Mild spoilers for All Rise 3x10 below cut
Having just watched Episode 3x10, seeing who out of the main cast were attacked and injured, the re-emergence of the Lola/Dre plot point that I thought was resolved over the last 2 episodes, and just the general confusion of the episode, I really hope they pull it out the bag for the second half of the season...
I spent so much of the episode just going "Wait, what? Why?!"
There were some really clunky and clumsy plot points used to maneuver characters into situations (Ness really thought climbing up 7+ flights of stairs would be quicker than waiting for one of the many elevators?!) and it's very obvious now why Sherry was quickly shunted out of the episode early on.
(Also, I may be missing something from 3x09, but Lola not reacting to Sherry saying "I wasn't allowed to see them..." seemed odd. I wasn't aware she had any clue that there's some dodgy kind of elder abuse/ financial abuse going on with Sherry, so the fact she didn't do a double take and go "Not allowed to see your parents?" was odd. Possibly an oversight on my side, though.)
Shows need tension and obstacles and drama, of course, but I just think there could have been some different ones than what we got :/

Janny, why do you find it difficult to answer Mr. Driscoll's questions? I-I'm more comfortable when I'm online, when I'm just me. Alright, but we're here and you are a witness in a very serious proceeding. Errk isn't in my mind, Errk's me.

I really love Lola’s team in season 2 consisting of Sherri, Sara and Ness. They were so much fun to watch and though their time together was short I will always treasure it.

Note
I haven’t watched All Rise in a really long while but based on the gifs, I thought Emily and Ness were exes and Sam was the new flame? In the last gif it definitely seems like Emily is wingmanning for Ness? I read your tags so I know that’s not what’s happening but still, it seems like they could be adding a second f/f ship on the show which is unexpected. Especially for this network!
Haha, definitely not exes, but that was kind of a wingwoman moment!
Basically, Ness, Lola’s clerk, was shadowing Emily for the day so we got a lot of scenes where those various earlier interactions happened and the hints piled up, and then Emily’s case had a brutal outcome so Ness cancelled her plans (with Sam) to stay with Emily but Emily invited Sam along anyway when she saw it was her.
And yes, it is unexpected! Though of course Ness wasn’t even in tonight’s ep, they’re never gonna get that much screentime, not as much as the hets where we see them play out in full detail in successive episodes, but it’s something. I think it was also made easier for them by the fact that while Sam was initially with Luke, it’s pretty clear he’s Emily’s endgame so she was available and they already have Sara and Sherri for new m/f.

Alright so these are my favorite new shows and some of my favorite things  about them.
(in no particular order because I just can’t rate stuff)
-
ALL RISE
Tumblr media
This is a courtroom legal drama focusing on a newly appointed judge Lola Carmichael (played by the awesome Simone Missick who some people might remember as Misty from Luke Cage). It’s kinda light and full of humor but it also focuses on a lot of important subjects in the cases of the episode (there’s a case addressing ICE and its unjust practices, cases involving rich guys thinking they can get away with everything, a character getting stopped on the street for being black and many other important subjects).
My favorite part of this show is hard to decide on because I really love all of the characters and I’m interested in all of them but I think ONE of my favorite parts is the relationship between the judge and the judge’s assistant Sherri because they really do have some of the most funny scenes.
Tumblr media
Because Lola Carmichael is all chaotic energy and inspired ideas that are absolutely BRILLIANT but tend to cause a bit of further chaos. And Sherri Kansky is a control freak whose job in helping Lola and protecting her is complicated by Lola’s tendency to not listen. Anyway, yeah, I love them.
-
PRODIGAL SON
Tumblr media
This is a crime drama that focuses on Malcolm Bright a profiler who specializes in catching serial killers and whose father is an infamous serial killer who got arrested when Malcolm was around ten. And he’s honestly a hot mess. He suffers from night terrors is terrified of becoming like his father and that’s just the very surface of all that’s boiling under.
And my favorite part is the relationships in this show. And no, not the creepy and manipulative one between Malcolm and his father (though I do understand how without it the show wouldn’t be as compelling). I mean the relationship between Malcolm and his mother (also a hot mess played by Bellamy Young) and his sister (the one person in the family probably NOT paying a fortune to psychiatrists... for now).
