And now for my thoughts and such on “And the Graves of Time.”
It’s kind of weird rewatching the episode with the knowledge that the dude is Rasputin.
Also I love how everyone thought this was the aging episode when we had just titles and how that was totally wrong and graves was literal graves.
“Been polishing my balls all week” Jenkins look like “did you really just say that…”
Confirmed Eve goes bowling and bakes with Ezekiel...love it.
“With all respect to Mr. Dare, screw him” My thoughts exactly Jenkins.
Okay but Nicole just drops her jacket and stuff in the middle of the room then goes snooping...what? That’s very unsneaky of her. Also that rotating camera...it was cool for all of 5 seconds before it started making me dizzy...anyone else have that?
They totally needed to charge them though, but I loved the jumping down on them though. Also, a blood choke is faster at knocking someone out because you cut off blood flow to the brain, but Nicole wasn’t actually doing it, she was copying Eve; the artery is on the side of the neck and she was pressuring the front like you would for cutting off the trachea.
Baird on Nicole’s motorcycle...what an aesthetic.
I both love and hate how Flynn can just throw on a waistcoat and jacket and it work with the bowling shirt uugghh. Also I love how excited Cassandra got about doing Jenkins’s job...including the fact they made tea too.
I’m so in the camp that Eve could be related to Nicole, or maybe the lingering on the locket of the child was just for dramatic effect. Also want an immortal club where (eventually) Flynn, Eve, Nicole, Jenkins, and any other immortals just hang.
Honestly I wish Nicole would stop being so dang combative…I know the Library wronged you 500 years ago, but you gotta give Eve and Flynn a chance, and quit making Flynn be so dang conflicted.
Eve climbing through the crypts is so great, and crashing Nicole’s flight.
I hate that Jenkins jumps to the conclusion that Nicole wants to kill him like she doesn’t hate you that much Jenkins chill out. When Cassandra breaks up their fight, she looks mostly at Jenkins, not at Flynn...start of her questioning Jenkins’s side on the Nicole argument?
THIS WHOLE SEASON IS ABOUT HOW BEING ALONE IS THE PROBLEM AND HOW PEOPLE GET OFF THE RAILS WHEN THEY HAVE NO ONE TO KEEP THEM IN CHECK. Like seriously Flynn tells Darington that his friends, the lits and Eve, saved him. Darington didn’t die to the serpent brotherhood because Flynn convinced him to not be alone, Nicole is all...whatever she is, because she’s been alone, and Jenkins is so adamant about the Library because that’s the only thing he’s had being immortal (if they sent him off to the Annex, Charlene didn’t actually stabilize him like he says, and it’s clear in his actions he’s not okay). Having more than one Librarian keeps them from doing something like locking up Nicole or whatever else the Library is hiding in its dark secrets, aren’t checks and balances great.
I love how the show shoots down the potential for a love triangle by having Eve and Nicole bond over teasing Flynn, it’s so great.
“Do they trust you to do anything on your own?” No Nicole, they communicate first, but due to everyone being so dang dramatic about YOU she had to go off in secret. And also, last time Baird was running off by herself it was communicating with D.O.S.A. and that’s still a sore spot for the lits at least since Flynn was in on that.
Okay but Eve didn’t even buy the whole “She wants to kill me” from Jenkins until Rasputin made a scene. If Jenkins hadn’t been the one with Baird I don’t think she would’ve believed Rasputin honestly. Like Nicole has no magic prowess...how the heck could she teach Rasputin anything? Even Jenkins should know that at least...ugh. Of what I know about Nicole, I think she would’ve tried to stop Rasputin, that would fall under her “I never stopped being a guardian.” And she even says that’s what she tried to do later too.
“You’re a Librarian. You know better than anyone; the mission comes first” okay all these lone wolves in the Library’s past need to get family...I mean Flynn literally counters it with “but they’re family.” Like sure Jenkins and Eve are capable of taking care of themselves, but being on a team means you watch out for each other and help out, not leave people behind. It’s the opposite of what Flynn did in the last episode with Darington.
How come Flynn got to hack a phone into a radiation detector but Ezekiel has only hacked Eve’s laptop??? I need more of Ezekiel technical prowess.
