Dreaded Decision
Locs This four letter word seems to attract the unwarranted informed and uninformed opinion of every person, everywhere. Despite our cultural diversity and "social progress" as a people, we hit mental gridlock when it comes to the black woman and her hair. What's more astounding....it matters not that the "down with the creamy crack" (perms) movement has exploded, this gridlock still exists within our own community...and many of us are shamed by our own for breaking the box of conformity. I got my first-and last perm when I was 6 years old. How vividly I remember the day I knelt down in church for prayer. My church hat fell to the floor, revealing my bald head. Much to my chagrin, the sound of gasps, whispers and giggles soon followed. You see, the perm took out my hair. Heretofore, I had gorgeous, thick, long hair that was the envy of every black girl in my church. But the giggles of these girls and their dismayed looks encouraged me to make the decision, never get a perm again!!!!! Soon thereafter my life consisted of presses, braids, cornrows and puff balls. Around the age of 16, I contemplated Locs but wasn't sure if I was ready for the commitment. The natural hair movement..wasn't really a movement back then. A lot of taboo was associated with Locs. Around the same time, I developed my first crush and of course it was of utmost importance that my hair lay flat or curled at all times! :) Needless to say, I decided against Locs. By the time I hit 21 I decided my hair had suffered enough heat damage and it was time to throw out the flat iron and blow dryer and go heat free. My protective style of choice was twists and I did lots of co-washing (I'm all about keeping it simple). The luster and health returned ...and boy, did my hair grow! It was mid back length. But two kids, a major lifestyle change, and a hair cut left me not knowing what to do with my hair. Once again, I contemplated Locs. I'd also gained a few loc'd friends and associates that made the decision quite tempting. It was while I was sitting in my living room, rocking my big hair, listening to Farrakhan give his speech at the Million Man March, that I decided I would take the plunge and loc my hair. The sincerity and earnestness that was conveyed in each word Farrakhan spoke stirred something within me. With each passing minute, these feelings grew. Feelings of confirmation, pride in being black, indignation over the blood of my people spilled in the streets and no one caring. My desire to feel more connected to my African roots and to mother earth grew stronger. And at the end of Farrakhan's sermon, I decided: I'm going to be a loc'd sistah! Three weeks later, I began my journey! It's been three months and I'm loving it. I feel so free yet connected to something that's bigger than me. I feel strong. Invincible. And my attraction to loc'd brothas...has grown a bit! Lol So, I've decided to carry you along on my loc journey. I'll open up about the good, great and flakey!
