Ah, so Janelle wants to play Storm. Oh. Em. Gee. I so am tired of this headline that comes out every ~6 months that’s some variation of *insert Black actress here* wants to play Storm.
Of course Janelle wants to play Storm. Of course Zazie does, and Kiki, and Yetide, and Alexandra, and whoever else has released that tired statement. You know why? Because there’s this many *holds thumb and index finger half an inch apart* Black female superheroes in comics and this many *puts fingers 75% closer* of those heroes will make it to a screen at some point.
Of course Janelle wants to play Storm! Any and every reasonable Black actress under 45 (and some older!) wants to play Storm, because they know there’s not many more roles that will be offered to them in that arena. That’s a job that will raise your profile, comes with guaranteed additional roles and a paycheck for at least 10 years. And only one (1) lucky Black woman will be afforded that. Not just in the MCU, not just in superhero movies. In Hollywood, period. Think about that. Barring Hollywood moving in a more positive direction quickly, and I’m holding my breath on that, only 1 Black actress will be guaranteed to be a regular blockbuster header (a la Evans, RDJ, Tom Cruise, The Rock) for a decade.
Why you as a young Black actress wouldn’t want that for your career, I have no idea. Hell I want that for me, and I’m definitely not even a woman. But the whole “it’s always been my dream” line? That’s played out and redundant to me; it’s getting a little too paegant-y for my tastes. There’s too much pathos. Too many fans setting themselves up and dividing themselves into groups while completely missing or ignoring the grander point. It’s most every Black girl vaguely interested in comic’s dream. Because that’s how much representation they get. No other superhero gets regular headlines like this. That’s a problem.
So, to the next actress who wants to make that statement, please don’t, I guess? It may actually give you a leg up in what is sure to be a busy competition. Please just show up to the audition and throw down. Read a couple of Claremont comics (because that’s where the meat is, not just in the TV shows or movies). Build your resume as best you can in the meantime.
And I will say this, recently Brandon Davis asked Kiki Layne and Charlize Theron (in promotion for their new action film, The Old Guard) if there’s any other superhero role they’d want to play. Now I’m going to venture that Davis was fishing for Layne to say Storm, because a) she’s said it before and b) again, who else would she say?
Layne did not give any specific answer. What she said was, "I'm just excited for any opportunity to break into [the comic book movie] genre and show that women and Black women in particular can lead those types of films." That to me is an actress who gets it. This is a systemic issue. MORE BLACK WOMEN, in comics, in comic book movies, in action movies, in Hollywood in general. In versatile roles where they are given agency. Just more Black women, period.
That way, it won’t be an all out press-war when it’s time to find a Black female superhero. And Black girls can dream to be more than just Storm (which I mean, that isn’t a bad dream, but you get the point).
BTW, the same really applies to just about every POC group, but I’m focusing on Black women today. Also, I have not even broached the part where Storm is a 5′10″ dark-skinned woman. Different conversation for a different day.
