What is the main theme of Season 3?

The characters are fundamentally the same as in Seasons 1 and 2, but we asked Miho Shimogasa to design them with a slightly more adult or "cool" look in mind. Phoenix, Hosshi, and "Devil Fang" became the main characters at the suggestion of director Yukiyo Teramoto and series director Dai Sato. Originally, the original author, Hideyasu Takahashi, had an idea for the Phoenix and the Divine Beast, and we pulled the concepts from a rough draft of that idea. There are still many mysteries about President D, but by creating an organization called "Devil Fang" and having rival thieves belong to it, it became easier to bring out various characters in the anime. There are many fascinating characters in the original story, and we want to include them in the anime as much as possible.

In Season 3, you seem to have included a number of concepts that are original to the anime.

Yes, that's right. The concept of Hosshi eating treasures and laying eggs, where key items of the story come out of, is also an original concept of the anime. On the other hand, Akai's three-choice questions are a concept that existed in the original story, and we decided to make use of it in the anime as well, so Akai always says the three-choice question every time he appears in the story. Mr. Sato raised the bar himself, saying, "I want the questions to rhyme nicely" (laughs). He had a hard time thinking about it.

Speaking of originality, Kaneko transformed into a murderous woman in episode 30. I was surprised because this was an idea that Director Teramoto had mentioned in the August 2015 issue of Otomedia.

It was an idea that Director Teramoto had been working on for a long time. The transformation scene was quite forced, but since it was a gag episode, I thought it would be okay (laughs). The next episode, episode 31, "Shadow and Eyes and Fakes" was also a gag episode, and everyone on the staff wanted to do it. Shadow also made an appearance for the first time in a while, and he too became more of a gag (laugh). We also introduced Fake Silver Heart and fake Roko, who were not in the original work. Fake-Silver is a robot and Fake-Roko is a skunk. In the original, Fake-Queen is the character who farts, but in the anime, we switched that concept to Fake-Roko. The cast is also spectacular, with Kenichi Suzumura as fake Joker, Toshiyuki Toyonaga as fake Spade, and Kaori Nazuka as fake Queen. The casting was done after asking Ayumu Murase, who plays Joker, who he would like to play a fake version of his character.

The opening and ending sequences were just as impressive as the previous and the OP was storyboarded by Takashi Otsuka, who also directed the previous season's OP, to match Arukara's "Miracle Shounen Boy 2" with an emphasis on coolness. Tasuke Inamura, the vocalist of Arukara, came up with the idea for the intro of the song, which includes the call "Hachi!" The ED is innovative, with Joker in red and the Hachi in blue, each running on a road in their image color. The ED is sung by Fuki Commune and fits perfectly with the song "Welcome to the Shining Night!"

What are the upcoming episodes and characters?

There are stories featuring DJ Peacock and Ali Baba. Stay tuned for a rendition of "Ali Baba and the Four Detectives." The story of Rainbow Justice will also involve the Devil Fang. In addition, watch for the original anime episode "The Sky Joker in Peril"! The story and tricks are completely original, and it takes place on Joker's airship, the Sky Joker. You will also see Joker's treasure room and learn about the inside of the ship.

シーズン3のメインテーマは?

根本的にシーズン1・2と変わらないのですが、少し大人向けというか、カッコよさを意識して、しもがさ美穂さんにキャラデザインをしていただきました。フェニックスやホッシー、「悪の牙《デビル・ファング》」が主軸になったのは、寺本幸代監督とシリーズ構成・佐藤大さんの提案です。もともと、原作者のたかはしひでやす先生のほうでフェニックスと神獣に関するアイディアがありまして、そのラフ案から設定を引っ張らせていただきました。プレジデントDに関してはまだ謎が多いのですが、悪の牙《デビル・ファング》という組織を作ってライバル怪盗たちを所属させることで、いろいろなキャラクターをアニメに出しやすくなりました。原作には魅力的なキャラクターがたくさんいるので、できるだけアニメでも登場させたいと思っています。

シーズン3では、アニメオリジナルの設定が多数盛り込まれていますね。

そうなんです。ホッシーがお宝を食べるとタマゴを生んで、中から物語のキーとなるアイテムが出てくるというのも、アニメオリジナルの設定です。逆に赤井が三択問題を出すのは原作にあった設定で、アニメでもそれを活かしてみようと思い、赤井が登場する度に必ず三択問題を言うようになったんです。佐藤さんが、「きれいに韻を踏んだ問題にしたい」とご自分でハードルを上げていて(笑)。考えるのに苦労されているようです。