And ESPECIALLY the one between Malcom and Gil, who is an NYPD lieutenant and basically wayyyyyy more of a father to Malcolm than certain other people we won’t mention.
Tumblr media
Also did I mention that Gil Arroyo is played by Lou Diamond Phillips, because I feel like that’s relevant information.
-
BATWOMAN
Tumblr media
I’m sure I don’t have to introduce this one but well... let’s do it anyway. It’s a superhero show focusing on Kate Kane also known as Batwoman. And I love her so much.
And it’s really fun so far. Also for those very few who didn’t know, Kate is a lesbian woman and how often do we get queer women as main characters? Exactly.
My favorite part of the show though? Mary Hamilton. Hands down. She’s Kate’s stepsister and she’s AMAZING. I mean who doesn’t love a med student hiding behind her public image of a rich social butterfly to run an illegal underground clinic to help Gotham’s poor?
Tumblr media
Also there’s so much sister angst and it’s awesome.
-
BLUFF CITY LAW
Tumblr media
I actually started watching it only yesterday after @isagrimorie mentioned how it reminded her of Burden of Truth and I am SO GLAD I did, It’s another legal drama. This one focuses on Sydney and her father Elijah (Jimmy Smits btw, also known to us all as Princess Leia’s father) after they start working together again following a loss in the family post years of estrangement.
During their estrangement Sydney worked as a corporate attorney (or as some people mention: worked for the ‘dark side’). But now she’s back to working civil rights cases.
My favorite part is probably Sydney herself. Though I also like the slowly mending relationship between her and her father (though the father did totally deserve her anger, I mean I like him but... yeah his daughter’s anger? Totally justified).
Anyway this show also does a lot to focus on some important subjects. And contains a married queer woman as part of the main cast.
Tumblr media
Woman on the right is Della Bedford a senior partner at the firm (and Elijah’s best friend). The woman on the left, her wife.
-
RAISING DION
Tumblr media
This is a superhero sci-fi show focusing on a single mother trying to raise and protect her kid after he starts showing superpowers while simultaneously dealing with having recently lost her husband, even more recently her job.
The heart of this show is the relationship between Nicole and her son Dion and it is ADORABLE. I really really do love this show.
It’s full of stunning visuals, great acting and pretty impressive special effects.
And without revealing too much I have to say that there’s a thing that flips what I at first had thought as the only flaw in this show into a very important lesson.
Tumblr media
Also the kid’s adorable.
-
STUMPTOWN
Tumblr media
A crime drama focusing on Dex Parios, a former Marine vet with PTSD who maybe drinks a little too much and has just found a new calling in becoming a private detective.
She’s a mess. Actually everyone here’s a mess and I love them all so much. Actually the only one who’s not an emotional mess in this show is probably Dex’s brother Ansel who has Down syndrome. Everyone else from Dex herself to her ex-con, current bar owner best friend and the detective she hooks up with is bruised around the edges.
Tumblr media
Also, just FYI Dex is bisexual.
-
Aaaand that’s it folks. These are all the new shows I really love and would absolutely recommend everyone check out.

“Ah, Styl. Glad you could make it here in time.”
Tumblr media
“Archbishop. You said you had an important task you wanted taken care of... what is it?”
Tumblr media
“We have detected the emergence of a new threat that must be dealt with  at once. Ushiromiya Maria, the Golden Child, presents a grave threat to human civilization as a whole. She resides on the world of Remnant, the same place where the beings Magnum Tenebrosum and Yog-Sothoth are said to reside. SInce this is the hoeworld of the Outer Gods, this mission must be handled with the utmost care. Styl Magnus, I, Archbishop Lola Stuart, hereby orders you to travel to the world of remnant, capture the Golden Child, and bring her here to England. Kanzaki Kaori and Sherry Cromwell are to join you and lead an assault force of  40+ Magicians of the English Puritan Church.”
Tumblr media
“W...What? You want us to travel to the land of the Outer Gods, and lead an assault force on a child?”
