Why live shows smash the streaming dream!
Wil here ... again, We all love the streaming service concepts out there today. There are many positive aspects that are fantastic. They let us discover new music, encourage us to indulge in a new genre, guide us back to records we listened to as kids. I use Spotify, and as Luna Kiss we are also featured on most streaming services. There is no denying that they have allowed us to reach a new audience, and made music more accessible than ever before. Unfortunately we know of many negative aspects of streaming services. I could blubber on about the poor royalty payments, lack of CD sales, the demise of the album as a concept, or how they have damaged record stores. But we already know this! What I have decided to chin wag (or finger wag) about today is not often mentioned when it comes to streaming debates. I'm talking about how it has had an effect on what I believe is the most exciting part about music, the LIVE scene. Yes that moment when you disconnect your iPhone from the speaker system, turn off spotify and actually go and watch a real human being playing actual music. When I entered my teenage years and tugged on the rope of independence, discovering new artists was a weekly thing. James and I went to Birmingham's Carling Academy (may she RIP) more than twice a month. Although we did not know Ross at the time it turns out he also went to many of the same gigs. He probably even punched me in a circle pit a few times. Anyway I digress. We went to shows like Kerrang tour that fed us many new bands, we would go and see a headline act and then the next day start raving about the support band. That's how we discovered new bands. It was the live experience that encouraged us to buy the record and wear the band t-shirt. Today most people discover new artists by clicking the "related artists" button. I don't discourage that behaviour. However, the "on demand" culture that has been evolving in recent years is promoting a lazy attitude, blocking people's musical libido. Encouraging them to stay on the sofa instead of getting there jacket, keys and wallet and heading down to the local venue, or getting to the gig early to see that support act. On top of that, a new generation of kids are growing up just about to enter that stage in life where they are interested in music and are listening to bands that will help them mould that important "image". That image that will give them a new identity that hasn't been fashioned by the hand of their parents. Where do they all head? Spotify or Apple Music. Most of these kids will go months if not years without actually seeing a band live. Recently we have done some school tours. What has been most exciting is watching the kids experience live music. Experiencing them experience the raw of a guitar amp or punch of a kick drum pushing sound threw a chunky rig for the first time. That's how I discover bands and it's awesome seeing them discover a new band in that way too, the proper way. The best part about being in a band is playing live. I love to perform. Unlike an album or single, which is just a record of a specific moment in time. It's a freeze frame of the feelings, emotions, and the journey of a band at the moment in which they were recording the song/songs. Live music has a heart beat that ends, a pulse that stops when the last chord is strummed. Each gig is different, the pulse will beat differently each time and what's unique and so special about this, what sets it apart from the "streaming dream" is that you will only ever experience that version of it once. The beautiful moments playing live are when the band and the audience become one element. What at the start of the gig was some musicians on stage and some punters on the floor becomes this intimate gathering of humans all sharing an experience together. The audience becomes just as integral and essential for creating that atmosphere as the band. It's really important to encourage people to turn off Spotify grab a jacket and go to a live show. People forget the experiences they can have and rely on the convenience of streaming apps to get there musical fix. Music was created live first! Let's keep Live alive Peace. X
