, já que o Campeonato Carioca de 2021 começa quatro dias após o término do Brasileirão, o diretor não pode demorar muito para definir o comandante da próxima temporada. O Botafogo precisa iniciar o Estadual com um técnico fortalecido pela confiança da direção. O passado de Freeland e Barroca, que trabalharam juntos na base alvinegra, favorece a continuidade do trabalho, mas o técnico precisa convencer. Não só com resultados. O Botafogo é hoje um time sem convicção e facilmente dominado pelos adversários no campeonato nacional. Elenco Elenco do Botafogo deve passar por grande reformulação para a próxima temporada Vitor Silva/Botafogo A principal tarefa do diretor no curto prazo é a definição do elenco para a próxima temporada. Com um grupo inchado e uma folha salarial acima dos R$ 3 milhões, as mudanças serão significativas. Hoje, o elenco do Botafogo tem mais de 35 jogadores. Pelo menos metade deve sair num primeiro momento. A começar pelos sete em fim de contrato: Saulo, Helerson, Victor Luís, Guilherme Santos, Luiz Otávio, Angulo e Kelvin. Lucas Campos foi negociado há pouco tempo com o Valletta, de Malta. O contrato de Cícero prevê cláusula de renovação automática até dezembro de 2021, mas uma queda para a Série B deve selar a saída do veterano. Kanu também não ficará. O zagueiro tem proposta do Cruz Azul, do México, já aceita pelo Botafogo. Ele, inclusive, se despediu do elenco e não veste mais a camisa alvinegra. Diego Cavalieri, Gatito Fernandez e Salomon Kalou estão entre os salários mais altos do elenco. O primeiro recebeu aumento quando renovou no fim de 2020, já o paraguaio, lesionado desde setembro passado, deve ser negociado. É um interesse de ambas as partes. O contrato do atacante é até o fim deste ano, mas com cláusula que permite ao marfinense deixar o clube em fevereiro, atitude que agradaria ao Botafogo. O volante da base, Romildo, com contrato até o fim do Brasileirão, teve apenas uma participação no profissional e foi bem. A tendência é negociar para estender o vínculo. O Botafogo já conversou com o meia Éber Bessa e o liberou para procurar outros clubes. O volante Rentería também será dispensado, já que o contrato prevê cláusula de liberação ao fim do Brasileirão. O mesmo acontece com o lateral-direito Kevin: o clube pode optar pelo fim do vínculo em fevereiro. Outra pendência é Pedro Raul. O Botafogo tem que pagar 1,5 milhão de euros ao atacante em três parcelas a partir de junho de 2021 – valor combinado por 70% dos seus direitos econômicos. Sem dinheiro, o clube busca um acordo com o jogador. Outra saída é tentar a venda, já que houve propostas ao longo do último ano. Quem também tem mercado e pode gerar retorno financeiro é o volante Caio Alexandre, um dos pontos positivos do time na temporada desastrosa. O Botafogo analisa outras possibilidades de acordo, seja para liberação ou empréstimo/venda de atletas. Departamento de futebol Futuro de Tulio Lustosa também será definido por Eduardo Freeland Vitor Silva/Botafogo A estruturação do departamento de futebol é mais um desafio para Freeland. Atualmente, o diretor tem abaixo dele o gerente de futebol Tulio Lustosa. Contratado em outubro passado para a função, o ex-jogador contratou apenas três atletas, conviveu com três técnicos e ficou responsável por “apagar incêndios” nos bastidores. O trabalho de Tulio também sofre críticas por parte da torcida. Em janeiro, a homenagem feita a ele no Muro dos Ídolos de General Severiano foi apagada. A falta de experiência de Tulio Lustosa é um fator que pode pesar para o futuro no clube. Até porque um dos motivos de insatisfação com a contratação de Freeland é a falta de bagagem no futebol profissional. Dois dirigentes com pouca vivência não é o ideal para o momento do Botafogo. Dinheiro Botafogo terá dificuldades financeiras para a temporada que vem Editoria de Arte As receitas do Botafogo em 2021 são mais um agravante para o trabalho de Freeland. Com a iminente queda para a Série B, o diretor terá menos dinheiro para montar um time competitivo e levar o Botafogo de volta a um lugar de destaque na primeira divisão nacional. Em entrevista ao ge, Durcesio Mello estimou perda de R$ 100 milhões em receitas caso o rebaixamento se concretize. O presidente já pensa o planejamento contando com o rombo e esperava a chegada do diretor de futebol para ajudar a pensar nas soluções. Títulos Último título do Botafogo foi em 2018, quando tinha Carli, Igor Rabello e Jefferson no elenco André Durão/GloboEsporte.com Campeão carioca pela última vez em 2018, o Botafogo deve ter um caminho árduo para a conquista de títulos em 2021. Com menos dinheiro para montar um elenco forte, caso a queda para a Série B se concretize, o trabalho de Freeland será difícil a curto prazo. A torcida sente falta de um título de expressão já que o último foi o Campeonato Brasileiro de 1995. Desde então, foram cinco Estaduais e um vice da Copa do Brasil. A tendência é que o trabalho de Freeland, a princípio, seja mais para preparar terreno para os próximos anos. Mas claro que surpresas podem acontecer.
