Maurizio Costanzo left us yesterday. Such a familiar face and voice in italian television.
You know I went absolutely crazy when Harry started singing a couple of times “Se telefonando” during HSLOT last year. Here I am yet again bringing this song back.
Maurizio Costanzo wrote the lyrics to one of the most iconic songs in our culture and nonetheless Ennio Morricone (yes, yes, the same Morricone Harry was watching the documentary about and shared the story on ig? That one) arranged the melody. This is Mina performing the song. The only live performance of Se telefonando by Mina ever. What a trio. Anyway I am a bit sad after yesterday, because we keep losing these majestic people who were part of our families basically everyday you know? And they leave huge empty spaces… looking at the scene right now nobody is gonna fit in their shoes.
I hope Maurizio can eat all the candies and ice cream he wants now, without Maria hiding it in the highest kitchen counters ❣️

On Chinese and Eastern Dramatic Acting vs Western
Part 1    Part 2
Mostly in ref to the Untamed/Word of Honor, but applies to a lot of East Asian works-
I’ve been getting the sense that people I know from the west (also being Asian-American myself) often interpret Chinese/Japanese/Korean drama and theatre to be too corny/cheesy/over-acted. A quick search on some internet forums confirms this. Maybe it’s because I used to watch a lot of C-dramas when I was a kid (Legend of the Condor Heroes/Return of C Heroes/Journey to the West/The Reincarnated Princess/etc), I personally did not notice that the acting was over the top.
I don’t really speak for the quality of acting of these actors because I barely follow them in their careers, but I do know that some of them are immature actors or don’t have much formal training (which may cause the cheesiness above). However, Eastern dramatic acting in general does seem like a common complaint, so I decided to look into it - this is all coming from someone who JUST recently got back into watching C-dramas btw, doing my own research so don’t mind me if there’s some incorrect things down here, I am by NO means at all an expert in drama and theater (lol):
Tumblr media
^Villains are often depicted with very exaggerated facial expressions (Above, Xue Yang, The Untamed)
Part 1
1. Chinese concept of mo vs western equivalent of “mimesis” or “imitation”
From this, an excellent chapter on Chinese theatrical concepts vs Western concepts.
Mo plays a significant part in traditional Chinese theatre, usually held to be antithetical to the realism of Western theatre because of its emphasis on theatricality.
Mo means mimesis or imitation, but in a very different sense from the Western concept. One of the first Chinese scholars to use this term, Fu Sinian, used it to compare Western theatre to Chinese theatre:
Presenting a real event and performing an entertaining show are not compatible. The former emphasizes imitation (yige zhong mofang^b); the latter stresses spontaneity and entertainment. The former performance produces a lifelike image; the latter has nothing to produce. The former puts emphasis on the plot; the latter puts emphasis on theatricality. Therefore they are completely contradictory to one another.
This guy actually goes onto critique Chinese theater, saying it should be more like Western realism, so that there will “be no singing, and the acting will imitate people’s real gestures.” However! Other Chinese critics tried to approach Western vs traditional Chinese drama as two DIFFERENT but still valid forms of art. For example, Yu Shangyuan (1927) said western performance is “writing realistically” (xie shi) and chinese performance as “writing suggestively” (xie yi). Western dramas really rely on an accurate/semi-accurate representation of life and realism. Traditional Chinese drama and acting relied on the “symbolic and imaginative.”
Then what is mo? It is the emotional display, the emotional revelation, that is shown on stage. Starting from the Yuan dynasty, the Chinese drama was thought to be a continuation of poetry rather than its own independent stage art.
Poetry is where the intent of the heart goes. Lying in the heart, it is “intent”; when uttered in words, it is “poetry.” When an emotion stirs inside, one expresses it in words; finding this inadequate, one sighs over it; not content with this, one sings it in poetry; still not satisfied, one unconsciously dances with one’s hands and feet. [anonymous, 1975, from Shi Daxu 200 BCE]
Chinese drama with dancing and singing, was the most expressive product of poetry. The importance of mo cannot be stressed enough - it is the measure by which traditional Chinese drama was judged, how well this drama make you feel? Love, pain, loss, guilt, happiness? Plot becomes something that doesn’t matter as much (more on that later).
Tumblr media
^Beijing/Peking Opera - highly stylized, emotive, “unrealistic” performances
To emphasize how central and important this concept is, it’s thought that a good Chinese playwright never fails to “seize a highly dramatic scene to stage an elaborate presentation of an emotional state.”
Love is of source unknown, yet it grows ever deeper. The living may die of it, by its power the dead live again. [Peony Pavilion, Mu dan ting]
This quote really shows how important it was to show these emotions on stage, to inspire the audience to feel deeply. Chinese critics believed that the best part about drama was how efficient it is to display emotion. Playwrights should “depict extreme bitterness, extreme happiness, extreme silliness, and extreme sobriety; imitate these feelings to the utmost (miao mo jin xing^p).”
Such performances are not necessarily accurately mimicking reality, but they are obtained through the “revelation” of a character’s internal emotional world.
2. Mo vs the depiction of reality or theatrical truth
The Chinese concept of aesthetic truth relates a lot to theatrical truth. In a lot of traditional Chinese art, painting, poetry, etc, aesthetic truth is not empirical, and doesn’t have to be accurate to life, or realistic. It’s a “truth that lies beyond mere superficial likeness.”
To the Chinese artist, an accurate resemblance between art and reality is not only superficial but often distorting. Chinese artists hold a dialectical view on the “form” (xing) and the “spirit” or “content” (shen) of an artistic object. According to them, xing  and shen are not always complementary. On the contrary, they often stand in opposition to one another. (referenced in the chapter above)
Traditional Chinese artists would rather represent the object with the wish that their representation matches its spirit, or abstract identity, than its actual form because a “photographic image is a shallow image.” It’s easy to draw a picture of something realistically, but it’s much harder and more satisfying to depict its nature, its feeling, its spirit.
This also naturally affects theater and dramatic performances.
Dramatic writing can be divided into two types: “a painting-like work” or a “transformed work,” in which the latter has higher artistic value because it reaches more towards the essence of dramatic object. Realistic imitations are fine, but they’re not really enough to reveal the mo or true feelings of something.
In addition, traditional Chinese dramatists believe that “all dramas are nothing but allegories. One need not ask about their origins in actual life.” You might be able to see, then, that these older playwrights and critics really fancied the overdramatic depictions of emotions.
a. The Chinese notion of theatrical truth/aesthetic truth vs European
Onto what we, as part of the Western audience, are more used to:
For Italian neoclassical critics, the pleasure of a drama hinges  on how accurate, how realistic, the depiction is. Castelvetro, the leading Italian Neo-Classical critic and creator of the concept of “the three unities,” claims thus:
We cannot imagine a king who did not exist, nor attribute any action to him.
Another Italian critic, Robortellus, said that a creative/imaginative story with no “verisimilitude” (truthfulness, in this context, realism) is less appealing than one that imitates a real-life event:
Thus if a tragic plot contained an action which did not really take place and was not true, but was represented by the poet himself in accordance with verisimiltude, it would perhaps move the souls of the auditors, but certainly less.
So basically, it’s fundamentally the opposite of Chinese theater. Italian dramatic works prized being realistic, being properly adapted from reality and real events. Chinese dramatic works, however, enjoyed the emphasis on heartfelt emotional demonstrations, or mo. Even in critical writings, the word “truth” is used, but it is usually used to modify the word “heart” or “emotion.” It is very concerned with the internal, the truthfulness of heartfelt emotional expression.
Taken these contexts, you can see why the Chinese stage/dramas are wholly “unreal” as Tao-Ching Hsu puts it. Everything, the makeup, the costumes, the props, is expressive and suggestive rather than imitative.
b. Bejing/Peking Opera, jingju
Tumblr media
A famous example is the Beijing/Peking Opera, jingju. The makeup and costumes themselves are fantastical representations. The colors and patterns suggest different moods, temperaments, characters, and even changes in emotions. Actors would make distinct movements to depict distinct emotions with varying levels of energy. The stage itself may be sparse, because it is not as important as the expression of emotion and drama.
The stage is sparse not because of the lack of technology or funding, but because it leaves room for the actor themselves to fully express their internal thinking/feeling/emotions. Characters can cross hundreds of miles in a few steps or may take the whole stage to cross a supposed road. This representation looks “unreal” to a realistic-minded audience, but it is very genuine to a Chinese audience.
Summary (so far)
This crucial understanding of the concept of mo (the emotional revelation), and the way traditional Chinese drama depicts life and stories, informs how their modern works are also portrayed. Coming from a Western dramatic background, where realism and plot are the most important aspects of a work, it can be very confusing, right? Even Chinese scholars began to judge their own dramatic works through a Western lens.
How does this traditional background affect modern Chinese dramas and works? I think it still has a very large effect, even though much of Western ideals about dramatic works have been heavily integrated into modern Chinese dramas.

