Volkswagen T1 Raupen-Fux
The four-axle device was built in 1962 at the Hanover factory as an ordinary van, after which it found its way to its first Austrian owner. There he did his normal Transporter thing for a while, until Viennese auto mechanic and alpinist Kurt Kretzner got to work on it.
Kurt wanted a means of transportation that could take hunters, foresters, ski lift technicians and doctors for injured skiers to the most inhospitable places in the mountains. In summer and in winter, which meant that the car had to be able to handle both rocky paths and slippery snow slopes.
To this end, Kretzner converted the endearing Bulli into a four-axle terrain monster over the course of four years. The two chain-connected rear axles bring the 34 horsepower of the 1.2-litre boxer engine to the road surface via four 13-inch wheels and tracks - if equipped.
The Raupen-Fux steers with two front axles, equipped with a total of eight 14-inch wheels with rough terrain tires. Thanks to the turning circle of only 10 meters, the extreme T1 bus can be maneuvered conveniently between trees and boulders.
In addition to the tracks, a limited-slip differential also contributes to traction on slippery surfaces. The Caterpillar Fox is not fast: at 35 km/h the forward urge stops. Anyway, in most places where this extreme T1 comes, every other car has long since given up!
