Amaretto Sour - Sometimes You Feel Like A Nut
Tumblr media
Amaretto Sours On Being Too Sweet
An Amaretto Sour is a drink mixed with amaretto almond flavored liqueur and lemon juice along with optional sugar and sometimes an egg white. It belongs to a family of cocktails known as sours, hence the name, which are defined as drinks containing a base liquor, lemon or lime juice, and a sweetener such as triple sec, grenadine, simple syrup, etc.
List Of Common Sours:
Daiquiri - rum, lime juice and sugar.
Gin Sour - gin, triple sec and lemon juice.
Kamikaze - vodka, triple sec and lime juice.
Margarita - tequila, orange liqueur and lime juice.
Pisco Sour - brandy, lime juice, simple syrup, egg white and bitters.
Sidecar - Cognac, triple sec and lemon juice.
Whiskey Sour - bourbon, lemon juice and sugar.
Notice a common theme? All the sours listed above contain a strong base liquor and the typical Amaretto Sour does not.* Plus, its almond flavored liqueur is already slightly sweet depending on the brand and can easily be overpowered with too much sugar.
Behind The Bar - How To Make An Amaretto Sour Cocktail At Home
Amaretto Sour Drink Recipe:
2 oz amaretto liqueur
1 oz lemon juice, fresh squeezed
1 tsp simple syrup (optional)
Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into an old fashioned glass filled with ice cubes or one large frozen sphere. Garnish with a lemon peel and maraschino or brandied cherries.
Note: An alternate method of preparation would be to skip the simple syrup and and add any desired sweetener by rubbing the rim of your glass with lemon juice and then dipping into granulated sugar to coat. All other steps are the same. Sip from the same area on your glass for less sugar or rotate while drinking to taste more sugar. You'll probably agree that less is more with this drink.
History Of The Amaretto Sour
Etymology
The name amaretto is a derivative of the Italian word amaro, which means ‘bitter’ and refers to the flavor of the mandorla amara (the bitter almond) or the drupe kernel (stone fruits, see below). Amaretto is not to be confused with amaro (a family of Italian herbal liqueurs) or with amore (love), although many do love to enjoy amaretto on occasion.
Tastes Like Almonds But Its Nut Necessarily Made From Them
You'll probably think this is nuts, but amaretto's distinctive bittersweet almond flavor isn't always from the seed of the tree of the same name. Many varieties use apricot pits, almonds or both.
Sort of reminds you of that old candy bar jingle:
Sometimes you feel like nut. Sometimes you don't.
Almond Joys got nuts. Mounds don't.
Almond Joy's got rich milk chocolate, coconut and munchy nuts too.
Mound's got deep dark chocolate and chewy coconut ooh.
Origin Of The Liqueur - A Tale Of Two Tales
Disaronno Originale, shown above, claims to be the oldest known formulation dating back to 1525 when it was presented as a gift to Leonardo da Vinci's pupil, artist Bernardino Luini, who was commissioned to paint the frescoes in a Saronno church. Their liqueur has been in commercial production since about 1900, however the word ‘amaretto’ was removed from bottle label as a branding strategy in 2001. Their Disaronno Sour recipe prior to 2016 followed a similar formula to the Amaretto Sour recipe above, however their formulation called for a 1.5/1 ratio of amaretto to lemon juice; was served in a tall glass; and was garnished with lime slices instead. Today its identical plus it adds an egg white.†
Lazzaroni Amaretto, known for their biscuits, panettone and bakery as well, also bills itself as the creator of the first such almond flavored liqueur which they affectionately refer to as their “liquid cookie” since it was used to flavor their famous Amaretti di Saronno macaroons and other baked goods.‡ In production since 1851, Wikipedia dates their family recipe back to 1718.1
Who Invented The Amaretto Sour And When?
The liqueur was first exported to the United States from Italy in the 1960s and although who remains a mystery, most agree the Amaretto Sour was created in the 1970s. Probably around the same time period as when the Godfather and the French Connection cocktails, two other famous mixed drinks with amaretto, were born.