オリジナルといえば、第30話でカネ子が殺子に変身しました。オトメディア2015年8月号で、寺本監督が語っていたアイディアだったので驚きました。

寺本監督がずっと温めていたアイディアだったんです。変身シーンはかなり強引でしたが、ギャグ回なので大丈夫かなと(笑)。続く第31話「影と瞳と偽物と」もギャグ回で、スタッフみんながやりたがっていたエピソードでした。シャドウも久しぶりに登場して、彼もだいぶギャグ色が強くなってきましたね(笑)。原作にはいない、二セシルバーハートや二セロコも登場させました。ニセシルバーはロボットで、ニセロコはスカンクですね。原作だとニセクイーンがオナラをするキャラクターなのですが、アニメではその設定をニセロコに持っていきました。キャストも豪華で、ニセジョーカーを鈴村健一さん、二セスペードを豊永利行さん、ニセクイーンを名塚佳織さんが担当しています。これはジョーカー役の村瀬歩さんたちに「ご自身の担当キャラの偽物をやってもらうなら誰がいいか」と希望を聞いて、キャスティングした形です。

本編と同じく、オープニングとエンディングの映像もとても印象的でした。OPはアルカラの「怪盗ミラクル少年ボーイ2」にあわせ、前シーズンでもOPを担当していただいた大塚隆史さんに、カッコよさを全面にだして絵コンテ演出をしていただきました。アルカラのボーカルの稲村太佑さんのアイディアで、イントロに「ハチ!」という掛け声が入っているんですが、そのタイミングでハチが画面に登場していますよ。EDは斬新でジョーカーなら赤、ハチは青と、各イメージカラーの道の上を走る構成です。 Fuki Communeさんが歌う「輝く夜へようこそ!」ともピッタリ合っていますよね。

―今後の注目エピソード&キャラは?

DJ・ピーコックがメインのお話や、アリババが登場するエピソードがあります。「アリババの4人の探偵団」の描写は、ぜひご期待ください。レインボー・ジャスティスのお話には、悪の牙《デビル・ファング》も絡んできますよ。そして、アニメオリジナルエピソード「スカイジョーカー危機一髪」にも注目です! ストーリーもトリックも完全オリジナルで、ジョーカーの飛行船「スカイ・ジョーカー」が舞台になってます。ジョーカーのお宝部屋なども出てきて、スカイ・ジョーカーの内部が分かりますよ。

KJS is officially inactive.

With the release of Chapter 77, Kaitou Joker Scans is now defunct. We will not be scanlating any more manga chapters. This blog will remain up as an archive.

While we said before that we would cease activities at the end of volume 15, chapter 77 is actually the start of volume 16. Since it’s a crossover, though, it’d take a lot of research and effort for scanlation newcomers to make proper sense of this one. In the interest of lowering barriers of entry, we’ve gone just this one extra mile. (If it’s any encouragement for future challengers, Phoenix first shows up in volume 17...)

Thank you to the readers for sticking with us for so long and for your enthusiasm! I’m glad that so many of you maintained interest.

Thank you so much to all of our translators, cleaners, typesetters, raw providers, and consultants throughout the years!! Tonight, Joker and his friends have come to a June wedding party. Donning their formal attire, are they aiming for sparkling jewels? Or the bride's heart?!?!

"They will probably steal the bride's heart as well as the treasures (laughs). According to the original author Hideyasu Takahashi, Joker's age is 'about 3 to 5 years older than the readers.' Depending on the age of the bride-to-be, I don't think marriage is just a dream!"

The person who gave this hopeful comment was Dai Sato, in charge of series composition. In Season 2, which is currently airing, Joker and company are on an adventure across the world, including infiltrating prisons and visiting deserts!

"I think the essence of 'Kaitou Joker' is the competition between detectives and inspectors for a single treasure, like in episodes 14 and 16 of Season 2. Not only are the phantom thieves who steal treasure cool, but the rivals who stand in their way are all interesting characters. I think you got to see their personalities in Season 1, so Season 2 will include a time travel story that has a big impact."

Interview with Dai Sato, Series Composer A Guide to the Shining Night

シリーズ構成・佐藤大氏○インタビュー輝く夜への案内状

What did you keep in mind when composing the series?