whispers abound in new york city these days, of a certain NATHALIE DU BOURBON. the 25 year old from america is a socialite/ballerina, and rather good at it, or so i’ve heard, considering she’s called the hellcat. she can be a haughty and vindictive, but she’s also assertive and debonair. — played by skyler samuels.
- THE BASICS.
full name: nathalie karina valentina du bourbon name meaning: nathalie ‘christmas day/christmas’, karina ‘dear little one’, valentina ‘healthy, strong, brave’ date of birth: february 15th, 2017 age: twenty five star sign: aquarius profession: socialite, influencer, professional ballerina for the american ballet theatre company loyalty: russia, house romanov, france, house du bourbon, the entente alignment: lawful evil  mbti: entj spoken languages: english, russian, french, german, spanish, italian mother’s name: anastasia romanovna - du bourbon father’s name: alexandre du bourbon ( deceased ) siblings, if any: francis ( sasha ) du bourbon, twenty one. height: 5’6” hair colour: blonde eye colour: blue
- BACKSTORY.
it took a certain type of person to be born into the media empire of the romanovna’s and take to it like a duck to water. born to the well known du bourbons and media darling anastasia, nathalie did more than grow up in the spotlight. she flourished in it. even before her birth, she was a topic of much speculation. news outlets and gossip pages all over the world trying to find concrete proof that alexandre and anastasia were expecting via surrogate, after their well documented struggles with conceiving. her birth was something rejoiced of in the entertainment circles, she was a blessing. a miracle. and in that moment, the most famous child in the world.
despite the constant attention, her parents took care to shield her as she grew up. not often shown to the public in order to give her the most normal upbringing they could - reinforced by her father’s need for it more than anything else. nathalie was only caught in glimpses on the popular reality show for years, each one giffed into oblivion by the internet.
nathalie had absolutely everything a child could ask for, there was nothing off limits for the first born du bourbon baby. and yet as much as she adored all the pretty things, the gifts that seemed to pour in all her life, it was attention she craved the most. not from the public, or any affirmation in her social life. she didn’t need those things. but her father. nathalie idolised alexandre, and made herself miserable everytime he went away. so much so that the little tot would make herself ill, working herself up into such an upset whenever alexandre couldn’t tuck her into bed that she would get horrible stomach aches. anastasia would try her best to calm her back down but it was only the sound of her father’s voice that would cease all the tears. though the tantrums stopped as she grew older, the sickly feeling of anxiety never seemed to ebb whenever alex left for a trip. though she loved her mother more than anything, she was a daddy’s girl through and through, and wanted nothing more than to make him proud. always showing off her latest top grade at school, making him watch the same dance routine over and over again until he swore it was perfect. she relied on that praise, his was the only one that mattered.
and so his loss when she was just twelve years old was nothing short of heartbreaking. he was torn from her life so brutally, nathalie had no way to cope. there was no one to turn to, to coax her feelings from inside that stubborn shell and ensure she did not let them fester inside. he had been the only one able to do that, just as he had been the only one to encourage her mother to share hers. both were lost in their grief, unable to talk about it, only internalising all that agony and finding separate outlets for their pain. which for nathalie had been ballet. both anastasia and nathalie stepped away from the spotlight following alexandre’s death. neither would appear on the show anymore, and anastasia left her post at vogue to spend more time at home with the children. nathalie retreating from the bright light that had been shone on her since birth in favour of privacy. where, instead, she pursued her passion of dance because she had no idea what else to do with the permanent ache in her chest.
so similar in many ways, it had given the mother and daughter who so often clashed something that was theirs, something they could share. anastasia had been taking nathalie to the ballet for as long as she could remember, and it would be their special time for just them. and nathalie fell in love with it. the way they floated so gracefully across the stage, the way they could hold themselves in the air so effortlessly without straining a single muscle. and so, from the age of three, nathalie had been enrolled by her mother in ballet lessons. it gave the contrary girl something to channel herself into. she’d always been a stubborn child, someone who needed to have things her way no matter the cost. spoiled, some might say. but dance was something she could make her own, and a way for her to express herself. something she struggled to do otherwise. the discipline that ballet gave her turned into her lifeline when she lost her father and needed something to force all that pain into something structured, something manageable. nathalie hated mess, and things she couldn’t understand, and her grief manifested in chaos far too destructive to keep contained had she not had ballet to push herself into.
that wasn’t to say she was stepping away from the glitz of celebrity life completely. far from it. nathalie breathed attention as she breathed air. especially with no father to dote on her any longer, and so it needed to be sought elsewhere despite her aversions to the public life. the du bourbon still cut an illusive figure, and very little is known of her. nathalie has never given an interview, and her presence online is slim if anything. still the world obsesses over her, the mystery surrounding nathalie only adding to the need to know more. she was worshipped on social media, brands were obsessed with her and fought to have her face for their products. the socialite could get a ticket to any party she wanted with just her name for an invite. but her passion did not lie in anything so easily to obtain as fame.
despite both her parents attending university ( in fact they met whilst studying in the uk ), nat saw no need for herself. instead choosing to focus on dance and eventually auditioned for the american ballet theatre, for which she was offered a spot. one of the most renowned companies in the world, and yet she was not satisfied. her first performance with the company had been a disaster, nathalie had glanced to the front row where her mother, brother and aunts and uncles all sat. and felt empty. there was no seat for alexandre, who had always supported her, told her she could do anything she wanted. he would never see her achieve her dream, never tell her he was proud of her. was he? would he have wanted something more for her? something more substantial?
she was granted a hiatus for her grief. delayed, some might say. if she were to continue dancing for the american ballet theatre, if she ever wanted that coveted principal dancer spot, she needed to get better. how could she be the best, if she herself was not? nathalie, following plenty urging, finally went along to grief counselling, attending a support group every thursday when her schedule allows. at the insistence of her counselor, nathalie attended family therapy sessions with anastasia to reconcile the distance that had grown between them since her father’s death. both women finally allowing themselves the chance to talk about all the feelings they had buried for so long, and bringing mother and daughter closer once more. nathalie still attends her grief group, and the odd counselling session. though she is far from over her grief, and still often struggles to express herself and allow others in, she is learning. eventually she rejoined her company and has been promoted from soloist to principal ballerina.
always wanting to strive for more, she has now set her sights higher, on the very best the world has to offer. the bolshoi ballet. confident and self assured as she may be, even she’s aware that she’s still a way off their level for now. but she’ll step on anyone she needs to, to reach her ultimate goal. luckily, her mother had long been friends with one of the greatest ballet dancers of her time, xiulan wen. nathalie had idolised her growing up. where her friends had posters of the latest teen heartthrob on their walls, nathalie had a signed photograph her mother had gotten her the first time she took her to the ballet. as she grew, she was taken under the older woman’s wing and was honoured to be trained by such an icon. she hopes with xiu’s help, she’ll be as great as her one day. a true prima.
though her relationships had always been more about convenience than any genuine feeling growing up, she realised at sixteen that she felt absolutely nothing towards men aside from a need to manipulate them to her personal needs. women, however, fascinated her. coming out had been easy, she’d never been more sure of anything. she was gay, and her family would just have to lump it. obviously, they were accepting of it, and though she never felt the need to publicly come out, she’s made no secret of it either. still, she’s happy to flirt with men if it means a free drink and something to play with. that, too, she had gotten from her mother.
although she’s practically a pop culture icon herself, she really doesn’t pay much attention to whatever’s popular right now. she sets trends afterall, doesn’t follow them. having always been a daddy’s girl, she inherited his taste in music and prefers the classics to whatever is in the charts. like alexandre, nathalie still has a need for some privacy, and so her new york apartment is a place of sanctuary from the press. the show has never filmed there, and no cameras are allowed in. in fact, she’s kept her address largely a secret from the public to avoid the paparazzi. despite her improvements, nathalie will never be ready to rejoin the spotlight in the same way as her family had once been.
nathalie still keeps up a good relationship with her family. her brother sasha especially. though she exudes ambivalence toward just about anything that doesn’t involve money, she does love her family. extended included. even if she doesn’t often show it. nat really doesn’t care about anything anyone has to say about her, bad press just rolls right off her. as long as she’s making money, and people are talking about her, she will remain unbothered. her mother’s cold nature had been perfected by her in recent years. wearing it like an icy shield from the world. everyone has always lived in the palm of her hand, and she can work a room like no other. nobody has ever told nathalie du bourbon no, and she doubts that anyone ever will.

