Maybe a ben POV one? where bens off on a movie shoot and misses you and wants to fly you out to him but he’s worried it’s too much of a “romantic gesture” like in movies so he doesn’t want to weird you out but then on the phone you say how much you miss him too so he gathers the nerve to ask you and you’re like duh ofc I’ll come you dork (im envisioning this still kinda early in the qpr maybe right after platonically or smth)
Thank you so much babe!!
This is the second of the blurbs for my Platonically themed event! This one follows directly on from the one I posted yesterday so maybe read it first.
Words: 1,759
Warnings: just two idiots being dummies. Minor references to sex and probably some swearing but that's about it.
Reflecting on the situation, Ben had come to the conclusion that it was the perfect time to be in Greece. The run of beautiful weather they’d had over the course of the last month must have set some sort of record, he thought. Every day was blue skies, white fluffy clouds, and the sort of heat that was comfortable and not overly sticky. It made working a dream, especially when half the film seemed to take place on the beach. The sand was warm under his feet and the water clear and cool. They didn’t have much down time since the studio was pushing for it to be finished ASAP so they could release it at the optimal time, but the few days off they did get, Ben spent either fishing with some of the crew or else exploring the picturesque town they were in. There was just one downside. You weren’t with him.
Whenever the thought crossed his mind, whenever he really started to miss you, he’d remind himself that he loved his job, loved that it took him to exciting and beautiful places. And then he’d send you a quick message to check how everything was back home. He called too, mostly in the evenings after he got back to his hotel room. But the deeper into the project he got the more night shoots there were and the later he got back to his room. What brief conversations you had were good but not quite the same as if you’d been there with him. Of course, he’d try to remind himself that it wasn’t like he’d never been away from you before. But those times had all been before you got together, and the changed nature of the relationship made him feel your absence more. He never said that to you though. Mostly, when you could talk, Ben would ask how you were and talk about the exciting things he saw. He’d tell you about the beaches or the trinket shops and say how much you’d like them but he’d never tell you exactly how badly he wished you were with him. He didn’t want you to take it the wrong way and he didn’t trust himself to explain it properly. Whenever he tried to verbalise it (quietly, to his reflection or the dark hotel room he was staying in) he worried it came out too...well, romantic.
The truth was, he’d always been attached to you, since very early on in your relationship. You just got him. His sense of humour and his personality and the way he thought. It took him no time at all to start referring to you as one of his best friends and it was a title you’d held for years. But then he’d realised the way he liked you wasn’t strictly platonic, and it made him feel weird around you. More uncertain than he was used to. He found it hard to describe the relief he’d felt when you agreed to think about his QPR idea or how, when you’d accepted, it had alleviated the uncertainty and doubts that had been plaguing him. To you it would probably sound sappy and sentimental and tat all what you wanted to hear from him. Of course the QPR was really just an extension of your friendship. More or less the same, just a few new ways to show affection like kissing and getting you off (both things Ben greatly enjoyed), and a few new words that made it specific to the two of you. And maybe a new future too, depending on how things went. But again, while he might think those sorts of thoughts, he wouldn’t know how to begin saying any of them to you. Because he was starting to really want that future with you, and saying so might make it impossible to get there.
So Ben allowed himself to miss you quietly. Occasionally an idea of inviting you to join him would pop into his head. But he always let the thought go as quickly as it came. The weeks ticked by like that. Texting when you could between scenes and less and less frequent calls at night, which left Ben’s head swimming with lots of unsaid things. Progress was made on the movie too, most of the beach scenes wrapped and everyone moving to other parts of the script. Until everything came to a screeching halt. Ben wasn’t entirely sure what the problem was – something to do with scheduling conflicts or maybe special equipment that hadn’t arrived on time. All he was told was that things would be back up and running soon but it might take an extra few weeks to complete the project. He didn’t mind so much, it gave him a bit of extra free time after all, but it also meant he wouldn’t get to see you again for a while.
