A lot more kids and teens movies, shows, and cartoons should be dubbed into Native American, Australian, African, endangered Asian languages and Eastern European languages.
Even the most endangered Native American languages (Yuchi, Mikasuki, Lilooet, Dene, Wampanoag, Kanza, Mohegan, Wintuan, Karuk, Navajo, and Shawnee) could be saved by being dubbed into various fun kids shows and movies.

ENVS*3000 Blog Prompt #3
Nature and Privilege: A Prevailing Canadian Heritage
“Privilege”: an important topic that only recently seems to have become a “buzzword”, though it has been shaping our world throughout most of human history. Through my experience, in Canada we see privilege in a way that is inseparable from nature. Privilege is, in my opinion, the unearned benefits/advantages we are given through life for no other reason than the conditions we are born into: the color of your skin, your sex, the country or region you were born in, the socioeconomic standing of your parents, the first language you were taught, and so much more play a factor. Privilege comes at the expense of others who are denied it. Having privilege is not the choice of the person receiving it, nor is it the choice of those being denied it. What defines us is how we decide to acknowledge and utilize the advantages we are given.

Within Canada people experience the privilege of interacting with the natural world, having natural areas “conserved”, and being able to access nature in ways that have been made convenient and relatively free of severe risk. I put “conserved” in quotations for the same reason that our access to nature is a privilege: such conservation is done to the satisfaction of a colonial government, and this decision making is often done at the expense of others.
I am a white woman from a middle-class family. I grew up well fed, sheltered and with little knowledge that the land I was free to explore had a long history of bloodshed and cruelty. As a white woman, I experience Canada with the lens of a settler, a person who has taken the land for granted, who is happy to enter a provincial park and remark on how “untouched” the nature is. I have been lucky to live in many provinces, from Nova Scotia, to Ontario, and currently British Columbia. When thinking of and interpreting the heritage of the land I might identify the plants and consider how they were/are used by First Nations peoples, I might consider this as I also wonder how much a tree would be worth to loggers, or whether I could sell some of the edible mushrooms I spotted on my hike. My point being that for far too long I had not acknowledged that land that I inhabit as belonging to someone else. I had not considered our method of conservation and protection as controversial, that the rightful owners of the territories I tread might view our attempts at maintaining nature, as we perceive it should be, as wrong.

It is so important as a nature interpreter to openly acknowledge the lens (and encompassing privileges) you were raised with and try to present information that expands the collective perspective in ways that are compassionate, fair, and factually accurate.
My question for you is: do you think that by ignoring your privilege you are more likely to inadvertently expose yourself to higher risk in nature?
Thanks for reading!

Today was... I don't know. The Nordics spent most of the day on the road. This morning, they had breakfast on the patio at their hotel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After breakfast, they immediately packed back up and got ready for another long day on the road. Mun Nor- I mean, Finland was still feeling very sleepy, so he slept for a while and eventually woke up while on a very hard route...
They had to go very slow, they were up pretty high, and the roads were kinda small. These pictures don't really show how high up the route was, but...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The route to the town of Lilooet was some LOTR shit.
Soon enough, they passed by Revelstoke, Salmon Arm and Kamloops. They were still really high up, but it was really pretty! The lakes and mountains were huge. Denmark said that he wouldn't mind living in Salmon Arm.

It was still a long way to their destination. Along the way, the blue colours in the lake became more prominent. The Nordics had to stop at a resting area, for their brakes were wearing out. (part 1)

This all really started with a phone call to my friend that works at Enterprise rent a car. He hooked me up with a staff discount on a small Toyota from the Kamloops Airport.
Tumblr media
I was originally just driving a bit out of my way to go visit family that I hardly ever see.
Tumblr media
Last June I was a part of a cross continent tour speaking each night about my struggle with depression, thoughts of suicide and how you can get help if you also feel this way.
You can check out my work here.
Tumblr media
I had two days off and decided to jump out of the van full of greasy un-showered mid twenty year old dudes, and jump into a tiny rental car with my Kiwi brother to go see family who live near whistler.
Tumblr media
In my head, as I loaded google maps to check routing, I was just going through some small towns and I’m sure a couple mountains. Knowing that I was in The Rockies I gave it the generic “Well I’m sure it will be beautiful” preparation and didn’t think much of it.
Tumblr media
I just wish someone had told me what I was in for.
The road is called The Duffy Lake Road, or HWY 99. We drove from Kamloops up Hwy 1 to Cache Creek where we then turned on to Hwy 99. Basically all you need to do is stay on that road. You will have to follow a few signs in Lilooet to not end up on 12 but just follow the RV’s and you will be ok. Or don’t and have a great time being lost and feeling free. You can take this road all the way to Vancouver, which is likely where you are heading anyways after you spend all your money in Whistler.
Tumblr media
This road will take you through every thing you want and more. Crazy cliffs , sharp peaks, Meadows and flats, massive rivers. You can touch snow peaks, and witness that snow turn into waterfalls. It will make you question your cars braking system and wonder how mechanically sound it all is. You will wonder what it’s like to live there and why you’ve never heard of this place.
It really is something.
Tumblr media
All of these photo’s were taken in the time span of about 4 hours.
If you can, take a full day to drive the road. You will thank yourself for that. We were late and had to keep moving so it was quite painful to drive by some incredible scenes.
Tumblr media
I don’t really know what to say other than, It doesn’t often happen in life that you just stumble into something so incredible that it changes you. It was like, that day, out of the naive and normal decision I made to go visit family, everything went right.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
You should do yourself a favour and plan to drive this road sometime.
Here is a map of the road that we drove.
I shot all of these on a Canon 60D with an 18-55mm kit lens.
Check those camera’s out here: http://amzn.to/2j0wsWN
And edited them in Lightroom
Thank you for reading this.
