A Touch of Sin (2013) & Untitled (2013, from Venice 70: Future Reloaded)
Movies #1,106 & 1,107 • Part of My JIA ZHANGKE Director Focus
Alright party people and JZ-Heads, after a slew of somewhat interesting yet tedious documentary efforts, we return with the Chinese auteur's first proper work of fiction since 2006's fantastic Still Life.
In A Touch of Sin he utilizes a loose anthology approach similar to that movie, but with an even more overt, segmented approach. It's also his most violent picture by a wild margin (really his only violent film to date). It's also extremely good.
It's also of note that this is his only post-The World production that was banned in China, and supposedly not because of the violence. Depicting fictional adaptations of several real news stories (the Foxconn suicides for example), I guess it hit a little too close to home for his country's censors.
Though the character motivations are slight at best, I felt that added to the fragility of the intermingling narratives. We know just one thing for certain: that things are gonna come undone. It's a weird hyper-stylistic turn, not just with the violence but with the acting and action surrounding it. Especially after everything else has been so raw, realistic, and minimalist (those Still Life spaceships notwithstanding). Jia's wife and constant collaborator, Zhao Tao, is really hamming it up with this new flair for blood and guts...
That the final stanza — based loosely on the aforementioned Foxconn tragedies — ends only in self-harm is a poignant stamp. Violence is all around. It seeps from society and plagues the individual: both external and internal. Can an animal commit suicide? Of course it can.

People look at screens and weep in the two-minute untitled short from the Venice 70: Future Reloaded project which featured a whopping, you guessed it, 70 miniature movies from notable directors. It ends with a bunch of people looking at a screen in a mall. It's good.

The idiom 灯火阑珊处 denghuo lanshan chu comes from 青玉案·元夕 Qingyu an· Yuanxi by 辛棄疾 Xin Qiji, to describe a place as disordered and withering where little light reaches. The guardian stone lion was once worshiped is now sunk to the bottom of the river where the sun never sees.
捨吾有型 she wu you xing · I sacrifice myself, my form
In EP2 he says, “The strength of human heart is much stronger than skin, bones and flesh”. He was born out of people's worship, but as time passed, it faded away. He no longer serves his original purpose. However, Zheng Lisong’s obsession summoned him from the bottom the river once more.
生死无关 shengsi wuguan · To put all life and death behind
Final words to release him from his burdens as a guardian. He will never have to bear the responsibilities of life and death for those who had previously bestowed their wishes upon him.

Okay, please don't laugh, I'm into JJK, cause my danmei moot actually said, "So there is this non canon couple that kinda remind me of Hualian...." So according to them, Gojo remind them of Hua Cheng ("....even in chp 236, Gojo imagined Getou in his priest robe because Gojo will always accept Getou for who he is...) And I can see that. But what do you think, have you read danmei that remind you of SatoSugu? Even from many BL manga/manhwa that I've finished, I have not seen any couple that have SatoSugu's dynamics....
Your question literally made me list down every single danmei I've read to check if one of them actually reminds me of SatoSugu or not. 😂
Personally, I don't think HuaLian and SatoSugu is even close to each other. The "I will accept you for who you are" trope is way too broad, and it can be applied to countless pairings out there.
For me, SatoSugu's dynamics are:
Equally strong in their own way
One is indulging and the other likes to be indulged/spoiled
They have different principles and will sometimes argue about it, but they understand each other perfectly
One is calm and the other is unhinged, but they can be a menace together if they want
Honestly, Geto can sometimes be like a Mom for Gojo xD
I'm not really into manhwa so I can't say much about it, but just like you, I don't think I've found any danmei with main pairing dynamics that is exactly like SatoSugu.
That said, if we're just talking about one or two aspects, I can probably nominate:
Can Ci Pin (Lu Bixing x Lin JIngheng): LJH is very indulging of LBX
Liu Yao (Yan Zhengming x Cheng Qian): They are both strong (the strongest in the story) with their respective battle/fighting techniques; plus the white-and-black color them is pretty matching, too
Mo Du/Silent Reading (Luo Wenzhou x Fei Du): LWZ is such a worrywart that he will literally lecture Fei Du's improper lifestyle in every chance he got
Wu Shuang/Peerless (Feng Xiao x Cui Buqu): These two are similarly smart and they can't stop digging a pit for each other, but once they start working together, nobody can stop them
In the Dark (Shen Liufei x Xie Lanshan): They are two people with similar fate, which makes them on equal position in my eyes, and once they're together, it's like the world belongs only to them (they will flirt and spread sexual tension without caring about everybody else around them lol)
Again, I couldn't think of one danmei that perfectly matches SatoSugu's dynamic, but those five I mentioned above have something a little similar to them, I guess? xD