Name origins for Super Mario Characters
Nintendo characters make their VR (arcade) debut with new Vive-driven Mario Kart
Bandai Namco revealed a virtual reality version of Mario Kart, Mario Kart Arcade GP VR, that is going to make the debut of its over a VR arcade the company is opening using Tokyo, Japan following month.
The game appears to draw the VR debut of 1 of Nintendo's flagship franchises, though it is crucial to observe it's licensed by Nintendo and also developed by Namco - the same as the non VR predecessor of its, Mario Kart Arcade GP.Not many specifics are still available in English about the game, however, it's listed about the arcade's site as running on HTC Vive headsets and also specially designed racing seats.
Nintendo has so far been publicly reticent around the promise of VR - last calendar year frontman Shigeru Miyamoto told investors that for VR in specific, we are continuing the homework of ours, along with looking into enhancement with a head to the way our present main products are intended to be played for a somewhat lengthy time period of time.
We're considering the possibilities of supplying an adventure which gives value when played for a little while, he continued. And the way to eradicate the issues of long-duration use.
When I found that out I did two things. For starters, I whipped out my message (yes, I ensure that it stays that real/nerdy that I still have an old NES connected in the room) of mine and then made positive I can still match the game at will. (I can. Childhood not wasted.)
Secondly, I started down a rabbit hole of reading through Mario internet sites and Articles and Wikis. In the procedure, I stumbled upon the etymologies of the brands of a few of the major players in the Mario universe. Therefore, in honor of the video game that changed the world, right here they are, presented in handy 11-item describe form.
Mario.
When Mario debuted in the arcade game "Donkey Kong", he was simply called Jumpman. (Which even is the generic brand regarding that Michael Jordan dispersed leg Nike logo. Two of the most celebrated icons ever both have generic versions of themselves known as Jumpman. But simply one has today reached the effort of simply being so effective that he shaved himself a Hitler mustache prior to filming a professional and not one person had the balls to correct him.)
In 1980, as the Nintendo of America crew brought in Jumpman to elevate him into a franchise-leading star (Hayden Christensen style), an individual discovered that he looked just like their Seattle office building's landlord... a fellow known as Mario Segale.
Mario Segale didn't get a dime for being the namesake of essentially the most well known video game character by chance, although he most likely is not absurdly concerned; in 1998 he sold the asphalt company of his for more than $60 million. (Or 600,000 increased lives.)
Luigi.
Luigi has among probably the weakest name origins of most of the mario characters list in the Mario universe (once again displaying precisely why, for life which is real, he would have a greater inferiority complex than Frank Stallone, Abel or even that third Manning brother).
"Luigi" is merely the product of a team of Japanese males trying to imagine an Italian label to enhance "Mario." Why was the Italian brand they went with? When they each moved from Japan to Seattle, the pizza spot nearest to the Nintendo headquarters referred to as Mario & Luigi's. (It has since gone out of business.)
Koopa.
Koopa is a transliterated variation of the Japanese name for the opponent turtles, "Kuppa." Stick with me right here -- kuppa is the Japanese phrase for a Korean dish known as gukbap. Basically it is a cup of soup with rice. From what I will inform it is totally not related to turtles, especially malicious ones.
In an interview, Mario's originator, Shigeru Miyamoto, said he was deciding between 3 different brands due to the race of evil turtles, every one of that were called after Korean foods. (The alternative two were yukhoe and bibimbap.) Which means among two things: (1) Miyamoto adores Korean food and needed to provide it with a tribute or (two) Miyamoto considers Koreans are evil and should be jumped on.
Wario.
I sort of skipped the debut of Wario -- he debuted in 1992, right around when I was hitting the generation where I was too awesome for cartoon y Nintendo games. (Me and my middle school buddies happened to be into Genesis only. I was again on Nintendo within four years.)
Appears his label operates both equally in Japanese and english; I kinda assumed the English manner but didn't know about the Japanese feature. In English, he is an evil, bizarro world mirror image of Mario. The "M" turns to become a "W" as well as Wario is produced. The name likewise functions in Japanese, wherever it's the variety of Mario as well as "warui," which implies "bad."
That's a pretty excellent scenario, since, as I covered extensively in the list 11 Worst Japanese-To-English Translations In Nintendo History, only a few language difference finesses back as well as forth quite efficiently.
Waluigi.
When I first read "Waluigi" I believed it was hilarious. While Wario became an all natural counterbalance to Mario, Waluigi felt so comically shoehorned (just tacking the "wa" prefix before Luigi) -- including a huge inside joke that somehow cleared every single bureaucratic phase and after that cracked the mainstream.
Well... in accordance with the Nintendo individuals, Waluigi isn't only a gloriously lazy decision or an inside joke become massive. They *say* it is based upon the Japanese phrase ijiwaru, which means "bad guy."
I do not understand. I feel like we'd have to cater for them much more than halfway to get that.
Toad.
Toad is designed to look as a mushroom (or maybe toadstool) because of the massive mushroom hat of his. It is a great thing the gaming systems debuted before the whole generation realized how to generate penis jokes.
Anyway, in Japan, he's named Kinopio, which is a combination of the term for mushroom ("kinoko") as well as the Japanese variant of Pinocchio ("pinokio"). Those blend being something along the collections of "A Real Mushroom Boy."
Goomba.
In Japanese, the men are known as kuribo, which results in "chestnut people." That is sensible because, ya know, if somebody requested you "what do chestnut individuals appear to be like?" you would most likely get to food just about similar to these heroes.
Once they had been brought in for the American version, the staff stuck with their Italian initiative and also referred to as them Goombas... primarily based off of the Italian "goombah," that colloquially will mean something as "my fellow Italian friend." It also sort of evokes the photo of low-level mafia criminals without too a lot of skills -- such as people's younger brothers as well as cousins who they'd to retain the services of or maybe mother would yell at them. That also applies to the Mario Bros. goombas.
Birdo.
Birdo has nothing to do with this first Japanese name. Generally there, he's called Kyasarin, that translates to "Catherine."
In the training manual for Super Mario Bros. two, where Birdo debuted, the character explanation of his reads: "Birdo considers he is a girl and additionally would like being named Birdetta."
What I think all this means? Nintendo shockingly decided to generate a character that struggles with the gender identity of his and referred to as him Catherine. In the event it was some time to show up to America, they have feet that are cold so they determined at the very last minute to call him Birdo, though he's a dinosaur. (And don't give me the "birds are descended from dinosaurs" pop paleontology series. Not shopping for that connection.) That way, we'd just know about the gender confusion of his if we look at the mechanical, and the Japanese had been confident Americans had been either way too lazy or illiterate to do it en masse.
Princess Toadstool/Peach.
When we all got introduced on the Princess, she was regarded as Princess Toadstool. I suppose this made perfect sense -- Mario was set in the Mushroom Kingdom, so why wouldn't its monarch be called Princess Toadstool. Them inbreeding blue bloods are always naming the children of theirs after the country.
No person appears to be certain why they went that guidance, nevertheless. In Japan, she was known as Princess Peach from day one. That name didn't debut here until 1993, when Yoshi's Safari came out for Super Nintendo. (By the way -- have you ever played Yoshi's Safari? In a bizarre twist it's a first-person shooter, the only woman in the entire Mario times past. It's like the equivalent of a country music superstar producing a weird rock album.)
Bowser.
In Japan, there's simply no Bowser. He is simply known as the King Koopa (or perhaps comparable variations, including Great Demon King Koopa). And so just where did Bowser come from?
During the import procedure, there was a concern that the American crowd would not see how the small turtles and big bad fellow could certainly be named Koopa. Thus a marketing team developed dozens of options for a title, they loved Bowser the very best, and also slapped it on him.
In Japan, he is nonetheless hardly ever called Bowser. Over here, the name of his is now very ubiquitous that he's actually supplanted Sha Na Na's Bowzer as America's many famous Bowser.
Donkey Kong.
This's a far more literal interpretation than you think. "Kong" is based off King Kong. "Donkey" is a family friendly way of calling him an ass. That's right: The label of his is an useful version of "Ass Ape."
Great Mario Bros. is a video game released for the family Computer and also Nintendo Entertainment System contained 1985. It shifted the gameplay away from the single-screen arcade predecessor of its, Mario Bros., in addition to instead highlighted side scrolling platformer concentrations. Although not the very first game on the Mario franchise, Super Mario Bros. is the most legendary, along with launched many set staples, coming from power ups, to timeless enemies like Goombas, to the standard idea of rescuing Princess Toadstool from King Koopa. Along with kicking above an entire series of Super Mario platformer video games, the untamed results of Super Mario Bros. made popular the genre as an entire, helped revive the gaming sector after the 1983 video game crash, as well as was largely the cause of the first good results of the NES, with which it was included a launch title. Until it was finally exceeded by Wii Sports, Super Mario Bros. was the best marketing videos game of all of time for nearly three years, with more than 40 million duplicates marketed overseas.