The possibility of flying you out to Greece to join him had been rattling around his brain since his third week on set. You could spend a couple of weeks, maybe a month, together. He could take you to that restaurant he’d sent you photos of and show you the handmade stationery shop he’d stumbled across that he knew you’d have fun exploring. And then there was the rest of the town, thin streets to get lost in together and beautiful views to look out over. Maybe you’d like to walk along the beach with him and collect seashells or rent a little dingy to take out on the waves. Once or twice he’d come close to actually asking you to join him but he always talked himself out of it, sure it would be crossing a line for you. Missing you was one thing but offering to buy you a plane ticket and whisk you off on a getaway to a gorgeous Greek island was surely too romantic. But the news of the delay made him consider it again.
That night he called you, smiling as soon as he heard your voice. At first the call was like any other. He listened to you talk about what had been going on since he last had a chance to call, getting caught up on your mutual friends and your work and whatever else came to mind. “But what about you?” you finally said, “You must be pretty busy since I haven’t had a call from you in a little while.” “Well I was busy except not so much right now,” “Oh?” “There’s some sort of delay, I don’t the details. But it looks like I’ll be here for another few weeks at least.” “Oh.” Ben was a little surprised by how disappointed you sounded. “I really miss you,” “I miss you too,” his voice got softer as he said it, “a lot.” “I really wish I could see you,” “Well,” he said sheepishly, hoping he wasn’t reading things wrong, “how would you feel about coming out here then? I can get you a plane ticket if you want.” “No shit! You can do that? You won’t like, get in trouble or anything?” Ben laughed, not quite understanding, “What are you talking about?” “I don’t know man, I’m not an actor. I just figured it’d be like a partner free zone. Like they wouldn’t want you getting distracted or whatever.” “You fucking dork,” his laughter threatened to obscure the words but he managed to make himself heard, “That’s not how it is at all. You being here wouldn’t be a problem, as long as I’m on set when they need me. Plus it looks like we’re about to have a whole lot of downtime anyway. So does that mean you wanna come?” “Ummm let me think abo- of course Ben!” “Well if I’d known you’d react like this I would have asked sooner,” The laughter had faded, leaving a grin on his face, though the embarrassment at his hesitancy was creeping up too. “Wish you had’ve. Why didn’t you?” “I just didn’t want you to take it the wrong way,” “And what way would that be?” “A romantic way? I don’t know! It’s just the sort of thing that’d happen in a romantic movie or whatever and I didn’t want to come across like that. It’s Greece man, it’s kind of a romantic place. Maybe not like Paris but it’s up there. Don’t laugh,” he groaned, “I’m just saying, white sands and clear seas and lots of pretty flowers in bloom, it’s definitely got romantic vibes.” “It didn’t even cross my mind that it might be that sort of thing. No offence to Greece, I’m sure it’s lovely.” Ben let himself chuckle at his idiocy, “I guess cause I’ve like, y’know, got feelings for you or whatever I saw the romantic side and assumed you would too. Feel silly for not just asking you but I’m glad we have that sorted now.” “I think it’s sweet, Ben. I love that you were conscious of how it might be perceived and I understand you didn’t want to hurt me. But yeah, dude, please get me that ticket, I miss you a stupid amount.” “Alright, I’m on it. When do you want to leave?”
Two days later and Ben was content, sitting and staring out at the waves on a quiet beach as you rubbed sunscreen into his back. He’d greeted you at the airport, feeling ridiculously excited to see you, squeezing you in a tight hug (which you later suggested had cracked one of your ribs). “Okay, all done, now let me do your front,” you shuffled around Ben on your knees, throwing a leg over his lap as he leaned back on his palms. “You’re such a perv,” Ben chuckled, subtly adjusting his posture to push his chest further towards you, “I bet you only suggested sunscreen so you could feel my boobs.” “Oh you caught me,” you squirted some more of the cream directly onto his chest, beginning to rub it in, “Definitely nothing to do with sun safety.” “No I get it, you don’t need to lie to me. You missed my pecks. It’s totally natural. But let me know when you’re done so I can show you the same courtesy.” "Think we might save that till we get back to the hotel, Benny,”  Ben laughed at your exasperated expression, raising one arm to pull you toward him for a kiss, barely noticing the cool of the cream still on your palm as you cupped his cheek and kissed him back.

