Chapter 7 Never Ending
Valtoria's Hospital, Cordonia...
"Sit down." Hana patted the seat next to her. "You've been pacing for hours."
Maxwell shook his head. "I'm too nervous."
"One would think you were the expectant father." Olivia remarked.
"I am kinda responsible for this." He smiled at the thought. "After all, I'm the one that talked Riley into coming to Cordonia in the first place."
Liam and Elisse returned to the private waiting room.
"Any news yet?" Hana asked.
"It's begun." Liam explained. "A nurse told us that Riley is doing well. Drake is a nervous wreck."
"Sounds about right." Olivia grumbled, standing up to stretch.
She smiled when Elisse handed her a bag of salt and vinegar chips.
The cravings had begun, and as much as it surprised the sugary treat loving parents, the triplets were causing Olivia to want salty and sour foods.
"Thank you." She popped one of the chips in her mouth, sighing in delight.
Liam shook his head. "Are we sure those are our children doing this?" He teased.
"I think it's their way of showing how much they appreciate Olivia taking care of them." Elisse added with a laugh. "They know she isn't as fond of desserts as we are."
The duchess rolled her eyes even though she was secretly touched at Elisse's words. The thought that the babies would go out of their way to keep her as comfortable as she could be seemed more like the royal couple than anything else.
Each evening, after she got settled in bed, she would talk to the triplets. Olivia shared childhood memories of her years growing up with Liam. She told them observations and conclusions she had made concerning Elisse.
She would never tell anyone else she did such, in what was her opinion, ridiculous things. Yet, a part of her wanted the babies to know how important she, herself, thought they were. How much she cared for Liam and Elisse...and now their family.
The fact that she was giving the royal couple what was once thought impossible brought a pricking of tears to her eyes.
"Damn hormones." She grumbled, blinking rapidly to keep the tears from slipping out.
Drake chose that moment to burst into the waiting room.
"She's here!" His smile practically glowed. "The baby is perfect. Looks just like Brooks!"
Everyone voiced their congratulations while Olivia gave up the battle and allowed her tears to fall.
At least I'm not the only one crying.
Hana was delicately dabbing at her own eyes while Maxwell bawled.
Soon they were taken to see the newest Walker.
"Everyone," Riley said softly, "meet Hope." She handed the infant to Drake. "She hasn't quite learned that one should stay awake when company visits."
After Hana cuddled her close she passed the baby to Liam.
He regarded the bundle in pink blankets, thinking about her nearly being the heir to the throne.
He wasn't about to question how all that he had gone through the last few years had led to his life resembling one he could have never imagined.
Each misfortune he had suffered had somehow pushed him toward his finally finding a happiness all his own.
Leo's abdication led to meeting Riley. Though their love had not endured, it had revealed to him what he had truly needed in a significant other. It gave him the courage to not allow anything to take it away from him again if given another chance to fall in love.
If he had not been so impatient in naming an heir, then he never would have had a chance to really get to know Elisse. He might have encountered her down the road at some international event, but would he have pursued her?
Would she have pursued him?
He handed Elisse the baby, watching as a tender smile formed on her lips. He knew they both were imagining what it would be like to hold their babies.
His eyes rested on Olivia. She had one hand protectively over her slight baby bump.
If her parents had not died in a traitorous act, then she might not have volunteered so readily to being a surrogate. Would she be such close friends to Liam if they had lived? Would she have been so willing to do whatever sacrifice was needed for Cordonia?
Seeing now that there had to have been some kind of grand design in each heart wrenching moment in their lives to lead them to what they were meant to have helped when reflecting back on the past.
Once Hope was back in Riley's arms, he quietly observed Drake with his family.
He had once held bitterness toward him for taking the one he had lost his heart to. And yet, now that he had Elisse and a family of his own in the making, he couldn't feel anything other than a simple joy that his best friend had found a happiness all his own.
Seeing them together with their little public displays of affection didn't phase him at all. There was no twinge of pain. No...nothing.
Elisse slipped her hand in his, drawing him away from reminiscing.
Liam lifted her hand to his lips, smiling when she rested her head against his shoulder.
The future lay before them and he was more than excited at what was next for them.
***************
Beginning of the third trimester, the Royal Palace...
"You're going to have to stop traveling." Ethan explained. "In fact, I'm putting you on bedrest."
"For how long?" Olivia asked.
"For the rest of the pregnancy."
Preparing for an argument, Ethan was surprised when Olivia dropped her head into her hands.
Her shoulders shook with silent sobs.
Elisse laid a hand on her back, trying to soothe her.
"Olivia?" Liam gently touched her shoulder. "Are you in pain?"
"No." Her voice cracked. She lifted her eyes to Ethan's. "Did I do something wrong?"
"No. Not at all." He reached over and placed his hand on top of hers. "This happens often when carrying multiples."
She took deep breaths to try and call down.
"I'm sorry." She wiped her eyes. "I seem to be crying over everything lately."
Elisse shushed her while Liam praised how well she had been doing.
Once the couple were reassured that everything was still looking well, they left after hearing the babies' heartbeats.
"I want to monitor you through the night." Ethan explained when Olivia moved to return to her room.
"You do?" Her eyes narrowed. "Why?"
"You've had two bouts of contractions." He continued to type his notes, believing that to be the end of their conversation.
"Can't I be monitored in my room?"
"No."
"Ethan!"
He lifted his eyebrows at her outburst.
"Can I at least move to the hospital bed, or were you intending on me staying on the examining table from now on?" She snapped.
"Olivia, what's wrong?"
She folded her arms over her stomach. "Nothing."
"Nothing?" He snorted softly.
"Yes, nothing." She grumbled. "Nothing you would be concerned over or even consider worthwhile."
He closed his laptop and gave her his full attention. "Does it involve you?"
"Obviously." She averted her eyes. "Why else would I be sitting here?"
He rose and helped her off the table. "Come on. Let's get you settled, then you can tell me what is going on in that head of yours."
"Why must you make it sound like I'm some emotional idiot?" She raised her shirt for him to place the tocodynamometer around her belly.
"I don't do that." He argued.
"Yes, you do." She placed her hand where a little knee or elbow was pressing. "Even the heirs agree."
He snorted softly. "My apologies. I thought I treated you rather well."
"You do." She admitted. "I don't know why I'm trying to fight with you."
When she kept her eyes downcast, Ethan pulled a chair next to her bed and sat down. "I have all the time in the world to hear what is really wrong."
"I'm..." She grit her teeth, hating the words that were about to come out. "I'm scared."
"Of?"
She shot a glare at him for making her explain. "Of giving birth." Needing to justify herself, she hurried to defend such a feeling. "This isn't something I could train for. And given the few women I know who have given birth, no one has the same experience."
"That's true."
Olivia tried to wait patiently to see if he would say anything else. When he simply looked at her, she felt her irritation return.
"That's true? That's all you have to say?!"
He shrugged. "Well I certainly don't have any first hand experience to offer."
"Your bedside manner is remarkable."
He leaned forward and placed his hand on hers that rested on her belly. "I don't know how this will go. I can give you medical facts and statistics, but they will do little to ease your mind. I can tell you about all the successes I have had as a doctor. It still won't matter."
"You're making it worse." She tried to pull her hand away.
Ethan gripped her fingers. "What I can tell you is that I will do everything within my power to get you and the triplets through this." His thumb brushed her hand. "I will be right by your side if we do have to perform a cesarean. I will make certain you have the best of everything."
She studied his face, feeling reassured by the calm determination stamped in his features.
With a squeeze of his hand, she relaxed back against her pillows. "Thank you Ethan."
He smiled softly at her while settling in for a night of monitoring.
*******************
Nearly two months later...
Elisse trembled as she tried to put on the surgical gown she was given. She crammed her hair under the cap while trying not to think that within minutes, she would see her children being born.
When Olivia's contractions started the night before, Elisse and Liam had rushed from their bedroom knowing that this could very well be the moment.
There had been numerous false alarms, but this one was finally it. What they had not anticipated was how long it was taking.
Ethan and some obstetricians he had worked with in Boston had decided that a vaginal birth did not seem to be possible. One of the triplets was still in a breached position and blocking the other two.
Olivia had taken the news well, though most of the color had drained from her face. She was already exhausted from the nearly twenty hours of contractions and silent worry. She gripped Ethan's hand when he tried to leave to prepare.
"I'm only leaving to change." He explained.
"Then you'll come back?" She asked.
"I promised you didn't I?" He asked.
She nodded.
He was surprised when she pressed his hand to her cheek.
"Thank you." She breathed as another contraction began. Her fingers tangled with his as it caused a groan of pain to slip out.
He waited until she relaxed before easing his hand away. "I'll be back."
Liam and Elisse had followed him out.
"Will she be alright?" Liam asked.
"Yes." Ethan scrubbed his hands and arms. "Dr. Lahela is one of the best surgeons I've worked with. With him and the obstetric team on hand. All four of our patients should do well."
Elisse had remained quiet as the medical team rushed to set up the room for the delivery. Her eyes followed the young, handsome surgeon who greeted everyone with a confident smile.
Liam stepped up beside her and gently squeezed her hand. "This is it, my love."
She tilted her head to the side, noticing the crinkle around his eyes. Though the surgical mask hid the lower half of his face, there was no denying his excited smile.
She let go of his hand to hug him.
He held her close, resting his cheek on top of her head.
"I love you, Liam." She raised her eyes to capture his. "Our life, our family, is more than I could have ever hoped for."
He tenderly cupped her cheek. "I love you too." He took her hand and pulled her along. "Now let's go meet our children."
The pair stood at Olivia's head while the cesarean was performed. Liam kept his arm around Elisse as they waited for the first glimpse of their children.
The duchess kept her eyes on Ethan's profile. He had taken her hand as soon as he returned to her side. When Bryce had placed the scalpel to her abdomen, Ethan had intertwined his fingers with hers. His piercing gaze went from the procedure to her face. Seeing her remain calm helped him to focus once more on the birth.
Bryce lifted one of the babies out. "Looks like you have a prince." He smiled at the couple who watched anxiously as the nurses and assisting doctors cleaned and examined the wailing newborn.
"And his twin brother." Bryce removed another, chuckling when the crying infant peed on a nurse. "He'll be trouble."
Elisse covered her mouth as tears streamed down her cheeks. She placed her other hand on Olivia's shoulder as Bryce delivered the smaller of the three.
"Poor little princess, trapped with those rowdy boys." He chuckled when her softer wail was given as a response. He looked up at the royal couple. "Congratulations, your majesties. You have a family."
****************
A couple of hours later, Elisse and Liam sat with Olivia. Each held one of the babies that had been born.
"What will you name them?" Olivia asked, smiling when the little prince frowned at her.
"We never did decide on names for a boy." Liam chuckled when the crown prince in his arms yawned.
"Our princess shall of course hold the name that means the most to us." Elisse placed a kiss on her daughter's forehead.
Liam smiled in agreement. "Hopefully she will carry it well."
"What are you going to call her?" Olivia asked.
"Libby for short." Elisse replied. "Princess Olivia for all formal occasions."
****************
Epilogue, Applewood Manor, four years later...
Liam chased after his children in the apple orchard. Their squeals drew laughter from Elisse as she set out their picnic.
When Libby was swept up in her father's arms, her brothers, Connor and Christopher, each tried to save her by grabbing onto Liam's legs.
Liam playfully dropped to the ground. "Help!" He cried out to his wife. "I'm outnumbered again!"
Elisse rushed over, to only collapse in giggles when the triplets rushed into her arms.
Liam watched them, feeling as if his heart would burst with pride over his family.
These last five years had been the happiest of his life. His marriage to Elisse had been what he and Corodnia had needed. The birth of their children had been a day of celebration across the country.
Peace and prosperity had followed.
Amalas visited often with her allies, causing Cordonia to be one of the most sought after countries in the EU. Trade and tourism grew from these alliances. Cordonia's unemployment rate became nearly nonexistent, causing more contentment than the country had seen in the last three hundred years.
As the triplets grew and the people caught glimpses of their sweet personalities, they were just as beloved as their parents were.
Elisse drew him from his thoughts when she spoke to the children about their upcoming trip for a wedding.
Olivia had been hailed by everyone as a hero. Liam and Elisse took every chance they could to say that they wouldn't have their children if not for her generous offer. No one, they said, could have done a better job.
Olivia had returned to Lythikos shortly after giving birth. Ethan had gone with her to assist in her recovery and to begin the plans for a research hospital. They had developed a close bond during those months of pregnancy. It only became stronger the more they worked together.
Though most of her friends whispered that there was something more between the fiery duchess and renowned physician, nothing seem to come about from their time together.
At least, that's what they thought.
Imagine everyone's surprise when one night at a ball in in the palace, Olivia asked Liam and Elisse if the triplets could be in her wedding.
"Wedding?!" Riley sputtered. "You're getting married?!"
"Why else would I ask for ring bearers and flower girls?" Olivia rolled her eyes. "And I suppose I will need Hope as a flower girl also to make it even."
"Who's the lucky guy?" Drake asked, unable to imagine anyone voluntarily tying his life to her.
"Who else?" Came a deep voice from behind them.
Ethan came around and stood next to Olivia. His hand found hers while they met everyone's curious stares.
After congratulations were given and promises that the children would do their best, Olivia and Ethan had left the group to dance.
Speculation amongst the group of how and when were whispered. Knowing the pair well, Elisse knew that guessing was all they would get. Neither Ethan nor Olivia would likely tell them anything about their love life.
She couldn't help but secretly hope that her fertility issues had somehow helped in putting them together.
She believed she owed them everything. Both had a hand in giving her and Liam their hearts' only wish for a family.
Elisse had suspected a closeness between them but had never said anything about it. She knew that neither Ethan nor Olivia would appreciate any interference, much less attention toward their relationship.
Watching the couple as they danced, she couldn't imagine any two people she thought deserved to find happiness more than them.
Months of wedding planning went by. Practice and fittings were completed. People from near and far were making the journey to the cathedral nestled in the snowy mountains.
"Mommy?" Libby asked once they were seated on the picnic blanket. "Can I keep some of the flowers? I don't want to throw them all."
"Do we get to throw the rings?" Connor asked.
"And the pillow?" Christopher pretended to throw an imaginary pillow at his brother, laughing when Connor pretended to be knocked down by it.
"I don't think that is quite what Olivia and Ethan want." Liam explained. "I suggest you keep to how we practiced."
"We will." Christopher promised.
"And we can always pick more flowers." Elisse reminded Libby. "You want Olivia to have a pretty aisle to walk down, don't you?"
The couple shared a smile when Libby quickly agreed to make it beautiful with the petals she would be given to toss.
Their children kept up a happy chatter about the upcoming trip. Snowmen, snowball fights, and sledding were planned amongst the three.
Liam reached for Elisse's hand as they listened to the cheerful voices. She scooted closer to him to kiss his cheek.
