All of us are where we are today partly because of our own efforts and partly because of the advice, guidance, influence and inspiration provided by others. At Voyage we have the good fortune of connecting with so many of the city’s hidden gems – from entrepreneurs and creatives to athletes, researchers and more. We asked them a simple, but important question: what is the best advice, personal or professional, that you’ve ever received?

The best personal advice I’ve ever been given is, “Never let an earthly circumstance disable you spiritually.” I’m pretty sure this is a quote by Donald Hallstrum but I heard it from my Mom. This quote has so many meanings to me, which I won’t bore you with. But the one thing I’d like to say is that, remember who created you, He is the only one that can judge you. The best professional advice I’ve ever been given is, “Listen, always be a good listener. The person with the most power speaks last.” – It’s human nature to want to be first to justify actions or words, but once they’re done or said.. it’s over. You can’t go back. This advice has taken me further in my career than expected. Not because of the power aspect but because of the listening aspect. It’s made friendships stronger, & my relationship with those around me more meaningful. All because I listen, I hear what people are actually saying, I process it, then I’m able to give meaning to the words that I have to say.

Best advice (professional) – Be open to feedback and don’t take it personally – flavor is all about personal taste. At grocery store demos, customers don’t always know that I’m the owner and maker, so when they give a reaction, good or bad, I take note of what they are saying to me and go back and tweak the recipe sometimes, or I know that I’m on the right path and I’ll stick to my first instincts. My favorite is when someone tries just one flavor and loves it so much that they try every flavor I’m sampling that day.