Field Guide Everything You Actually Need In Your Kitchen (1) added to Google Docs
Field Guide Everything You Actually Need In Your Kitchen (1)
How many times have you wanted to try out a recipe, only to realize that you don't have the right tool? On the flip side, how many lists have you seen that make you think you NEEEEDD this EXTREMELY expensive tool....and it sits in a cabinet forever?
So what do you actually need to have in a fully stocked kitchen? Simple is best when it comes to decking out a kitchen! And here's a little secret — most tools have interchangeable functions, and you can do a WHOLE lot with a little.
So here are the basic kitchen items you need, and when you'll use them!
RULE OF THUMB
Quantity
There are certain things that you're going to want to make sure you're well stocked up on. When it comes to serveware, it's best to buy in sets. Depending on your family size (think extended + close family) you'll want to make sure you've got 6, 8 or 12 of each item.
But, when it comes to your cookware, less is best! You don't need 6 spatulas, you need two quality spatulas — one in use and one to be cleaned! Keep that in mind as you're filling out your gadgets
Quality
It's better to get what's made well and will last you a long time then to have a tool go out of commission right when you need it! Look for things like stainless steel, silicone and quality wood and you'll be in good hands.
And while fine china is a-ok to be hand-washed, you'll want to make sure everything else is dishwasher safe!
EVERY DAY USE
Knives: A good set of knives can stay with you for a lifetime. You'll need a pairing knife for small, intricate situations, a chef's knife for nearly everything else, and table steak knives that you'll serve with. Ultimately, you can get a full set that contains all of these knives and stores them in a nice little handy holder.
Mixing Bowls: A must-have for every recipe. You'll want to go with a set bowls that are sturdy, come in a good range of sizing, and if you get glass bowls these can also double as serving bowls.
Measuring Utensils: The trick here is that you'll actually need 2 different types of measuring — cups and table & teaspoons! There are so many cute ones out there, but time over time you'll be better off with a solid stainless steel set that will last you year over year.
Cutting Board: Cutting boards protect your knives AND countertops, but choosing the material is really important. Wood cutting boards are so much prettier and very decorative, but when you're working with meat you're going to definitely want an extremely washable plastic cutting board on hand.
Spatulas: When you look up spatulas you get two things— the squeegee looking thing that you use to get the ~last~ drop of batter out of a bowl, and the flat surface tool to flip things. both are vital tools to help you around the kitchen and here we stress that QUALITY is KEY. You don't want a bunch of flimsy tools that break mid-bake, and even the "expensive" version of these tools aren't that expensive so this is an area where you can confidentially splurge and go for something good. Bonus, many times both of the aforementioned spatulas come in sets so you can get what you need all at once. Also don't overlook the tiny spatula, comes in very handy in contexts like peanut butter :)
Wooden Spoons: This is a dark horse power tool of cooking. For whatever reason, wooden spoons are old school necessities. There are some AMAZING old-world Italian marinara recipes that actually demand that you only use a wooden spoon to make the marinara. Plus, these are sturdy without hurting any of your pots and pans
Strainer: If you're a mac 'n cheese aficionado, you already know this. A good strainer can make the difference for whether or not you lose a good spoonful of noodles down the drain. You CAN get by with using a lid or any other "stopping" trick, but at the end of the day, this is a good investment because you can use it for all pastas, cleaning your produce and getting liquid out of all your accidentally watery endeavors.
There's a difference between a colander and the handheld sifters, and for that matter, you can even have a hand-held strainer. The sifters are typically used to make solid things finer (think flour and cocoa powder) whereas the colander and hand-held strainer are for liquids.
Storage Containers: Properly utilizing your leftovers is a game-changer in your budget and making your food last longer — but in order to do that you need to store your food properly! We HIGHLY recommend you invest in quality here. If you get oven and dishwasher safe glass storage containers, all of a sudden you prevented the use of 2 extra dishes and that is invaluable! They also have these really cool stasher bags that are freezer, microwave and boiling safe — and they're reusable! Cook once, eat twice, store everything properly. It's a game-changer.
Can Opener: This is something you never think about needing until you're trying to open a can of tomato sauce. So here's your friendly reminder to snag up a can opener of your own. If you're really feelin' fancy (or your lefthanded and totally over the negligent design of traditional can openers) they also have electric can openers! We'd classify that appliance as a splurge for cooking enthusiasts, but it's also just kind of cool to have honestly.
COOKTOP
Before we hop into types of cooktop pots and pans, let's talk about the material. There are two standard options: non-stick and stainless steel. Both have pros and cons.
Non-stick pans do what the name suggests and makes cleanup after dinner much easier, but you have to re-coat them periodically and once they start chipping, you have to toss them out because you don't want a bunch of bits and particles in your food. Also, sometimes the "stick" when cooking means flavor. You need a good stick to get your steaks crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
The pros use stainless steel because it lasts practically forever and when you use oils and heat properly, the stick is actually an advantage. Clean up requires a little more elbow grease, yes, but if you're thinking long term, stainless steel is the way to go.
Skillets: Skillets come in a variety of sizes and are a shallow, breathable vessel to cook vegetables, meats, pancakes and really everything else. You can get by with two GOOD skillets, and the size you want totally depends on how much you typically cook. Getting a lid is a major bonus because it helps with the cooking process and keeps your kitchen a bit cleaner.
Pots & Pans: Most any time you're dealing with liquids — reach for a pot! These have higher walls and keep the heat in, which allows you to fill them up a lot more! You should have a standard medium sized pot for everyday use, a smaller "saucepan," and a larger stockpot which is great for boiling pasta and making lots of yummy soup.
Dutch Ovens: A dutch oven is one of the most versatile cooking tools you can have. This bad boy does everything from making the perfect steaks and simmering delish soups, all the way down to crisping up a crumble in the oven. The heat up slow and low and retain heat for seemingly forever. These are a very large investment typically, so take your time in choosing one you want. You can choose between an enamel-covered version that is a true kitchen accent, or a cast-iron one that's sturdy, and you can even get a stainless steel one to match sets. Take good care of your dutch oven, and it will take good care of you.
Cast Iron: Technically cast iron is a material, not a product, and you can get many of the aforementioned products in the material of cast iron. But what we really want to call out here is the cast iron skillet. The cast-iron skillet is, again, for cooking enthusiasts. But its use is so versatile and effective that it can turn even a nuanced cook into an enthusiast
STOVE
Deep Casserole Dish: Casseroles are an art form, but this type of dish will certainly be used for many, many things. Think lasagnas, enchiladas, brownies — these things work overtime. You'll want a large rectangular one for big dishes, and a smaller squared one for desserts like brownies and rice crispies. Plus, different dish sizes ask for different cooking times, so you'll want a large and a small on hand to deal with those recipe scenarios!
Cookie Sheet: While these are most commonly used for cookies, you also use these sheets to roast veggies, whip up one-pan dinners and a whole slew of recipes can come from these sheet pans. You can also get them in varied sizes for portion control while cooking.
Muffin Tin: This is one of those things that you only need if you plan on cooking cupcakes, muffins and certain types of cookies. If you don't cook any of those, it's not a NEED. But, muffin tins are not too expensive and they're pretty handy to have on hand for the time when you do decide you want to make cupcakes. :)
Spring Form Pan: While making a cheesecake may not be in your weekly rotation, spring form pans are surprisingly handy! You can wait on this investment, but for any round form of baking (like cakes and cheesecakes) you're definitely going to want to get one of these.
Pizza Pan: Are you a frozen pizza connoisseur? You may want to look into a pizza pan! While you can set your pizza directly on the grates of an oven, you get a better crust cook and it's a lot cleaner when you have a tray. Plus, it prevents all the crumbs and cheese drippings from dirtying up your oven.
SERVE WEAR
First things first, when it comes to serve wear the first quantity is important! The traditional recommendation for entertaining is to have a full set of 12 on hand for whenever your guests pop in for dinner. If that seems ludacris,  just take inventory of your everyday needs and weigh them with your entertaining needs. If you're a family of 2 who sometimes have their friends over, 6 might be all you need. If you're a family of 4 and your extended family of 8 likes to come over for dinner, well then you'll want to make sure everyone has a plate!
Dinner Plates: These are a given! You gotta eat somewhere. It's nice but not ABSOLUTELY necessary when you're starting out to have a formal set and an everyday set of dinner plates. And if you really want to get fancy with it, seasonal sets of dishware are totally acceptable — like hello Christmas plates are the best. The idea of a formal dinner set is to
For your everyday set of dishes, you'll want to make sure they're dishwasher safe, durable and pretty versatile. Some of the nicer sets are not dishwasher safe, so be sure to check on that before making an all-out purchase.
Salad Plates: Truth be told, there are varying levels of sizes and plates and locations of where to place them. It's super confusing. But what we're really saying here is that you need a size smaller plate. A "salad plate" is slightly smaller than a dinner plate, and can be used for things like desserts, appetizer plates, your rolls, and yes — salad. There are actually specific plates for all of the aforementioned courses, but while you're building out your serve wear collection keep in mind you're going to want to match your dinner plates so plan accordingly!
Water Glasses: Also called tumblers, these are everyday glasses that hold things like water, tea, sodas and juices. Simple and sturdy is best here since you'll be using them pretty much every day!
Wine Glasses: Ok here's where you can get REALLY complicated. Having the proper wine glass per type of wine is considered a level of sophistication that is work aspiring to, but that all starts with knowing what kind of wine you like. If you're the kind of person that likes a good rose with pretty much anything are rarely vary off of that path — then you only need one type of wine glass. If, however, you like to pair a good earthy red with steak and a crisp white with seafood, then investing in the proper wine glass is totally worth it.
Coffee Mugs: While these are frequently a collecting opportunity, if you like to entertain it's really nice to have a matching or coordinating set of coffee mugs. But you can totally get by for a long, long time with just your favorite extra-large mug ready at hand.
GADGETS
Peelers: If you frequently cook root vegetables, a peeler is a must. You can actually peel using a knife, and some people actually find it easier to do that. But even so, it's not a heavy investment and it's good to have one on hand for when Thanksgiving suddenly rolls around and you've got a load of potatoes to peel,
Blenders: There are a whole SLEW of options in this category.
There are upright blenders that are good for large quantities and heavy-duty work. These typically allow for various settings like puree, smoothie and such...but unless you really know what you're doing you're just going to hit high speed and hope everything ends up together.
There are personal-sized "bullet" blenders that are more compact but SURPRISINGLY really effective.
If you're looking to "chop" and blend more than purify, then a food processor is what you're going to want.
And if you are in the business of making creamy soups, a handheld immersion blender is the only way to go.
Slicers: Disclaimer — a knife can also do this. But, if you're wanting uniform cuts you can look at things like mandolins or food processors.
Spiralizers: Zoodles are all the rage right now, and while yes you CAN get pre-made serving for $4.50, you can also buy an $.84 cent zucchini and spiralize it yourself. There are manual and "crank" versions and the one you choose will probably just depend on budget and how frequently you're going to need to use it!
Mixer: There are two mixe options — standing and handheld. The standing mixer is, quite honestly, a beautiful kitchen accessory. It's super pricy but it's pretty gorgeous. The handheld mixer is much less expensive and equally as effective. But if you're a big-time baker, you'll want to look into a standing mixer. Some recipes call for you to whip or mix things for up to like 5 minutes, and if you're frequently baking these types of recipes then standing mixers are pretty helpful.
Food Processor: We pulled food processors out on their own because they're so versatile. The food processer can do everything from kneading bread dough, pulsing + blending salsa, pureeing sauces, slicing veggies and grating cheese. If you splurge on one tool, this is a good option because of or versatile it is.
Coffee Machines: Like the wine glasses, choosing this appliance really depends on your level of enthusiasm for the liquid. Most people do perfectly well with pot coffee that makes bulk batches. Keurig's make really good personal-sized coffee. Nespresso is great to have if you're an espresso enthusiast but you don't want to use a full-on espresso machine. A pour-over is deemed to be the creme-de-la-creme of true coffee consumption. A french press is surprisingly easy to use and is arguably the prettiest of the options, and for both the french press and the pour-over you're going to need a teapot to boil up water. As we write this all out we realize this bullet point all on its own merits an entire blog post so we'll be back.
Slow Cookers: A crockpot or a pressure cooker are great tools to have on hand when you like to do "one and done" dinners. These two cooking methods allow you to dump everything in one container, let it simmer and serve it up with ease. If you're a beginner chef but looking for good flavors, you should look into these!
These basic kitchen tools will get you through most any recipe, so you can start off your kitchen cooking career off on the right foot. Happy cooking!

There is an old myth that says you should only eat raw oysters in months that contain the letter “r” (September through April). I personally feel pretty comfortable eating them year-round, but it is true that oysters, plus other bivalves like clams and mussels, are at their best in the colder months. We have 20 recipes to help you take advantage of peak season, from clam chowder two ways and oyster stew to French- and Thai-inspired steamed mussels.
One of the trickiest parts of working with bivalves is knowing out to prep them, so check out our guides to cleaning mussels, shucking oysters, and cryo-shucking clams.
Clams
Easy, Ultimate Clams Casino
Clams casino is often disappointingly bland—our recipe builds tons of flavor by cooking the clams’ juices down into a bacon-clam compound butter and topping the stuffed shells with bacon bread crumbs. Make sure to use coarse bread crumbs like panko because finer ones will take on a texture somewhere between wet sand and soggy bread pulp.

New England Clam Chowder
Many New England clam chowder recipes use a flour-based roux as a thickener, which can make the chowder unpleasantly heavy. We use potatoes instead, which gives the chowder a lighter (but still plenty rich) texture. Without a roux the chowder is going to break, but a quick trip to the blender will bring it back together.

Rhode Island Clam Chowder With White Wine and Bacon
[Photograph: Daniel Gritzer]
New England has the most famous clam chowder, but it’s not the only kind worth considering. Rhode Island clam chowder is made without any dairy, which lets the briny flavor of the clams shine. We have no problem making New England-style clam chowder with canned or frozen bivalves, but here you’re going to want the more intense flavor of live ones.

Miso Soup With Clams
While miso soup almost always starts with a dashi made with bonito flakes, this version from Manhattan’s EN Japanese Brasserie uses asari (Manila clams) instead. The brininess of the clams is perfectly complemented by the funky miso (a mix of light and dark) and vegetal kombu.

Halibut à la Nage With Clams, Dill, and White Wine
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Cooking fish à la nage is a versatile technique that involves poaching it in a flavorful broth. We have recipes featuring salmon and cod, but my favorite is this simple dish of halibut and clams cooked with white wine, fennel, and dill. As the clams open they release their juices, giving the broth a delicately briny flavor.

Spaghetti alle Vongole in Bianco
Spaghetti alle vongole is an Italian classic made with garlic, briny clams, white wine, and chili flakes. The dish can be made with or without tomatoes—here we are tackling the tomato-free (in bianco) version. One of our least favorite things about spaghetti alle vongole is dealing with the shells, so we shuck most of the clams before serving.

Korean Clam Sauce
[Photograph: Aki Kamozawa and H. Alexander Talbot]
Created as part of a Korean-inspired twist on spaghetti alle vongole, this clam sauce is made with gochujang, kimchi, nori, and fried onions, garlic, and shallots. The fried alliums are easy to find at Asian groceries, but you can also make them at home.

Pizza with Fresh Clams, Garlic, Mozzarella, Romano, and Basil
[Photograph: J. Kenji López-Alt]
Most of the famous New Haven pizzerias have started using pre-shucked clams, but at home we recommend using fresh ones—the clams will come out more tender and the pizza will have a better flavor. Beyond the clams we keep this pizza simple: mozzarella, Parmesan, garlic, basil, and chili flakes.

Oysters
Irish Stout Granita With Raw Oysters
I always think it’s a shame to cook oysters when they are so good raw. Oysters on the halfshell without any accoutrements are already just about perfect, but if you want to add something extra, try serving them with this malty stout granita. We like Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, but any good stout or porter is fine.

Grilled Oysters
If you’re going to cook your oysters, one of the simplest and most delicious methods is to grill them with compound butter—we’ve got parmesan-basil and kimchi varieties for you to try. The flavored butters don’t overpower the oysters, but they do soften their flavor enough to make this a great dish for oyster novices.

Oysters Rockefeller
Oysters Rockefeller is a classic appetizer made by baking oysters with wilted spinach, Parmesan cheese, garlic, butter, wine, and crunchy breadcrumbs. The secret ingredient is a drizzle of Pernod, which lends the dish a subtle anise aroma.