He returned the kiss, a soft smile forming with the thought that his life was filled with endless moments like this.
Everything he had ever wanted was right here.

(Liam x OC* Elisse Mallin) (Drake x Riley) in a Choices The Royal Heir fan fiction
A/N This idea came to me one night when I couldn't sleep. In this version from The Royal Heir, it has been nearly three years since Riley married Drake. Their infant daughter, Hope, was named heir to Cordonia's crown. Liam considers the possibility of dating after pining for Riley all these years. Elisse is a noble and first cousin to Queen Amalas of Monterisso. She will eventually become an ambassador, settling in Cordonia to continue Amalas's alliance. She also has a small bit of significant history coinciding with Liam's social season. This first part though will take us through the past for our main characters.
Not sure who to tag for this new miniseries, LOL. Let me know if you want to be added.

Prologue
Two years ago, Cordonia...
"To keep people's attention away from your brother's," Constantine's voice hardened, "decision to abdicate," his fist clinched for a moment, "we will have you participate in a season for a potential bride."
Liam swallowed uncomfortably. He knew there was a possibility his father would insist on this particular custom. He had hoped though that like Leo, he would be given a few years reprieve before he had to choose a bride.
Constantine fought through the chest pain he hid from everyone as he continued to explain what the next few months would be like for his only obedient son.
"We will have the usual bevy of ladies from Cordonia's noble houses. Perhaps sprinkle a few from other countries to appease the people."
"Yes sir." Liam mumbled when his father seemed to silently demand his agreement. "Whatever you think is the best way to move forward."
"Good." Constantine waved toward the door. "You may go. We will make our announcement tomorrow."
Liam bowed his head in acceptance. Still in a state of disbelief as he made his way to his chambers, he didn't hear his best friend calling his name.
"Liam?" Drake jogged to catch up to him. "I heard about Leo. Is it true?"
The new crown prince waited to answer until they were behind closed doors.
"It is." He rubbed a hand down his face. "Leo abdicated."
Drake poured them both a drink. He observed the slight tremble in Liam's hand as he took a healthy gulp of whiskey. Eyes closed briefly as he gathered his thoughts.
"I--I'm going to have to get married."
"What?" Drake breathed in disbelief. "Why?"
"All part of being king." Liam's lips twisted in a bitter smile.
He rolled his glass between his hands as he stared down at its contents. "I have to choose one during this year's social season."
"You have to go through all that Leo did?" Drake asked.
"Yes, but unlike his, I won't know who I'm supposed to choose." Liam grimaced as he swallowed the rest of his drink. "Madeleine had been chosen years ago by Father and Regina. The competition was mostly for the public's entertainment than to actually choose a queen."
Drake slumped back in his chair. "I'm sorry, Liam."
"It's..." He got up to pace, "it's fine. It's an honor to have a chance to serve my country. To marry and have a family...perhaps life will be better."
Perhaps this palace will feel like a home, he thought.
"When will it be announced?"
"Tomorrow."
"So soon." Drake murmured.
Liam briskly nodded.
His closest friend held his glass up in a toast. "Here's hoping, Liam."
*****************
Monterisso Royal Palace, a week later...
"Elisse." Amalas hugged her cousin. "Thank you for coming so quickly."
"Of course." Elisse took the offered chair. Her eyes dropped down to the baby bump showing. "How are you feeling?"
"Good." Amalas gently patted her tummy. "This baby has finally decided I'm not the enemy and has agreed that food is definitely a good thing."
Elisse laughed, shaking her head at her cousin's humor.
"But enough about the spoiled future king or queen I’m having." Amalas handed over a letter with Cordonia's royal seal. "Read this."
Elisse scanned the invitation, eyes widening slightly. "Prince Leo abdicated? Do we know why?"
The spy queen chuckled. "You know I do." She leaned over and grabbed a file off her table. "Let's just say that the former crown prince did not want the responsibilities that went along with the crown."
Elisse opened the file and snorted. "I've heard that Lady Madeleine can be difficult to deal with."
"That along with wanting his freedom to wander the earth like a rich playboy are his reasons." Amalas pointed out a photograph one of her agents snapped recently on a cruise ship. "This woman, Katie, is an even bigger reason."
"They're engaged?" Elisse whispered in disbelief. "He didn't waste any time, did he?"
"No, he did not." Amalas reclined in her chair. "Elisse? What would you think of Monterisso gaining an alliance with Cordonia?"
"I think it would benefit our country as well as theirs." She replied, setting Leo's folder down.
Another folder was handed to her. Her lips curved into a soft smile at the pictures of Cordonia's new crown prince. Each aspect her cousin found on Liam had made him a man she thought she would enjoy meeting.
"Marriage is the easiest and strongest alliance one can have with a foreign power."
Elisse looked up. "You're suggesting  I take part in Prince Liam's search."
"Exactly." Amalas smiled at her. "I can't think of a better queen for Cordonia than you." She reached over and grasped her hand. "But feel free to say no. I won't force you to do this if you do not wish to."
"I would like to meet him." Elisse admitted. She lowered his eyes to his picture. "He is very handsome."
"You always did like blue eyes." Amalas teased.
Elisse bit back a smile. "I do."
"Would you like to attend Cordonia's social season?"
Elisse slowly nodded. "Yes, I think I would."
Amalas picked up the letter from Constantine. "I'll go ahead and schedule your health exam."
"My what?" Elisse blinked in surprise.
"Cordonia's king isn't taking any chances that his last possible heir marries a woman unable to have children." Amalas grinned at her cousin. "Lucky for him that our family is notorious for our reproduction abilities."
Elisse laughed. "Our mothers certainly came from a large family." Her smile turned tender. "Whenever I think of my future, I always see myself with three or four children."
*****************
A few weeks later, Cordonia, the King's study...
"Have you made a list of those that are participating?" Regina asked her husband.
"I have." He handed her a sheet of paper.
The Queen scanned the names. "What happened to the Monterisso viscountess? I thought from Queen Amalas's letter that they were hoping to make a match."
Constantine's lips firmed in a disappointed frown. "She cannot have children."
Regina's countenance fell. "How tragic."
"Indeed." He replied. "It would have been a profitable match for us." He released a resigned sigh. "I suppose we now settle for Madeleine to take the crown again."
***************
The viscountess's chambers, Monterisso Palace...
"Elisse." Amalas pleaded. "Please, talk to me."
The young viscountess shook her head. Tears fell silently as she clutched a pillow to her stomach. Her thoughts were too much for her. All the plans she had dreamed of as a little girl were destroyed from one simple examination.
All from thinking Liam had beautiful blue eyes and seemed like a nice man she could easily fall for.
A choked sob burst forth as she doubled over from the pain of it all.
"Elisse." Amalas tried to wrap her arms around her. "I'm so sorry."
Elisse knew her cousin was. She knew Amalas would move heaven and earth for her if she could. Unfortunately, there were some things even a powerful queen could not do.
"We'll call in every specialist we can find." Amalas whispered, gently rocking Elisse. "I refuse to believe--"
"Stop!" Elisse cried out. "Please stop." Her anguished eyes met her cousin's. "I can't continue to hear doctors say that it is impossible."
"It's not." Amalas argued. "I can’t believe you are unable to--"
"I only have one ovary!" Elisse snapped. "It is so damaged from the endometriosis and benign tumors that I'm lucky to have a period every few months." She looked down at her worthless womb. "Even my uterus is filled with fibroids to the point they have warped it beyond repair. Surgery won't help." She wiped angrily at her tears. "No one will marry me now."
"That's not true! You--"
"Amalas, you know what nobles need." Elisse bit out. "They need heirs. They need a woman to fulfill that role. I'm completely obsolete in our world now."
She turned away from her cousin's sudden tears. She didn't want her pity. She didn't want anything except those elusive images of cuddling her own children.
If she could turn her mind off and focus on something else, anything else...
"I'm going to go away for a while."
Amalas jerked upright. "What?"
"I need to be alone." Elisse turned to face her. Her eyes filled with tears when her gaze dropped down to her cousin's ever growing baby bump. "I need to come to terms with all of this."
"Will you back in time for..." An expression of guilt flickered over the queen's face for such a selfish question.
"I'll try." Elisse hedged. "I promise."
She knew Amalas depended on her. Though the two had numerous cousins sprinkled in various titled positions all over Europe, they had always had a special bond that made them more like sisters. Perhaps it was their mothers' doing that made certain they would always have the other close at hand.
But Elisse knew deep down, she would have been close to her cousin without any outside influence. The notorious Queen of Spies distrusted most people, even some of their blood relatives. Yet, she trusted Elisse with everything.
She hated to leave her during her pregnancy, but the viscountess didn’t think she could take being around an expectant mother right now.
Amalas hugged her once more. "I'll arrange your travel. But I insist you take Felix with you as a bodyguard." She waited on Elisse's agreement. "Let me know where and when you wish to leave."
"I don't care where." Elisse whispered. "Just as long as I can leave as soon as possible."
***************
New York City, a month later...
"One nondescript bar as requested." Maxwell announced, holding the door open.
"Steaks for the table!" He yelled out.
"And four whiskeys!" Drake chimed in.
Riley rolled her eyes at Daniel. "You're really going to leave me with these guys?"
"I promise I'll work two of your shifts whenever you want." He bargained.
She let out a tired sigh. "Make it three and we have a deal."
He shook her hand. "You are brutal with negotiations."
She laughed, piled the tumblers of whiskey on her tray, and headed for the bachelor party.
She passed three drinks out. "I thought there were four of you."
"There are." Drake winked at her, causing a blush to form on her cheeks. "Right behind you is number four."
She turned around and blinked.
He's so handsome.
Liam smiled at her. "Pardon me, Miss?"
"Hmm?" She shook herself out of her daze. "Of course."
His smile flashed, making her knees feel slightly weak. "If you would..." He gestured toward his seat that she was blocking.
Her cheeks flared even more with color. "Right. Sorry."
She decided then and there to not allow her eyes to rest on him the remainder of their time here.
A few hours later, Liam approached her.
"Thank you for being so patient with us." His charming smile was a bit bashful. "I don't suppose I could repay such kindness with buying you a drink."
Riley found herself mesmerized by his blue eyes. "Where were you planning on going next?"
"I actually hoped you could help with that." He rubbed the back of his neck. "The guys hoped to go to a nightclub."
Her nose wrinkled. "I say forget the nightclub. There's a beach cove I could show you that is just the place to unwind."
"That sounds perfect." He held his hand out. "Shall we?"
****************
Six months later, Edenbrook Hospital, Boston...
Elisse chewed on her lower lip, wishing she could hear what the group of doctors were saying behind the glass partition.
After taking her file and passing it to a man in surgical scrubs, Dr. Ramsey walked back into her room.
"Ms. Mallin, after further examination," his expression gentled, "I believe your doctors in Monterisso were correct."
Elisse lowered her eyes. "I see."
"I still want to perform the surgeries we discussed." He sat down beside her hospital bed. "The severe pain in your uterus will only increase if we don't remove the fibroids. Dr. Tanka isn’t sure though how it will be after your surgery."
"Whatever you think." She closed her eyes tight. "It doesn't really matter what shape it is in. I suppose we should just remove it altogether."
Her doctor rested his hand over hers. He waited patiently for her to make eye contact.
"We won't know for certain until Dr. Tanka gets in there, but we believe we can save your ovary."
A bitter laugh escaped her lips. "By all means, hold on to that worthless body part."
His brow furrowed. "Elisse, I don't like the thought of you in this state of mind before surgery."
"I'm sorry." She replied automatically. "I don't mean to sound like this." Her gaze held his. "I--I never wanted much in life." Her shoulder lifted. "Perhaps it was the life I was born into, but having a family was more than passing on my noble title."
Ethan remained silent, allowing her time to express herself.
"I know I need to accept this, but I couldn't help but hope after reading about your diagnostic team," She rested her head back against her pillow, "I wanted the impossible."
"There's still a chance your uterus can remain intact. We might even be able to save some of your eggs." Ethan reminded her. "You could find a surrogate and--"
"I know." She sniffed. "And I also know there is a chance my eggs might not be in any shape to be saved."
She noticed his frown and gently squeezed his hand. "Thank you for trying, Dr. Ramsey."
"We're not done yet." He stood up when Dr. Tanka walked inside. "We'll talk more later."
Once everything was settled for her surgery in the morning, her bodyguard returned and kept vigil by her bedside.
"Felix," Elisse smiled softly at the middle aged man. "You should go to the hotel and rest."
"I'm fine m'lady." He grumbled.
Her eyebrow lifted at the six foot seven man. "That chair has to be uncomfortable."
A flicker of humor flashed in his eyes. "I've had better and worse, m'lady."
She began to laugh. "I can't imagine anything being worse than that."
"You haven't been on some of the queen's missions." He smiled warmly at her.
Elisse reached for his hand. "Thank you for watching over me."
He gently patted it, becoming gruff with his words that a lady didn't have to thank him for doing his job.
She smiled, taking comfort in his admonishment. Felix had tried to keep a professional distance from her, yet her sadness had him stepping in more and more to offer what comfort he could. He thought of her as a little sister and couldn't help but smile whenever she teased him as if he was family.
Such fondness for her added to the devotion and care he would have normally never given any other noble he was assigned to.
But Elisse was special. He hoped that somehow she would find a piece of happiness that could be all her own.
****************
New York, Statue of Liberty...
Riley swallowed nervously. She didn't know how she could refuse Liam, but it was no use.
After spending so much time with Drake while Liam kept up appearances with Madeleine, she had fallen out of love for Cordonia's new king. The grumpy commoner had touched her heart with his stories of not belonging. She had felt the same way while enduring every snub and insult from Madeleine and some of the other ladies at court.
With so little opportunities to be with Liam, and with feeling a bit hurt that her Prince Charming had not defended her against the allegations, she convinced herself that she had no choice. She had to be with the man that had stood by her side as she tried to locate Tariq.
"Liam, I can't marry you." Her words somehow came out steady. "I came to Cordonia for you, but I fell in love with Drake."
Liam took a step back. "What? You and Drake..."
He couldn't believe it. How had this happened without him noticing? He knew that Drake was fond of her and took her out some evenings. But love?
"Liam?" Riley was growing more nervous by his silence.
Liam couldn't think of what to say.
What should I do?
He only knew he wasn't ready to lose her from his life.
"You...you intend to live in Cordonia?"
She slowly nodded. "If that's okay. I want to see where things go with Drake."
Her words were another bitter slash to his heart.
"Of course." He slid his hands in his pockets to keep from grasping her and forcing her to take her words back. "Just because you don't feel as I do, I would never hold that against you. Cordonia is your home."
She visibly relaxed. "Thank you Liam."
"I think," he focused on her, "I think you will be a benefit to Cordonia. I'm going to make you a duchess."
"A duchess?!" She gasped. "But..."