Started reading In The Dark, first chapter Nightmares:
Interesting vibes. Before anything else, I love the descriptions in this. I've been losing my own ability to spit out what the fuck Im trying to describe when writing lately, and the slightly poetic imagery but also to the point present tense of how this is written... it's really helping inspire me. (And of course, seeing quick examples of describing characters and buildings quickly without clumsiness but also still with some emotion is helpful)
Expectedly, the leads appear to be "two hot men" as is the bl usual ToT it is what it is. I'm partial to modu's babes still, but I'll get used to a new novel again lmao (what can I say? No character in a Long While is gonna top the fucking Captain China descriptions, the personality of priests characters screaming out so much that its ultimately the feeling of the character so unique and bizarre that you remember more than actual looks).
I am hoping, somehow, this novel's gonna be written as intelligently (as in intense themes, parallels, symbolism, points to make) as a priest novel. Im spoiled cause all the other chinese bl novels ive finished reading? Fucking excellent. I think my hopes are justified, tbh. If for no other reason than this writer doing some of my favorite shit: they name dropped a japanese murder author Ive read (and mentioned a plot of it im intrigued by), and they've left a TON of potential foreshadowing threads.
Said threads: opening, character dreams of a bloody woman? Could be a Fei Du (ish) situation where he did awful stuff and blacked it out. Could be a darker situation, where he's actually the bad guy/antihero/dangerous and we get a story from THAT point of view in some regard (which is a fascinating potential).
Character meets guy who clearly matches him, was at the theater for him, stalking him? At some prior point, started watching him first? Oh you know me. I like a slow burn. I like a long history (as long as its not childhood friends anything but that), i like rivals, its giving L X Light, Beyond Evil guys energy.
The movie playing: the stranger says he doesnt like roses. And the earlier quote from the murder novel, the Xie Lanshan remebering the quote that "even a demon essentially Id still love you." My prediction: one of them believes even cruel they'll love the other, but the other believes they'd stop loving and fight each other. This of course also implies: one will go darkside/be cruel/lose themselves/already is lost, and either that same one Or the other will not be loving the other when love is whats expected. Sort of the whole "youre a monster, but you wont hurt me" then the monster DOES hurt you. Or "even though youre a monster, ill still be here with you" (which is luo wenzhou 100 percent) but with the monster going "well that was a fucking mistake cause i am killing/betraying you now." If this novel likes foreshadowing, which i like, itll play with this AT LEAST in some case long arc. And ideally itll play out between the leading lovers. Which if so, is a story Id be interested in reading
And yes, i did go into this totally blind except knowing its (probably) a dark detective bl story. So we'll see how the predicting goes lol
For real though, i do really enjoy its writing style and the way its snappy but lingers just enough on painting images emotionally.

I'm reading In The Dark by Jin Shisi Chai and the recently introduced character I'm assuming is the ml just said "I'm naturally attracted to people's negative emotions" and I'm just lmao cause of the dynamic this promises. The mc Xie Lanshan is an absolute mess and I'm hoping for Shen Liufei to be like "oh wow you are completely fucked in the head I am going to study you like a bug" and go from there. 🤣