Nicole questioning Flynn not chasing her is sort of fair, he kind of completely ignored thinking about her it seemed...of course everyone arguing about her and the Library, that sounds like something Flynn would do...ignore the problem not right in front of him.
I don’t like how Nicole isn’t letting Flynn’s life be defined as being a Librarian, I had a whole convo here about it so I won’t clog up this. Also includes some Flynn thoughts and theories too. Main thing, Flynn’s not a prisoner of the Library, he’s very happy, and I hate that Nicole made him second guess that.
Flynn is so conflicted and confused and he had to see Nicole die again my poor boy.
Jenkins, carrying off the dying ladies again.
Nothing like nuking Rasputin…
The plant magic was so cool, and Jenkins transferring his immortality was such a good redemption for how he had been acting before. Also Christian did so well acting that scene too.
Nicole needed to find out who she was away from the Library, but Flynn found himself in the Library. Not everyone's the same Nicole quit saying he’s a prisoner he’s not uuggghh.
I really hope Flynn can figure out how he feels about everything away from the people, the boy needs a break from everyone in the Library. Also Flynn would’ve written a letter if he resigned, that’s how he does things, but he didn’t, so therefore he’s going to think, not resign.
These past two eps have been intense in terms of Flynn’s psychological state...I really hope he comes out of this season okay. Feel free to message me about the Librarians!

Emma and D.O. TARDIS Adventures Episode 146
Emma was gonna be busy the rest of the year. She had two weddings to plan. Technically, a wedding and a tethering as Jenkins decided to give Nicole Noone his immortality after a misunderstanding involving Rasputin, which she didn’t blame him, and Charlene had found out that when her clone went into the mirror, they were both disconnected from the Library, so she was mortal too. Emma also in the last couple days had to clone a woman from an episode of a show she didn’t watch a lot of, but watched a few episodes and remembered fondly, Dan VS, she had to settle a thing with the DA’s office so Rafael couldn’t be suspended for issues involving a heroin addict he had to use as a witness when he was working for the Bronx DA, and Logan and Goren had helped her introduce a crackhead jewelry thief and a split personality former ADA who tried to frame Eames for a crime the female counterpart committed to each other on the remains of the Dalek Asylum, which Oswin and Rusty had received as a present for getting them out of Arcadia before the stasis mishap on Gallifrey. Emma was tired, but she had to keep going.
A few days after the TARDIS had left the Dalek Asylum, it took yet another emergency stop in the Night Court universe, but way before anyone was born. Emma came out in the middle of the pouring rain and in her awe, saw a young 14-year-old sitting on a park bench crying. She had a pale complexion and brown hair. She wore a blue dress and black strap shoes. She looked like she was either a middle schooler or a high schooler. The poor girl also looked in pain.
“Hi.” Emma said as she tried to give her a small smile.
“Oh, forgive me.” The young girl said as she stood up. Or at least she tried, but she slipped. Or at least it looked like she did. “Ow.” She whined as she winced in pain.
“Here, let me help.” Emma offered.
“No, don’t touch me. I’ll be good, I’m sorry.” The teen panicked as she dragged her now completely soaked body.
“It’s okay, honey. I’m not going to hurt you. You’re in pain and I only wanna make sure you’re not severely hurt.” Emma said as she started to pick up and take the girl back with her to the TARDIS. Once they were in the TARDIS’s infirmary, Emma set her down and examined her via an X-ray. Signs showed untreated injuries and a lump on her ankle. Plus some freshly broken ribs. Emma took a sample of her blood and ran it through the DNA array. When information came up, she was interrupted by her brother limping and coughing into the TARDIS himself and Emma was appalled as the gangly fellow looked like what Harry had to look like in high school.
“Otto? Brother, are you okay?” The young girl said as she shot up out of the gurney.
“You should’ve seen father, sis.” The young man, presumed to be Harry’s uncle Otto, said as he collapsed onto the floor. A few minutes later, Emma had him on another gurney and his body was being monitored as the Siren Doctor was taking his skin sample.
