I’ve been starting out on this painting as a warm up before I dive into my commissions I’m working on. It helps me get in a positive frame of mind. I imagine a world where people aren’t getting suckered into fighting over things so easily. Where small enjoyments and wonder in life take up more of our thoughts… Like the perfect summer breeze washing over us, catching our attention, taking the heat away with it… where a friendly gesture, being helpful or kind to our neighbor is how we travel through life, letting that other stuff go. Horses have so many gifts to give us, they can be incredibly healing. Since I named this painting, Medicine Horse, I gave the horse 'medicine hat markings'. Originally a 16x20 inch painting, I did this as a fundraiser for Healing Reins. They are an amazing facility here in Bend OR. Back then they focused on hippo therapy, so they were (and still are) working with kids that couldn’t walk, cerebral palsy and the like… one day I was out there visiting. A young boy was there for a session. He was just having a tough time, so weak, looked much younger than he was… all that… it was one of his not-so-good days… they got him up on a gentle sweet yellow horse who totally knew how careful it had to be. He came alive. They had to hold him, he started jerking and flailing around… I was holding my breath… the horse started walking and that little boy calmed right down. The rhythm of the horse, it’s quiet powerful energy did its magic… well, makes me get goosebumps and tear up still. That’s why I named this medicine horse. Apparently, in hippo therapy, the movement the horse creates is utilized because it's the same motion as when we walk in our hip joints… before the people in therapy can bare weight, the horses help them condition those muscles and joints to make walking more of a possibility.