When I first met director Yukiyo Teramoto, she told me that she wanted to depict Joker and his friends' lives and relationships, not to mention their charm as phantom thieves. With this in mind, we started work on the series structure, but as the TV animation had to be summarised in 26 episodes for seasons 1 and 2, it was not possible to visualise all the episodes from the original story. So, after consulting with Director Teramoto, we introduced Queen and Silver Heart, who appear in the middle of the original story, from the beginning of Season 1. I wanted to depict a story centered on Joker and Hachi, but also a story involving Joker, Spade and Queen all together. So I moved the episodes of the original story forward and made them up as I went along. However, both Teramoto and I love the original story, so we adapted the way and order of the characters' appearances to the original story. We also had an order for Joker and his team to confront a major enemy throughout the 26 episodes of the anime, so we placed Professor C and Shadow Joker as the most suitable characters for the enemy. With Shadow by Professor C's side, I think you get a better sense of the relationship between Joker and Silver Heart as a master-disciple duo.

The original story is a treasure trove of fascinating scenarios, how did you decide which to make into an anime? I had a list of all the stories up to volume 16, and me, director Teramoto and the producers chose the episodes we absolutely wanted to do. The episodes we decided on first were episode 1, "The Miracle Maker Appears", and episode 5, "Journey into the Shining Night". The episodes to be broadcast in the future include episode 19 "Crash! The Idol Stage" and episode 22, "The Burning Inspector and the Wicked Foxes". I wanted to tell these stories in Season 1 after all the main characters had come together and the relationships between the phantom thieves had been established, so I decided to do them in Season 2.

Finally, a message to all the fans! The brilliant tricks of the phantom thieves. The days when the phantom thief, his assistant and his master spend together like a family, and the stories and settings of the original work are important to the production of all the staff. The last few episodes are more epic than ever, so I hope you enjoy them.

シリーズ構成をされる際に、意識されたことは? 初めて寺本幸代監督にお会いした時に、怪盗としての魅力はもちろん、ジョーカーたちの生活の様子や関係性を描きたいという話を伺いました。その思いを念頭にシリーズ構成の作業に入ったのですが、 TVアニメとしてシーズン1・2の26話にまとめなくてはいけないので、原作のエピソードをすべて映像化することはできないんですよね。そこで寺本監督とも相談して、原作では中盤から登場するクイーンやシルバーハートを、シーズン1の初期から登場させました。ジョーカーとハチが中心のお話はもちろん、ジョーカー、スペード、クイーンの3人がそろって巻き起こるお話も描きたかったんです。なので、原作のエピソードを前倒しして、構成していきました。ただ、僕も寺本監督も原作が大好きなので、各キャラクターの登場の仕方と順番は、原作にあわせました。かつ、アニメ26 話を通して、ジョーカーたちが大きな敵に立ち向かっていく形にしたいとのオーダーもあったので、敵として一番ふさわしいキャラクターとして、プロフェッサ・Cとシャドウ・ジョーカーを配置しました。プロフェッサー・Cの傍にシャドウもいることで、ジョーカー&シルバーハートの師弟コンビとの対の関係性を、より感じとっていただけているかなと思います。

原作は魅力的なお話の宝庫ですが、どのようにアアニメ化するエピソードを決めていったのでしょうか? 16巻までのお話をすべてリストにしてもらって、僕と寺本監督とプロデューサー陣で、絶対にやりたいエピソードを選んでいきました。真っ先に決まったのは、第1話の「奇跡の怪盗あらわる」や、第5話の「輝く夜への旅立ち」です。今後放送されるエピソードですと、第19話「激突!! アイドルステージ」や第 22話の「炎の警部と邪悪な狐」ですね。これらのお話はシーズン1でメインキャラクターが全員そろって、怪盗同士の関係性が構築されてから描きたかったので、シーズン2でやる運びとなりました。

It seems that everyone is enjoying Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) while feasting on Hachi's cooking. I wonder what kind of festivities they have in store, Director Yukiyo Teramoto!

"March 13th is Spade's birthday and April 13th is President D's birthday, so this could be a celebration for them as well. The apples may have been a gift from D."

I want to keep watching the peaceful atmosphere of the phantom thieves, but they must be waiting for the next treasure!! Until we see Joker and his friends again, 'smile and au revoir'!

Spring Blossom Interview with Director Yukiyo Teramoto

春満開インタビュー寺本幸代監督

Please tell us about the secret story behind the production of the final episode.

最終話の制作秘話を教えてください。

Finishing and shooting lasted all night for about three days, and it seems that I could see hallucinations by the end of it (laughs). I am relieved that we were able to broadcast the content that we were able to show. The trick that the passcode to unlock the missile is "HEART" was thought up by Naohiro Fukushima, in charge of screenwriting. I think the highlight was the scene where Joker writes his name on the spaceship and tells Phoenix, "Be sure to come back." I wonder when he wrote the name, but in the shot of the spaceship just before this scene, the name is obscured by light to disguise it. So the name was already written at that point.

