The battle ended in a tie.
You stood amidst the corpses of your team's. Their tattered, wounded bodies were left ignored upon the thick layer of snow, painting it in a vibrant shade of crimson. Your fellow rebelling mages stood no chance against the Noventrates.
"Damn it..." you swore under your breath, mustering up the remaining strength you had, fighting against the aching sensation growing in your limbs. You cannot give up, you mustn't give up – at least, not yet. You still had a goal to reach. You knew it was the core "desire" which drove a wizard – it kept them alive; restrained them from losing control, from turning into those monsters that destroyed your dreams. Their "desire" gave them powers and flourished their abilities – and your desire was to burn this tower to the ground. It sounded far-fetched, but nothing would be impossible if you're determined enough.
The magus who had beaten your team to a pulp seemed to be standing there, his cocky smirk taunting you. The insults that leaked from his mouth made your blood boil. You could bear one or two obscene words, but the moment that jerk mentioned how inefficient and worthless your fellow rebel brothers were, you knew you had lost it.
Wiping the blood off your lips, you plunge towards the said bastard, unsheathing the dagger you kept with you. It's a terrible decision to bring a dagger to a battle revolving magic, but you neither had the strength nor the rational mindset at that moment to think about that. You saw the magus take a defensive stance, and you tighten your grip on the dagger. As you were about to stab him, a cold force blasted off the dagger from your hand, making it fly off somewhere nearby. And you, crash onto the ground a second afterwards.
You groaned from the impact, the pain and an eerie sense of cold coursing through your body as you continuously made futile attempts to sit up. Adding to your irritation, the magus laugh condescendingly even more.
"That was quite a move there," The magus taunted, observing you as you gave him the most threatening glare you could.
"Shut up, you piece of shit. People like you turned Godheim into a hellhole!" you spat out, not minding your words anymore.
"Is that all?" The magus grinned even more as he looked down at you.
"You better shut your mouth up before I-"
"Enough." a monotonous voice interrupted.
You couldn’t help but roll your eyes at the familiar voice. Of course, he had to come witness this. Perfect. You noticed a long stream of those familiar blue hair in your peripheral vision.
"What happened here?"
So apathetic, that heretic – never batting an eye to the neverending screams and pleas of the suffering mages within the narrow walls of the Magi Tower. Myriad mages had met their end within that place, yet this man – oh, this man did not give a shit. He only used your fellow mage friends as if they were pawns in a chess game merely; sending them on so-called "missions" to defeat glacial butterflies, and all your friends gradually met their demise.
"A bunch of rookies thinking that they are better than us," that magus spoke with contempt, sneering at you. "I have taken care of them, sir."
The Archmage then turned to you. You notice a small glimmer in his monocle glass as you looked up to see him, his expression remained neutral, unfazed by the chaos surrounding him. And your scowl was ever more apparent.
"You're still alive." That's all he said, and it was enough to get a rise out of yourself again.
"Listen to me, Clarence, you think you're up to something, but I'm telling you: your plans are bound to fail."
Clarence's expression however, remained unchanged. He simply let out an inaudible sigh before crouching down beside your body.
"My plans are none of your concern," he muttered as he grabbed your wrist, his gloved fingers feeling more cold against your arm – you let out a wince. Numbness began to crawl up your arm, the blue-ish hue taking over your side.
"Not so... Fast." You made futile attempts to kick him off. And to that, his pressed down your leg forcefully against the ground. His slender fingers against the fabric of your pants felt somewhat comforting though– wait, what are you even thinking? You can't seriously be fawning over him at a dire situation like this. But you couldn’t stop yourself, your cheeks felt warm the second he slid his fingers up your thigh.
You noticed Clarence's brows furrow as he let out a hum in disdain.
"What's wrong this time?" you asked.
"... Your pulse rose fifty beats."
wait, what the hell? You wanted to scream out loud. Didn’t you find any other reasonable time to embarass yourself? In front of the damn Archmage as well? You keep staring at him, and your pulse probably increased another beat in the meantime.
Clarence let out yet another sigh and let your hand go. He stood up and looked at the magus. "Send them to the dungeon," he said without a trace of emotion.
"Wait, what?!" You shouted. Clarence could kill you then and there, but he changed his mind; he let you live – live the rest of your cursed life in the cellars, undoubtedly.
None paid heed to your protests. You only shouted and argued as you were being escorted away to the dungeons of the tower by other wizards. You only watched as the imposing man walked away, not even looking back for once.