He knew this would keep her at hand. Give him a reason to see her without appearing as the desperate, rejected suitor. Perhaps now that the scandal was over and things calmed down, she might realize that what she thought was love for Drake was nothing more than gratefulness for his assistance.
Am I wrong for hoping this? Should I instead hope their love is true?
Liam forced a smile. "I arranged for us to go to the top." He motioned toward the statue. "Would you still like to?"
Riley returned his smile. "I really can't pass up an opportunity like that, can I?"
"I hoped you wouldn't." He replied.
He followed behind her, wishing this night had ended differently.
***************
Another five months later, Cordonia...
"Anton and his minions are in chains!" Riley held her glass high as the court cheered.
Liam tugged at the stiff collar of his jacket. It had been a day filled with emotions that he could not share with a single soul. Seeing the woman he thought he loved marry his best friend had cut deep. Discovering they had been kidnapped had caused both anger and worry as he rushed to face down the man who dared to take the throne from him.
Witnessing Riley and Drake fight side by side, each trying to protect the other had been eye opening. Neither cared about anything other than keeping the one they loved safe.
He couldn't begrudge their happiness. Nor could he continue to wish that circumstances had gone differently. Riley was not meant for him after all.
He knew he would have to let the past go and somehow find a way to move forward into the future.
******************
A month later, Monterisso Royal Palace...
"King Liam chose an heir!" Amalas exclaimed when Elisse walked into the main hall.
"He chose one? That is shocking." Elisse leaned forward to see the report that just came in. "Who's the lucky child?"
"That's just it." Amalas dropped the paper. "He has named the yet to be conceived child of the Duke and Duchess of Valtoria as his heir."
Elisse's brow furrowed. "But, he might still marry. His own children should be next in line."
"He says differently." Amalas pulled up his news conference for her cousin to watch.
"This seems wrong." Elisse mumbled. " I know those two are his closest friends--"
"And they are Guardian and Champion of the Realm." Amalas reminded her with an eye roll. "That's what he has had to use to get the people on board with his decision."
"Poor Liam." Elisse couldn't help but sympathize with the king. "He's being pressured on all sides for something he can't completely control."
"I think I might pay a visit." Amalas tapped her finger against her chin. "Perhaps see if the new duke and duchess are amenable to a possible alliance."
"It couldn't hurt." Elisse added.
"Indeed." The Queen smiled warmly at her. "I want you to come along. It has been too long since you and I went on a trip. I could use your ability to read people while I guide them toward a possible arranged marriage for their child and mine."
"I suppose I have to do as my queen commands." Elisse teased. "And I've yet to ever say no to my cousin."
"Doubly lucky for me." Amalas smirked.
"When do we leave?"
"Tomorrow."

Chapter 6 Taking the Next Step
Streets of the Capital, Cordonia...
There is something almost magical about being awake while the rest of the world sleeps. Sounds one normally doesn't notice during the day captures the imagination. Shadows beckon to be explored. Streetlights dot the different paths one can choose for an adventure through a terrain changed by darkness.
"I can't believe we managed to escape Felix and Bastien." Elisse whispered.
Liam chuckled, wrapping his arm around his bride of twelve hours. "I learned from the best how to slip away."
They walked along the freshly rain washed streets in search of the places that meant the most to Liam. He offered stories of himself and his friends, sneaking out during his social season and unity tour. Each memory was made sweeter by sharing his past with the lady by his side.
He still marveled at the fact that less than a month ago he managed to convince her to marry him. Elisse's doubts that she should remain with him left the moment he told her just how much she meant to him.
After all that Liam had experienced with love not being returned, Elisse's declaration of how much she loved him had made him grateful that he had not kept her at arms' length.
He doubted he would have been able to if he had tried. Everything about her drew him ever closer to her.
They walked on in contented silence. Each was lost in the whirlwind that had been the days leading up to their wedding. The entire country had been both surprised and pleased when he announced his intention to marry the viscountess from Monterisso.
Alamas had given her own press conference once back in her country. No one doubted that this was a love match after more interviews were conducted. It also just so happened to be a match made in diplomatic heaven. With Corodnia's riches combined with Monterisso's technological advances, the two would be a powerhouse that countries around the world wished to be an ally of.
Regina had thrown herself happily into planning a wedding for the couple. She was determined that theirs would outshine Riley and Drake's. A bit of motherly revenge guided her toward making everything bigger and more romantic. She was thrilled Liam had found someone who absolutely adored him. She also found a kindred spirit in Amalas joining to help with the preparations. The two were driven to give the couple all they deserved.
Liam and Elisse were usually caught smiling at each other or sharing a sweet kiss at events held in honor of their upcoming nuptials. Their happiness spread to all corners of Cordonia, making everyone forget about Liam's past with Riley and Madeleine. Everyone agreed that Elisse was perfect for him.
A few days before the wedding, Riley held a dinner for the couple at Valtoria. She and Drake were relieved that Liam was no longer alone. Though Elisse smiled and thanked them warmly for hosting them, she still held some bitterness toward the two.
She was both thankful that Riley's refusal of Liam's proposal led to him becoming hers and hurt that he had to suffer such heartache and betrayal in the first place. Seeing Liam no longer negatively affected by their presence went a long way for Elisse to manage to be polite.
Though their wedding day was plagued with cloudy skies that soon turned to a storm, nothing could take away from their happiness. Once inside Cordonia's oldest cathedral, hearts were touched by the sweet vows shared by the couple.
Elisse's wedding gown drew gasps of delight from the congregation. Cameras zoomed in to capture the petite lady in a sleeveless mermaid style dress. The lace that draped the white satin and then formed a slight train shimmered in the candlelight from the sparse crystals that were carefully placed as to not detract from the beauty of the design. A diamond tiara that Liam had given her the night before completed the veil less look.
For a noble from a country notorious for its secrets, her choice to not wear a veil was symbolic that she wanted to hide nothing from the man she had given her heart to.
Though the king and his soon to be queen were the envy of fashionistas around the globe, no one could ignore the fact that neither tried to disguise how completely happy they were.
Whispers of delight were shared among the guests the moment Liam took her hand and raised it to his lips. The little touches that neither could stop during the ceremony added even more to their sweetness. His wiping of her stray tears with the back of his hand. Her smoothing his lapels, only to have him press her hand to his heart.
It was a wedding that no one would ever forget.
In the midst of their reception, the couple thanked Regina and Amalas for everything before sneaking off to finally be alone.
Once inside the royal chambers the couple could finally be as close as they desired. Kisses were shared between whispers of love and attraction. Caresses became frantic as wedding clothes soon dropped to the floor.
All their moments falling in love led to this, being with the one who truly had lost their heart to them. Liam at one point paused in his movements to simply gaze down at his bride in the throes of passion that he had brought her. Her dark eyes met his fiery blue. Words were not needed. Breathless from his touch, she gently cupped his cheek as she pressed a tender kiss to his lips.
As they calmed their racing hearts in the aftermath, they shared the occasional kiss and smiles. Sleep eluded them as the excitement of the day still thrummed within their veins. Quickly getting dressed, the pair snuck down to the now quiet kitchen to raid the pantry.
Once enough sweets were between them, they sat on the counter, talking about their favorite moments of the day.
Then they discussed the honeymoon plans that had been kept from the press.
Their first stop planned was Boston for Elisse's appointment with Dr. Ramsey.
Once Liam saw her worry, he had insisted on their sneaking out of the palace and going for a walk.
His stories though, could only distract her for so long.
She stopped once they were near the shore. A smile briefly flashed when Liam folded his arms around her from behind.
His lips brushed a kiss to her ear. "What are you thinking about?"
"What Dr. Ramsey might say." Elisse relaxed back within her husband's arms. "I know after all that I have been told that I shouldn't get my hopes up." She let out a deep sigh. "But I can't help it."
He hugged her closer against his chest. He knew nothing could possibly top how happy he was with her, except having a child of their own. It was no secret to either one of them that they had each dreamed of one day having a family. Neither wanted to hear it was impossible.
Liam wanted to see a child with Elisse's dark hair and eyes, one he could spoil and proudly present to the world. Elisse wanted the same with his blue eyes and infectious smile. To see their own child sharing not only the physical characteristics but also those personality traits they adored in the other was something neither wanted to miss out on.
"We should probably return." Elisse turned in his embrace, smiling when he kissed her. "We still need to finish packing if we are to leave in a few hours."
The way his lips moved over her skin made all thoughts of packing seem less important.
Liam's smile held a hint of wicked mischief when he saw his wife's befuddled state.
"What am I to do with you?" She teased once he took her hand to lead her back to the palace.
"I will gladly go into detail once we are back in our bedroom." He winked at her, drawing another giggle from her lips.
*****************
Edenbrook Hosptial, Boston, two days later...
Olivia paced the confines of the examination room she had been placed in. Anxious to finally begin the decision she had made a month earlier, she was dreading to hear the news that she couldn't be the one.
After confirming that Elisse would be unable to carry a child full term, Olivia's offer to be the surrogate had shocked both the royal couple and the doctor sitting across from them.
It was the most logical decision in Olivia's mind. After all, wasn't she the one strong enough to do so? She was the one who put safety above all else. Who else would guard and protect their child just as well, if not better than them?
"Would you give us a moment, Dr Ramsey?" Liam had asked.
"Of course." He stepped out into the hallway, telling them to let him know when they were finished.
"Olivia," Elisse struggled to find the words. "We can't ask this of you."
"You're not asking.” She explained. “I’m offering”
"This is nearly a year of your life you're giving us." Liam countered. "Possibly longer if the first procedure does not take."
"It will work the first time." Olivia declared. "My body is trained in not accepting failure."
Elisse snorted softly, her heart starting to gain hope in Olivia's gruff determination. "Are you sure you want to do this?"
The duchess eyed them both before nodding. "I decided this a long time ago. Once I knew your medical history and saw Liam falling in love..." Her shoulders squared while her chin lifted, "I knew I should be not only a Guardian of Corodnia, but also a guardian of the future prince or princess."
"Olivia," Liam took her hand and kissed it. "I have no words to express how much your sacrifice means to me."
Her sharp gaze softened. "You owe me no words, Liam." She cleared her throat. "Now, call the doctor back in."
Olivia listened carefully to all that Ethan explained. She beat Liam and Elisse in her questions, then demanded more explanation from the renowned physician.
"Let's get on with the examination." Olivia demanded, as she stood up.
Ethan narrowed his eyes at her. "There is more to it than a simple physical exam. We need to--"
"I am ready to do whatever is needed." She spoke over him. "Are you not ready?"
Ethan bristled to the challenge he heard in her voice. Gathering Elisse's chart, he excused himself. With a jerk of his head toward the duchess, he walked out the door.
"Follow me, Ms. Nevarkis."
After blood was drawn and a physical given, Ethan asked her to get dressed then to wait until he returned.
She paced, wondering what was taking so long. She herself had one of the best doctors in Cordonia give her a physical a few weeks earlier. What if Dr. Ramsey noticed something that no one else had before?
Just as she was about to storm out and demand answers, Ethan returned.
He sat down and motioned for her to sit across from him in the only available chair.
"Well?" She bit out. "Am I healthy enough?"
"Physically, yes." He responded. "Now for the next part."
"When will the implantation be? Three weeks, isn't it, after I begin fertility medications?" She asked.
Ethan held his hand up to silence her. "The next part is a psychological examination."
"Excuse me?" Her eyes narrowed.
"Your mental health in this is almost if not more important in undergoing something like this." He explained. "You will be experiencing all the emotions an expectant mother goes through, yet you will be giving the baby to someone else."
She waived off his words with a flick of her hand. "I know exactly what I am doing."
A muscle spasmed in his jaw. "Ms. Nevarkis, why are you doing this?"
"Because I am able to." She folded her arms. "I'm the best one to do this for them. I have no intention to marry anyone in the near future. I do not have any sexual partners. I am free of any encumbrance."
He slowly shook his head. "Why do you want to do this?"
She blinked. "Why?"
"Yes. What is it about Liam and Elisse that you would be willing to do this?"
"They are my king and queen. Surely, you--"
"Personally." He insisted. "Why are you willing to give them a year of your life?"
Seeing he wouldn’t move forward with the plans, her carefully maintained shield dropped revealing a vulnerability she rarely allowed others to see. "I...there are two reasons."
Ethan leaned forward, resting his arms on his knees. His piercing blue gaze warmed as he tried to be less abrupt. "What are they?"
"Liam was...is...someone I owe everything to. He is the one who helped me get over my parents' deaths. He has done nothing except stand by me through the years." She explained.
"I see." Ethan rubbed a hand down his stubbled jaw. "That is a strong, emotional reason to want to do this. But you said you had another one. What is it?"
Olivia swallowed. "Let's call it a chance to prove once and for all that I am worthy of Cordonia."
"Worthy? What do you mean?"
Briefly closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and explained her family's treacherous past and her surprise marriage to Anton.
One thing that helped her get through her past, was Ethan's lack of response. He didn't interrupt her nor did his face reveal what he was thinking.
"This is why I want to do this." She explained, her voice was full of emotion. Even she could hear the need, sadness, and desperation. "I need to do this for Liam and my country. My people."
She jumped when Ethan rested his hand over hers.
Giving a gentle squeeze, he nodded. "Then you are indeed the one who should be the surrogate."
***************
"I will stay here for the injections." Olivia explained to Liam and Elisse. "Dr. Ramsey will keep a close eye on me. When you come back in three weeks, we will begin the implantation, and then in two weeks know we are expecting."
Ethan rolled his eyes. "Am I needed here at all to explain this?" He waved toward his desk. "Perhaps you should sit there."
Olivia ignored him. "Go and enjoy your honeymoon somewhere else. There is no need for you to remain here."
She grunted when Elisse enveloped her in a tight hug. Her tearful thanks were spoken in a whisper.
Liam in turn hugged her while Elisse surprised Ethan with a hug too.
"How will I ever be able to thank you enough for never giving up on me?" She asked him.
He patted her back and smiled down at her. "You don't need to." He shook Liam's hand while promising that he would do all he could to make this go as easy as possible.
***************
Edenbrook Hospital, Boston, five weeks later...
Olivia absentmindedly rubbed at the spot where blood had been drawn. She glanced at the couple who had all their hopes placed within her ability to carry their child.
Please, she silently prayed. Please let me do this for them.
Ethan returned with a smile on his face. "Congratulations. You're pregnant."
Elisse covered her mouth as a sob broke through. Liam wrapped her in his arms, tears sparking his eyes.
Olivia nearly sagged in relief. "And my offer?"
Liam and Elisse looked up. "Offer?"
"I have asked Dr. Ramsey to come to Cordonia to monitor us throughout the entire pregancy." She explained. "In exchange for not only his help in establishing a research hospital in Lythikos but in Cordonia possibly offering a grant to Edenbrook."
Liam nodded. "Of course. I was planning on doing so in Elisse's name after all that you and your hospital did for her."
