All of us are where we are today partly because of our own efforts and partly because of the advice, guidance, influence and inspiration provided by others. At Voyage we have the good fortune of connecting with so many of the city’s hidden gems – from entrepreneurs and creatives to athletes, researchers and more. We asked them a simple, but important question: what is the best advice, personal or professional, that you’ve ever received?

The best personal advice I’ve ever been given is, “Never let an earthly circumstance disable you spiritually.” I’m pretty sure this is a quote by Donald Hallstrum but I heard it from my Mom. This quote has so many meanings to me, which I won’t bore you with. But the one thing I’d like to say is that, remember who created you, He is the only one that can judge you. The best professional advice I’ve ever been given is, “Listen, always be a good listener. The person with the most power speaks last.” – It’s human nature to want to be first to justify actions or words, but once they’re done or said.. it’s over. You can’t go back. This advice has taken me further in my career than expected. Not because of the power aspect but because of the listening aspect. It’s made friendships stronger, & my relationship with those around me more meaningful. All because I listen, I hear what people are actually saying, I process it, then I’m able to give meaning to the words that I have to say.

The best advice I professionally received was to self educate yourself on business practices that can make income for you so then you can have the free time to pursue your passions. Freedom is the number one reason to be an entrepreneur.
This is one of our favorite questions to ask fellow entrepreneurs. The best advice we’ve received is that a winner is just a loser who tried one more time. Perseverance is key when creating a brand, and you will eventually step back and realize that your small wins have piled up to build that brand. In such a competitive world of business, it’s easy to focus on setbacks that you’ve faced. We believe in converting the negative energy that you feel at those times to positivity towards what you can change to better your brand.

Always look at the glass half full!” – Aside from loving a good glass of champs, the glass being half full or empty has everything to do with mindset and less about what’s actually going on. My mom says this to me at the start of my vent sessions about any situation! She’s said it so much that I’ve found myself carrying it with me through life, using it when my friends need a pick me up, at work and more because it always applies! Looking at your glass half full is all about mindset and remaining positive no matter what. It’s so easy to get down about things or sink into negative thoughts, we’ve all been there – but it’s the way we look at things that separates the outcomes. When I’m having a bad day, I literally say out loud “look at the glass half full” – God allowed me to wake up, I have a job, I’m in good health, and the list of all the good flows on until you now have a full cup of gratitude versus a half empty cup of nothing but negative!

Best advice (personal) – Be kind, always. And if you can’t be kind, be silent. You can’t regret a mean word that you never said out loud. Best advice (professional) – Be open to feedback and don’t take it personally – flavor is all about personal taste. At grocery store demos, customers don’t always know that I’m the owner and maker, so when they give a reaction, good or bad, I take note of what they are saying to me and go back and tweak the recipe sometimes, or I know that I’m on the right path and I’ll stick to my first instincts. My favorite is when someone tries just one flavor and loves it so much that they try every flavor I’m sampling that day.

The best advice that I have received is to “just do it.” I was told this advice by several people when contemplating on starting my blog. I had so many ideas and was afraid to take the leap on it due to not knowing if my passion would take me where I needed to be in life. Often we spend so much time thinking about “what if…” and time is constantly passing you by. Time waits for no one or nothing, and I have been motivated to go after the life I wanted when I realized that time was of the essence.

Best Advice I have been giving is sometimes your vision or your purpose isn’t meant for everyone to understand. Sometimes you have to move in silence so that you can get to the place God has for you. I was created by God & designed with a purpose!
The best advice I have been given in regards to everything in life is that failure is a part of achievement. In order to achieve great things, were going to fail sometimes, but that doesn’t mean we quit it means we learn and try again. If you really want something- failed attempts aren’t going to stop you.

Always remember that life is beautiful even if it throws us curveballs every once in a while. So start small and you will eventually surpass what it is you want to achieve. The important thing to remember is to make progress, take the small steps, and carry an attitude of positivity. It may initially not seem significant, but by just taking that first step and weeding out the negativity, anything is possible.