Tumblr media
“According to our information, that child is capable of conjuring powerful familiars, not to mention that her adoptive Father is the subordinate of a very powerful entity. Do not think of this child as an ordinary girl, but rather someone who utilizes dangerous magic and has dangerous resources at her disposal. However... this is not an execution. Bring the girl here to England, alive with her body intact. Am I understood Styl?”
Tumblr media
“Tch... this obviously sounds like a suicide mission. I don’t like this one bit, but those are your orders. It’s a job, so I have no choice but to do it.”
Tumblr media
“I’m glad you understand your place. Just remember that I still have control over that Grimoire Library you struggled to protect so much.”
Tumblr media
“...You don’t have to remind me. I’ll do it. I’ll inform Kanzaki and Cromwell of the mission and start to gather up our forces. I’ll even have my three apprentices  join us. However... may I be permitted to ask one question? How will we get there?”
Tumblr media
“Worry not Styl. We have the proper artifact for this kind of mission.”

11 + damon/misty uwo
I do so much for our lizzbians
11. “Wow, you look… amazing.”
As one should be, Damon was nervous as hell. A beautiful woman like Misty Lola, a model even, showing an interest in him. Him of all people. He couldn’t deny he had a tolerable look (flannel is always a mood whether people agree or not) and was fairly passable, but, to her standards? Unlikely.
Was he being pranked? Misty doesn’t seem the cruel type, but who knows. He was just someone that used to be from the Satellite (not that anyone could tell now, since the borders and markers were not done anymore, and he never got one)
He gripped the bouquet tightly in his hands. Tony said to get lilies. Damon wasn’t sure why exactly. Did she say something about lilies on one of her appearances? His hands shook. He was supposed to be going out with someone who had their own Wikipedia page. Well, he was friends with Crow and he had a page too, but for all the wrong reasons.
The door opened, Damon putting on his best I’m-not-nervous smile. “H-h-hello, Misty!”
She took the bouquet from Damon’s offering hand with a smile. If Tony was steering him wrong, Damon was gonna kill him. Misty of course, looked lovely as ever. Her shiny black hair, her beautiful matching jewelry, the cleavage Damon was certainly not staring at. “Wow,” she said, looking deep into his eyes, “you look… amazing.”
Damon blushed deeply. Him. Amazing. From her words. “I, uh, thank you!” His hand rested on the back of his hair, touching the lizard tail of his hair. How she thought he was cool with that was a surprise to him. “You look absolutely stunning! N-not that I’m trying to one-up you or anything on compliments!”
Misty let out a small genuine laugh. She seemed fair more approachable without the press around. “I can tell you’re nervous. I understand.” She left her hotel room, offering her arm, which Damon took. “Did the staff give you trouble?”
He nodded. “Crow gave them a very hard time for his markers. He was doing so much talking that they barely knew it was me that was here for you.”
She looked at him in thought. “I feel like I recognize that name.”
Damon stopped, fumbling to get the locket out of the breast of his suit. Suits were uncomfortable; how did people wear these all the time? He popped it open, showing it to her. “He’s the orange one. The others are Shinji, Tony, and Sherry.“ He looked more nervous again. “Is it weird to still wear lockets? Phones exist…”
Misty touched her fingers to the string that held the locket of her and Toby. “No, I don’t believe so.” Damon put the necklace back away, taking her arm again as they walked to the elevator. “I cannot wait to see what the evening has in store for us.”

All Rise 3x04
Robin couponing and buying everything in bulk. Does he have any pro tips?
Oooh, I love Lola’s breifcase.
Is Lola going to get food poisoning?
Weekly jogs? When did they start this then?
I was hoping for a pinky promise.
I would like to see Sara’s Barbie socks pls.
Lola’s boots 👀 Forklift chic?
Is Luke being manipulated by his client? The framing and background noises seem ominous.
Robin putting all the shea butter in her briefcase😂
She can put one in her drawer, one in the car, one in her purse etc
Amy taking the gratitude for Ness’s kindness.
Do the writers not want us to like Amy this season??
Sherri sees a psychic against her will. Did Lola plant her there?
Lola calling out the detectives 👏
“And do not interrupt me again.” Yes, ma’am, your honour.