Ethan cleared his throat. "I have been encouraged by our board and a few others to accept. It is a very generous offer that I can't refuse."
"Thank you!" Elisse hugged Olivia and pulled Ethan in on it. "I can never thank you both enough."
**************
The Royal Palace, two months later, Cordonia...
"Shouldn't we wait on Liam and Elisse?" Oliva asked.
Ethan continued to type in information. "Your blood work came back with some surprising results. I want to confirm my suspicions before we talk to them."
She reclined back on the padded exam table as he performed an ultrasound.
The east wing of the palace had gone through numerous changes. Given the equipment Ethan needed to monitor Olivia, rooms had been divided up for examinations and lab work. His own personal quarters were across the hallway from his work.
He had been shocked when Elisse showed him that they had knocked walls down to make him an apartment similar to the one he had in Boston.
"I want you to feel at home as much as you can while you're here." She explained. "You still will be welcome to join us whenever you wish for meals and events, but I know you need a space that is all your own."
Touched by her thoughtfulness, he had accepted the hug graciously that she still felt was needed to express her gratitude.
Liam also invited him to treat the entire palace as his own also. He personally gave him a tour, taking Ethan to the library at the end.
"One of Corodnia's previous rulers was fascinated with medicine." He led him over to a section of shelves on the second floor. "My mother shared his interest and she and I, in her honor, have made certain to keep up with the latest research."
Ethan saw not only many names he recognized through medicine's history but also some he had only been able to gather pieces of. Having a chance to read through all this at his leisure was an unexpected perk to living within the gilded palace.
The entire country was in baby fever. Riley was nearing her due date, causing added scrutiny whenever she and Drake were caught outside of Valtoria. The rest of her pregnancy had gone much easier now that the stress of having the royal heir was removed.
Cordonians were struck speechless when Elisse held an interview openly explaining her fertility problems. When she announced that Olivia would be the surrogate to hers and Liam's baby, the duchess was hailed once again as a hero to Cordonia.
The people in Lythikos were eager to share their opinions that they always knew she was a noble worthy of admiration, but they were also humbled by her willingness to do this for their monarchs.
Olivia and Ethan were soon the ones to dominate the public's interest. The American doctor was asked on numerous occasions how the pregnancy was progressing. Unused to such attention, his deadpan expression with quick, decisive words somehow helped to eliminate any anxiousness the citizens felt.
Olivia looked over at the screen. She failed to recognize what exactly Ethan was studying.
"Well?" She prodded, impatient over his continuing silence. "What is it that you have determined?"
A reluctant smile formed at her trying to disguise her worry with irritation. He took a few pictures and printed them out.
"That we were wrong." He told her.
All color drained from her face. "What do you mean?"
"We suspected twins." He reminded her. "Which was why I wanted to do more bloodwork. Your HCG pointed at that not necessarily being the case."
"Ethan." Olivia narrowed her eyes. "Tell me. I am at least carrying one child for them, aren't I?"
"No. You're carrying three."

(Liam x oc*Elisse Millan) (Drake x Riley) in a Choices The Royal Heir fan fiction
A/N It is the day after Riley and Drake told Liam that they didn’t want their child to be next in line to the throne. I will also be delving a bit into Book 3 of TRR’s reveal of who would inheirt the throne after Liam. I’m surprised that this hasn’t been brought up again in The Royal Heir books. This chapter will focus on whether or not Elisse should remain not only in Cordonia, but also with Liam.

Chapter 5 Possibilities
The Royal Gardens, Cordonia...
The occasional sound of thunder rumbling set the tone for the day's surprise news conference.
With Drake and Riley standing behind him, Liam announced that their child was no longer next in line for the throne.
Questions were followed by flashes of cameras at the trio.
"Who will you choose now?"
"Your grace, what made you decide to withdraw your child's claim?"
"Does this have anything to do with King Liam's relationship with Lady Millan?"
Liam held his hand up for silence.
"This decision is a personal one for the Duke and Duchess of Cordonia. I respect their choice and will work towards settling everyone's mind at ease toward the security of the throne." With that, he returned to the palace, leaving Riley and Drake to finish up the press conference.
****************
Cranbourne Manor, Cordonia...
"Elisse." Amalas shook her cousin's shoulder. "Wake up. You need to see this."
Elisss sat up with a start. "What's wrong?"
She blinked away her sleep as Amalas turned the news on.
"King Liam was flanked by the Duke and Duchess of Valtoria as he announced that they would no longer be providing Cordonia with a much needed heir. The trio were tight lipped about what had changed their mind. Analysts suspect the events between Duchess Riley and King Bradshaw of Auvernal led to this decision."
A clip then was shown of Liam speaking before a crowd of reporters.
"Well, at least you two are good." Amalas turned the television off. "I think I will try and meet with Liam before I go home. He needs to know I still want an alliance."
Elisse was unnaturally still as she stared at the now black screen.
"I want you to stay here as an ambassador of sorts to help further Corodnia and Monterisso's relationship." Amalas prattled on as she searched Elisse's closet. "And to enjoy time with Liam."
She noticed the silence and peeked out at Elisse. "What's wrong?"
"I--you need to find someone else to stay here." She got out of bed and went straight to the bathroom. Shutting the door so Amalas couldn't follow her, she raised her voice to be heard. "I should return to Monterisso."
"Why?" Amalas stood before the closed door. "I can send you whatever you need from home. We brought most of your clothes with us. I'll make sure your estate is cared for and--"
"I'm not going home to pack. I'm going home to stay."
"What are you talking about?" Amalas demanded.
She turned the doorknob then ordered Elisse to unlock it.
An irritated groan could be heard as the door opened.
"I'm going home with you today." Elisse repeated.
"Why?"
"Because," she hedged. "It's the right thing to do."
"Right thing? For whom? Our country needs you to stay here. I need you to further our trade agreements. Liam needs you--"
"Anyone else can do this." Elisse snapped. "And I am the last thing Liam needs right now!"
"Why do you think that?" Amalas narrowed her eyes. "Is this over this heir debacle?"
"Of course it is!" Elisse shouted. "Liam is back to where he was when Riley refused his marriage proposal. He needs to marry and produce an heir as quickly as he can before more unrest strikes Cordonia. Any political analyst would say that is the only step he can possibly make."
"Then you should definitely remain here." Amalas argued.
"Why? So I can be another source of guilt for him? He will need to marry someone else...someone who can have children." Tears filled her eyes. "Liam deserves to have a family that will continue the work he does for Cordonia."
"Elisse." Amalas pinched the bridge of her nose. She took a few deep breaths before speaking again. "You have to let this mindset go. You can't let this one issue keep you from ever enjoying what life gives you." She sighed. "The two of you are clearly in love and--"
"That's why I have to leave." Elisse sat down on the bathroom floor, unable to stand the heartache growing stronger. "He hasn't made any declarations yet and if he did...I don't think I would be able to leave him." Her eyes lifted to her cousin's when she sat down across from her. "Liam is the best man I have ever known. The most generous--he--you know he would marry me out of duty if he had a chance to say he loved me. He would do that even with the knowledge that it would be a mistake."
"It wouldn't be a mistake." Amalas said softly. "Liam is not a fool. He--"
"I know." Elisse ignored the tears that trickled down her cheeks. "But I can't be the one to keep him from having children. To see him missing out on that--"
"Stop." Amalas held her hand up. "You have yet to talk to him about this. You're jumping from one wild conclusion to the next."
"I'm not." Elisse accepted the box of tissues that were handed to her. "Amalas, I don't think I could take hearing him say that we can't be together anymore."
"So you're just going to run away? Even though he has not done nor said anything remotely like that?"
"You know it will happen. His advisors will look at this decision as a chance to guide him back toward marriage with a proper, fertile noble."
"I don't know that." Amalas stubbornly refused to accept it. "Now get dressed. We are due at the palace in an hour."
"I'm not going." Elisse glared at her.
"Yes, you are." Amalas snapped. "You are going to go with me as a Viscountess of Monterisso to cement our relationship with the ruler and people of Cordonia." She pointed at her. "Whether or not you will stay is up to you."
She slammed the bathroom door shut. Her hardened features softened to one of heartache as she heard Elisse's muffled sobs.
"What am I to do?" Amalas whispered to herself.
*****************
The Royal Palace, Corodnia...
"Her majesty, Queen Amalas of Monterisso and Viscontess Elisse Millan." A servant announced.
Liam rose from behind his desk to greet them warmly.
His happiness at seeing the one he cared for dimmed when Elisse kept her eyes cast down. No smile was returned. No words passed her lips.
Amalas glanced from one to the other. "I wanted to stop by on my way to the airport."
"You heard the press conference?"
"We did. Though that potential alliance is no more, I still wanted to formally state my willingness to keeping the promises we both have made for our countries."
"Thank you." He bowed his head. "I have no intention of letting our relationship change over Lady Riley's decision."
"Good." Amalas shook his hand. "Now then. I have decided to leave Elisse here as a liaison of sorts for Monterisso. With the proposed measures we have discussed, I think having her on hand during any transitions would--"
"I refuse." Elisse interrupted.
Amalas bit her tongue to keep from snapping at her. "As I was saying, I think she will--"
"Not be here." Elisse forced herself to look up at Liam's shocked face. "I'm going back to Monterisso."
"Elisse." Amalas hissed. "We discussed this earlier. You will--"
"I won't." She curtsied to them both. "Forgive me, but I am not the right person for this position." She spun on her heel and quickly left.
"Elisse!" Liam paused on the way to chase after her when Amalas placed a hand on his arm.
"She thinks you need to find someone to marry and have an heir with." She quickly explained.
Understanding dawned in his eyes. With a brisk nod, he hurried out.
***************
Elisse ran blindly through a side door of the palace, hoping Liam wouldn't find her. She tried to gage where she was through her tears and noticed the apple orchard a little ways in the distance.
Fearing someone would see her, she stumbled in that direction to find another way off the palace grounds.
The further she got from the palace, the louder her cries became. Her breath hitched as images of her time spent with Liam flittered through her mind. All her daydreams of a life with him crumbled with the knowledge that she would be wrong to remain with him.
Tripping over her own feet, she fell to her knees.
"Are you hurt?"
Elisse's head jerked up in surprise.
Olivia stood before her, brow deeply furrowed as she studied her.
"No." Elisse managed to say. "Thank you."
"Then why aren't you getting up?"
"I don't know."
Olivia rolled her eyes as she sat down across from her. "If you aren't hurt, then why are you crying?"
Elisse wiped her tears with the back of her hands. "I'm leaving Cordonia."
"You are?" Olivia leaned forward.
"Yes."
"Are you being forced to?"
"No."
Olivia huffed in irritation. "Elisse, why are you crying?"
"Liam." She mumbled.
"What about him?"
"He...I can't..."
"Can't have children." Olivia finished for her.
Elisse's face became even more heartbroken. "He told you? I thought--he knew how much it--I can't believe he would--"
"Liam told me nothing." Olivia corrected. "I investigated you."
Elisse blinked in surprise. "Oh."
"You don't seem upset about that."
"Why should I be?" Elisse asked. "It is what I would do if some stranger came into my country and became close to our ruler."
Olivia nodded, pleased to see that she understood. "You would be surprised how many get offended over that."
Elisse snorted. "Then they clearly don't understand how quickly an outsider can harm a country."
"Exactly." Olivia replied, admiration growing for Liam's new love. "One should always be prepared."
"That's what Amalas and I always say." Elisse's lips curved into a slight smile. "Who wants to have a meeting with someone and not try and have the upper hand from the beginning?"
"I can see why Liam thinks so highly of you." Olivia tilted her head to the side. "Which, it has been obvious to everyone that you return his admiration and affection. So the obvious question is this:  why are you leaving?"
"I heard about, " Elisse's nose wrinkled in disgust, "Lady Riley's decision."
"Ah." Olivia now understood. "So you think to save Liam added problems by leaving and allowing him a chance to choose a queen."
"One that can give him all the heirs he needs." Elisse added a touch bitterly. Her dark eyes lifted to Olivia's green. "You know it is the right thing to do."
"I do." The duchess admitted. "But, surely there is a way where you can--"
"If you investigated me, then you know there is little hope. Dr. Ramsey and Dr. Tanaka did all they could to fix my uterus and ovary."
"And?" Olivia prodded.
"And though the tumors have been removed, and even if I tried in vitro, my uterus is most likely not strong enough to carry a baby full term."
"I see." Olivia sat back in contemplation. "When do you go back for another checkup?"
"Next month."
"Then I'm going with you." Olivia decided.
"Pardon?" Elisse's eye brows drew together. "Why would you--"
"I have questions about what I read in Dr. Ramsey's report." Olivia explained. "I'm sure Liam will have his own too."
"Liam? But I'm going to end things between us."
"Why would you do that?" Olivia huffed at Elisse's inability to keep up. "Liam hasn't been this happy in years. You would leave him without allowing him to make up his own mind about what he needs in his queen?"
"You know how kind he is." Elisse narrowed her eyes. "You, yourself, understood my reasons for leaving!"
"Just because I understand, doesn't mean that I approve." Olivia argued. "Especially in not giving him an opportunity to discuss this fully."
Elisse dropped her head in her hands. "You know he will be understanding."
Olivia stood up and dusted her backside. "You are doing a disservice to both of you by refusing to talk to him." She held her hand toward Elisse. "Surely you can get through one conversation before deciding both your futures."
Elisse took a deep breath, knowing the duchess was right. She reached out and clasped the helping hand.
"You're right." She squeezed her hand in gratitude. "Thank you for listening to me."
Olivia returned the squeeze. "No need to thank me. Now go talk to Liam."
She watched the viscountess make her way back to the palace while contemplating what she could do to possibly help them.
****************
Near the hedge maze...
“There you are!” Liam jogged over to Elisse. “I’ve been searing everywhere for you.”
He took her into his arms, hugging her close.
She allowed him to comfort her a few more moments before pulling away.
“We need to talk.”
Liam stilled. "I know what you are going to say, Elisse, and the answer is, no."
"But you won't actively search for a queen while I am around!" Elisse didn’t bother to disguise the bitterness she felt. "I am the last person you should be with."
"I disagree."
"Liam, your child should be the one to inherit Cordonia. Not some random noble's." She argued. "I can't be the reason your throne is in jeopardy."
"It isn't." He argued. "Olivia is next in line through her ancestors. If I never have a child, she and her children will keep it secure."
"Then why did you rush to name Riley and Drake's child as your heir?" She asked.
A deep, frustrated sigh escaped his lips. "Because Olivia asked me to choose another."
"Why?"
"Her parents' treachery has somehow convinced Olivia that her name and blood is tainted." He explained, pulling Elisse slowly back within his arms. "No matter how often I point out that she herself is considered a hero in the eyes of the people of Cordonia, she still allows the past to haunt and guide her decisions."