Oysters Florentine
Oysters Florentine keeps the spinach, Parmesan, white wine, and bread crumbs from oysters Rockefeller and adds cream for extra richness. The spinach topping can be made a day ahead and spooned onto the oysters just before cooking, making this a great dish for entertaining.

Classic Oyster Stew With Fennel
Despite the name, oyster stew is more of a soup—it only takes 20 minutes from start to finish and, thanks to the lack of any flour or pork fat, has a light, clean flavor. Don’t worry, though—whole milk and butter ensure that the dish is comfortingly rich.

Oyster Stuffing With Fennel, Tarragon, and Sausage
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Stuffing rarely makes appearances on the dinner table outside of Thanksgiving, but I see no reason not to eat it year-round. My favorite stuffings are made with oysters, which amp up the savoriness of the dish (much like fish sauce or anchovies) without making it overly fishy. Here we use oysters in a sausage stuffing flavored with fennel and tarragon.

Southern Cornbread Dressing With Oysters and Sausage
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Oysters are just as good in cornbread dressings as in white-bread stuffings. Don’t bother shucking fresh oysters for these two recipes—once you’ve mixed them with the bread, sausage, fennel, and other ingredients you won’t be able to taste the difference between fresh oysters and the pre-shucked ones you find in pop-top cans.

Mussels
The Best Moules Marinières (Sailor-Style Mussels)
Steamed mussels are an under-appreciated weeknight dinner—they are fast, inexpensive, and versatile. My favorite preparation is moules marinières, which uses a cider-based broth thickened with butter (the more traditional option) or garlicky aioli (not traditional but totally delicious). Don’t forget to pick up a loaf of crusty bread to dip into the broth.

Steamed Mussels With Thai-Style Coconut-Curry Broth
[Photograph: J. Kenji López-Alt]
As a testament to the versatility of steamed mussels, this recipe moves to the other side of the world for inspiration. The technique is basically the same, but we make the broth with coconut milk and flavor it with fish sauce, sliced chilies, brown sugar, and homemade curry paste.
Get the recipe for Steamed Mussels With Thai-Style Coconut-Curry Broth »
Mussels With Fennel-Saffron Broth
Moving back to France, this recipe is inspired by the Provençal stew bouillabaisse. We incorporate anise flavors three ways: fresh fennel, fennel-flavored dry salami, and a shot of Pernod. Don’t skip the saffron—I know it’s expensive, but you only need a pinch and it adds a wonderful complexity to the dish.
Get the recipe for Mussels With Fennel-Saffron Broth »
Mussels With Chard and Tomatoes
The only trouble with serving steamed mussels as a dinner is that it’s a pretty light meal unless you eat a lot of bread (which, to be fair, I am happy to do).

Mussels With Chard and Tomatoes
The only trouble with serving steamed mussels as a dinner is that it’s a pretty light meal unless you eat a lot of bread (which, to be fair, I am happy to do). This recipe adds bulk without turning to carbs by cooking the mussels with peppers, chard, and tomato. If you’re into spice, then a dash of cayenne or chili flakes would be very much at home here.

TV I Liked in 2017
Every year I reflect on the pop culture I enjoyed and put it in some sort of order.
It’s been about ten years(!) since I last made TV picks, mostly because around that time my list ended up just being a repeating cycle of LOST, The Office and 30 Rock. But now that prestige TV has blown up with streaming services and providers have embraced the British model of shorter seasons, there’s a lot more quality and diversity out there. Since several conversations with friends this holiday season revolved around what shows they should be watching, I figured I’d throw TV back into the mix. I don’t have Hulu or Amazon Prime (and it’s frankly impossible to stay current with everything anyway), so this list is no definitive ranking of the best programming out there – just my favorites from the year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10 (tie). Glow: Season 1 (Netflix), Big Little Lies (HBO)
These two very different female-led shows both tackle issues of empowerment and strength in a male-dominated world. Glow is a comedic look at the creation of a basic cable women’s wrestling league in the 80s, while Big Little Lies is a dramatic book adaptation about a group of mothers grappling with elementary school intrigue, which evolves into a timely exploration of domestic abuse. The performances are perfect all around and each series leads to a satisfying conclusion (although I do have to question the precociousness of the kids in Big Little Lies, which seems more like marketing than reality – there’s no way they’d have such idiosyncratically refined musical knowledge at that age, right?)
Tumblr media
 9. Crashing: Season 1 (HBO)
Pete Holmes’ autobiographical show about becoming a standup comedian after losing his marriage may be a somewhat familiar story at this point, but his guileless persona and goofy humor are a winning combination and reason to watch. As Pete discovers a new form of happiness in the midst of his greatest personal trauma, Crashing is a testament that hope is never truly lost.
Tumblr media
 8. Mindhunter: Season 1 (Netflix)
An adaptation of a nonfiction book detailing the early days of criminal profiling at the FBI, Mindhunter deals with the darkest aspects of human nature in its quest to understand serial killers. A stellar cast led by Jonathan Groff puts us at the forefront of a new science but not without showing the toll such work takes on the personal lives of those involved. David Fincher, one of my favorite directors, helms several episodes of this series, which echoes of one of his best films, Zodiac.
Tumblr media
 7. Fargo: Season 3 (FX)
While Season 2 remains the pinnacle of this anthology series inspired by the classic Coen Brothers film, Season 3 was another riveting ride of tension and payoff. Ewan McGregor plays twin brothers at odds with one another and, as always in this universe, a series of petty crimes ends up spiraling out of control until just desserts are served. David Thewlis oozes even more evil here than in Wonder Woman and both Carrie Coon (as the season’s moral center) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (as definitely not that) are tremendous as well.
Tumblr media
 6. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Season 3 (Netflix)
At this point in its run, I think we’re all taking Kimmy Schmidt for granted; I’ve spoken to several people who either started Season 3 and never finished or didn’t even begin it. The show, however, remains one of the best comedies around, continuing the irreverence, wit and absurdity of 30 Rock and featuring a brilliant primary cast comprised of nary a single straight white man. (Females are strong as hell, dammit!) Among this year’s many highlights: Daveed Diggs as Kimmy’s college classmate Perry, Titus recording the horrible novelty song “Boobs In California” and Kimmy applying for her dream job as a Crossing Guard.
Tumblr media
 5. A Series of Unfortunate Events: Season 1 (Netflix)
Working with author Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler), director Barry Sonnenfeld does a phenomenal job building the unique world of the Baudelaire siblings. I have never read the source material for comparison, but the series’ decision to give each book two episodes to breathe allows everything – the acting, the production design, the dialogue – to really shine. It’s clear that this project is a labor of love for all involved, and I am eagerly awaiting the next set of episodes in March.
Tumblr media
 4. Stranger Things 2 (Netflix)
The second season of Stranger Things was even more impressive and enthralling than the first, primarily through the expansion of the show’s world with more locations. This allowed for interesting combinations of characters as they embarked on different quests and made everyone’s reunion at the season’s climax even more powerful. No series this year so deftly handled episode-ending cliffhangers (even if streaming meant you could just keep watching if you wanted).
Tumblr media
3. Legion: Season 1 (FX)
While the superhero genre has long appealed to me, I am not really an X-Men person: I have an awareness of the roster and have seen most of the movies, but they’ve never been a draw. Thus, I had little interest in Legion, an FX series based on tertiary X-Men characters but separate from the films. I decided to give the premiere a try, based mainly on creator Noah Hawley’s track record with the TV adaptation of Fargo, and I was hooked. Legion really is unlike anything else on TV – boldly experimental and impressionistic. Visually, it’s art: an examination of the comic as pop object, using color, framing and design to build a world out-of-time yet recognizable. Storywise, it delves into superheroic tropes of identity & purpose and good vs evil, but refracts them through the lenses of psychology and psychosis. Plus, with a cast including Dan Stevens, Jemaine Clement and Aubrey Plaza, how could you go wrong?
Tumblr media
2. Master Of None: Season 2 (Netflix)
I enjoyed the first season of Aziz Ansari’s examination of modern relationships, but Season 2 blows things wide open, redefining what a TV series can be. From a black & white premiere inspired by classic Italian cinema to the decades-spanning look at life for a queer woman of color that is “Thanksgiving” to “New York, I Love You,” a remarkable episode that pivots away from the central cast to focus on the lives of three members of the service industry, the season is bold, inclusive and affecting. It also still offers hilarious and perceptive observations on modern life, like the depressingly accurate online dating-centered “First Date.” Allora!
Tumblr media
1. The Good Place: Seasons 1-2 (NBC)
Here’s the thing: when I first saw ads for NBC’s The Good Place, I wasn’t remotely interested. It was only the behind-the-scenes pedigree (creator Michael Schur was involved with the Office, Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine) that piqued my curiosity. Turns out, the show is both hilarious and brilliant. I’ve gained an appreciation for the comic genius of Ted Danson I never had before, and the rest of the cast is equally entertaining. 2017 contained the game-changing finale of Season 1 and the format-busting first half of Season 2, either of which would’ve have netted my number 1 slot but taken together left no contest. (Season 1 is streaming on Netflix and you can catch up with Season 2 On-Demand)

Field Guide Everything You Actually Need In Your Kitchen added to Google Docs
Field Guide Everything You Actually Need In Your Kitchen

