This is for @alissonbecksfan234.
Losing at Old Trafford was never fun. Losing in the way that Liverpool had lost was even worse.
Liverpool were coming into this game in need of a win, United were too. Neither of the two teams had started the season well and needed to kick start their season.
Jurgen Klopp couldn’t believe his eyes, he knew his boys well and he never in his life thought he would see a team that wanted it more.
He did think though that perhaps Allison could’ve done better on the two goals but there was nothing he could do about it now.
The dressing room was quiet as he walked through it, “Don’t worry about this game, we can go again. They are a good team and they outplayed us today. Some of us were not at the top of our game and there is nothing we can do about it now.” His gaze lingered on Alli, the goalkeeper gulped, wondering what that was about.
“Anyway, we put out the wrong lineup. None of this is any of your faults, it’s mine. We chose the wrong lineup to put out, the fault lies with me. None of you should blame yourself for anything that happened in this game, we just need to make sure that we are better for our next game.” Jurgen told the team before walking back out again to do his presser.
Allison went and showered slowly, basking in his self pity after even more points dropped. He threw his stuff around for a moment before changing , he pulled his legs up onto the bench and hugged them desperately as he looked around the room.
The room was dark but his teammates looked darker, the mood in the away room was sullen and Allison placed his head in his knees, taking the full blame, just like he normally did.
The room was nearly empty when he looked up again, only Virgil left. The central defender was in a similar position on the opposite bench, they were both blaming themselves, just like how they normally would after bad results. Everyone else had left them to go back on the bus, leaving the two defenders to their self pity.
Virgil looked at his watch and stood up suddenly, as if scalded by the bench. “C’mon Alli, we need to get on the bus or it’s gonna leave without us.” The keeper didn’t even react as the Dutchman came closer to him. “Alli are you awake in there?” Virgil asked, sitting down next to the goalkeeper.
The Brazilian still didn’t react, staying where he was sitting in the foetal position on the bench. “Allison, nobody blames you for this game.” Virgil smiled sadly, placing an arm around Allison quietly.
”I do.” The keeper replied, smiling sadly into his knees.
“It’s my fault, I blindsided you. You couldn’t see the ball.”
“I could see it well enough, I should’ve done better. It’s not your fault Virgil, it is mine.” Allison still didn’t move.
“Alli, I am more than willing to discuss with you why you are not to blame but we need to get to the bus or we’re gonna be stuck in this place forever.” Virgil desperately tried to pull the goalkeeper to his feet, Allison stood up slowly, collapsing into the centre-backs side.
Virgil grabbed both of their backpacks and put them on his back before placing his other arm around Allison. They came out into the hallway with Alli hanging on for dear life, they saw Jurgen coming down the hallway and Virgil smiled at him, “Thank god, I thought I was gonna have to come and get him.” The manager said sternly as he gestured down to the goalkeeper under his arm, Allison made a strange noise into Virgil's arm before looking up and running away onto the bus.
“What was that about?” Jurgen asked as both men looked on, puzzled at that reaction from their keeper.
“No idea. He’s pretty messed up about this one, he blames himself for the goals that we conceded but it was all of our fault. I blocked his view of Sancho.”
“It’s none of your fault, I put out the wrong team. All of the blame lies with me, not with any of you.” Jurgen took Allison’s bag without a word as he walked over to him. They walked down the long corridor together, shoulder to shoulder.
“Sure but I should’ve been more aggressive for the first goal. I didn’t do anything to stop him, all I was doing was blocking Alison's view of the striker.” Virgil looked down to the ground and Jurgen put an arm around his shoulder.
“Nobody can do anything about it now, it’s not your fault anyway. All of the blame lies with me and the coaching team, not your shoulders.” He assured him, smiling slowly at the Dutchman.
“Thanks Boss, you’re the best.” Virgil leant into him, smiling despite himself.
They opened the door and the bus was right in front of them, they climbed on quickly. Jurgen scanned all of the seats for his goalkeeper, “Alli’s at the very back. What did you say?” Pep asked as he saw what his friend was doing.