Sherri still leaving the 802 🥺
The defendant is a forklift operator. Is Lola matching her wardrobe to her cases?? asldkfjsk
A discussion about what defunding the police really means. We love to see it. 👏
Oh, so the male judge actually has valid thoughts on police reform.
Saying this, she casually threw aside a large rock.
Oof. Did we need to see that. The description was vivid enough.
The detective didn’t do his job properly did he?
The Canadian mom always revealing vital information at the last minute
Emily: 😩
Cycle City Lola. Respectfully 👀🥵
Are Robin’s coupon moms scammers??
Theory: The defendant is guilty but will get off because of sloppy police work.
Mark and Luke shouldn’t be socializing during the trial, right?
The giftcard WAS counterfeit 😂 A wanted scammer.
“I plead the Fifth, Your Honor”
*tickle fight*
I love how they’re showing LoRo now he’s in it more. That they genuinely enjoy each others company and are still deeply in love.
Birth alerts? Wtf, Canada!
Sherri: 😡 🥺
Lola: It is a look of love and apology.
Sherri (and me):😭
I knew that was a Chimera! Wasn’t their a patient on House or Grey’s with it?
Luke definitely threw powerpoint parties in college.
Lola big mad. TBC
So much happening for everyone, I don’t know how real lawyers have the energy for it. I really enjoyed the casual domesticity this episode with LoRo, and Lemily too. The episodes need the calmer, lighter scenes between the heavy trial scenes. And I think the writers have so far found a nice balance.

Split Second
Jeff Atkins & Zach Dempsey & Reader fluff/drama. Used the prompt: “I’ve been thinking of you.”
People who didn't like Zach, you often told yourself, were people who didn't really know him. If you were just going off of the tall guy walking around the halls in his favourite grey joggers, hair perfect, smile crooked, and letterman jacket undone then it was easy to assume he was another run-of-the-mill basketball asshole. Those who considered Zach a friend knew that he was the dictionary definition of nice. He had his flaws. He was immature, he didn't handle criticism or conflict well, and he didn't really have his finger on the pulse, but where it counted, Zach was kind, patient, and loyal. Sometimes, you laid awake with your head falling between two pillows and wondered why he had taken up with you. He had such a good heart and you rarely felt deserving of it, but yet, Zach was falling more and more in love with you every passing weekend. Your school schedules didn't leave much room to hang out with the exception of lunch break, but every weekend, he made a point of spending time with you whether it was in his basement watching a movie, out on the beach, or surprising you with tickets to a concert or a sushi date night.
This Friday night had been in the making for a long time. Exams were finished, it was one week away from holiday break, and everyone was piling into Sherri Holland's house to celebrate. After showing up with Zach, Justin, and Jess, you pulled away from your boyfriend's chest and left the kitchen where the keg was to find your other friends, people you were close to before Zach asked you to be more than just the girl he liked all of two months ago. You had barely left the kitchen when you found your eyes locked with Jeff Atkins. He nodded at you casually, chin pointed right at you, and then your cheeks were suddenly sore from the stupid smile such a simple gesture from the gorgeous guy could create. He took your grin as an invitation and excused himself from his group of friends, pushing off the wall he was leaning on and coming over. Jeff licked his lips and laughed as you made room for yourself on the arm of the closest couch, letting him stay standing once he was close enough to say 'hey'.
“I don't recognize you when you aren't under Zach's arm anymore.” He teased. Jeff tried to sound casual, but he genuinely meant what he said and he trusted that you knew that.
“Is that a height joke or do you just miss our ten second chats in the hallway?” With your lockers having been beside each other's for years, you and Jeff had your fair share of morning conversations. There were few days that didn't start without one of you making the other laugh with an anecdote about the night before or the weekend.
“The second one.” Bashfully, he chuckled while glancing down at his clean white sneakers. They were in mint condition. “I feel like when we do get to talk now, it's just five seconds and then Zach's there, eating your face...”
Somewhat dramatically you rolled your eyes back so hard that your head leaned with them, but you felt it was warranted with the comment he made.
“I can tell him to wait until you leave to eat my face.”
“I'd appreciate that. It's always right after breakfast and one of these days I might throw up my cereal all over you.”
