Underrated dynamic: Starbuck and Helo.

They're buds. They go way back. They're completely platonic on a show with multiple love triangles. Not once is Helo's devotion to Sharon called into question. Not once are his scenes with Kara framed as anything sexual or romantic. They understand each other, they have each other's backs, they share a deep trust that I don't even think she has with Lee. He tries to to talk to her about Anders after their failed hookup and she can't, but she easily opens up to Helo about it at the end, and he gets it. Part of that is because he was there, but mostly he's just known Starbuck for so long that he sees how this has changed her in a way that Lee just hasn't been able to. Helo laid down his life when he gave up his seat on Caprica because he considered his life disposable, and then he found love and suddenly had something to live for, and he understands when Anders does the same thing for her. They're growing together while Lee continues (especially after the Blackbird) struggling to find himself.

Her relationship with Lee is a beautiful chaotic disaster and neither of them ever truly knows where they stand, but Helo is her friend and a rock that she can rely on. They can shoot the shit, they can open up, they can sit in silence and listen to music on a crappy old radio. Their scenes are always a stealth highlight of any episode and I just really really love them.

The Mark of a Traitor - Wolviecat - Battlestar Galactica (2003) [Archive of Our Own]

Day 5 of the Febuwhump - "That's gonna scar". This time for one of my more "obscure" fandoms.

Privacy was almost an unknown term aboard the Galactica. It was always like that, with limited space and even more limited time between shifts, and the end of the world made it both worse and better. Most of them were too tired and hungry to care if the people around them were dressed or not, and that the door to the showers stopped working months ago. Bodies were just bodies, just machines to carry them from task to task, and nudity was part of the process to keep those machines running.

Helo was counting on this apathy.

He didn't remember exactly what happened to him in the brig of the Pegasus. The last clear memory was two marines dragging him away, Tyrol screaming behind him and the sharp gasp as they silenced him with a punch to the stomach, and then…

Then it was a blurred mess of pain.

As he was undressing, the marks on his body made themselves know, the only way he could piece together the previous days. The drawstrings on his sweatpants cinched a little tighter around his waist were days without food. Black and blue footprints littering his back and hips and legs, shaped exactly like the sole of the uniform boots, were the anger of the marines made tangible on his skin. Pain in his shoulders when he pulled his tank tops over his shoulders was from before, from hanging on his arms from the bunk bed, when he could still hope a beating is all that awaits him. Rings of bruises and scrapes around his neck meant he was chained, the same way the cylon prisoner was. He lacked the other bruises she had, on her hips, on the inside of her legs, and he should be grateful for that. Instead, it only made him feel sick, knowing how low the bar for better was.

Lines of pain criss-crossing his back, stinging when the tepid water of the shower washed over them. He hadn't checked them yet, couldn't check through the bandages that covered them only a few hours ago. But he knew, from Kara's pale face when she held his hand in the infirmary. From the curses doctor Cottle growled under his breath, aimed at the crew of the Pegasus and humanity in general. From Athena's shaky This is my fault, when they allowed her to visit him. From the single clear memory he had, of one of his captors kneeling over him, blood running over his fingers from a knife he used to etch something into Helo's back.

From the weight of the eyes on him, from people pretending not to look only to stare again the minute he turned his head.

He was counting on their apathy, but this was little more than just bare skin and tired bodies of others.

Toasterfracker.

An accusation forever on his skin. Worse than accusation. The truth.

He turned back towards the wall, trying not to think about all in this room who'd seen his scars, and instead of pain, or anger at those who hurt one of their own, are glad they can clearly see the traitor among them.

I love how tall Tahmoh Penikett is. I mean, he's not actually super tall, but he's very tall for the BSG cast, and Helo towers over everyone. And I just love him.