“He’s stable, but he seems to have suffered a hemorrhage of his lungs. Plus, his hand is broken from having it stomped on multiple times.” The Siren Doctor tisked as she ran it through a reversal machine she had just perfected.
“I need my hands, I’m a mechanic.” Otto said as he started screaming in pain, making Emma wince because he sounded like Harry if he was in pain. The Siren Doctor tried to make it easier on the kid though, by giving him anesthesia through her siren song, as usual. It actually even affected the young girl who fell asleep instantly.
“Please don’t take me back to my parents.” The girl whimpered a few hours later when she woke up. “My mother’s cold and calculating. She tripped me this morning and that’s how I broke my ankle. My father’s no better.” She said as she opened up about her father and how he always tells her how useless she is and throws blunt objects at her that are either still hot from being used or worse. Otto, as her older brother, has a duty to protect her but he can only do so much.
“I’m almost 18 and I need to start living my life, starting a business. You have to help my sister if I can’t.” Otto looked at his little sister with sorrow in his eyes, knowing the emotional toll this is taking on her.
“The only way we can get her help is to send her to an Asylum.” Emma said bluntly.
“They might not treat her with the best respect.” Otto sighed and pulled his legs up into his lap.
“There’s a really nice boy she might like who will one day give her a son and he’ll look just like you.” Emma explained to Otto, making him feel just a little bit better.
“I don’t wanna lie to my nephew though. There's gotta be something that will help with when he grows up?" Otto asked. It gave Emma a good idea.
"I have something I can make him, just hold on." Emma said as took a TARDIS key laced with Project Indigo tech and put it inside a plastic heart that immediately glowed and attached itself to the inside of a batch of stuffing that Emma sewed inside an oval torso, then she sewed a head to the body, followed by its arms and she gave it button eyes.
"His name is Jamboree. He'll be a little friend and he'll serve as a skeleton key for when he misses you." Emma said as she handed the toy off to Harry's mom as they landed outside the mental home and Otto admitted his sister with a thank you and a goodbye. Emma then had to go say goodbye to her own mother as the TARDIS dematerialized.
In loving memory of my mom.

Straight Outta Tombstone
The weird western has been the red headed step-child of genre fiction. The idea pops up now and then but has never really taken off in popular culture in any big way.
More than likely, the first weird westerns I read were by Robert E. Howard in the Zebra paperback, Pigeons From Hell. The first weird western anthology I ever read was the Avon paperback edition of Razored Saddles, edited by Joe R. Lansdale and Pat LoBrutto. The 1980s horror boom still had the illusion of going on though serial killer fiction was already killing the horror genre.
Razored Saddles was a mixed bag, as most original fiction anthologies tend to be. I bought it off the shelf brand new in late 1990 during my Texas sojourn. I still remember Robert McCammon’s “Black Boots” best of all. To me, “Black Boots” was what a weird western should be. The story has never been reprinted. There was a time when Robert McCammon was poised to be the next Stephen King before he disappeared for a while.
Straight Outta Tombstone is the latest entry to the list of weird western anthologies. The trade paperback version came out last summer. I hate trade paperbacks and patiently waited for the mass market paperback, which just came out a little over a week ago.
This is a Baen paperback, $7.99 in cost, 371 pages. A good cover by Dominic Harman. Editor David Boop is someone new to me. His foreword is short at two pages. He mentions some movies, T.V. shows like The Wild, Wild West, and the Jonah Hex comic books. No mention of any pulp magazine or paperback prose fiction.
The first of 16 stories is from Larry Correia and the origins of the Monster Hunters International with “Bubba Shackleford’s Professional Monster Killers.” Set almost at the turn of the century so Correia can engage in some new guns that were just coming out. This is actually the first story in that series by Correia that I have read.
Jody Lynn Nye’s “Trouble in an Hour Glass” is a steam punk time travel paradox story involving stage coach robbers.
Were-bears and a rampaging Megatherium is the basis for Sam Knight’s “The Buffalo Hunters.” I would have been happy with a story with just a rampaging Megatherium.
Robert Vardeman’s “The Sixth World” has a government scientist and a Navajo healer encountering aliens.
“Easy Money” by Phil Foglio is a joke story of animal skinners providing dinosaur bones to museums back east from real live dinosaurs. Too glib for my taste.