lol i gotta ask, why do you hate the romance md mc? i haven’t played the game (i hate love choice) she popped up in ayumu pov and err she seemed a litte eccentric ? lol ppl seem to love her from what ive seen so i would a different perspective on her character.
haha okay so i touched on this a bit in my reviews of takado and hosho but let me try to summarise:
basically, i love mcs i can relate to but also find inspiring? like i like mcs who i can see parts of myself in, enough that i look at them and think “if i try really hard to be a good person, i can be like them”. that’s why even with the masukisu mc, i like her well enough, but i like her the most when she fails and makes mistakes bc perfect characters are so boring.
anyway with otoge, i know a lot of people are like waaa mcs are too emotional and weak and insecure about everything but (and maybe it’s just because i’m Peak Insecure) i love that? i like it when they’re emotionally vulnerable and feel things and get hurt cause it helps me (1) be able to relate based on my own relationship/love/hurt/failure at work experience and (2) feel more invested in their character and relationship and development bc it’s clear through their emotional responses that they’re falling in love (or overcoming a problem in their relationship or at work/school/etc.). and if you’re like me and read with a semi self-insert intention, then it’s easier for me to fall in love with not just the LI/MC as a couple but also the actual thought of being in mutual love with the love interest.
so for me the problem with the rmd mc is that she is all surface sass with no emotional substance. i found it very incongruous that she’s supposed to be all meta and love this one (v generic) otome game character but have no interest in real men, because ALL OF RMD’S CHARACTERS ARE VERY CLEARLY OTOME GAME CHARACTER ARCHETYPES. her dialogue with them often reads as like they put 100 points in “snark” and 0 points in any other personality trait. she’s really full of herself (she’s literally in a university/training hospital and somehow thinks she knows better than these elite specialists just bc she’s read a lot of journals??). she’s eccentric in a way that i don’t find particularly cute bc it comes off more as arrogant than passionate to me (maybe bc the writing style for her dialogue is so clinical?)
with someone like hlitf mc, she is righteous to a fault and often will try to like butt in where she’s not needed and be like “noooo i can’t compromise my MoRaLs” but she also has respect for her instructors and is humble enough to know that she does need to listen to their advice, and we often see her fail when she just does it her way without taking their expertise into consideration. because of this, we get to see her self-doubt from the beginning develop into confidence and applicable skill as a working detective. we also get to see snippets where she has to compromise on those morals and overcome adversity to do her job. so we actually get to see her realise her own flaws and learn and grow from them.
however, with rmd mc, we basically never see her have to face any adversity and thus we don’t get to see her develop. she hardly has any inner weaknesses to develop or overcome because she has no personality substance beneath that sassy and nerdy exterior. that’s why she’s only ever interesting when she has the entire crew of doctors in that room off which to bounce dialogue but is so bland when it comes to actual relationship development. her inner monologue as she’s supposed to be falling in love is so insincere because she is written in a way that is very... unemotional? so she goes from “i don’t care about men i only care about READING” to like “what????? i love him????/”  and like if your own first person perspective character doesn’t know or believe she’s in love, then how am i as a reader supposed to suddenly believe it. that’s why i find rmd quite disappointing overall because the LIs actually have good backstories and it would be rewarding to see them gradually open up and fall in love but unfortunately that story is wasted on someone who in my opinion doesn’t allow us to see the full emotional potential of that development.
for example, there are elements of hosho’s route and rei kamiki’s route (from irresistible mistakes) that i find very comparable, in that hosho and dr mc end up cuddling to sleep a lot and rei and the im mc end up basically sharing a bed to sleep together as well iirc? in both cases, we are confronted with having to deal with growing one-sided feelings in a relationship where there is physical closeness but it’s only platonic. and yet somehow, even tho hosho’s back story is way more traumatic than rei’s, the emotional ride of falling in love, having that conflict and then ending up together is so much more convincing and rewarding in rei’s route because of his mc (i.e. the perspective that we read in the MS).