最後は仕上げと撮影が3日間くらい徹夜して、幻が見えたそうです(笑)。なんとかお見せできる内容で放送することができて、ほっとしました。ミサイルの解除パスコードが「HEART」というトリックは、脚本の福島(直浩)さんが考えてくれました。ジョーカー的には宇宙船に名前を書いて「必ず返しに来い」とフェニックスに言うシーンが、見せどころだったと思います。いつの間に名前を書いたのかと思いますが、そのシーンに入る直前の宇宙船が映るカットでは名前を誤魔化すために光を入れて見えなくしています。なので、あの時点ではすでに書いてあるんですよ。

What was the most memorable moment for you other than the last episode?

最終話以外で、印象的だったことは?

There is a scene in the end of episode 50 where Spider Ace protects President D from a sniper's bullet and shows him the "DF" ring on his left hand, saying, "I have sworn my allegiance to President D." When the first picture came in, the ring on Spider Ace's middle finger was forgotten, so I asked for the picture to be redone and a ring to be added. Then somehow, I ended up with a picture of Spider Ace with the ring on his ring finger (laughs). The staff around me and I laughed hysterically and rushed to have it fixed.

第50話のラストでスナイパー幻魔の銃弾からプレジデントDをかばったスパイダー・Aが、「オレはプレジデントDに忠誠を誓ったんだ」と左手の《DF》の指輪を見せる場面があります。最初に絵が上がって来たときスパイダーAの中指に指輪を描き忘れていたので、リテイクで指輪を追加してもらったんですよ。そうしたらなぜか、スパイダーAの薬指に指輪がはまった絵が上がって来てしまって(笑)。周りのスタッフたちと大爆笑しつつ、慌てて直していただきました。

By the way, In this issue, we are looking into the sleeping habits of Joker and his friends! Who among them do you think is the best at getting up early?

ちなみに今号では、ジョーカーたちの睡眠事情に迫っております! 彼らのなかで、早起きが得意そうな人物は誰だと思いますか?

Hachi has to prepare food, so I think he wakes up early. It seems that Hyakkimaru is also living a proper life. It seems that Spider Ace, who is in a pumped up state after drinking coffee, will wake up early, but I feel that he will be weak in the morning if he hasn't.

ハチはご飯の支度があるので、早起きだと思います。百鬼丸もきっちり生活していそうですよね。コーヒーを飲んでヒャッハー状態のスパイダ Aも早起きそうですが、コーヒーを飲んでいないヘタレ状態だと朝が弱そうな気がします。

Is there a character you would have liked to explore more?

では、もっと掘り下げて描いてみたかったキャラクターはいらっしゃいますか?

I wanted to depict how Spider Ace came to be loyal to D. I liked Spider Ace and Detective Wolfe in the original story, and I really wanted to have Detective Wolfe appear in episode 35, but there was no room for him, so I gave up on the idea. I am glad that I was able to create an interesting combination with D and Spider Ace, but I also wish I could have drawn those two in the story. With Dai Sato, who is in charge of the series composition, I was also thinking about a story about Dr. Neo's astronaut days. When he was young, he had a moment when he saw a spaceship that was disguised as a comet for a moment due to the influence of a solar flare, and from that moment he came to believe that aliens existed. It was a shame that we couldn't depict it. Neo knew Silver when he was young, and I wanted to depict that with Purple as well.

スパイダーAがDに忠誠を誓ったキッカケを描きたかったです。スパイダー・Aは原作でのウルフ刑事とのコンビが好きだったので、本当は第 35話でウルフ刑事も登場させたかったのですが、入る隙間がなくて諦めました。そのおかげでDとスパイダー・Aという面白いコンビが出来たのでよかったという思いもありますが、あのふたりも描きたかったという気持ちもあります。シリーズ構成の佐藤大さんとは、ドクター・ネオの宇宙飛行士時代のお話も考えていました。若かりしネオが太陽フレアの影響で一瞬だけ彗星の変装が解けた宇宙船を見た瞬間があり、そこから宇宙人はいると信じるようになったという設定だったのですが、これも描けなくてもったいなかったです。ネオは若い頃のシルバーとも顔見知りなので、パプルも交えてその辺りを描きたかったですね。

Finally, please tell us what "Kaitou Joker" means to you, Director Teramoto.

最後に、寺本監督にとって『怪盗ジョーカとは、どんな存在なのかを教えてください。

For me, it is a special work that fulfilled my dream of directing an animated TV series. I myself have loved anime since I was a child, and even now as an adult, there are many works that I still remember as my favorites. There are still many stories I would like to tell from the original work, and if there is an opportunity, I would love to do a sequel. The staff also said that they would like to do a sequel, so I feel that "Kaitou Joker" is a work that is truly loved by everyone.