I is for Italy
I know that choosing Italy to represent ‘I’ in this project seems like a bit of a cop-out.   However, I live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world and I don’t explore it as much as I should, so I am using this project as an impetus.
Italy is picturesque and full of places famous for their history. Without even breaking a sweat, I can come up with a pretty impressive list of places that are within a few hours of where I live: Bologna, Modena, Venice, Florence, Parma, Genova, Cinqueterra, Italian Lakes, Milan… and those are just the most well known.
I love visiting these places that are so important culturally and historically.  But even more than that, I really enjoy the less touristy side of Italy. For this reason, I am obsessed with sagras.  A sagra is a local festival held in small towns.  Each sagra focuses on a different food, usually one that is local to the region.   Near my home town, this means that we have sagras for rice, gorgonzola, pumpkins, red onions, frogs and asparagus.
During the few days of the sagra, several long tables, seating 40 or so people, fill the main piazza. At the till, the customer selects from the limited menu comprised of dishes that focus on the featured ingredient; these meals are prepared in enormous pots and bowls by local cooks.
Sagras are not flashy food festivals, but just an entire small town working together to raise some money for local projects, as well as creating a sense of community or occasion.  This is the main reason I love sagras – there is nothing pretentious about them.
Sagra 1 – Asparagus, Cilvegna
It is a gorgeous sunny day in May.  On the menu today, asparagus risotto and pizza with grilled asparagus.
Asparagus risotto
Risotto has a bad reputation for being tricky to cook.  It is actually an incredibly versatile dish that is hard to mess up, if you follow a few basic rules.
1.  The liquid you add to the rice should be hot.
2.  Add liquid about a half cup at a time.
3.  Stir.  You should not stir constantly and vigorously, but you need to stir pretty often.
4.  Serve it immediately when it gets to the texture you like.
I don’t use an actual recipe, so I have just included instructions my way.  Unlike traditional rice cooking, you add water as you go so the liquid measurement is not as critical.  As with any meal, the better the ingredients, the better the final result.
 1 shallot, finely chopped
butter
2 handfuls Arborio rice
2 glasses of dry white wine (one for me, one for the rice)
4 or so cups of good broth
7 or so stalks of asparagus, cut into pieces the size of a finger joint.
Grated parmesan
In the medium saucepan, heat up the broth.  Keep it on a medium heat as you cook.
In the large saucepan, put the butter, rice and diced shallot in and cook until the rice and onion are transparent.  Add wine first and stir until the rice has absorbed it, then put in  broth a half cupful at a time, stirring until it is almost absorbed before adding another half cup.  About 15 minutes into the rice cooking process, I throw the asparagus bits into the broth to cook there for 5 or so minutes.  (Don’t add raw veggies to the rice in a risotto as they cool the rice down too much. Cook them first and add them in towards the end.)
On the last addition of broth, be sure you scoop up any asparagus bits and add them in.
Serve immediately.
Sagra 2 – Riso, Bagna Cauda and Bollito, Mede
Guest starring: Ally
We arrive very early, to the dulcet tones of Adriana and the Flash Melody still in rehearsals, several hours before they will officially kick off.  Adriana embodies the best of sagra entertainment – her unnaturally tinged ginger mullet coupled with her painted on face make-up give her the air of a Ukrainian wedding singer.
The rice on offer is a risotto (no surprises there).  Ally takes the asparagus risotto, which comes with fresh peas and chives. (To make this risotto, fresh peas can be added to the broth - as in the previous recipe - a few minutes after the asparagus.  Finish with a few chopped chives.)
We both steer clear of the bollito which is a beef stew incorporating parts of the animal that have names – tongue, hoof, etc.  (Usually, most people are just comfortable with ‘meat’ rather than being able to identify specific body parts.  That’s never really a good sign…)
I go for the bagna cauda, which is hot anchovy dip.  Even though I am a vegetarian, I do make the very odd exception for fish; bagna cauda is a dish we used to have quite often when I was a child so I took the plunge.  When I was in elementary school, two of my favourite dishes were bagna cauda and steamed spinach with red wine vinegar.  I am sure these would have seemed like pretty eccentric choices to the rest of my hotdog-loving, burger-eating classmates.
There are different types of bagna cauda, some involving milk or cream.  Sometimes the sauce is turned into a sort of dressing and drizzled over a raw vegetable salad, rather than served as a dipping sauce. Either way, this is a rich, oily, tasty dip that will umami your head off. Really, it is fantastic, but a little can go a long way.  This recipe makes way too much for even two people to share… better 6-12. It comes from Epicurious.  If you want a creamy bagna cauda, Anotnio Carluccio has a good one.
Bagna cauda, served with assorted vegetables: carrot, radish, radicchio, endive, raw fennel, bell pepper, cooked cauliflower/potato, cucumber… even with bread.
¾ cup olive oil
6 tablespoons
12 large anchovy fillets
6 large garlic cloves
Blend oil, butter, anchovies and garlic in processor until smooth. Transfer oil mixture to heavy medium saucepan. Cook over low heat 15 minutes, stirring, occasionally. (Sauce will separate.) Season with salt and pepper.  Serve in small ramekins for individual servings or in a central chafing dish for a shared dipping experience.
As sort of an antidote to the umamirama that was the bagna cauda, we indulged in dessert.  The dessert was a Torta di latte, also known as a Torta paesana.  It is basically a fancy Italian take on a bread and butter pudding.
The version we had was ok, but was a bit insipid.  It also contained cooked raisins.  Though they are traditional in this dish, I detest cooked raisins as they get bloated and remind me of the bodies that turn up in cop shows that have been in rivers or lakes for a few weeks.  Ick.
So, needless to say, my version does not include any raisins.  The more traditional version of this cake also mixes chocolate powder directly into the dough mixture so the whole cake is chocolate.  I prefer to have the chocolate in bits, but if you want to mix the powder in, knock yourself out.  Also, pine nuts are usually added to this cake, but I prefer not to.  This base is super customisable, so feel free to experiment.  I could see this being made with Pan d’oro or pannettone, adding in bits of fruit, biscuits and even a dash of amaretto or Gran Marnier.
 Torta di Latte
300 g bread cubes (White bread, baguettes or sweet bread are best for this)
120 g amaretti (gingersnaps could also be used)
1 litre milk
2 medium eggs
120 g granulated sugar
zest of one orange
35 grams dark chocolate crushed or chopped into small pieces
  1.  Heat up milk, without letting it boil.
2.  Put bread cubes into a bowl, with orange zest.
3.  Pour warm milk over the bread, stirring it to coat all the bread and then cover it with plastic wrap until the milk has softened all bread.
4.  While this is going on, break up chocolate bar. Crush biscuits to a fine powder.
5.  Mix the powder into the bread mixture.  By this point, the bread mixture should be soft enough that when you mix it, it breaks down to a gloop.
6.  Mix the eggs in a small bowl.  Add to the mixture.
7.  Add in sugar.
 Bake in a 24cm round pan at 180 C for 50-60 minutes.
    Sagra 3 – Gnocchi, Garlasco
This sagra was a little bit disappointing as it was dripping down with rain and there were no long benches to eat at.  There were two types of gnocchi available: with ragu or pesto.  I chose the pesto.
I do not usually make gnocchi as it is a little finicky.  The best homemade gnocchi I ever had were when Rafa and Gavin made it at my house, which was fantastic.  However, I don’t really feel that the hours of cooking and shaping the pasta are worth it in the final product.  Here in Italy at least, you can get really good fresh gnocchi pretty easily and then use the 5 hours you save to read a book, take a bike ride or watch a couple of films.
Still, it is an interesting project to make gnocchi and there is a real sense of satisfaction when you are done.
Pesto, on the other hand, can be made very easily and is always worth it. Fresh homemade pesto doesn’t keep all that well, so it is best to finish whatever quantity you’ve made in one sitting.
 Pesto recipe
2 generous handfuls of fresh basil
half a cup of olive oil
1 ½ - 2 handfuls of grated parmesan (USE GOOD PARMESAN!)
2 cloves garlic
1 dessert spoon of pine nuts
a few pinches salt
Grind this up with a mortar and pestle.  Add more basil/cheese/pine nuts/oil/salt to taste.  Let it sit for an hour or so to give the lovely flavours time to mix together.
 Sagra 4
Cherry festival Sant’ Olcese
The first and second of June were a holiday and so to take advantage of the long weekend (and hit as many sagras as possible), I drove to down to Tuscany to visit Nicky and Tom, stopping along the way.
Sant’Olcese is a small village tucked in the mountains above Genoa.  Cars were parked along the twisty mountain road for a few kilometres leading up to the town.  The road opened up to the town square where a few hundred runners of all ages were preparing for the cherry run, a 5 km race down and then up the mountain road.  A few of the runners looked as though they were taking the event seriously, while the rest were clusters of friends and families who spent the few moments before the starter’s orders snapping selfies.
The purchase of the food was a slick operation – orders were entered on the computer and we were then issued a printed receipt; this hit a snag when a electricity was fused by the electric crepe pan, toaster oven and fondue set the woman at the gluten-free booth had plugged in on the same extension as the computer and printer.
The hall was decorated with cardboard cherries that hung from the ceiling.  The local children had been drafted into do the serving and were collecting chits from everyone.  The couple across the table were locals in their 70s and extremely friendly.  They kept encouraging the young servers and complimenting them on how efficient and organised they were. This was even after one of the younger boys, an obvious first timer, forgot to bring the woman’s meal.  “He’s doing a good job for a little boy... Bravo, ragazzo!”
I had cherry ravioli which were that lovely mix of sweet and savoury that make ravioli di zucca so fantastic.  However, unlike ravioli di zucca (which are served with butter and sage), these ravioli had the tiniest bit of ginger in the butter.  They were sublime.
The cherry crostata was also very nice, though it is hard in my opinion to elevate the simple jam tart to anything extraordinary. There was also a cheese board that featured sour cherry preserves, an excellent contrast of the salty cheese with the sweet tang of the fruit.
I am passing on a link for  the cherry crostata.  With the crostata, there is no shame in using store bought readymade pastry.
 Sagra 5
Cherry festival Lari
Eating sun-warmed cherries in the Tuscan sun is not a bad way to spend an afternoon.  Lari is small town in the Tuscan hills, with a surprisingly large castle perched in the centre.  The base of the castle walls form one side of the central piazza – it was there the various market stalls were set up.  There were cherry fritters, cherry sangria, cherry jams and jellies on offer, as well as stand after stand of fresh cherries.
After purchasing a bag of fresh cherries, I wandered up to the castle and sat in the sun and looked out over the terracotta roof tiles.
Italy is pretty scenic.
Back in the central square, I had a taste of local cherry liquor and tried a ridiculously rich dessert – thick dark melted chocolate topped with cherry compote.  It was extremely messy but incredibly tasty – a sort of concentrated black forest gateau.
Chocolate and cherry compote (Recipe from Bon appétit)
4 1/2 cups pitted fresh (or frozen, thawed) Bing cherries (about 20 ounces)
1 cup brandy or orange juice
1/2 cup sugar
 1. Bring all ingredients to a boil in a large heavy saucepan; reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer until cherries are softened and start to release juices, about 10 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer cherries to a medium heatproof bowl.
2. Simmer juices until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, 15–20 minutes. Pour reduced syrup over cherries. Serve warm.
Sagra 6
Best sagra ever. San Miniato is a small town in the middle of nowhere.  And the sagra was actually held in a small village 12 km outside the small town in the middle of nowehere.  It is one of those places where the streets have no name... my navigator just shrugged and said “Boh?!” rather than actually giving directions.
However, it was the most sagrissima of all sagras.  Not only was there a huge all-weather tent, the entire town had turned out to staff the sagra.  The menu was fantastic and varied, and the food was amazing. Though I would have loved to try the zucchini blossom lasagne,  I ordered penne al fiore di zucchini and fried zucchini blossoms which are just about my favourite thing in the world.  The penne was all vegetarian, but the zucchini blossoms were stuffed with ricotta and various meat flavourings: one had an anchovy, one a piece of sausage and the last had a piece of pancetta.  They were delivered freshly made and were absolutely delectable. Though I am a vegetarian, I made an exception for these and it was totally worth it.
  Penne al fiore di zucchini
Boil water for pasta.
While the water is heating up, finely chop 3 stalks of celery, 2 shallots and a carrot.  Brown lightly in a few big glugs of oil.
By now, the water should be boiling – put penne in water and cook until al dente.
Add half a cup of stock to the vegetables and let it reduce.  Put in a good squeeze of lemon.
Thinly chop baby zucchini and flowers and tear up several basil leaves.
Add these to the pan, coat, and remove from heat. I sometimes add in grated zucchini as well at that point, depending on how many zucchini I have in the garden.
Mix pasta and sauce together.  Season to taste.  Add a bit of lemon zest, if desired.  It is very good just like this, but you can also put on parmesan or even mix in ricotta at this point to make it a creamier sauce.
  Fried zucchini blossoms
Whisk together equal parts white flour and sparkling water and season with salt.
For stuffing, mix ricotta, chopped zucchini blossoms, lemon zest and basil.
Coat in batter and fry until golden.
Sagra 7
The line is absurdly long and sun beats down.  Tempers are fraying at the Breme sagra as the cashiers work with a slowness that seems antagonistic.  I have purchased a pint of beer to have with my meal, but end up drinking it all whilst waiting in line.  The aggressive sun, the hunger and the pint of beer leave me feeling sticky and woozy – by the time I get to cashier to place my order, I no longer am able to judge what a reasonable amount of food is.  I order two red onion salads and a piece of frittata, uncertain as to whether that will be enough.  Let me just be clear that between these three dishes, I am already eating at least 3 red onions.  I decide against ordering the onion soup.
The red onions of Breme are not the acrid red onions that I am used to in Greek salads and guacamole.  These are intensely sweet, though not so sweet that they work in puddings, despite the fact that red onion ice cream is available... and horrific.  There is also carmellised red onion pizza available, but I had decided to try as many dishes as possible and though the pizza would no doubt be fantastic, it would be a bridge too far.
Red onions are not usually used as a the basis of a salad or a side dish as they are a bit harsh in quantity, but these mild onions are really suited to eat in larger quantities. The salads come in two types: those based on cooked onions and those composed primarily of raw onions.
Both are dressed with simple vinaigrette.
Raw onion salad
Roughly chop sweet red onions.  Add in white beans and good tuna. Serve with vinaigrette, the sort you would use on non-mayo coleslaw.  A little bit of sweetness doesn’t hurt this.
 Cooked onion salad
Roughly chop sweet red onions. Poach in a light white wine until softened, but al dente.  Drain onions and conserve some of the liquid.  Toss in capers, olives and good tuna.  Use the liquid in place of the vinegar in vinaigrette.
 Sagra 8
Pumpkin – Dorno
Markets stalls are pushed together, filled with regional produce.  Jars of jam, locally made sausage, cheeses from a small nearby dairy, chocolates from the next town over and flavoured liquors all beautiful displayed on the kiosks that line the streets.  In the centre of the town, there is a huge tent, the sort used for outdoor weddings.  This is where the bistrot menú is served, a fancier affair than the fare available at the plastic tables outside.  Here, two types of pumpkin risotto are on offer, along with pumpkin lasagna.  To accompany, frosty pints of pumpkin beer are available with tubs of pumpkin tiramisú to follow.
On one of the evenings, pumpkin pizza is available, with roasted pumpkin, caramelised red onions and goat’s cheese.
This is my third year at the sagra.  It is my favourite sagra as it is in the town adjoining mine as well as being focused on one of my preferred foods.  I am here with Katy and Valeria, and even though it is late October, the sun is shining as we drink our beer and eat our superb food from plastic plates.  The quality of the food belies the makeshift camp kitchen from which it emerges.     The pumpkin tiramisú is especially surprising as it is an unusual idea, but really succeeds in its execution.  Sometimes at sagras, the food can be almost gimmick-y as the star ingredient is shoehorned into each course (cherry risotto, red onion ice cream) but the tiramisú is genuinely tasty.
In case the meal didn’t leave us sick of the sight of pumpkin, there are plenty of pumpkin based products on show at the stalls.  I pick up fresh pasta – pumpkin ravioli.  These are to be boiled very briefly until they float to the top of water and then served with a few sage leaves that have been cooked in butter until they are crispy and the butter is slightly browned.
Below this post, there is a link for a  pumpkin tiramisu recipe from Food and Wine.  Use amaretti biscuits instead of ladyfingers to recreate the Dorno recipe.
Sagra 9
Mushroom – Cilivegna
A return to the first town… Cilivegna is less quaint in the cold grey autumn air, and a sprinkling of rain makes me grateful that the sagra takes place entirely indoors, in huge arched tents.  The featured item is chiodini mushrooms – a step up from button mushrooms, but not the stars of the mushroom family by any means.  There are mushrooms preserved in oil to start, mushroom and sausage risottos, mushroom and sausage served with polenta for main, mushroom and sausage served on their own… basically, it as much a sausage fest as a mushroom sagra. Mercifully, the organisers haven’t tried to force mushrooms into the dessert course.  I am sure even Heston Blumenthal couldn’t make mushroom and sausage into an acceptable sweet.
The only two vegetarian options are mushrooms preserved in oil for starters and mushrooms on polenta for main. I am seated at a long table with a plasticificated red and white checked table cloth and bread in a wicker basket.   To complete the set dressing for a 1980’s mob movie, there is a crooner singing slow emotional ballads – perfect music for playing behind a montage of gangland killings.  The mushrooms in oil are fantastic.  There is just the smallest hit of chili and a boatload of garlic and the oil is perfect for mopping up with the slightly spongy bread.  By the time the main meal arrives, I have eaten enough and so finishing the polenta and mushroom mountain on the plate becomes an exercise in endurance. I try to eat through the pain, but the mushroom topping in this instance is not worth it.  It is good, but it would be a lot better with some sausage…
And so the sagra saga is complete.  It was a wonderful way to see the country, have some great food and spend time with friends.  Travelling around one of the most beautiful countries in the world and eating fantastic food with wonderful people... more please.