His clear blue eyes gentled as he realized that Elisse was doing the very same thing. Her body's betrayal in terms of reproduction was going to keep her from allowing herself a chance at happiness with him.
He couldn't let that happen. After the past few years of pining for what he couldn't have, Liam had finally found someone he could truly be with. No pressure from outside influences. No interference. Nothing except a chance to enjoy the time they spent together.
The deep, breath catching sadness he saw coming to the surface was something he didn't want to see in her face. Ever.
"I need you to stay in Cordonia."
She closed her eyes briefly at the desperation he allowed her to hear tinging his voice.
"I need you to be with me, Elisse." Liam rested his forehead against hers. "I'm in love with you."
Tears slipped, unheeded, down her cheeks.
He waited patiently for her to say what he needed to hear most. He didn't doubt for a moment that she felt the same way. Each touch, glance, and words pointed to her caring just as much as he did.
She struggled with the inevitable. Elisse believed she should lie and say she felt nothing. Then perhaps he could find someone who could give him everything he deserved.
I have nothing to offer, she thought.
She lifted her eyes to his and knew she couldn’t hurt him like that.
"I love you too." She admitted. "So very much."
Liam's smile touched her heart with its joy. His lips met hers in an achingly tender kiss.
"You'll stay?" He asked, cradling her face in his hands.
"I will." She promised. "For as long as you want me to."
"I hope forever meets with your plans." He smiled against her lips. "Because I refuse to negotiate on that."
A tearful laugh burst out as she shook her head. "What am I to do with you?"
He lifted his head and brushed a kiss to her knuckles. "Marry me."

Chapter 3 Heart’s Honesty
The Royal Palace, Cordonia...
Liam looked up when he heard the murmur of feminine voices passing by on their way to the solarium.
Creeping towards the cracked door, he peeped out to see who it was.
He caught just a glimpse of Olivia, Riley, and Madeleine turning toward the right.
Curious yet not wishing to get caught up in conversation with any of them, he settled back in his chair and continued to review a trade proposal Elisse had given him from Amalas.
Monterisso's queen was not going to wait around on Riley's baby in making inroads toward a strong, beneficial relationship between their two countries. Since the pregnancy had been announced a couple of months back, Liam and his close knit group of friends had spent numerous events speaking to pushy foreign monarchs.
The only bright side to meeting so often, were the moments he had with Elisse. They were few and far between and much too short to satisfy him. A dance shared, a few words spoken here and there, possibly a shared smile over a private joke. All ended up making her the first person he searched for when entering into a room.
"Would you like me to bring a tray in here, your majesty or would you prefer having lunch in the dining room?"
Liam looked up at one of the footmen. "A tray, please." He called the man back. "Is there some gathering this afternoon?"
"The Queen Mother is hosting some ladies for tea in the solarium." The footman replied.
"Ah." Liam tried to focus. "Do you know who she invited?"
"I know some, sir."
Liam cocked an eyebrow, trying not to be impatient.
"Duchess Riley is the honored guest." The footman began to go through the usual name of Cordonian ladies. "Queen Isabella and Queen Amalas have also arrived."
Liam grit his teeth at not hearing what he wanted to most. "Did Queen Amalas bring another lady with her, by chance?"
"I'm not sure, sir. Should I go inquire?"
"No." Liam muttered. "Just bring my lunch in here, please."
"At once, sir." He bowed and left the king alone.
"There you are."
Liam nearly cursed. "Drake. Join me, won't you?"
"Thanks." He sat down on the couch across from him. "Haven't seen much of you recently."
Liam held up the documents he was reading. "Kingdom business."
"Ah." Drake drummed his fingers on his pants.
Liam tried to tune him out.
"Riley's having a tea party with Regina and a few others."
"So I've heard."
"Did you know the Spy Queen has returned?"
"Yes." Liam responded. "So did Auvernal's queen."
Drake ran a hand through his hair. "So, uh, have you gotten anything out of the spy that has taken up residence nearby?"
Liam lowered the documents. "Spy? What are you talking about?"
"Your investigation with Queen Amalas’s cousin." Drake narrowed his eyes. "That is why you are spending so much time with her isn't it?"
"Lady Elisse is more of a messenger between me and Amalas." Liam bit out.
"I've never seen you make sure to share most of your dances with messengers before, much less spend anymore time than you have to."
"I am doing exactly what I promised." Liam informed him. "I am taking time to get to know her. All these new events have limited my chances to be alone with her."
"Alone with her?" Drake leaned forward. "Why are you wanting to be alone with her?"
At this moment, Liam did not want to admit to Drake that he believed he was ready to try and fall in love again. He had yet to actually have a real date with Elisse, much less kiss her. He also wasn't certain her own feelings about taking that next step.
She seems to like me, he thought. Is it more than a friend? Or am I simply fooling myself like I did with Riley?
"Li?" Drake waved a hand. "Still with me?"
Liam closed his eyes. "Yes, sorry." He cleared his throat. "If I am alone with her, then she will be more inclined to talk about things she would never feel comfortable doing at a crowded gathering."
Drake slowly nodded. "That's true. Sounds like a good plan."
A plan to test her and see if she feels as I do, Liam thought.
"Are you going to try and get her alone after the queen's tea?"
Liam's eyes widened. "Elisse is here?"
"Well, yeah." Drake tilted his head slightly. "Liam, you sure there isn't anything wr--"
"Positive." Liam excused himself. "I need to put these papers in the study. Feel free to call down to the kitchen for an extra tray for lunch."
***************
The Solarium, Royal Palace, Cordonia...
What would I do without all these pastries?
Elisse gratefully took another bite of a strawberry tart. If her mouth was full then she wouldn't be pressured to talk.
Which was a good thing considering how she felt about Lady Riley Walker.
It nearly turned her stomach at how everyone was complimenting the waitress turned duchess. There was only so much bowing and scraping for attention Elisse could stand.
Especially to someone who had hurt Liam so horribly.
It didn't take a mind reader to realize that the reason Cordonia's king was not actively courting or planning on having little princes and princesses of his own was sitting across from her, gushing about what kind of father Drake would be.
"He has already promised to take all the late night diaper changes." Riley giggled.
Elisse didn't bother to hide her eye roll, earning a slight kick from her cousin.
Amalas sent her the look that somehow conveyed the reminder that they were trying to gain favor with the woman carrying the royal heir so stop making faces at every little thing she says.
Feeling somewhat chastised for possibly letting her cousin down, Elisse averted her gaze and poured herself another cup of tea.
How much longer are we going to have to sit here?
"Bradshaw would have fainted dead away if I remotely asked him to change one of the twins diapers." Isabella's brittle smile formed with the mention of her husband and children.
Elisse's eyes narrowed somewhat as she studied Auvernal's queen. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but there was something not quite right. She cut her eyes to Amalas, wondering if she too was seeing this.
Her cousin tucked a lock of her own hair behind her right ear and gently tugged on the earlobe.
Elisse returned her attention to the conversations, satisfied with that secret signal that Amalas not only saw it but was planning on investigating it further.
"What about you?" Riley asked.
Elisse glanced up and realized that all eyes were on her.
"I'm sorry." She stammered. "Did you ask me something?"
"Can you picture your husband changing diapers?" Riley prodded.
"I'm not married." Elisse forced a pleasant smile. "It's difficult enough imagining him doing so when I don't even know what he looks like."
"Oh!" Riley glared over at Madeleine. "I'm sorry. I was told you were married."
Madeleine chuckled softly. "Perhaps if you read the reports I give you, you wouldn't make a mistake like that."
Riley ignored her and focused once more on Elisse. She was determined to find out more about this woman who seemed to always find a way to be near Liam.
"Enough baby talk." She decided. "Let's talk romance."
"Zeke is taking me to Switzerland next week." Penelope shyly said. "A trip for just the two of us."
Kiara laughed. "He is so excited about it. It is all he talks of whenever one of us asks him something." She smiled at Penelope's blush. "Très romantique, non?"
"Very." Hana sighed. "You two are so sweet together."
"Anyone else have that special someone?" Riley asked. "Or needs a little help from Cupid to get them to act right?"
Olivia shook her head. "By Cupid, you mean you."
"I do." The duchess replied. "I know all about stubborn men trying their hardest to keep from being with the perfect person for them."
Elisse sat up a little straighter. "Is that how you and his grace got together?" She did her best to make her question sound like polite curiosity. "Did you have to convince him to be with you?"
Amalas stilled. She had been the one to tell Elisse all of what happened during Liam and Madeleine's engagement tour.
Riley had a dreamy expression on her face. "Drake Walker put up quite the fight. It took all my I had to get him to be with me."
"When did you realize he was worth it?" Elisse asked while turning in her chair so that Amalas couldn't kick her again. "Most would have focused on someone who seemed interested."
Olivia snorted in agreement. "I will never understand how you could choose Walker over Liam."
Riley's smile turned tender. "What can I say? He was a complete marshmallow whenever we were alone. I saw past his snark and knew he had to be mine."
"I think it's terribly romantic." Hana added. "He has shown over and over that you are the most important person in his life."
While Hana and Riley went through the list of things that made Drake perfect, Elisse tbought of Liam's actions in each scenario.
"He took a bullet for her." Hana explained to the visitors.
"I will begrudgingly give him credit for that." Olivia grumbled. "That and for helping take Anton down."
Elisse mentally countered that with Liam coming and facing Anton and his minions alone to rescue the couple.
"He sounds like he will be a protective father." Amalas interjected before they continued to extol his virtues. "One that knows the value of family."
Issabella narrowed her eyes at her. "I agree. Which is why I would love to have him as father-in-law to one of my," she took a gulp of tea, "darling twins."
While the two queens tried to sway Riley toward choosing their children, Liam stepped into the sunroom.
Regina looked up and smiled. "Liam dear, would you care to join us for a cup of tea?"
He shook his head. "Thank you, but I came in here for something else." His charming smile flashed to the ladies. "I do hate to interrupt, but I need to speak to Lady Elisse a moment."
She set her teacup down. "Yes, of course, your majesty."
When Liam noticed the curious looks, he explained that he needed her to clarify one of the requests in the document she had given him.
"Perhaps you need Queen Amalas too." Isabella smirked. "Since she is Monterisso's ruler. Plus, I'm certian Duchess Riley would enjoy hearing something other than Prince Josip's darling ways."
Amalas kept her cool and did not rise to the bait. "I would be more than happy to." She winked at her cousin. "But Elisse was such a help to me as I drafted it that she knows it as well as I do."
"We will only be a moment." Liam promised, setting Elisse's hand in the bend of his arm.
Riley, Olivia, and Hana all shared a knowing look.
Regina noticed their exchange and cleared her throat.
"Would anyone care for more tea?"
**************
Once they were out of earshot of the solarium, Elisse spoke up.
"What problem did you come across in the trade agreement?"
Liam's cheeks flushed. "Actually, I haven't seen any problem."
"Oh." She attempted to not let her imagination get away from her. "Then why did you take me away from the tea?"
Liam rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm not--that is--I" he chuckled softly while turning to face her. "I guess I simply wanted to see you."
Elisse doubted that anyone could be more adorable than Liam was in this moment.
She smiled and lowered her eyes. "Would it be too forward to say that I had hoped to causally bump into you while here for the tea party?"
"Definitely. Much too forward." He responded in a serious tone.
Her head jerked up and she saw the humor in his eyes.
She playfully pushed him away. "That certainly cured me of ever doing so again."
He laughed out loud, took her hand, and pulled her along with him.
"Where are we going?" She asked.
"To my study to look over the documents."
"But I thought you said there wasn't a problem."
Liam opened the door for her. "There isn't. But one must have their alibis in order, m'lady."
"What am I to do with you?" She teased once he shut the door.
Liam allowed his heated gaze to settle on her. Her question sparked his imagination. There were several things he would love for her to do with him.
"Is this where you spend most of your day?" She asked, exploring his bookshelves.
"For the most part."
Her eyes cut over to him. His casual stance as he leaned against the door was one she was noticing happened whenever they were near one another. His image he maintained to the rest of the world was one of proper, ram rod posture. There was rarely any softening or relaxed muscles.
Except with me, she thought.
Still highly curious and a touch nervous, Elisse sat down on a small couch.
"The Queen Mother told us about the ball you're hosting. How are the preparations going?"
Liam shrugged on his way to sit near her. "They must be going well. No one has come to me with any problems yet."
She turned towards him. "Is it for a special reason?"
You mean other than wanting a night where I can easily steal you away?
Liam kept that response to himself. "I suppose it is. Now that Lady Riley has gotten over most of the morning sickness, we can host a ball in honor of the royal heir."
Elisse was unable to control her facial expression. "I see."
Liam's eyebrows drew together. He had noticed that same irritated expression appear whenever the viscountess heard that particular name. "Elisse, do you not care for Riley?"
Her lips parted, ready to admit how she truly felt about the one that had hurt him, only to close shut. She knew she needed to be more diplomatic for Amalas’s sake.
She turned away from him and shook her head. "She seems pleasant."
Elisse was surprised she didn't choke on that word.
"Pleasant?" Liam's lips began to curve.
"Yes." She pointedly looked out the window, knowing he was amused at her answer.
If I look at him, it will all be over, she thought. She had to fight to keep her smile from appearing as he slid closer to her.
"You find Lady Riley pleasant?" He propped his elbow on the back of the couch and rested his head on his hand. "I don't think I have ever heard such a mild compliment toward her before."
Elisse was unable to resist and turned back toward him. He quirked an eyebrow in silent question when she simply stared at his face.
All she could think about was how generous he had been. Allowing Riley to live here to be near Drake. Giving her a title and a castle. Hosting their wedding. Standing as best man. Fighting to save their lives with little regard to his own safety. And now to naming their child as his heir.
Kindness barely scratchs the surface, she thought.
"Elisse?"
"Hmm?"
"What are you thinking so hard about?"
Without pausing to consider if she would end up embarrassed by her answer, she said exactly what was on her mind.
"You."
Liam didn't think any other answer could possibly top that one.
He slid his hand over hers. "I think of you often."
"You do?"
"No." He grinned at her frown. "It is more than often. You are rarely if ever far from my mind."
Her warm smile returned. "I suppose I am the same way."
Liam drummed up the courage to ask her out. "Elisse, would you--"
"Liam, I wanted to--" Riley's eyes widened at the pair on the couch. "Sorry. Drake told me he had seen you come in here. I didn't know you were still reviewing..."she noticed there wasn't one scrap of paper between them, "trade documents."
"We cleared that matter up quickly." Liam kept a hold on Elisse's hand. "Is there anything you need, Riley?"
"Yes, um, the ball. What exactly did you have planned?"
"Is there anything other than dancing, drinks, and food that Cordonians do at balls?" Elisse teased.
Liam chuckled. "Other than taking a moment to obsess over our apples, not really."
Riley narrowed her eyes. Their little jokes and touches were more serious than she thought.