“So, this is for my own protection, right? You're so nice.” Joking along with him, you reached out and very softly knocked your knuckles into his shoulder. His eyes followed your fist and smiled at the touch. He had to nibble on his bottom lip, sucking on it to make the grin fade.
“Where is Zach anyway?” Jeff checked over his shoulder. With your boyfriend being so tall, it was generally hard to not spot him in a crowded room. Plus, Jeff hadn't really been kidding. You two were always attached at the hip now. He wasn't used to seeing one of you without the other within ear shot.
“He was in the kitchen last time I saw him.” You shrugged. “I was actually looking for Lola.” She had been your best friend since grade school and it didn't feel like exams were actually done without a 'we did it' hug from her, her candy sweet perfume filling your nose whenever you embraced. You swore she sprayed it on all her clothes and through her space buns.
“She was in the basement playing flip cup last I saw her.” Jeff mentioned back.
“Thank you.” With both palms, you pushed off the couch to go see if she was still down there and not a complete liquored mess yet, but Jeff sidestepped and stopped you. “Hey, how serious are you and Zach?” He knew the answer, but he still asked. Jeff wanted an in. If you weren't as interested in his friend as he knew Zach was in you, he felt like, maybe, it would be okay for him to ask you out. Maybe, he wasn't a complete dick for wanting a chance with the girl with the huge smile he saw every morning before first period.
“Um...” The question caught you completely off guard. “Pretty serious.”
“It's been, like, a month?”
“Two.” You squinted to remember, but that sounded about right. “We only made it official a month ago, I guess.” Zach had been so nervous and struggled to fumble out the question in the backseat of his car, you still straddling his lap after a post-practice handsy make out session.
“Shit.” Jeff tried to play it cool. He nodded and hoped he didn't make you feel bad,  but he would have regretted it if he never asked. “I missed my chance.”
“What?” Your eyebrows fell over your eyes and covered them slightly as they narrowed into him. While you had only been at Sherri's party for a grand total of seventeen minutes, you hadn't had a sip of alcohol yet, but your head felt cloudy from the conversation. Jeff, one of the most constant people in your life, had thrown you for a total loop. “What are you talking about?” He had never asked you out. You two never saw one another outside of school unless at an away game or at a party that Zach drove you to. If Jeff had feelings for you, he hid them like it was his career.
“It's not a big deal.” Now he was starting to peel away, not about to embarrass himself in the middle of a stuffed living room and underneath a dance song that he passionately disliked. “Have fun. I'll catch you in a bit.”
“No.” The conversation wasn't over now. You followed him as he weaved through a few bodies and headed down the hardwood hallway, heading back for the basement he had been in before. A round of beer pong or flip cup was sure to take his mind off of how ridiculous he currently felt. “Jeff, what was that?” You reached for his elbow and prodded him to continue. The hallway right before the basement door felt more private at least in comparison to the living room where people were everywhere.  “You said you missed your chance...”
“Look, I'm not about to hit on my buddy's girlfriend. Zach's the best...” Everybody always gave him shit for his bad moves with girls, so Jeff sincerely was happy that the star basketball player had found someone he really cared about and who actually wanted him in return. “I just thought we had a thing. We always talk before class and at the end of the day,  but I was wrong...”
Inhaling deeply, you fought with your mouth not to overpower your brain. There were words packed behind your painted pink lips, but you knew better than to let them out. Your brain screaming at you to simply tell Jeff that you were flattered, give him a hug, and then walk away to find Zach, but your mouth had other plans.
“We did.” In a whisper, you admitted. “I thought so too.” There had definitely been flirtatious banter that bounced between you both too easily. “Just...I thought it was just me and then Zach asked me to go to that concert and...”
“I know how the story goes.” He had heard a version from you, from your boyfriend, and from a couple other people in the hallways. “You guys are happy and I'm not trying to fuck with that...just...I've been thinking of you.” He admitted with a fast nod and then slid his hands into his jeans. There was a silence and you hated yourself for wishing he would fill it with a touch or a kiss or something. Both your eyes were glued to one another and if it wasn't for the shadow that fell between you both, you weren't sure what would have happened next. Jeff was the first to pull his eyes away, spotting Zach at the end of the hall with a happy, but confused expression wearing his face. “Hey, man! There you are.”