Nicole Givens Kurtz features an African-American woman with some special powers. She has to deal with an enemy possessed by a demon.
Steampunk is front and center with “Chance Corrigan and the Lord of the Underworld” by Michael Stackpole. The story read to me as an homage to The Wild, Wild West. Hard to beat Dr. Miguelito Loveless as a villain.
Aliens traveling back in time to take on John Selman, killer of John Wesley Hardin is the basis for “The Greatest Guns in the Galaxy” by Bryan Thomas Schmidt and Ken Scholes. The aliens inadvertently set off a zombie apocalypse in old El Paso.
I have read Maurice Broaddus before in the Griots anthology. He has probably the most horror oriented story in the anthology in “Dance of Bones.” Bad things follow a cattle drive with a former buffalo soldier turned cook and tracker.
Sarah A. Hoyt is a writer who just has not clicked with me in the past. This continues with “Dry Gulch Dragon.” A shape-shifting dragon teams up with his girl-friend’s brother to rescue girl-friend from elves. The western element is very weak. This could have been set anywhere.
I can remember a paperback collection of Alan Dean Foster’s “Mad Amos” stories. Mad Amos returns in “A Treefold Problem.” This story is set in Wisconsin and the problem of repopossession of some undeveloped property. The story is built around a scatological joke at the end.
David Lee Summers brings together Billy the Kid, vampires, and some steampunk trappings in “Fountains of Blood.”
“High Midnight” by Kevin J. Anderson has a zombie private investigator and a hell raising gunslinger ghost. Nope, nope, nope. I don’t like this facile sort of fantasy going back to Thorne Smith through Unknown magazine. If I want this sort of thing, I will watch episodes of Bewitched on You Tube.
Supernatural vengeance by an Apache girl is “Coyote” by Naomi Brett Roarke. This was a an efficient update of a Weird Tales type story.
More steampunk in Peter J. Wacks’ “The Key.” There is a framing sequence with a gun toting Chinese female who tells the story of a western gunslinger and his katana wielding Japanese partner teaming up with Winston Churchill. They are out to deny a piece of ancient technology from Rasputin with a little help from Tesla. Too much name dropping going on. The story loses coherence like a A. E. van Vogt novel.
I have never read Jim Butcher before. “A Fistful of Warlocks” has Anastasia Luccio, a “warden,” travelling to Dodge City to battle a warlock. Wyatt Earp gets caught up in the action.
So, there you have it, Larry Correia and Jim Butcher are the stars and bookends to this anthology. Both deliver entertainment. I would give this anthology about a 3.5 out of 5 rating.
When I finished the book, it became clear that the weird western very much reflects our times. Razored Saddles has a 1980s horror quality to it. Straight Outta Tombstone is heavy on urban fantasy and steampunk elements.
There are two weird western anthologies that I have not read: Skull Full of Spurs: A Roundup of Weird Westerns (Dark Highway Press, 2000) and Dead Man’s Hand (edited by John Joseph Adams, Titan Books, 2014). Skull Full of Spurs has a bunch of 1990s horror writers. Dead Man’s Hand has writers from this decade who seem to show up often in the Martin-Dozois anthologies.
The best weird western anthology is Great Ghost Stories of the Old West. This was a hardback in 1968 and then a Scholastic Book Services paperback in 1973. All the stories are from western writers including Will Henry/Clay Fisher, T. V. Olsen, S. Omar Barker and others.
The newer original weird western anthologies are weak on the “west” portion of the equation. Often the stories could be set just about anywhere.
There has never been an anthology of legacy weird western stories by Otis Adelbert Kline, Arthur J. Burks, Robert E. Howard, Manly Wade Wellman, Manly Banister etc.
I would like to see a weird western anthology by western writers– James Reasoner, Robert Randisi, Peter Brandvold etc.  Makes me wish western writers including Elmer Kelton, Gordon D. Shirreffs, Lewis Patten, Les Savage Jr., Luke Short, Ernest Haycox had not tried their hand at writing at least one story marrying the fantastic with the western.
The problem has always been almost no market for this sort of thing to appear. It remains a niche category.