“Nothing, I didn’t say anything. He just ran away.” Jurgen defended himself, running a hand through his hair. “I’m going to talk to him, what was he like when he came on?” He asked the Dutchman as he stood over his seat.
“He looked like he was crying, he just went straight to the back and hid. I was about to go down there myself but you’re better in these situations.” Pep said, looking Jurgen in the eye.
“Thanks, I will see what I can do.” Jurgen said before disappearing to the back of the bus.
Allison was in his full tracksuit with the hood pulled down, he was staring straight ahead as Jurgen came up the aisle towards him but turned to the window when he saw him.
Jurgen sat down in the seat next to him and leant back, “I thought you might need this.” He put Alli’s bag down by the man’s feet, there was silence for a minute as they felt the bus pull away. “What’s wrong Alli? I can’t help you if I don’t know what’s wrong?” Jurgen asked, looking down at Allison beside him. He looked like a small child, curled in on himself in the corner, it hurt the manager to see one of his players like that.
“Why do you care?” Allison mumbled, not moving.
“What on earth do you mean? I care deeply about all of you, you’re all my boys.” Jurgen was incredulous as he turned to look at his goalkeeper.
“No, you’re disappointed with this, disappointed with me. You’re always disappointed with me.” His voice was muffled and he sounded like he might be crying. Jurgen gasped, shocked at the turn of events.
“Why do you think that? Nobody in this team could ever disappoint me, when we lose it is my fault. I always blame myself for the losses. Nobody is ever at fault but me, you are my team and you couldn’t let me down even if you tried. I am far too proud of all of you.” Jurgen said, outraged at the suggestion. He felt Allison’s self-control crumple next to him, he felt him fight against it but also give in to it.
He rolled over and leaned into Jurgen’s side.
“I’m sorry Jurgen, I just feel so scared of disappointing you. I’ve always felt like I disappointed my dad and I don’t want to disappoint you too, you are the closest thing I have now that he’s gone.” Jurgen put an arm around his shoulder.
“You can never disappoint me, you are like a son to me.” Jurgen smiled sadly as Allison peered upwards to look him in the eye.
“Do you mean that?” The Brazilian asked meekly, looking for comfort in his manager’s eyes,
“Of course, you’re all my boys. None of you could do anything bad enough to make me disappointed. Unless you got a red card for punching the opposition’s striker, then I would be but you wouldn’t do that.” Jurgen laughed and Allison laughed too. The bus was quiet and the laughter stood out like a sore thumb but he let it hang there, their keeper needed some light.
“Thanks, Boss, I guess I built it up in my head. I just really hate the idea that I’m disappointing you.” Allison sat up normally, slightly happier now. He pulled back his hood and smiled.
“Trust me, you never have and never will. Unless you punch a striker of course.” Jurgen jokes, removing his arm from around the other man.
“I promise I will not do that.” Allison joked back, placing a hand over his heart.
“Good, now go and sit with Bobby, he looked dying to see you.” He gestured Alli away and the other man went, smiling as he picked up his bag.
“Thanks, Boss, for getting my bag.” He smiled down at Jurgen in his seat as he stood over him.
“Anytime.” He replied before Allison moved and walked down the aisle to where Bobby was sitting.
Everything wasn’t ok, they had just lost to their biggest rivals after a run of bad results. It wasn’t ok but it will be, it will be because Jurgen had his boys and together they would conquer the world, again.

Klopp made several changes from the first game of the season, understandable after the Super Cup heroics in midweek. Adrián in goal was the enforced change, but at the back Matip replaced Gomez who dropped to the bench. In midfield it was no surprise to see both Fabinho and Henderson drop out and Wijnaldum started in the 6. A welcome return to the starting lineup for both Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mané rounded out the side.

Goals
Obviously I can't post links to the highlights anymore, which is a shame. I'm sure you can all find them.