"I wanted to come in and offer my help, if needed." She muttered.
"Thank you, but everything is under control."
Riley hesitated a moment. "Liam, Drake and I were hoping to speak with you," she glanced at Elisse, "privately."
Liam sighed softly. "I'll join you and Drake in the west drawing room in a moment."
"Okay." She couldn't think of a reason to stick around and see what was going to happen between him and the viscountess.
Once she shut the door, Elisse focused on Liam. "I suppose I should find Amalas."
"Not yet, please." He lowered his eyss to her hand in his. "Lady Elisse," he cleared his throat, "I was wondering if you would like to have dinner with me one night."
"Of course. I know we should to discuss the terms--"
"Not for work." He quickly interrupted. "I'm asking you for a date."
Elisse wondered if he could hear her heart pounding. "I would love to."
Liam released the breath he had been holding. "Then I will call you this evening and we will discuss the details."
She stood up, suddenly more nervous than she had been. "I look forward to it."
Liam lifted her hand to his lips. "So do I."
***********
"Drake, they were definitely not talking about trade deals." Riley paced back and forth. "He was holding her hand!"
"Take it easy." He placed his hands on her shoulders. "You know stress isn't good for you and the baby."
"What if Liam starts insisting that we sign an arranged marriage between our baby and Queen Amalas's son?" She cradled her small belly. "What will we do then?"
"We'll fix this." Drake reassured her. "Aren't you the one to point out how we always find a way to defeat those that come at us?"
She slowly nodded.
"Then don't worry." He pressed a tender kiss to her forehead. "We got this, Brooks."
The couple looked up when Liam came into the room.
“You wished to speak to me.” He sat down in one of the chairs.
“Liam,” Drake began, “what were you speaking to Elisse about?”
“We were discussing dinner plans this week.”
"Dinner plans? You have a date with Elisse?" Riley asked.
"Yes." Liam didn't bother to hide his smile. "We've had dinner and lunches together numerous times, but..." His voice held a hint of the true happiness he felt. "It has always been work related. I thought it was time for us to be together for no other reason than because we want to."
"But she's the Spy queen's cousin!" Riley exclaimed.
Liam quirked an eyebrow at her. "I know who her family members are."
Riley motioned to Drake to say something.
He cleared his throat. "Li, you know we only want to see you happy." He shifted under Liam's piercing gaze. "But we don't know if we can trust Amalas or anyone associated with her."
"I know I can." Liam's tone held a warning to not push him on this. "Elisse has never brought up the subject of your child marrying Amalas's son."
"She is probably waiting until you get more comfortable around her." Riley grumbled. "Seems like something a secret agent would do. Seduce the target into agreeing--"
Liam's hand slammed down on the end table next to him, causing the couple to jump in surprise.
"That's enough!" He snapped. His kingly authority reverberated within the formal drawing room. "I won't hear another word against Elisse." His blue eyes sparked with fury. "What proof do you have?"
"None." Riley stepped back from his glare. "Liam, you're so trusting that anyone can take advantage of your kindness."
"Yes," his soft tone scared them even more than his shouting. "I can see where you would both think that, given that I trusted you."
"Liam, what are you talking about?" Riley asked.
"I'm talking about the fact that nearly three years ago I trusted you with my heart." His eyes went from one to the other. "I laid it at your feet, Riley, and asked Drake to guard you while I tried to help uncover this conspiracy against you." He folded his arms. "If anyone shouldn't be trusted in this kingdom at the moment, it would be the two who betrayed me in the worst possible way."
Tear slipped down Riley's cheeks. "Liam, I...I thought you understood." She swallowed. "You stood there as Drake's best man at our wedding. You named our child your heir."
"Just because I understood, forgave you, and accepted it; that does not necessarily mean that I have forgotten." He replied. “I still trust you, but I have become more cautious in doing so.”
"Liam," Drake's voice cracked with regret. "I'm sorry. I had no idea you still felt--"
"I don't." Liam interrupted. "I haven't for a while now." His stance relaxed with his next words. “Since meeting Elisse, I have realized that I am able to move on from the past.”
He thought of the excitement he felt just in anticipating seeing her again. That desire to touch her. Finally feel what her lips against his. Seeing her smile. Holding her close.
He focused again on two people he still considered his best friends. "Regardless of what her cousin does, Elisse is innocent. She is the woman I intend on knowing on a personal level. You either support me in that and treat her with every bit of friendship and courtesy she deserves or you can return to Valtoria until you are able to do so."
With that, Liam left the couple with jaws dropped.
**************
Pier at Cordonia’s Capital a few nights later...
"Elisse?" Liam called out when he finally reached The Semblance sailboat.
She popped up from the galley. "Liam?"
His smile formed when she came over.
She climbed up the side, held onto the various ropes, and leaned forward. "Ready to come aboard?"
"You know, I'm not exactly fond of boats." He admitted. "One too many bad experiences."
Her smile turned tender. "I know. That's why we aren't going sailing." She tilted her head to where she had a table set. "I just wanted a spot where I could have you to myself."
Liam grabbed the same ropes and pulled himself until he was face to face with her. His lips curved at her slight intake of breath. "I could be on board with that."
She rolled her eyes playfully while groaning. Gripping his blazer she tugged him onto the boat. "Only you are cute enough to get away with that awful pun."
"I try." He teased.
She slipped her arm around him. "I hope you like what I prepared." Her eyes darted around as if she was worried someone would overhear. "Felix has been trying his hardest to teach me how to cook."
"Elisse, you shouldn't have gone to so much trouble." Liam tucked her long dark hair over her shoulder. "Just having a moment with you away from court and our duties is enough for me."
"Liam," she slid her arms up his chest, "I have a confession."
He placed his hands on her waist. "Oh?"
"Years ago, Amalas began a file on you." Her eyes darted to his lips before lifting once more to his crystal clear blue eyes. "And I read it."
Liam grimaced. "It sounds like you're about to say something I'm not going to like."
Her tender smile caused him to pause in pulling away.
"On the contrary," she stepped closer to him, "everything I read, I liked." Her dark brown eyes held his. "That's why I hope you like everything I've done."
Unable to resist the temptation any longer, Liam captured her lips in a heated kiss.
Her fingers tangled in his hair as he continued the sweet exchange.
Their eyes met as they began to part, only for them both to rush forward in a more passionate kiss.
"Liam." She said in a breathless voice when his lips brushed her cheek. "I've been waiting on you to do that for months now."
He chuckled, cuddling her close. "You have no idea how often I wanted to shove everything off my desk and yank you on it."
Her eyes twinkled. "I might have had similar thoughts."
He thought his face was in danger of being set in a permanent goofy grin.
A breeze brought their attention back to the carefully set table.
"I don't want to let your dinner go to waste." He murmured, kissing her neck.
"It probably tasted horrible anyway." She smiled at hearing his laughter. "I would like to get a second date out of this. My dinner might have sent you running as far away from me as you can."
"It wouldn't." He pressed his forehead against hers. "I have no intention of running away from you, Elisse."
Her smile took his breath away. With a slight joyful squeal, she kissed him once more.
"Would you like to lay here and watch the stars appear?" She motioned toward another section of the boat she had piled with an air mattress, blankets, and pillows. A bucket with chilled champagne was on hand with two glasses.
"Love to." He let her go, watching as she retrieved some strawberries and set them nearby their pallet.
He popped the champagne and filled their glasses.
"What should we toast to?" He asked.
"To the longest waited first date ever." She tapped her glass against his. "And how happy I am to finally be here with you."
Liam held her gaze as he downed his glass. He set it to the side and pulled her back in his arms. "Nowhere near as happy as I am."
****************
A few ships over, Olivia lowered her binoculars.
“The date seems to be going well.” She whispered.
“Do you think she can be trusted?” Hana asked.
“There’s only one way to know for sure.” Olivia passed the binoculars to her accomplice. “We need to dig up all we can on the viscountess and queen from Monterisso as well as everything I can on Auvernal’s monarchs.”
“If Liam falls in love with her,” Hana took a deep breath, “it will hurt him horribly if we discover she is using him.”
“He’s already been through so much.” Olivia murmured. “I don’t want to be the one to deliver news like that to him.”
“But we promised Riley we would investigate Elisse.” Hana shifted. “Do you think she is wrong about suspecting her?”
“I--” For the first time, Olivia doubted they needed to spy on Elisse. “I honestly don’t know.”

Chapter 2 Confirmation
Liam gave orders to the staff to take his bags upstairs on the way to his study.
The past few weeks spent exclusively with his friends, trapped in a rental car and small farmhouse, had exhausted him. He longed to go up to his room for a moment of solitude. No thoughts. No conversations. No reliving that moment.
He closed his eyes as he sat down behind his desk. Unbidden and unwanted, his mind brought the image of Drake and Riley to mind.
"We have something we need to tell you." Drake said once Liam, Hana, and Maxwell sat down.
"Is something wrong?" Hana asked.
Riley shook her head, unshed tears formed as Drake cuddled her closer in his arms.
The couple locked eyes before taking a deep breath.
"We're pregnant!" They shouted.
Maxwell whooped and jumped up to hug them both. Hana followed, exclaiming how happy she was.
Thankfully no one noticed the only person in the room who remained sitting down.
No, Liam thought. He wasn't sure why that denial whispered through his mind. He only knew he didn't want to hear this. See it. Be forced to witness every moment.
He made himself stand to congratulate them. Somehow the words came.
"I'm thrilled for you both." He even managed to smile. "This is the best kind of news."
"Oh! Let's go shopping for the baby to celebrate!" Hana exclaimed.
Everyone else agreed, making their way out the door. Hana paused, glancing back at Liam.
"Aren't you coming?" She asked.
"Of course." He shook himself out of his daze. "I need to retrieve something from upstairs."
She smiled at him. "Hurry."
As soon as the screen door shut, he allowed his smile to disappear. His steps were heavy as he climbed up the stairs.
He hesitated as he walked past the bedroom Drake and Riley had been using since their arrival at the Walker ranch.
The walls were thin. Too thin. He heard everything at night as he tried to sleep in the other bedroom.
There were many nights that he had to leave the house and take a walk just to escape hearing them express and demonstrate their love to one another.
If they had not gotten pregnant after all that, then they never would, he thought.
The moment he parted from them outside the palace, he felt the stress of keeping his feelings buried disappear. He was able to breathe again. Frown if he wanted to without anyone asking what was wrong. Remain silent for the next few weeks if he was so inclined.
He could focus again what was most important: running his kingdom.
Even if it is for someone else's child.
He pinched the bridge of his nose. Irritation rose within him that he even had that type of thought. He had chosen this himself. No one forced him to. Why was he now experiencing bitterness when he should be rejoicing? His best friends had done what he had asked. They were pregnant with the royal heir.
What more could I possibly ask for?
"Liam? I hope I'm not interrupting."
He stood up with a tired smile. "Not at all. How were things while I was away?"
Regina eyed him for a moment. "Everything went well. We had requests from a few of the visiting monarchs to rent some of the vacant manors outside the capital."
"Oh? Hoping to use proximity to sway Drake and Riley's decision, I take it."
"Indeed." She sat down across from him. "I gave them permission to do so." A slight smile touched her lips. "If nothing else, we will have nearly a year's worth of rent from these people."
Liam chuckled. "True."
Her expression became serious once more. "Liam, dear..."
He cocked an eyebrow when she didn't continue.
"As difficult as this must be, we will need Drake and Riley to be here for a press conference as soon as possible." She averted her eyes when she saw the brief flash of anguish on his face. "The country has been anxiously awaiting for an announcement."
"I see." He rubbed a hand down his face. "I will let them know." He cleared his throat deciding to change the subject. "Which monarchs are staying in Cordonia?"
"Many, like the King and Queen of Auvernal   are dividing their time between here and their kingdoms." She explained. "The only one needing use of a manor for the entire pregnancy is Queen Amalas."
"Really?" Liam's brow furrowed. "That’s strange. She doesn't strike me as the kind of ruler to leave her duties for so long."
"You're right. That's why she intends for her cousin, Viscountess Millan, to be here the entire time and act as her proxy when she is back in Monterisso."
Liam straightened in his chair. "Lady Elisse is moving here?"
"According to Queen Amalas." Regina replied. "As soon as she is back from America, she will be settling at Cranborne Manor."
"She's in America?" He wondered why she would be there. He knew Amalas had surprised Riley and the other ladies at Savannah's bachelorette party. Her brief visit had struck them all as odd.
Was Elisse following us? Is that how Amalas knew where we were?
"Yes, she is. Boston, I think is where the queen said Lady Elisse was going. How was the wedding?" Regina' s voice cut through his thoughts. "The papers here have spent weeks documenting every little thing." She grimaced slightly. "They are eating it up that the Walker siblings made such advantageous marriages."
That's how Amalas knew where to find us. She had seen it in the news.
Liam relaxed some at that mystery being solved.
"Liam?"
"Forgive me." He apologized. "I think the jet lag is causing me to zone out."
"Then you need to go upstairs and rest."
"But I--"
"No arguments." She took his arm and tugged him toward the door. "There is nothing on that desk that demands your immediate attention."
He looked down at her with an affectionate smile on his lips. Once at the main stairs, she released him. Liam surprised her with a hug and kiss to her cheek.
"Thank you." He said softly. "For commanding me to do so."
She gently patted his cheek. "Anytime, dear."
*****************
Monterisso's Royal Palace...
"Don't go, Lisse." Josip rubbed his eyes before launching himself into Elisse's arms.
"I'll be back." Elisse promised, hugging him tight. "And you can come visit me when Mommy comes." She tilted his little cherub face up. "We'll have new places to play." She dropped her voice to a whisper. "And all the cupcakes we want. Your mommy will never know."
"I heard that." Amalas yelled out from Elisse's closet.
Josip giggled at his mother's tone.
"What are you looking for?" Elisse yelled back.
"That black ballgown of yours." Amalas stepped out with hands on her hips. "The one that caused Lord Ashton to trip and land in the punch bowl."
Elisse rolled her eyes. "It wasn't the dress that caused that. It was his vanity in not wanting to be seen wearing glasses."
"I think it was the dress." She returned to her search. A triumphant yell sounded after a few more minutes.
"You're packing this and wearing it." Amalas said in her queenly tone. "That is a direct order, by the way."
"Hmm." Elisse picked up the little prince. "What do you think? Should I mind mommy?"
"Yes!" He replied with another giggle.
"See." Amalas smiled, "even the prince agrees."
"Very well." Elisse set him down. "I can't fight you both."
"I want you to wear it at the next ball Liam hosts." Her cousin instructed.
"Amalas." Elisse drew out the syllables. "Stop."
"Why? You’re clearly attracted to him."
"You know why." Elisse snapped. "I can't--"
"He's already taken care of that!" Amalas argued. "You could be with him without any pressure."