“Yeah, I was just looking for [Y/N].” He pointed to you and cocked his head to one side, silently asking what he had just walked in on.
“Ah, I was looking for you.” Jeff played it cool, walking away from the warm wall he was up against and going in to greet his buddy, raising an open palm to clap Zach's hand. “When I saw [Y/N], I knew you'd be around.” He teased to Zach, turning around to see over his shoulder how stunned you still looked. “What kind of boyfriend are you, man? Your girl doesn't have a drink.” Acting like the goofy friend he liked to be, Jeff shoved Zach in the gut and started to lead both of you into the kitchen, Zach's arm stretched out for you to take his hand.
Reluctantly, you slip your palm into his and followed suit, suddenly feeling less sure about what you wanted than you had all of five minutes before.

We Asked 10 Bartenders: What’s the Most Underrated Whisk(e)y?
Tumblr media
Numbers are a big deal in the whiskey world. The headline-grabbing bottles are those with the largest age statements, highest point scores, and record-breaking auction sales. But the aged grain spirits landscape is much broader than just a handful of hallowed bottles.
From American whiskeys with interesting mash bills, to innovative products from Japan and beyond, the whiskey category is rich with lesser-known brands waiting to be discovered.
To help broaden your whiskey horizons in 2020, VinePair asked bartenders around the U.S. what they consider the most underrated whisk(e)y. Here’s what they recommend picking up.
“Old Forester Rye. One of the oldest continuously operated distilleries in Kentucky, this rye isn’t overly spicy, so it makes it a great application for just about any whiskey-based cocktail. [The] price point makes it great for consumers and cocktail margins alike.” — Lucas Huff, Mixology Director, Bently Heritage Estate Distillery, Minden, NV
“Ohishi Sherry Cask. This brand is thinking outside of the box and creating a non-traditional Japanese whisky. Produced from rice, this whisky will remind you of overproof shochu aged in a sherry cask. After one sip of this whisky, you will discover vanilla notes, plenty of fruits, nuts, and spices. This whisky is highly recommended for people who are partial to whisky aged in sherry casks.” — Slava Borisov, Mixologist, Travelle at The Langham, Chicago, IL
“When it comes to American whiskey, I tend to lean toward Wild Turkey 101. It is overproof but has a sweetness that counterbalances the heat of the booze. It also has a great rye-forward flavor that I love. It’s great for either sipping or mixing; personally, I’m a sipper and it’s my go-to after a long day.” — Amanda Thomas, Bar Chef, SoBou, New Orleans, LA
“For this whiskey, we will have to travel all the way to Lynchburg, Tenn., to the Uncle Nearest Distillery for their 1856. This whiskey has an amazing back story. Nathan ‘Nearest’ Green was a slave that distilled whiskey at a man named Dan Call’s residence. Another young man came to live at the farm and learned how to make whiskey from Nearest. That man’s name was Jack Daniel. This whiskey pays homage to Nearest and his unheard legacy uncovered by CEO Fawn Weaver; it helps that it’s great whiskey to boot.” — Jamien Tomlinson, Beverage Director, High Horse, Raleigh, NC
“I’m all about bang for my buck so I’ll say Larceny from Heaven Hill. At $20 a bottle, it often gets overlooked, but that’s a mistake. It has this unique sweetness that’s like a hug from the best butterscotch you’ve ever had. Not overly complex, just a great whiskey.” — Robert Barceló III, Head Bartender, Simon & The Whale, New York, NY
“In general terms, I’d say American single malt is the most underrated style of whiskey out there now. It lacks definition, which makes for high variability between brands. Because of this freedom, I suspect there will be more interesting brands emerging on the scene soon enough. In specific terms, I witness most days an interesting paradox. When I tell guests that one of my favorite whiskeys is Wild Turkey 101 Rye, I get some odd looks. Certainly, the popularity and size of Wild Turkey is undeniable, yet many of my patrons have low regard [for] this wonderful juice. But, a good portion of my job is to delight people with the unexpected. So when I make them something with Wild Turkey 101 Rye, it’s satisfying to see them transition from skepticism to enjoyment.” — Devin Chapnick, Lead Bartender, Poka Lola, Denver, CO