Mané 0-1 https://i.imgur.com/vhJ649b.png As with most goals that are just pure individual brilliance there's not much from an attacking sense to pick apart. From a Southampton point of view this is a poor goal to concede. As you can see Southampton are man marking Wijnaldum, Milner, and Mané. The issue is that we have four players - including the throw in taker Robertson - who will be in that area. https://i.imgur.com/L72P3WM.png This means that we are able to play some fairly simple triangles around them. Also note the position of Valerie - who in general I think is a very poor fullback - has left Mané on his own. https://i.imgur.com/PTldNt5.png It's then easy to pass around and get Mané into some space to take a touch inside and fire it into the far corner. It's a great goal but lackadaisical defending from Southampton.
Firmino 0-2 https://i.imgur.com/lAwOXtV.png More great play from Mané, more slack defending from Southampton. Yes Mané has to cover the best part of 20 yards to close down this ball, but Southampton don't have a single player in the center of the pitch. Against some of the best pressers in the league you have to consider that a possibility. https://i.imgur.com/dtA53Fm.png What you cannot do is allow Mané to win the ball back and slide it through to Firmino to run almost unopposed into the box. https://i.imgur.com/63lUsEd.png Firmino breaks into the box and continues to the far post. That makes Gunn shuffle over and over, expecting a curley into the top or bottom corner. Instead, Firmino delays until he can cut back across goal, leaving the keeper look a bit silly.
Ings 1-2 https://i.imgur.com/6ctFD2B.png I was interested to see whether this was anything other than a bad error by Adrián. Unfortunately, I don't think it is. As the ball is played back to the keeper he really has three options - play it to Matip or Fabinho in the middle, or out wide towards Alexander-Arnold. https://i.imgur.com/unNlqsU.png However, when Adrián controls the ball, Ings has made his run. That means the ball has to Fabinho (and only Fabinho) now, or he has to clear the ball long. He cannot dally on the ball because his options are being closed down fast. https://i.imgur.com/0YyJ4Ms.png And when Adrián goes to make the pass you can see just how close Ings has gotten and how tight the angles are. Ings barely has to move a yard either side to block any pass. You can also see van Dijk in the bottom corner pointing to (presumably) the right wing. https://i.imgur.com/NntIqUc.png From the reverse angle it's even more obvious. Sadly it's just poor goalkeeping from a guy who's clearly not as comfortable with the ball at his feet as Alisson. Fortunately it didn't cost us in this game and hopefully should prove a wake up call for Klopp and the other defenders. Next week I fully expect Arsenal to close down Adrián at every possible moment to force errors like this.
Talking Points
What's Wrong With Our Defence?
I caught a lot of flack in the match thread for calling out our poor defending. I don't believe I was wrong. I think the players are not anywhere near the standard we set last season. Are there reasons for that? Sure, there's plenty of mitigating circumstances (tiredness being a key one). I think it's Klopp though who has to cop for that, and adjust the system to suit the fitness. We're playing an incredibly high line with midfielders who are at times 20 yards away, meaning the defence is getting no protection against third man runs. Against Arsenal that is something that can not happen. Hopefully the week break allows us to recover.
Sadio Mané
He's just brilliant isn't he? In my opinion our best player by a mile. Salah scores goals and Firmino creates goals but Mané does both, always with a smile and a laugh and the sense that he's just messing. None of it seems to matter to him and I absolutely love it.
VAR
We were told last season that Liverpool would be the team penalised most by VAR. I find it interesting that - aside from the bullshit penalty in the Super Cup - we haven't had any VAR interference at all. Just something to keep an eye on.
What's Shaqiri done to Klopp?
I reckon he's turned down one too many hugs. It can't be easy for the Cube - Klopp towers above him.
Liverpool's next fixture is against Arsenal in the Premier League. The match kicks off at 17:30 BST/12:30 ET on the 24th of August.

Lineup Lamentations - GW2
Our Transfers, Captains, and Starting 11s for the week!