1. Balody Model 16012 Bowser Koopa King Anime
Balody Model 16012 Bowser Koopa King Animes
Bowser is portrayed as the “King of the Koopas”, anthropomorphic turtles that inhabit the world of the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser differs greatly from the rest of the Koopa clan, which consists mainly of bipedal tortoises. He is characterized by a large, spiked turtle shell, horns, a draconic muzzle, razor-sharp fangs, taloned fingers, three clawed toes on each foot, and a shock of red hair.
He is physically endowed with immense strength, is nearly indestructible, and can breathe fire. He can also jump surprisingly high for his large size, although his speed and agility are most of the time lacking. He is also accomplished in black magic, thanks to which he can teleport himself or summon objects, fly, generate a huge amount of electricity, use telekinesis or metamorphose.
Bowser aspires to take over the Mushroom Kingdom and merge it with his own realm. He is infatuated with Princess Peach, and routinely kidnaps her as part of his plans for domination. Sometimes, he kidnaps Peach simply to lure Mario into a trap, but occasionally he hopes to marry her.

2. Balody Model 16003 Super Mario
Balody Model 16003 Super Mario
Mario debuted as “Jumpman” in the arcade game Donkey Kong on July 9, 1981. He is shown to be a carpenter and has a pet ape called Donkey Kong. The carpenter mistreats the ape and Donkey Kong escapes to kidnap Jumpman’s girlfriend, originally known as the Lady, but later named Pauline. The player must take the role of Jumpman and rescue the girl.
Jumpman was later renamed “Mario” in the 1982 arcade game Donkey Kong Junior, the only game in which he has been portrayed as an antagonist. In the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros., Mario and his younger brother Luigi are portrayed as Italian-American plumbers who have to defeat creatures that have been coming from the sewers below New York City.
In Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Mario saves Princess Toadstool (later known as Princess Peach) of the Mushroom Kingdom from King Koopa. To save Princess Toadstool, Mario conquers the eight worlds of the Mushroom Kingdom by going to the castle in each to defeat a minion of King Koopa. To reach each castle, Mario battles through three sub-worlds by defeating King Koopa’s henchmen. If Mario successfully fights his way through the castle and defeats the minion, he frees a Mushroom Retainer.[citation needed] Inside the eighth castle, Mario has a final fight with King Koopa and frees Princess Toadstool. In Super Mario Bros. 2, the player can choose between Mario, Luigi, Toad, or Princess Peach. Each character possesses unique abilities (Luigi has the stronger jumping ability, Toad can dig the fastest, and Peach can float), with Mario being the most well-rounded. In Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario quests to save the rulers of seven kingdoms from Bowser and his children, the Koopalings, and Mario travels across eight worlds to restore order to the Mushroom World and to rescue Princess Peach. Mario is introduced to new power-ups that augment his abilities.

3. Balody Model 16047 Stitch
Balody Model 16047 Stitch
Stitch (also known by his species name/”birth” name Experiment 626, pronounced “six-two-six”) is a fictional character in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch franchise. An illegally-made, genetically-engineered, extraterrestrial lifeform resembling a blue koala, he is one of the franchise’s two title characters, alongside his adopter and best friend Lilo Pelekai, and its primary protagonist. Stitch was created by Lilo & Stitch co-writer and co-director Chris Sanders, who also voices him in all Western-produced media that he appears in, while Ben Diskin voices the character in the English versions of the Eastern-produced television series Stitch! and Stitch & Ai.
In the franchise’s chronology, he was originally created by Dr. Jumba Jookiba to cause chaos across the galaxy. Stitch is marked by his mischievous behavior, which endeared him to Lilo, who adopted him as her “dog”. Through Lilo’s beliefs in the Hawaiian concept of ʻohana, meaning family, Stitch developed from an uncaring, destructive creature to a loving, more self-conscious being who enjoys the company of his adoptive family on Earth. He became a firm believer of the ʻohana concept, and with the help of Lilo applied it to reform Jumba’s 625 prior experiments, nearly all of whom Stitch treats as his “cousins”.