“The U.S. market has been sleeping on Glen Grant 15-Year-Old Scotch. O.K., we love bourbon, but this is equally impressive Speyside juice, aged with integrity in ex-bourbon barrels, non-chill filtered (leaving the perfect viscosity), strong, and fully rounded. One rock will suffice. Stamp it.” — Josh Cameron, Head Bartender, Boulton & Watt, New York, NY
“I feel that Canadian Whisky as a whole is a much-misunderstood spirit, as the regulations on it are very loosely written. However, that is no reason to write off the entire category, particularly as it contains one of my favorite rye whiskies: Lot 40. It is a high-rye whisky with lots of spice and character, and makes one hell of a Manhattan. It is one of my go-tos when making cocktails and succinctly represents what Canadian whisky can be.” — Erick Castro, Co-founder, Raised By Wolves and Polite Provisions, San Diego, CA
“Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt Scotch. It’s affordable, great to mix with, and absolutely drinkable on its own. That isn’t always the case in this price range.” — Justin Simko, Bar Manager, The Bar at Husk, Charleston, SC
“In an age where very few celebrity brands are able to shine through, Blackened has really been able to deliver. Its complexity adds a dimension to cocktails and it can be enjoyed on its own, which is no easy feat. Metallica respected the industry, teamed up with the right tastemakers, thought outside the box, and gave us something to talk about…  after the mosh pit, of course.” — Marc Shelton, Owner, LKSD Kitchen, Downey, CA

We Asked 10 Bartenders: Whats the Most Underrated Whisk(e)y?
In specific terms, I witness most days an interesting paradox. it would be great to get a summary for black mould because I can only buy the complete book with all five issues (hurray for living in Germany) so that would be really good to understand what happened there.
You and a bunch of other people, apparently, so here we go!
I also did summaries of Body Work (here) and Night Witch (here). As before, this is a plot summary, not a script-style retelling, without any of the jokes and minor plot points or weird nudity seriously it held up even worse on a re-read but it’s still a full spoiler summary.
Issue 1
SahraGuleed explores a house that belongs to the daughter of family friends, who hasfled in terror. Everything looks normal – well, except for the open bottle ofwine on the table – until a spot of black mould grows an arm and tries toattack her. She recruits Peter, and they return to the house with cleaningsupplies. Peter gives a heads-up of their plan to Nightingale, who along withToby is helping Tom Debden, the mechanic from Body Work, to exorcise the last vehicle containing a part of thehaunted BMW from that story – an ice-cream truck. Peter and Sahra try to cleanup the mould and think they might have succeeded when it tries to trap them inthe house, and magic only makes it stronger. Peter uses the open bottle of wine– now mostly acetic acid – to burn the mould and they escape. They get aprofessional cleaner in, and she tells them a nearby apartment block is alsohaving a very bad black mould infestation.
One pager: Molly, Peter, and Nightingale celebrate Peter’sbirthday with dinner and a very expensive bottle of wine from the Folly’scellars.
Issue 2
Peter andSahra go to investigate the apartment block. A representative of the owners,Miss Petal, lets them in, but tells them there’s nothing wrong – the pestexterminator says she’s lying, and the only flat that didn’t have a problem wasthe one flat devoted to social housing. The occupants, who are not the legalowner but her niece and the niece’s boyfriend, say all the other residentswarned them not to move in, citing horrific nightmares and obsessive thoughts.Sahra’s friends’ daughter had the same symptoms. Peter and Sahra go to visitthe social housing flat’s owner, Lola, in her rest home. She falls asleep, buther friend Sherry says she was once married to a black jazz musician namedBuddy Rainbird and they had trouble finding housing as a mixed-race couple, ending up living in housing called the Wellcome Matt properties which hadterrible black mould.
Peter andSahra go to check out two other houses Tonya the pest exterminator says havehad strange mould problems. Peter hallucinates leaving London with his motherwhen she split up with his dad, which never happened, and is then attacked by agroup of white men.
One pager: Beverley throws a whole lot of wine bottlesinto the speedboat of a couple who litter in the Thames.