WALSH
TRANSFERS:
OUT: Havertz and Jota
IN (for -4 points): Bruno and Anguissa
Welp. Went from saving to hitting...such is life. As the age old adage goes, there's not better time to hit than the present.
Jota.. obviously a huge issue, on his way to livp, whatevs. That gamble didn't pay off not by a long shot. I looked around in the 6.5 and under bracket and while Podence is a guy....and I considered Foden again there...it just didn't feel right. I'm half thinking Trossard won't last for long on my team and that seems like a better spot to get Podence in if I want him so I opened my mind and looked at Kai more closely.
Realistically there are a lot of question marks around him, too many to go into here, as well as with Ziyech and Puli out the team is not at their best. I am taking an aggressive line here and getting rid rather than being patient through their easier fixtures gw3-5 so I won't really know if this was a good move until then.
Bruno is someone I've been having a hard time quitting. I seriously looked at hiding him in my GW1 team and I just want him. This move comes down to just wanting to get him more than anything else. It leaves my 11th man a fucking mess, but hey I got 10 out last week and it was fine. I've got Aubz outgoing after the whu game so I'll likely address this with a hit next week, or with my next two free transfers. I'm jamming in another premium asset so hoping that they prop up the dog shit guys at the other end of the team for the time being. Also with the Jota news into Livp it doessss kinda feel that Brewster might go soon? If that happens then suddenly this hit is just fucking brilliant and I start Brewster for the foreseeable. It's not nothing, altho it could be nothing, but just chattin. Just chattin fpl.
GK:
Ryan (new)
Newcastle looked good against West Ham last weekend so the clean feels a bit more tenuous than I had probably thought before GW1 started off. That said, Brighton are a good solid outfit and I am pretty happy with Ryan. Would never be surprised at a clean in this fixture, so hopefully it comes in.
DEF:
Dier (sou)
Everyone suddenly shitting all over Spurs but whatevs. Mou will probably go set up to park against Ralph and honestly I feel like Spurs are a good bet for a clean home or away against any non top 4 side in the division. It's just how they set up and after Southampton were a little off it against us last weekend maybe they continue to struggle and their press is fucked up with another possible miss in Redderz. Dier feels fine and happy I have him.
Shaw (CRY)
Pretty nervous about owning this thicc boi since it seems like they are actively shopping for a LB but as of this moment he's their starter. He played in that friendly thing against Villa the other day so hopefully he's ready to start. Hopefully we keep Wilf on the other side of the pitch so he doesn't get a card, but whatevs. If Manu don't sign a left back in the window he still feels like a good option. And if they do, and don't sign a CB, then I guess I can always laterally swap to Lindy even tho I hate him. Bottom line I still like the 5m price on Manu cleans as I expect them to get many this season.
Trent (che)
As we all saw, was being overloaded and a bit off the pace last game against Bielsaball. Not much to say about Trent here. Tough fixture, but it's Trent. Clean would be surprising but he's always got the shout for attacking returns. Steady hold.
MID:
Aubameyang (WHU)
Nice goal in the opening game against Fulham and another nice fixture against a team that is in disarray. These two games is why he's in my team and he didn't disappoint GW1 so hopefully that carries on into this one.
Salah (che)
The form man...just needs to remember to shoot on sight with the opponents not having a functional goalkeeper between the sticks and he should do just fine. Kinda feeling like Livp are going to disassemble Franklins team this weekend so feeling more hopeful for Mo points than I did a couple weeks ago when I saw this fixture on the slate.
Trossard (new)
Important game for this boy in my team and for what my thoughts are with him moving forward. I didn't select him thinking he'd be a medium term hold...more of a punty OOP cheap guy who I could throw out for a couple and then reassess who emerges but he might play his way into my side for a while yet. Newcastle far from convincing defensively with that 442 so if Bruce plays something similar I imagine that it could be open with some chances for Brighton in this one. I'm hopeful here and good for the boy to have bagged one in the opening game. Go on tr0ss.
Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (lee)
A man deserving of his full name to be noted here. Honestly got hot for Zambo after watching his cameo at the end of the Arse game after knowing about him from his time in Liga last year coming back from loan. He started and played 60odd midweek so I'm a little little bit nervous if he's ready for 90 but I'm hoping so since I just bought him in. He's classy and I like him. Probably no more than a 2 pointer kind of guy but he might have a little bit of license to get to the edge of the box and be an extra guy if he's playing with Reed and/or Lemina or some shit.
If he's still seeing the pitch in my fpl team in a couple of weeks...well I'll have been fucking up...so hopefully this is the first and last start he makes for my team :) Should be a nice first shield on the bench, though, which will probably be useful given that my bench is a laugh riot.
Bruno Fernandes (CRY)
He's in and I can now watch Manu games without persisting feelings of dread. Good fpl pick, good player. Long may the pens floweth.
FWD:
Werner (LIV)
No matter how fucked up Franklin makes the team and sets it up to fail one thing is certain from watching the Brighton game to me...this kid will get points. He's going to be a danger man all season and it would take a lot for me to remove him from my team it seems. Happy to hold him while they wait for the unfit lads to get fit etc. Good guy Timo. Love him.
Calvert-Lewin (WBA)
One of my better picks pre-gw1 happy to have him in for their nice little mini run of fixtures here. West Brom will be a lot better with Ivan but luckily he won't play this weekend. I'd be surprised if Everton don't score 3 or more so when that happens usually DCL will have something to show from it. Looks like a nice pick and a nice hold who I don't have to worry about or spend time thinking about.
BENCH:
Hide your eyes..
Brewster (che), Mitchell (mun), Ferguson(mun)
CAP:
Aubameyang (WHU)
Not really in question here. Give me the good guy against the bad team - not really much to think about here. Go on Aubz.
ALON
TRANSFERS:
OUT: Alli
IN: James Rodríguez
Did this move before we even Friday My Life’d to beat the Alli price drop. Duno. I knew I wanted Hamez and also knew that seeing Alli/Pulisic in my team made me want to blow my brains out for being so fucking bad and dumb.
Guess I’ll be spending FTs righting my mistakes for the first few weeks of the season and then I’ll be behind and wildcarding.... and yeeeaaaaaahhhhh rinse and repeat nightmare season incoming yet again. I suck at FPL.
GK:
McCarthy (TOT)
Meh sure whatever. It’s cleanable but unlikely. Hopefully at least gets a save point here.
DEF:
Alexander-Arnold & Robertson (che)
Good guys gettin’ forward. Maybe Thiago will allow them to get even more forward and less ball progression responsibilities..? Can see a world where Fabinho drops between the CBs and it’s almost a 3142 kinda thing. Duno. They’re great and I don’t really care about fixtures.
Justin (BUR)
Great fixture. Come on Justin do it again lad.
Shaw (CRY)
ManU’re doing everything in their power to get a new LB and fuck Shaw off (about damn time) but hopefully they fuck up all their transfer business as usual and Shaw remains the chosen one. TBD.
For now he’s a good pick and this is a great cleansheet fixture as long as Wilf isn’t running in open space against The Fridge.
MID:
Mane (che)
Mane good.
Rodriguez (WBA)
Hamez pleases me a lot. Happy to be early to the party here and hold him for a long time. AKA until I wildcard.
Pulisic (LIV)
Frank has blatantly lied in pressers before and he will lie again. I mean don’t get me wrong Pulisic is an absolute piece of shit. No question. But just hoping Frank is trying to “mind-game” Klopp (lolol) here and the Yank-cunt™ surprise starts.
FWD:
Martial (CRY)
Tony is love Tony is life.
Calvert-Lewin (WBA)
DCL made us so proud. He should be lookin to bang vs. WBA get in there Dom.
Werner (LIV)
Timo is really good. Nothing surprising at all there man. He’s just really good and I agree with Walsh he’s just gonna get points no doubt.