4. Balody Model 16051/16052 Zootopia
Balody Model 16051/16052 Zootopia
In a world populated by anthropomorphic mammals, rabbit Judy Hopps from rural Bunnyburrow fulfills her childhood dream of becoming a police officer in urban Zootopia. Despite being the academy valedictorian, Judy is delegated to parking duty by Chief Bogo, who doubts her potential because she is a rabbit. On her first day, she is hustled by a con artist fox duo, Nick Wilde and Finnick.
Judy abandons parking duty to arrest Duke Weaselton, a weasel who stole a bag of crocus bulbs known as Midnicampum holicithias. Bogo reprimands her, but an otter named Mrs. Otterton enters Bogo’s office pleading for someone to find her husband Emmitt, one of fourteen predators who is
missing. When Judy volunteers and Assistant Mayor Dawn Bellwether praises the assignment, Bogo has no choice but to let Judy take the case. He gives her 48 hours to find Emmitt Otterton on the condition that if she fails, she resigns.
Judy blackmails Nick into assisting her by covertly recording his confession to tax evasion, having ascertained from the ‘last-sighting’ photo of Otterton that Nick was the last to see him. They track Otterton to a limousine owned by crime boss Mr. Big, who reveals Otterton went “savage”—reverted to a feral state—and attacked his chauffeur Manchas. At his home, Manchas mentions Otterton yelled about “night howlers” before the attack. Moments later, Manchas himself turns savage and chases the pair. Judy saves Nick by trapping Manchas and calls the ZPD for help, but when they arrive, Manchas has vanished. Bogo demands that Judy turn in her badge, but Nick reminds Bogo that Judy still has ten hours to solve the case.
At City Hall, Bellwether offers Judy and Nick access to the city’s traffic cameras. They discover Manchas was captured by wolves, who Judy surmises are the “night howlers”. They locate the missing predators—all gone savage—imprisoned at Cliffside Asylum, where Mayor Leodore Lionheart hides them from the public while trying to determine the cause of their behavior. Lionheart and the asylum staff are arrested for false imprisonment and Bellwether becomes the new mayor.
Judy, praised for solving the case, has become friends with Nick and asks him to join the ZPD as her partner. However, she upsets him at a press conference by suggesting a predatory biological cause for the recent savage behavior; her comments also incite hateful speech and discrimination against predators throughout Zootopia. Feeling guilty for the results of her words, Judy quits her job and returns to Bunnyburrow.
Back home, Judy learns that the night howlers are actually the crocus bulbs Weaselton stole, and they contain a neurotoxin that has severe psychotropic effects on mammals, causing them to go savage. After returning to Zootopia and reconciling with Nick, the pair confront Weaselton, who (with a little persuasion from Mr. Big) tells them the bulbs he stole were for a ram named Doug. They find Doug in a laboratory hidden in the city subway, developing a drug made from night howlers, which he has been shooting at predators with a dart gun.
Judy and Nick obtain the serum as evidence, but before they can reach the ZPD, Bellwether confronts them in the Natural History Museum and takes the evidence, revealing herself as the mastermind behind a prey-supremacist conspiracy to frame predators as dangerous and savage. Bellwether traps Judy and Nick in an exhibition after Nick refuses to abandon an injured Judy. She shoots a serum pellet at Nick to make him kill Judy and summons the ZPD for help, but Judy and Nick have replaced the serum pellets in Bellwether’s gun with blueberries. Enraged, Bellwether threatens to frame the pair for the attacks before discovering that Judy baited her into openly declaring her role in the attacks and recorded the confession with her recording device; Bellwether attempts to escape, only to find herself and her crooked group of cops surrounded by Chief Bogo and his loyal officers.
Lionheart publicly denies knowledge of Bellwether’s plot and states that his imprisonment of the savage predators was a “wrong thing for the right reason”. With the cause of the epidemic identified, the savage animals are cured and Judy rejoins the ZPD. Nick graduates from the Zootopia Police Academy as the city’s first fox police officer and becomes Judy’s partner.

5. Balody Model 18006 – 18011 Dragon Ball Characters
Balody Model 18006 – 18011 Dragon Ball Characters
The Dragon Ball manga series features an ensemble cast of characters created by Akira Toriyama. The series takes place in a fictional universe, the same world as Toriyama’s previous series Dr. Slump, and follows the adventures of Son Goku during his boyhood years as he trains in martial arts and explores a fantastical version of planet Earth in search of the seven orbs known as the Dragon Balls that are used to summon a wish-granting dragon. The tone of the series becomes more action-oriented and less comedic when Goku reaches adulthood, as he and his allies would find themselves defending Earth against various threats, overcoming seemingly insurmountable opponents and eventually emerging victorious against progressively more powerful foes.
During the course of the story, Goku encounters allies such as Bulma, Kame-Sennin, and Trunks, rivals such as Tenshinhan, Piccolo, and Vegeta, and villains such as Freeza, Cell, and Majin Boo. Goku’s group of associates, known as the Dragon Team (ドラゴンチーム Doragon Chīmu)[ch. 165], bolster its ranks throughout the series with the addition of former enemies and new heroes. The group is also known in Japanese as the Z Fighters (Z戦士 Zetto Senshi)[1] or TEAM “Z”[2] in other media, and in the English dub of Dragon Ball Z as the Earth’s Special Forces.[3]
While many of the characters are humans with superhuman strength and/or supernatural abilities, the cast also includes anthropomorphic animals, extraterrestrial lifeforms, and even deities who govern the world and the universe. The series also includes depictions of the afterlife and time travel as a means of creating historical divergences. Dragon Ball Super, in particular, expanded the set of the series to include parallel universes; Universe 7, or the Seventh Universe in the English dub, is designated as the universe where the vast majority of the Dragon Ball series takes place.

9. Balody Model 16007 Large Totoro
Balody Model 16007 Large Totoro
In 1958 Japan, university professor Tatsuo Kusakabe and his two daughters, Satsuki and Mei, move into an old house to be closer to the hospital where the girls’ mother, Yasuko, is recovering from a long-term illness. Satsuki and Mei find that the house is inhabited by tiny creatures called Susuwatari—small, dark, dust-like house spirits seen when moving from light to dark places.[note 1] When the girls become comfortable in their new house and laugh with Tatsuo, the soot spirits leave the house to drift away on the wind and find another empty house.
One day, Mei sees two white, rabbit-like ears in the grass and follows the ears under the house. She discovers two small spirits who lead her through a briar patch and into the hollow of a large camphor tree. She meets and befriends a larger version of the same kind of spirit, which identifies itself by a series of roars that she interprets as “Totoro”. She falls asleep atop the large Totoro, but when Satsuki finds her, she is on the ground in a dense briar clearing. Despite her many attempts, Mei is unable to show her family Totoro’s tree. Tatsuo comforts her by telling her that this is the “keeper of the forest,” and that Totoro will reveal himself when he wants to.
One rainy night, the girls are waiting for Tatsuo’s bus and grow worried when he doesn’t arrive on the bus they expect him on. As they wait, Mei eventually falls asleep on Satsuki’s back and Totoro appears beside them, allowing Satsuki to see him for the first time. He has only a leaf on his head for protection against the rain, so Satsuki offers him the umbrella she had taken along for her father. Totoro is delighted at both the shelter and the sounds made upon it by falling raindrops. In return, he gives her a bundle of nuts and seeds. A giant, bus-shaped cat halts at the stop, and Totoro boards it, taking the umbrella. Shortly after, Tatsuo’s bus arrives.
The girls plant the seeds. A few days later, they awaken at midnight to find Totoro and his two miniature colleagues engaged in a ceremonial dance around the planted nuts and seeds. The girls join in, whereupon the seeds sprout, and then grow and combine into an enormous tree. Totoro takes his colleagues and the girls for a ride on a magical flying top. In the morning, the tree is gone, but the seeds have indeed sprouted; it is left unclear whether or not the girls were dreaming.
The girls find out that a planned visit by Yasuko has to be postponed because of a setback in her treatment. Satsuki, disappointed and worried, tells Mei the bad news, which Mei does not take well. This leads to an argument between the two, ending in Satsuki yelling at Mei and stomping off. Mei decides to walk to the hospital to bring some fresh corn to Yasuko.
Mei’s disappearance prompts Satsuki and the neighbors to search for her. Eventually, Satsuki returns in desperation to the camphor tree and pleads for Totoro’s help. Delighted to be of assistance, he summons the Catbus, which carries her to where the lost Mei sits. Having rescued her, the Catbus then whisks her and Satsuki over the countryside to see Yasuko in the hospital. The girls perch in a tree outside of the hospital, overhearing a conversation between their parents and discovering that she has been kept in the hospital by a minor cold, but is otherwise doing well. They secretly leave the ear of corn on the windowsill, where it is discovered by the parents, and return home on the Catbus.
Eventually, Mei and Satsuki’s mother returns home, and the sisters play with other children, while Totoro and his friends watch them from afar

10. Balody Model 16093 Naruto Auction Figure
Balody Model 16093 Naruto Auction Figure
The Naruto manga and anime series features an extensive cast of characters created by Masashi Kishimoto. The series takes place in a fictional universe where countries vie for power by employing ninja who can use superhuman abilities in combat. The storyline is divided into two parts, simply named Part I and Part II, with the latter taking place two-and-a-half years after the conclusion of Part I. It is followed by the sequel series Boruto: Naruto Next Generations by Ukyō Kodachi, which continues where the epilogue of the first series left off. The series’ storyline follows the adventures of a group of young ninja from the village of Konohagakure (Village Hidden in the Leaf).
The eponymous character of the first series is Naruto Uzumaki, an energetic ninja who wishes to become Hokage, the leader of Konohagakure and holds a monster called the Nine-Tails in his body. During the early part of the series, Naruto is assigned to Team 7, in which he meets his rival Sasuke Uchiha, a taciturn and highly skilled “genius” of the Uchiha clan; Sakura Haruno, who is infatuated with Sasuke and has Naruto’s attention and Kakashi Hatake, the quiet and mysterious leader of the team. Over the course of the series, seeking out Sasuke when he ran away from the village, Naruto interacts with and befriends several fellow ninjas in Konohagakure and other villages. He also encounters the series’ antagonists, including Orochimaru, a former ninja of Konohagakure scheming to destroy his former home, as well as the elite ninja of the criminal organization Akatsuki who seeks out jinchuriki like Gaara for the tailed beasts.
The eponymous character of the second series is Boruto Uzumaki, the son of Naruto and Hinata Hyuga who is assigned to Team Konohamaru also known as Team 7, which includes Sasuke and Sakura’s daughter — Sarada Uchiha, Orochimaru’s artificially created son — Mitsuki and the group’s leader — Konohamaru, the Third Hokage’s grandson whom Naruto befriended as a child.
As he developed the series, Kishimoto created the three primary characters as a basis for the designs of the other three-person teams. He also used characters in other shōnen manga as references in his design of the characters, a decision that was criticized by several anime and manga publications. The characters that Kishimoto developed, however, were praised for incorporating many of the better aspects of previous shōnen characters, although many publications lamented the perceived lack of growth beyond such stereotypes. The visual presentation of the characters was commented on by reviewers, with both praise and criticism given to Kishimoto’s work in the manga and anime adaptations.