Elisse zipped her suitcase. "I'm going to Cordonia to represent you, not to romance Liam."
Amalas folded her arms. "If you change your mind, know that I would be thrilled both as your cousin and queen for you to be with him."
The viscountess sighed. "I'm not going to actively pursue him."
Elisse couldn't help but think of that moment in Valtoria's ballroom when he asked her to dance. The way it felt to be in his arms. Talking to him.
A smile appeared as she faced Amalas. "But I won't say no if he decides to pursue me."
****************
The Royal Gardens, Cordonia, a week later...
"Drake and I are so excited." Riley told reporters. "I can't wait to meet our son or daughter."
Cameras flashed as she continued to answer questions.
Liam stood off to the side with a well practiced expression of delight on his face. His eyes swept over the crowd of nobles and members of the press.
He paused when he saw Elisse.
As if sensing she was being watched, she began to turn her head from side to side.
Their eyes met. She sent a smile his way, causing his own to respond.
With a tilt of his head toward the back of the crowd, he made his way over as she did the same.
"Welcome back to Cordonia." Liam kept his voice to barely above a whisper.
"Thank you." She replied. "I am glad to be here again."
"How do you find Cranborne Manor?"
"It's beautiful." Elisse responded. "I love being right on the ocean." She glanced over at the press conference still going. "I slept with my window open last night so I could hear the waves hitting the shore."
"I haven't been to Cranborne in years." Liam slipped his hands in his pockets, relaxing his kingly stance.
"Oh?" She lowered her eyes. "You are more than welcome to stop by and see it."
Liam grinned and also looked away. "I might just take you up on that offer."
She peeked at him from beneath her lashes. "I had thought of taking advantage of the perfect weather and spending a day on the beach tomorrow."
"That sounds nice." He lifted his eyes to hers.
"It's a shame I don't know too many people in Cordonia." She clasped her hands behind her back. "I wouldn't mind some company." Her lips curved slightly. "I might even be willing to pack a picnic."
"Might be willing?" His smile turned a touch flirty. "And what should one expect from a picnic you pack?"
She bit her lip, turning slightly away. "Mostly items that no one deems healthy." Her eyes cut to him. "Everything that tastes good and probably wouldn't appear at a formal court dinner."
He shifted closer to her. "That does sound tempting."
Liam cleared his throat. "Hypothetically speaking, what time would you go out to the beach?"
"Around noon." Elisse couldn't control her smile. "Hypothetically speaking of course."
"Of course."
The crowd began to disperse. Members of the press were packing up their equipment while nobles mingled at the garden party.
"Looks like we better catch up."
Liam wondered if he was imagining the faint note of reluctance in her voice.
He offered his arm to her. "Shall we, m'lady?"
She slipped her hand into the bend of his arm. "Thank you, your majesty."
****************
"Who is that with Liam?" Riley asked.
Maxwell craned his neck to see who she was talking about.
"Hmm. Not sure but I think I've seen her before." He muttered.
"That's Queen Amalas's cousin." Hana said once she caught a glimpse. "From what Madeleine said, she will be remaining here to act as proxy for Monterisso's monarch."
"Liam said he would spend time with her to see if the Spy Queen has any hidden motives." Drake added. His eyes narrowed somewhat at Elisse's ability to hold Liam's attention. "I don't trust her."
The group of friends watched silently as Liam made her laugh on their way to join a group of other visiting foreign nobles.
Overhearing Drake's opinion, Olivia stepped up beside Hana.
"Monterisso has been a country that keeps mostly to itself." Her sharp green eyes remained on the viscountess. "I can't recall the last time any representative from their country visited Cordonia."
"Perhaps it is time to flip the tables on them." Maxwell suggested. "Spy on the spies."
"Isn't that what Liam is doing?" Riley asked. Worry for her friend began to appear on her face. "Do you think he is safe with her?"
"Liam can take care of himself." Hana replied. Her own worry reflected in her eyes. "But I'm worried she will use him in other ways."
"Maybe we should talk to him." Riley slipped her arm around Drake. "What do you think?"
Drake's lips parted, hesitating on whether or not they should interfere. "We'll play it by ear for now. Until we see Liam acting differently, we need to stay out of his way as he tries to gain information."
*******************
The next day, Cranborne Manor's private beach...
"You look much more relaxed today."
"I am. I didn't realize how much I needed a break from everyone."
Elisse chuckled before standing up. "Everyone? I suppose that's my cue to leave."
Liam scrambled upright to snag her hand in order to stop her.
With a laugh, she dodged it and ran off toward the water.
His smile came unbidden as he chased after her.
What am I doing?
That thought caused him to falter once he was waist deep in the ocean.
Elisse popped up out of the water, beside him.
"Is something wrong?" She asked once she pushed her damp clumps of hair out of her eyes.
Liam's gaze drifted over her. The wet, coffee colored hair. Bronze skin glistening with suntan oil and drops of water. Lips that were usually turned up in a warm smile were now in a thin, concerned line. Deep brown eyes that reminded him of dark chocolate. The black bathing suit that highlighted her beauty. He took it all in within a second or two.
I really am attracted to her.
He slowly shook his head. "Nothing's wrong, m'lady."
What am I to do now?
Her smile reappeared. "M'lady? I thought a certain king insisted that today we lose all titles."
He chuckled. "He sounds very intelligent."
"I certainly think he is." She reached for his hand. "Come on. There are a number of desserts in that picnic basket that I want to eat but also need an accomplice to finish them off."
"Should I be concerned with your sugar addiction?" Liam teased.
"Only when you find me eating sugar cubes without a pot of tea or coffee nearby." She teased back.
"I'll make certain to have the Royal guards take up sentry duty by the palace pantry."
"That will cause me to have to smuggle sweet treats into your country." She shook her head sadly. "What would the punishment be for such actions?"
"The most severe one we have." His tone playfully turned sinister. "You will have to watch Cordonia's ruler eating it all in front of you without offering you a single bite."
She gasped dramatically, placing a hand over her heart. "I never knew how brutal you could be."
"One has to be with smugglers like you." He winked at her as he helped her unpack the rest of goodies she had brought.
She laughed softly, her own body relaxing in the warm sun and his company.
"I'm glad you took my hypothetical invitation and came by today."
Liam polished off the rest of a vanilla cream puff before responding. "I'm glad you offered it." His lips curved. "Hypothetically."
She opened another container filled with various chocolate covered fruits. Her teasing smile turned a touch serious. "This is my first time living somewhere other than Monterisso."
"It is?"
"Yes." She picked up a strawberry covered in white chocolate. She focused on the waves as she spoke. "I always knew there was a chance of marrying someone who lived in a different country. But, I never imagined living somewhere else alone."
Liam glanced back toward Cranborne. He knew her intimidating bodyguard was most likely watching over them. "You're not completely alone."
"You mean Felix?" She laughed softly. "True. It is hard to ignore his presence." She reclined back on her beach towel. "He's that older brother I always needed growing up."
"Keeps you out of trouble?"
"That and isn't afraid of letting me know when I do something he thinks is foolish." She closed her eyes. "He has stood by me during some difficult moments in my life."
Liam stretched out on his side after removing the picnic basket that sat between them. "It's nice to have a source of comfort."
"Yes, it is." She turned her head and met his steady blue gaze. "It seems you have quite a few that are that for you."
"Yes." Liam averted his eyes. "I suppose I do."
"Liam, may I ask you something personal?" She turned on her side facing him. "If you don't wish to answer, I won't pressure you."
"What is it you wished to ask?"
"Why did you decide to name an heir instead of marrying someone and producing your own?"
His silence made her wish she hadn't ruined this day with her curiosity. He probably despised her for the audacity of even thinking she could ask him something like that.
Though it felt like she had always known him from rereading his file every chance she got, he didn't know her.
Her lips parted to apologize and take back her question.
"I think..." Liam began. "I think I did it out of selfish reasons." He grimaced at voicing what he had hoped wasn't true about himself. "I needed a way to take some time from being pressured about my finding a queen for Cordonia." He lifted his eyes to hers. "And I've used the excuses that I secured the throne and gave an honor to my closest friends."
Liam searched her face for repulsion or disapproval.
He saw nothing but a hint of sadness and sympathy.
"It's horrible, isn't it?" He asked.
"No." She replied. "It's not. From what I know about you, you have been put in some very difficult spots these last few years. You unexpectedly being named the crown prince. Forced to choose a bride to become king. Trying to break away from such tradition. Terrorists." Elisse placed her hand on top of his and gently squeezed. "Who wouldn't want a moment to step back from all that had been asked of him?"
He turned his hand over so he could hold hers. "Thank you, Elisse."
She smiled at him. Her eyes drifted over his handsome face in contented silence.
"May I ask a personal question?"
She nodded. "Of course. It wouldn't be fair for me to be the only one allowed."
"Why didn't you take part in my social season?" Liam braced himself for her answer.
He did not expect the sight of tears forming in her eyes.
"You don't know?" Her voice cracked.
"No." He gently gripped her hand. "I'm sorry, I--"
"Your father didn't want me to take part after the results of his required health examination." Elisse closed her eyes, trying to keep from crying.
"Health examination?" Liam's brow furrowed. "Why would that have any importance?"
"Because you are a king who needs to have heirs for the throne." She said softly.
"Yes, but why would--" Realization came over Liam. "Elisse."
She nodded in a jerky manner.
He couldn't stand to see her so hurt. Ignoring the question his mind asked of why he was doing this, he gently pulled her into his arms.
She buried her face against his shoulder while she silently cried.
Liam closed his eyes, dropping his head against hers. He couldn't help but think how ironic it was. Here was a lady he might very well have realized was the one he should marry that his father kept from him. And yet, he was now a single king with no heir from his bloodline.
If Constantine was not already dead, this surely would have caused it.
Liam looked at Elisse's face when she slowly pulled away.
"I'm sorry." She bit her bottom lip. "I didn't mean to put a damper on our day at the beach.
"You didn't." He reassured her. A bittersweet smile curved his lips. "I had hoped to get to know you."
She delicately blew her nose. "I did too."
Liam tenderly cupped her cheek, drawing her attention back to him.
"Elisse?"
She lifted an eyebrow.
"I think," Liam hesistated. "I wish you had been allowed to come for that season."
She swallowed a touch nervously. "I wish I had too."

Misfortune's Intentions

(Liam x OC*Elisse Millan) (Drake x Riley) in a Choices The Royal Heir fan fiction
A/N Time continues to go by. Riley is nearing the end of her second trimester. Liam and Elisse will have their first date in front of the court during a ball he is hosting. The two have managed to have a few private dates since that one on a sailboat. While they continue to fall for one another, concerns and words are shared by those closest to them. This chapter mentions a certain event that happened later in the TRH canon, but I added it now and of course ended it like I wished.

Chapter 4 Moonlight and Secrets
Cranborne Manor, Cordonia...
"Aren't you glad I had you bring this?" Amalas held up the black ball gown. "I know Liam will be."
Elisse's cheeks heated with color. "If I say yes, will you stop talking about my going as his date?"
"Why? I think it's actually sweet that he asked you." Amalas leaned down to smell the roses that had arrived earlier. "Even though I'm not a romantic like some people I know," she smiled at her cousin, "I can still be happy that you found someone that you actually like."
"I should have known you wouldn't be able to stop talking." Elisse teased. "I'm nervous enough as it is."
She snatched the card Liam had sent with the roses out of Amalas's hands.
"Elisse?" A wicked smile formed. "What did he write?"
"Nothing to concern yourself over." She dodged her trying to grab it. "Amalas! Is this any way for a queen to behave?!" She turned holding it as far away from her as she could.
All the commotion they made drew an anxious Felix into the room.
One look at the two climbing over furniture while chasing each other let him know exactly what was going on.
"Elisse!" Amalas dodged a bed pillow. "You would dare strike your queen?!"
"Without any regret whatsoever." Elisse tripped over the bottom of her robe and went tumbling down.
Amalas pounced, snatching the card away.
"Aha!" She held it above her head in victory.
Felix plucked it from her grasp.
"Felix!" She rounded on him. "Hand that over."
"Yes, your majesty." With all the seriousness he could muster, he handed it to Elisse.
"Ha!" Elisse held it against her heart. "Thank you, Felix."
"What is this treason?" Amalas had her hands on her hips. Her usual intimidating frown was ruined by her hair sticking up at odd angles.
"Forgive me your majesty," he bowed, "but I was under the impression you wanted it to go to its owner."
"In other words," Elisse loudly whispered, "Felix likes me better."
The cousins burst into giggles much as they used to before Amalas became queen.
Felix quietly shut the door before allowing a smile to appear on his face. After all that had occurred for his queen and lady, he had forgotten how infectious their happiness could be.
"Tell the truth." Amalas sat down on the bed. "You're falling in love with Liam."
Elisse sat down once more at her vanity. Amalas could see the soft glow on her face in the reflection of the mirror as she looked down at his card.
"He makes it impossible not to fall in love." She shyly admitted.
"Looks like whatever happens, I will still have an alliance with Corodnia."
Elisse glared playfully at her. "You're runing the romance."
"Then I guess Liam will have his work cut out for him tonight."
****************
Cordonia's Royal Palace, Riley and Drake’s chambers...
"While they are here, maybe you could sneak over to Cranborne and see if you find anything that we should know." Riley whispered.
Olivia's brow furrowed. "I've been investigating Elisse. Nothing except for her time spent in America has been found. She has spent most of her life in Monterisso."
"I think if Amalas is planning anything, her cousin is not a part of it." Hana added.
Riley closed her eyes. She knew she was becoming obsessive over this woman. But after hearing Liam's confession of how he felt toward her and Drake. She owed him a lady he could freely love who wouldn't betray him.
Though she loved Drake more than anyone, she easily remembered those times she snuck off with Liam during his social season. The butterflies and sweet moments had caused her to fall for him as well as his grumpy friend.
She knew if Drake had continued to push her away, she might have given in and married Liam.
And how much more horrible would I have been to do that while longing for his best friend?
"This will be the last time." She told them. "If nothing is discovered of her time in America or that she and Amalas are planning something nefarious for Cordonia, then I will accept that Liam is safe with Elisse."
"Very well." Olivia stood up. "We'll let you know what we find."
"Or hopefully don't find." Hana added as she followed her out.
Riley dabbed at the stray tears in her eyes with a tissue. Between concerns over Elisse and Liam and having to keep from making an arranged marriage for her yet to be born baby was getting to her.
There were numerous times she secretly wished she had never agreed to have the royal heir. It is too much to deal with. Her pregnancy wasn't going at all like she used to dream about.
For one thing, it had happened much sooner than she had wanted. She would have loved to have had a year or two of just her and Drake trying to figure out how to be Cordonia's newest Duke and Duchess. Plus it would have been nice to enjoy being a newlywed that could wear lingerie and go out on fun, late night dates with her husband.