also tbh i think i just like softness? i think it’s really clear by my posts that my favourite moments are when LIs who are normally more stoic/mean are all soft and gooey for the person they love. but rmd mc has no softness under her prickliness lmao. anyway i said i would summarise but i ended up ranting again so my apologies if you like this mc but i personally think the only time she reads as interesting is if you literally only see like 5 slide screenshot posts on tumblr bc you can enjoy her being sassy without having to suffer through her lack of emotional substance
EDIT: i do wanna disclaim that in some more recent hlitf stories/chapters (although can’t remember which ones gave me this impression off the top of my head), i have seen dialogue that sometimes gives me rmd mc vibes. i’m not sure if it’s the same translator/translation team or this is just a trend that voltage is heading towards, but i do remember getting that feeling a couple times and then getting a bit anxious lmao that one of my favourite genuine mcs might be getting corrupted. i haven’t yet been able to pinpoint what exactly it is, but i think it’s that the tone can sometimes come across as blasé or is expressed in a more meme-y turn of phrase where i feel it should be more genuine/sincere? but either way, the writing in hlitf is amazing and we’ve already been given so much wonderful development so i’m not overly worried
EDIT 2: i also wanna add that i know a lot of people like her nerdiness and sassiness i respect that but let’s not pretend that she’s the first nerdy or sassy voltage mc ever lol. hlitf mc forces ayumu to watch freaking era of samurai code of love and nerds out over old school detective dramas (amongst many other things... mizuki fujisaki.....). im mc is a workaholic and a cat lady who could literally talk for 5 hours about tachibana’s ads. bmp mc is CONSTANTLY sassing all of them, esp prince keith lol. mlfk mc is such a dork. scm mc knows every single Greek myth about the stars. msb mc is a theatre nerd. eitm mc does not ever let miyabi or kyoga get away with their shit. however, they are all still VERY CUTE MCs.
anyway i could keep going on and on but all i’m saying is that in so many voltage games, the mc is CLEARLY the only one with a braincell out of the entire cohort of men and the fact that she is the only person with common sense (while also having her own hobbies and interests) while all these men around her are ridiculous is a great selling point so personally i don’t think voltage needed to overcompensate the way they did and delete her emotional capacity function.

Eurovision reviews: Semi 1
It’s that time of the year again, and I, for one, am especially excited for this year’s ESC. The obvious winner is my personal favorite, we’re starting to escape the ballad hell of 2015-2016, and EPIC SAX GUY IS BACK! I can’t wait to see this mess.
The post is under a readmore, because holy shit i have lots of opinions this year. And I’m even using proper punctuation this year! That’s character development, I guess.
1: Sweden: Robin Bengtsson-I Can't Go On
When this song won melfest back in march, very few people in Sweden seemed to be on board with it. I, however instantly saw it as a great strategic choice for ESC, I never want to be too optimistic but I think top 5 could be a possibility.
I’m also imagining a fucked up alternate universe where we somehow unexpectedly win over Italy, just like we did in 2015, and the italians get so mad they never return to Eurovision. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen, I love seeing Sweden dominating ESC, but let’s at least wait until 2018, then we can start winning again.
7/10
2: Georgia: Tamara Gachechiladze-Keep The Faith
Suddenly the enthusiasm I had for writing reviews just flew out the window. This song is slow and heavy in all the wrong ways, instead of feeling empowered when listening to it, I just feel like my head’s in a bucket full of wet cement. A good singer with a strong voice can never be enough to redeem this mess.
2/10
3: Australia: Isaiah-Don't Come Easy
Suddenly children half a decade younger than me are a completely normal occurence in ESC. That’s fucked up, I guess. This is definitely one of the best ballads this year, written and produced in a way that almost makes it more appropriate for american radio than ESC. While the quality of the song is very high, and Isaiah sings it really impressively, it’s still sounds like a rejected Sam Smith single, and that’s the only thing keeping it from being a winner. It’s good, but not unique enough to win.
6/10
4: Albania: Lindita-World
Can I just copy the review for Georgia? This song has the same problems as the Georgian one, it’s just an attempt at being dramatic, and it’s so boring. I hate this, that’s all I’m going to say.