私にとっては、TVアニメの監督をやりたいという夢が叶った特別な作品です。私自身も小さい頃からアニメが好きで、大人になった今も好きだったと思える作品がたくさんありますが、アニメ『怪盗ジョーカー』を観てくれた子どもたちも大きくなり、いつかジョーカーたちを思い出すことがあるのかなと思うと、すごく感慨深いです。まだ原作でもやりたいお話がたくさんありますし、機会があったら続編もぜひやりたいですね。スタッフも「続編がやりたい」と言ってくださっているので、『怪盗ジョーカー』は本当にみんなに愛されている作品だと感じています。

Nice to meet you! To start off, what do you dress in at bedtime?

よろしくお願いします! まずは、夜に寝る時の格好を教えてください

Tsubasa: I don't change my clothes.

翼「僕は着替えないよ。」

Joker, Hachi, Spade: Huh!?

ジョーカー・ハチ・スペード「え!!!」

Joker: That's so dirty. Do you even take baths?

ジョーカー「おまえきったねーな。風呂とかどうしてるんだよ?」

Tsubasa: Why should I take a bath if I don't like water? You can use flames to sterilize, so there's no problem. Even the dirt burns off.

翼「水が嫌いなのに、どうしてお風呂に入らなくちゃいけないのさ。炎を使って殺菌できるから問題ないよ。汚れも燃えつきるしね。」

Are you a good sleeper or a bad sleeper? Also, when you ask someone to wake you up in the morning, do you have a vision of how you want them to wake you up?

寝起きはいい方ですか? それとも悪い方ですか? また、誰かに朝起こしてもらうとき、「こうやって起こしてほしい!」という理想はありますか?

Joker: I can wake up on my own, so I wish people would stop pestering me. Also, when I'm ready to get up and someone tells me to hurry it up, I don't want to get up! I wonder why?

ジョーカー「自分で起きられるんだから、放っておいてほしいよなー。あと、もう起きるって思ってる時に限って「早く起きろ」って言われると、起きたくなくなるんだよ! なんでだろうな?」

Spade: It's not good to so lazy. Because of that, everyone had to wait for breakfast.

スペード「キミが怠惰なのがいけないんだろ。そのせいでみんなが朝食を待たされたんだよ。」

I see... So, since the season is Spring, do you phantom thieves have a particular favorite flower?

そうなんですね・・・・・・では、季節は春ということで、怪盗の皆さんは特に好きな「花」はありますか?

Spade: I like roses. Unlike some people, I think roses are elegant flowers.

スペード「ボクはバラが好きかな。誰かさんと違って品のある花だよね。」

Joker: Why are you looking at me?

ジョーカー「なんでこっち見るんだよ。」

Hachi: Certainly, such gorgeous* flowers suit you, Spade-san.

ハチ「確かにスペードさんはそういう華麗な花が似合うっスね。」

Joker：A 'curry' flower!? (Heart eyes)

ジョーカー「カレーな花?!?(目がハート)」

Hachi: Not 'curry'.

ハチ「カレー違いっス。」

*Gorgeous (華麗), pronounced 'karei', which sounds similar to 'カレー' (karee, curry). The joke lost in translation is that Hachi has said a gorgeous flower, and Joker hears 'curry' because the word sounds similar.

Tsubasa: I like the flower called Hanabi that I saw when I went to Japan. It was a beautiful flower burning in the sky.

翼「僕は、日本に行った時に見た花火という花が気に入っているよ。大空に燃える花できれいだったな。」

Joker：Huh......

ジョーカー「え······。」

Hachi: Phoenix-san, that isn't a flower.

ハチ「フェニックスさん、その花じゃないっス」

Spade: You're unexpectedly romantic....

スペード「意外とロマンチストなんだね・・・・・・。」

Spring is all about flowers, but is there anything that attracts you more than flowers?

春といえば「花」ですが、「花」より心惹かれるものはありますか?

Hachi: Cherry blossom viewing is great, isn't it? Let's all go to hanami together!

ハチ「お花見いいっスよね。みんなでお花見行きましょうよ!」

Joker: Oh, nice! Don't forget the curry!

ジョーカー「お、いいね! カレーも忘れんなよ!」

Hachi: Joker-san, you eat too much curry. I'd like a different menu once in a while.

ハチ「ジョーカーさん、カレー食べすぎっス。たまには違うメニューで行くっス。」

Joker: Ehhh......

ジョーカー「えー――。」

Spade: I'll ask D and the others to join us. Hachi, Dark Eye and I would like to request to have meat and apples on the menu.