There’s space behind Liverpool who look to be starting slowly again at the back like last season and that’s the space that Timo will look to exploit.
BENCH:
Walker-Peters (TOT)
Probably coming in for Puli.. It’s not great but it is cleanable and he could also get an assist it’s fine. More likely is they lose 2-0 and he yellow cards Son. Can’t wait!
Reed (lee)
Smallbone (TOT)
CAP:
Martial (CRY)
Sticking with the preseason plan of capping Tony here. Go on Tone please do the things and let’s have none of the things come from Bruno assists, strictly Shaw assists :) :) :). Go on.

Talking Points | Liverpool FC 2 - 2 AFC Bournemouth
Coutinho Shines but Firmino Fades |
The two Brazilians in Liverpool’s front three enjoyed very differing outings against Bournemouth, despite both being directly involved in the Reds first goal. Philippe Coutinho on one hand had another superb outing to follow up his brilliance against Everton. The little magician was in full flow, dazzling with fast footwork, hitting the cross bar with a free kick and finishing off a nice passing move by burying the ball past Artur Boruc into the far corner.
His counterpart Firmino however was dreadful. Shunted out onto the right wing, Firmino started brightly as he tested the Bournemouth goalkeeper with a pot shot but his only other contribution - albeit an important one - was to slip Coutinho through to open the scoring. Firmino has often looked confused and lost this season when forced out wide, with his versatility certainly working against him. With Origi playing well through the middle again however and no Sadio Mane, that is unfortunately not likely to change.
Origi Starts, Origi Scores |
It seems that every time Divock Origi plays more than half an hour of football in a game this season he finds the back of the net. The Belgian was impressive on Saturday against Everton, notching up a goal during his 32 minutes on the field and once again put in a solid performance as he started up top for the Reds, nodding home the second from a Wijnaldum cross. This is the kind of form the striker was in this time last season and if he can remain in that goalscoring mood over the next 7 games, he could prove a real trump card for Jurgen Klopp. His header saw him hit the 10 goal mark for the season - his total across last season - and he’ll be hoping to better it over the next 7 games.
Chopped and Changed Defence |
Realistically it’s no wonder we never keep any fucking clean sheets. Klopp opted to change the defence again, starting Klavan over Matip before having both of them on the field for the last half an hour in a botched effort to shut up shop with a 3-5-2. It just didn’t pay off as Klavan made the error for the Reds second goal and looked off the pace for the entirety of the match. If Joel Matip was indeed fit enough to come on and play half an hour, why did he not start the game? A strange decision from Klopp, especially when it’s known that the German is a huge fan of continuity in his line ups.
Another Game, Another Set Piece Goal Conceded |
This time from a long throw with just 5 minutes to go. Jurgen Klopp said in his post-match presser that the nature of the goal made him “nearly vomit” and I have to concur. The defending was dreadful - as seems to be expected nowadays - and despite Lovren doing well to clear the initial threat, it was the second ball that once again the Reds failed to deal with. It’s been said time and time again but this is an area of our game that has got to improve next season if we’re going to start seriously challenging for trophies, Champions League and the title on a consistent, year-by-year basis. Basic errors cannot be tolerated, especially not with the regularity that Liverpool’s defence seem to make them.
It’s Going to be Tight |
The Reds are lucky that City and United both dropped points over this midweek fixture list but the race for top four has realistically only gotten closer. Arsenal managed a convincing win at home over West Ham while Spurs came back in triumphant fashion to net 3 goals in the last 5 minutes against Swansea. If the Reds are going to give themselves breathing room of any kind whatsoever, points cannot be dropped. They’ve had their drop. They’ve had their let off. Now it’s time to win and win consistently. 7 games remain, meaning there are 21 points up for grabs. I know Klopp won’t accept any less than the full 21 but for me, if we win the 4 home games, take a win and two draws away then that should be enough to get us into the fucking Champions League next season. C’mon you Redmen.