1/10
5: Belgium: Blanche-City Lights
This frustrates me to no end, because it’s one of the best, most modern songs of the year, but I just know that the live performance will be a major fuckup. I’m not going to blame Blanche for ruining the performance, the fact that she’s a nervous teenager could be used as an advantage, but right now it just seems like someone else is making all the decisions for her.
6/10
6: Montenegro: Slavko Kalezić-Space
I’ve heard nothing but whiny criticism of this song, and I think it’s bullshit. Where else but Eurovision can you see a dothraki drag queen swinging his braid around, pretending to be a helicopter, while singing a ridiculously sexualised disco song? It’s somuch fun, and the song isn’t half as bad as people wanna pretend it is.
6/10
7: Finland: Norma John-Blackbird
Classic nordic depression, might be my favorite ballad this year. Please, please, please, let this go to the final. I’m begging you, Europe.
8/10,
8: Azerbaijan: Dihaj-Skeletons
When I first heard this song, I wasn’t impressed. Then I saw the first rehearsal, and I was blown away by the stage performance, the song really started growing on me. How can they have a guy on stage in a horse mask without making it a joke? Top 5 material.
8/10.
9: Portugal: Salvador Sobral-Amar Pelos Dois
Absolutely unique, it’s completely timeless, and vague in a good way: the song really forces you to listen to every word of it. Might be the only song that could beat Italy, Portugal’s first top 5 placement is guaranteed at this point.
9/10.
10: Greece: Demy-This is Love
There’s nothing wrong with this, really. It’s a decent EDM track, but Greece used to be the most recognisable country in ESC, constantly using a nice amount of greek folk music, and I really miss that. But then again, greek folk music is what made then miss the final for the very first time, so I can see why going mainstream would be a safer bet. Still, just being safe is not very exciting.
5/10
11:Poland: Kasia Moś-Flashlight
It’s not bad or anything, but I can’t force myself to care about this. It’s a halfassed attempt at making a mysterious or seductive song, and it just falls flat for me.
4/10
12: Moldova: Sunstroke Project-Hey Mamma
Epic sax guy is back! Through the years, there’s been some questionable comebacks (Ding Dong, anyone?), but I’m happy to say that this is not one of them. This song is modern, fun, and they’re using epic sax guy perfectly. The stage performance will be fun too.
8/10.
13: Iceland: Svala Paper
My sister and I have a really weird tradition: as soon as the ESC final is over, we both try to guess the winner of the next year’s ESC, solely based on which country we think could be the next to win. We started this tradition in 2012, and since then, I’ve always guessed that Iceland could be the next winner.
Then suddenly, sometime last week, I realised that Iceland hasn’t been in the final since 2014. Feels insane to me, to me Iceland is a country that consistently sends high-quality music, and I’ve always thought they could get a win really soon.
Svala is a really cool singer, and her song is one of my favorites this year, but I’m honestly not sure if it’s enough to get back into the final. I guess we’ll have to hope for a great comeback in 2018.
7/10
14: Czech Republic: Martina Bárta-My Turn
I don’t really feel like talking about this, there’s just nothing to say about it. A decent song that will get dragged down to hell by a weird live performance.
3/10
15: Cyprus: Hovig-Gravity
The rhythm of this song is kinda getting on my nerves. It sounds like it’s been slowed down, it’s impossible to dance to it, and it’s not relaxing to listen to either. I just don’t understand this song for a single second.
3/10
16: Armenia: Artsvik-Fly With Me
I’ve almost always enjoyed Armenia’s ESC songs, and this year is no exception. It’s a pretty intriguing fusion of folk music and artsy pop music, the only issue is that it might seem like a weaker version of LoveWave, although I can’t see anyone else than superfans noticing that.
7/10
17: Slovenia: Omar Naber-On My Way
A complete sleeping pill. The instrumental is definitely attempting to be current, but I think the song would be more palatable if they had just let the song be what it truly is, a dated, but decent disney ballad.
2/10
18: Latvia: Triana Park-Line
I find it really interesting how Latvia went from being stuck in the semis for 10 years to suddenly being outstanding in 2015-2016. In my opinion, this year’s effort is a turn for the worse. The song is way too obnoxious for my liking, but that has more to do with the genre than the song itself.
5/10