Issue 3
Peterquickly deals with his three attackers and Sahra arrests the one he throws outthe window with impello. They’re allarrested and interviewed, and one confesses they were hired to evict a tenantfor a landlord – the tenant was an accountant called Jody Khan and the men assumedPeter was him. When they go to interview the property’s owner, Miss Petal isthere. She works for the same company that owned the Wellcome Matt properties, whichalso owns the house Peter was investigating, but says its founder is dead andhis son in Australia.
Peter callsBeverley, who is having Maksim the ex-gangster clean up some black mould in herhouse. Peter panics and rushes over. Maksim has a flashback to partying inMoscow. He also has guns in his car. Peter and Maksim clean the mould upcarefully, but a spot falls onto Peter’s noddy suit. He leaves the bag with thenoddy suit in the Folly kitchen, and after he and Nightingale go to bed themould grows to fill the suit, picks up some knives, and leaves the kitchen.
One-pager: Peter and Miss Petal exchange business cards.Beverley floods Miss Petal’s house in revenge.
Issue 4
Peter isasleep on the couch in the coach house when the mould-man enters to attack him, quickly followed by Molly, also armed with knives and in her pyjamas. Theyfight. Nightingale arrives and attacks it with a sword-cane, since magic makesit stronger. Peter runs and fetches propane torches from the lab, and they burnit. One scrap floats under the couch, but Toby finds it. Peter, Molly, andNightingale sit down on the sofa and have a drink.
Overbreakfast, Peter and Nightingale discuss the case. Peter has asked Tonya thepest exterminator to contact all properties owned by the Wellcomme trust – all ofthe tenants have been having nightmares. Guleed goes back to the office, butfinds only an old man who insults her and tells her Mr Wellcome Jr is inAustralia.
Peter goesto visit his father, who tells him about Buddy Rainbird – that he died of alung infection from mould, and was said to be into voodoo.
Guleed goesto the rest-home to re-interview his wife Lola, who insists Matthew Wellcomesenior is alive and swore at Father Christmas.
Peter andNightingale go to visit an old acquaintance of Nightingale’s who is a vodunpractitioner. She pulls a gun on Peter.
One-pager: Varvara is earning treats like vodka in prisonby shooting down drones with magic.
Issue 5: Nightingale’s friend Asterid, the vodunpractitioner, is persuaded to put down the gun – which is Nightingale’s oldservice revolver – and after insulting Peter roundly tells them Buddy Rainbird wasn’t a practitioner, he justput on a show for white people. Guleed rings to tell them Matthew Wellcomesenior is allegedly alive – the rest home attendant remembers there was a man who swore at someone dressedlike Father Christmas. She also says Lola was only married to Buddy for a fewmonths; he spent most of his life with Sherry, Lola’s friend.
Peterdrives to Herefordshire, where Sherry lives, and meets up with Dominic Croft tointerview her. Sherry admits to being responsible for the mould – she’s a hedgewizard. She tells Peter the fight he had when he was mistaken for Jody Khanstrengthened the mould with magic, and he’s too late.
In London, the mould-man reappears and steals a guitar off the tenants in the socialhousing flat. They call Guleed. She and Nightingale go to the apartments to findMatthew Wellcome senior – the old man from the office – dead, having fallenfrom the penthouse. Nightingale goes into the apartments and finds Miss Petal freakingout in the foyer. The mould-man – perhaps Buddy Rainbird’s ghost – plays a songon the guitar, then vanishes. Nightingale records the song on his phone.
Peter andNightingale discuss the case in the Folly kitchen, and agree that nothing canbe proven against Sherry, but she’ll go on their list of practitioners.
One-pager: Dominic receives information about a heroinstash from a talking fox, and in return arrests a group of fox-hunters.
Character notes/fun bits outside of plot:
Peterrefers to Nightingale as “Thomas” mentally when being held at gunpoint
Debdenthe mechanic keeps trying to hit on Molly
TheFolly has a new rule about electronic devices at the table
Guleed sings Wrecking Ball to herself while she’s exploring her friend’s house
Molly makes liver ice cream for Toby
…honestlythat’s it this wasn’t really much for character development