But to give birth to the, "chosen one," was driving her crazy. All the photos taken of her. The more than usually required doctor visits. The lack of privacy. The events. Having everyone with them with no time alone with her husband...
"Dammit!" She couldn't stop her tears. Her makeup was ruined.
"Riley?" Drake poked his head into their room. "What's wrong?"
She hurried into his embrace.
He rubbed soothing circles on her back. "Hormones?"
"Yes." She then shook her head. "No. I don't know."
He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "You know you can talk to me." He swallowed nervously. "Even if it is about Liam?"
"It's not him." She reached for more tissues. "It's us. Me, you, the baby. Our life." She blew her nose. "No privacy. No time to take in the fact that in three months we will have someone to take care of."
He continued to hold her.
"And this whole royal heir business." She lifted her eyes to his. "Do you really want our baby to be in line for the throne?"
She saw the hesitation flicker in his face.
"We owe Liam so much." He said. "He has asked so little from us. This seemed like the least we could do and it is an honor he wanted our child for that position."
"Drake we are deciding our child's entire future without even meeting him or her." She reminded him. "What if the baby is like you and prefers to live a quiet life? We will have forced the one we want to protect into the very position that takes away every freedom they have."
Drake lowered his eyes. "I know."
She hugged him close. "What are we going to do?"
"I--I don't know." He held her tight. "I just don't know."
***************
A few hours later, Cranborne Manor...
Elisse took a deep breath on the way to answer the front door.
"M'lady," Liam handed her a long stem red rose. "You look beautiful."
"Thank you." She let her eyes travel over him in his formal regalia. "You look very handsome."
His smile turned flirty. "Are you ready for our first ball as a couple?"
With a nod, she retrieved her clutch and took his hand. "Liam?"
"Yes?"
"Are you sure about this?" She whispered when they reached Bastien holding the car door for them.
Liam took both of her hands in his. "I am."
"Even though I can't--"
He pressed a tender kiss to her lips, cutting off her reason for doubting he should be with her.
"You're who makes me happy." He whispered against her lips. "Regardless of whether or not you can have children."
She cupped his cheek and pressed another tender kiss to his lips in quiet gratitude.
He smiled softly as she got into car's backseat then followed after her.
Once the vehicle turned a corner, Olivia and Hana sneaked out of their hiding place.
"Queen Amalas left with her bodyguard earlier." Olivia whispered. "We will have free reign to search the house."
Hana shivered in the cool night air. "I suppose we should be grateful for that."
She watched quietly as the duchess expertly picked the lock.
"After you." She waved Hana inside.
***************
The Royal Ballroom...
Conversations were focused on one thing this evening: Liam had brought a date to the ball.
Regina went from group to group saying how happy she was that he had settled on a lady that she so highly approved of.
"It is rare to find someone who understands the pressure he is under. Lady Elisse is a pleasure to be around." She said while she and a few others watched the two waltz.
Nobles soon were murmuring praises and wishes to see Liam settle down with Elisse.
"Monterisso and Cordonia's alliance under their marriage would make us the envy to many of the surrounding countries."
"Seeing a young king settle down would add more reassurance to foreign powers about the stability of our country."
"They do make a cute couple." Penelope whispered to Zeke.
Amalas chuckled softly at overhearing this latest compliment. She caught her cousin's eye and lifted her champagne flute to her.
Elisse's blush responded to that.
Liam's smile was warm when he noticed it. He leaned closer to her ear and whispered something that caused her to laugh with a shake of her head.
Elisse then was seen looking up at him with an expression that could only be described as complete adoration.
"You've been busy."
Amalas took a steadying breath before responding.
"King Bradshaw." She inclined her head. "I think we have all been busy in Cordonia."
He hmphed. "Some of us though aren't wooing the king and parents of the heir."
She kept her face devoid of emotion while she sipped her champagne.
He narrowed his eyes at her silence. "I see you aren't denying it."
"I've yet to hear an accusation worth addressing." She smiled sweetly as she walked away. "Do give my best to Isabella."
**************
Another hour later...
"Shouldn't you be making the rounds?"
Liam wrapped his arm around his date. "I should but I would rather stand here with you."
"You won't hear any arguments from me." Elisse closed her eyes when she felt his lips brush her cheek. "People will talk if you keep that up."
"It's about time I gave them something new to gossip over." He teased.
"I can hear them now. Our king has been captured by that wicked Monterisso viscountess."
He snorted. "I doubt they would use the word wicked." He tugged her closer. "Most likely conniving."
Her overly dramatic gasp made him laugh.
"I suppose I should be using my feminine whiles on you." She looped her arms around his neck. "But you, sir, are simply too distracting."
"A Monterisson noble unable to do her job?" He shook his head in mock pity. "I suppose I will have to keep you here rather than allow you to return home in shame."
"Why, your majesty. Is this a scheme to keep me at your beck and call?"
"You caught me, m'lady." His teasing smile turned tender.
"Ahem."
The two were surprised to see Olivia standing behind them.
"Liam, may I speak to you about something?" Her eyes darted briefly to Elisse. "In your study?"
Elisse stepped out of his arms.
"I'll be back." He promised her. He lifted her hand to his lips, enjoying the moment her smile reappeared.
With a nod to Olivia, he followed her out of the ballroom.
****************
"You did what?!" Liam's eyes narrowed. "Who told you to break into their home?"
Hana fidgeted beside Olivia. "Riley was worried with all the secrets Amalas is known to have and--"
"And--" Olivia glanced at Hana, receiving a nod, "some of us were concerned since you seem to be close to the queen's cousin."
He paced before them, doing his best to not lose his temper. "I know better than most about Monterisso."
"Liam, they have a file on you." Hana explained. "Files on all of us!"
"That isn't that surprising." Olivia grumbled. "I had files on all the ladies during the social season." A brief expression of admiration appeared. "I would have done the same to Amalas and Elisse if we were visiting their country."
"I already knew about the files." He told them.
"You did?"
"How?"
"Elisse." Liam ceased his pacing and faced them. "She has been nothing but honest with me."
"Did she tell you that there is a chance she--" Hana hesitated, wishing she hadn’t read the letters from Boston. "She--"
"Can't have children." Olivia finished softly. "We saw some medical reports in her room." Her sharp gaze softened. "She went through an experimental procedure to--"
"I know all of that." Liam interrupted. "She...she was supposed to be a part of my social season." His features hardened with memories. "My father refused to let her after her medical exam."
He snapped out of those what if thoughts. "Now then. Go tell Lady Riley to back off. There is nothing--"
Muffled screams filled the air.
"What was that?!" Hana jumped when Liam ran out the door.
"Liam!" Olivia shouted, already pulling two hidden daggers out. "Wait!"
******************
The Ballroom...
Everyone stared in horror at the drone that had crashed through the window. Queen Isabella trembled in her husband's arms with cuts along her face and arms.
"I recognize that." King Bradshaw pointed at Amalas. "This is one of the Spy Queen’s drones!"
Elisse surreptitiously made her way to Amalas's side and gripped her hand. The two remained calm as Bradshaw and Isabella riled the crowd up.
"I nearly died!" Isabella held up her arms with minor cuts. "My children could have been motherless all because she can't take a chance on Duchess Riley choosing us."
Riley paled as she looked from one ruler to another. Her hands slid protectively to her belly, wishing there was a way to get out of all this.
"I refuse to see Cordonia be threatened in such a fashion." Bradshaw straightened his shoulders. "Do not fear. My guards will--"
Liam appeared.
"King Liam!" Isabella cried out, tears streaking down her face. "Look--"
He held his hand up for silence as he examined the broken drone.
The whole court waited while he knelt beside it.
Bastien rushed to his side. "Sir, we need to get you to safety--"
"No we don't." Liam told him.
"Sir, it--"
Liam ordered him to be quiet as he turned the drone over. His lips firmed into a slight frown.
Olivia finally made it through the crowd, stopping in surprise at the piece of machinery on the ballroom floor.
"The Monterissons must be made to leave at once!" Isabella cried when Bradshaw quietly whispered to her.
"Unless you too want to be added to our list of enemies." Bradshaw warned.
Olivia's eyebrow raised. "Because of this?"
"That weapon nearly killed my wife." Bradshaw bit out.
"Strange." Liam finally said as he stood up. "One would think Queen Amalas would use one of her newer stealth drones instead of this one from five years ago."
Bradshaw and Isabella stilled.
"Given that you both say it attacked, I would have thought it would at least have been fitted with some type of weapon on it instead of an outdated camera." He continued.
The king and queen looked about at the crowd’s fear turning to confusion
"She's spying on us!" Bradshaw exclaimed. "All of us were being watched."
"She must be planning on eliminating all competition!" Isabella pointed at Elisse. "And that one was used to distract your king, Cordonia!"
Murmurs began again.
"They shouldn't be allowed to stay here." Godfrey muttered.
"What if one of us had been struck with that drone?" Kiara was heard to whisper.
"Did they see everything we have been doing? What if they begin to blackmail us?!" Adelaide added.
Bradshaw smirked at Amalas as the murmurs grew louder, demanding that she and Elisse be forced to leave.
Liam could feel a sense of déjà vu. Memories of his coronation ball came to mind.
This very crowd had demanded that Riley be thrown out of Cordonia and thus out of his life. He had stood by quietly and let it happen, thinking he was protecting her.
He knew whatever love she had for him had been damaged in that moment.
He could still see Drake demanding the King's Guards let her go. His volunteering to go to New York for her. His promise to look out for her once she joined the engagement tour.
I can't let it happen again. I can't lose Elisse. Not now. Not when I know I'm falling in love with her.
He stepped protectively in front of Elisse and Amalas while Felix guarded their backs. Liam could feel his lady’s fingers brush his hand in need of reassurance.
"This drone proves nothing." He said, cutting off everyone's conversations. "Queen Amalas and Lady Elisse had nothing to do with this."
"How do you know that?" Bradshaw demanded.
"Because," Amalas stepped forward, "this particular drone requries a remote operator to fly it." She patted her suit pockets. "Which I nor Lady Elisse could possibly have on us, given it takes two hands to even hold the controler."
"Your guard!" Isabella lifted a trembling finger. "He--"
Felix emptied his pockets without a word. He handed his coat to Bastien and allowed him to pat him down.
"Perhaps we should check Auvernal's many guards." Lady Elisse countered as she stepped up beside Liam. She maintained her calm demeanor while facing the two that threatened her. "There might be one or two who are not happy with their king and queen."
Amalas smirked. "I worry for the intelligence of this person. To use a drone that is now no more than a child's plaything." She chuckled. "Of course, Auvernal isn't known for their brilliant minds."
"How dare you!" Bradshaw shouted. "My wife--"
"Is unharmed." Liam spoke over him.
One of Bastien’s agents returned with an Auvernal guard.
Isabella quickly rushed forward, striking the man when the remote control was discoverd. "You will pay for attacking your queen!"
"But, your majesty, I--"
"Silence!" Bradshaw yelled over him. He ordered his personal guard to remove the traitor.
Liam slipped his hand in Elisse's when more murmurs rose around them. He knew it was time to turn the tables on the ones who still threatened the woman beside him.
"Honored guests," he turned to face the crowd, "given that an attack has occurred, I'm certain that King Bradshaw will wish to take his queen back to Auvernal." Liam's cold fury settled on the royal. "He would never wish to bring possible harm to those he wishes to make his allies."
Bradshaw gave a jerky nod. "Yes." He eyed Amalas. "I will go and quash this particular problem."
Regina joined Liam as she encouraged everyone else to also retire for the night.
"Liam," Elisse let go of his hand, "You shouldn't have gotten invovled in this. Bradshaw will not let that embarrassment go unanaswered."
He pulled her into his embrace. "I was not about to let them take you away."
Amalas held her hand out to him. "I believe I also owe you my own thanks for helping everyone to see reason, King Liam."
Felix gratefully bowed his head to him.
"I couldn't let mob mentality take over." Liam explained. "Bradshaw has been acting more agressive in gaining a foothold in my country. I refuse to let him do so."
Drake and Riley joined them once the last few guests of the ball trickled out.
"You should be resting." Amalas told her. "All of tonight's stress can't be good for you and the baby."
"I know." Riley replied. "Which is why I need to speak to Liam."
His brow furrowed when he noticed how pale she was. "Why don't we wait until morning? You--"
"I can't wait." Her eyes filled with tears. "It will only take a moment."
Elisse gently squeezed him in a hug. "Amalas and I should return to Cranborne." She smiled when he kept her within his arms. "I know you have things to take care of here."
Without paying attention to their friends and family around them, Liam kissed her goodnight. He cupped her cheek as he told her he would see her in the morning.
Once she was gone, Liam faced his friends and Regina. "What is it you need to discuss?"
Riley swallowed at the lump forming in her throat. "It's about our baby."
***************
Liam's chambers at two in the morning...
After yanking off all the regalia and unbuttoning his shirt, Liam poured himself three fingers of scotch.
He took a couple of healthy gulps, closing his eyes to the decision that had once again upended his world.
He was back to being a ruler in a tenuous position.
A king without a wife. Without heirs.
His head dropped as he slumped into a chair.
Cradling the cut crystal tumbler, he thought of the conversation he had with his friends.
***************
"Liam, I..." Riley swiped at her tears. "I don't want my baby to be the royal heir."
"What?" He took a step back in shock, just as he had when she told him she couldn't marry him. "Riley, I know tonight's--"
"It isn't just because of tonight." She interrupted. "It's everything. It's too much for us to deal with." She gripped Drake's hand. "I can't force my child into this type of responsibility."
"It was an honor that you chose us." Drake continued. "But the stress is eating away at us."
Liam slowly nodded. "I understand." He slipped his hands into his pockets. “We will have a press conference tomorrow.”
With a broken sob, Riley hugged him. "I'm so sorry I can't do this for you after everything you have given me."
He gently patted her back. "You don't owe me a child out of gratitude."
"I know." She sniffed and stepped back. "You will still be a part of our baby's life?"
He smiled softly. "Of course."
"Someone will have to teach our baby manners." Drake pulled Liam into a brief hug, slapping his back. "Thank you for understanding."
"It's what Liam does best." Riley added.
Olivia, Hana, and Regina remained with him once the couple left the ballroom.
"What will you do now?" Olivia asked.
"I...I don't know." He admitted.
"What will you do about Elisse?" Regina prodded. "If you don't choose another heir, you will need to have one of your own."
He ran his hands over his face. "I'm not losing Elisse."
"Dear, I know you care for her, but you--"
"I'm not losing her." He repeated harshly. "She is exactly what I need in my life."
Seeing it was fruitless to argue, the queen mother bowed her head and quietly left them.
Hana looked between Liam and Olivia, unable to think of something comforting to diffuse the tension.
"Liam." Olivia tempered her tone. "Regina's right. You still need an heir." She reached over and squeezed his hand. "Elisse will understand that you have to end--"
Without a word, he left the two ladies standing there.
