when an obsessed orufrey person plays ace attorney for the first time in a while
#witch hat tag#orufrey#you know those times when the defendant is still in shambles at the end of a case because it was not a clear-cut thing#but you get to present one Special Sentimental piece of evidence that proves not all is lost#qifrey's breakdown would be like... he turns up calm and pleasant like dahlia kristoph gant etc but very quickly:#well first he's hiding his scar so you have to use the bracelet and also you find out about the seal on his hat using that.#eventually he is throwing water that comes out of nowhere like that coffee prosecutor guy. and his cape starts billowing#the more he breaks down his neck thingies start coming undone btw. To represent his descent into guilt and his LIES becoming undone.#course as the player i have already used my magatama and seen his 35894 psychelocks. but theyre those BLACK psychelocks#representing his repressed memories taken by the brimhats. also his glasses shatter out of nowhere when you keep presenting evidence#and tartah's testimony etc. and the player is like UHH this guy is A PUPPET MASTER but coco's heartfelt testimony commands the tone#and of course he's someone who has been twisted and damaged by trauma like adrian andrews. the mastermind is of course the brimhats#only me with my magatama knows that... only i can do it. It has to be me.....#just like how as the reader i can see everything about qifrey and i can hold him dear as much as i judge him#whereas if i were oru things would not be ok unless memories can be restored and mentally ill decisions can be illuminated#WELL ANYWAY !!!!! what i appreciate about ace attorney is its ability to mix silliness with seriousness#i cant usually make jokes about serious heavy heartbreaking stuff in witch hat because it is all very intense emotions for me#but i appreciate ace attorney's mix of sincerity and psychological pain and the inherent silliness to being a character in a situation#so.....Get Iguin on the stand. Now. BAILIFF.. TAKE OFF THE MASK#i would most love to be able to prove qifrey's eyesight is failing. hed be like I have no reason to pursue the brimhats (smiles pleasantly)#and it would be like You're lowering your gaze.. proof that the court lighting is too harsh for you..!#his glasses would crack at that moment btw. I used apollo's bracelet and saw the glyphs on the glass.#I know all about u. and i will save u

[Read] Warmth, Magic and Violence
The past few weeks I have been... Consuming a lot of entertainment from various form of medium. Mostly it's returning back to reading mangas, listening to music I used to listen to, and also... I have... I have discovered Ao3... The modern day Library of Alexandria except it's not burnt yet and hopefully not ever💀
(1) Skip and Loafer
A... A...!! I've saw the trailer for this anime several months ago. But from the premise alone I knew it's just up to my alley. It's not Shoujo per se, though the artstyle is so soft and very Shoujo-like, but it's released in a Seinen magazine. The premise is, a village bumpkin went to school in the city of Tokyo. She met her friends, crushes, experiences, stuff like that. I was about to tune in to the anime each week but being the marathon-kinda type of person, I went straight to read the manga instead. I wish it's localized in my native language so I could buy a physical copy of it😔
I love, love the pairing of Mitsumi and the aware Shima. Mitsumi isn't portrayed like usual Shoujo protagonist (fair, because it's not a Shoujo manga, though there isn't anything wrong if there's a character portrayed like that). In the sense that she's so... How do I say... Katro... She's lame, ambitious but she's also charming!! Even her face is drawn so simple too. Shima is kind of doozy, the class darling, popular, charming, but also distant. He had stuff happened in his youth, doesn't treated with proper care as a kid and stuff about his career as a model actor and that's what happened. Shima is cute. But Mitsumi is super adorable. And what I like is how they Shima can open up although slowly and learn more to experience youth and fun and stuff like that.
The series hasn't been completed yet. But I... It's just a ball of warmth and fluff. Granted there's a bit of angst and I sometimes feel like Mitsumi is very, how do I say, it's not Mary Sue, it's like... She tends to affect others rather easily. And I know, it's not supposed to be angsty and stuff. But sometime I felt like her character only sees the world confined through the lens of the all-sunshine and rainbow and everything is going to be okay. Something that is directed later on, introducing clashing perspective and a more challenging conflict for her to face on.
I don't know what I'm saying. I also love that for the anime, it's by Suda Keina!!!! ANYWAY. I usually forget to tune to monthly manga (heck, weekly manga too), but if I remember I would of course want to know how it goes.
(2) Witch Hat Atelier
Not going to lie, this title has been in my mind ever since I saw the name and the guy Qifrey around (which I personally pronounce Chifrey, although the official pronounciation is Kifrey). Uh... There's something about character with partially covered face. DO NOT PERCEIVE👁️
So. I don't know what I'm going to read about. What I know is, magic. Truthfully I have read the first chapter few years back, because I remembered the premise. But I didn't continue because there's a lot of text. I wasn't a good reader back then (even now honestly) and big chunk of paragraph in a graphic media scares me💀 But. Reading it again, I realized it's a testament of how wonderful and intricate the worldbuilding of this series is. Witch Hat Atelier follows Coco, a human fascinated by the prospect of magic. In her world, magic can be only used by Witches, something they're born with, not attained through learning. Comes an encouter that allows her to gain a peek into the possibility of a mere human learning magic.
I was hesitant to actually read through, granted I'm more of a grounded modern world romance consumer lately and this one tackles magic journeys with the main cast consist of four girls under their mage master <- Qifrey. But the art... It's so pretty😭 I love how Shirahamaさん draws and later on I also love the way she involves a very... How do I say... Some real-life issues through the lens of the magical world of WHA. Limitation of the access for knowledge (being magic) is the core issue of the manga, and as her journey goes Coco can see understand why some faction oppose to this. I don't know what I'm saying again💀
Characters! I love characterization. Curiosity and clumsiness of Coco, being introduced to a grander world and how we also see the manga from her perspective (so the author can bring us and introduce us to the world also, putting tidbits of how magic work, etc). It can be dark sometimes. One guy have his body forcefully transformed into a wolf. Another one is implied to have fused with his cat and now tries to use magic to veil his appearance instead. Implied abuse, that way-ly. Another guy have a boulder over him, permanently paralyzed his lower limbs. Another guy is dead and is being dragged one day before his death, and thus living a cycle of it being unaware. Have your enemy put forbidden magic on you, and poof! Memory cleanse! That gave me... Uh... Body horror just reading about it. It tackles a lot of elements regarding disabilities too. And it being portrayed so raw, how the world most of the times doesn't cater to accomodate them. It's endearing because I can see the author put a lots of thoughts before implementing them.
Well... What I want to say is... The scale is going bigger as we see Coco struggles with principles and morales. Qifrey's past and bigger goals. What else... I liked the lightheared segment better mostly because I'm not an angsty person but I understand plot needs to progress lol. I think the feel of it reminds me of Magi. I read that in the past. I forgot how it goes by now but vibes alone... There's also an anime adaptation soon. Life is well and good.
(3) AN ORIGINAL FIC I FOUND ON AO3. It's titled uHH
UM. I. I don't know if I should write about this because this is embarassing💀 I'll even hide the title somewhere in these paragraphs under because. WELL. Okay. As a preface... I discovered the world of Ao3. I was honestly intimidated by the tags system since people used to basically write everything in that. Not to mention I was side-eyeing so hard at how... Uh... People's fantasy can be when written in world. Like... I'm more of a cute fluff wholesome story enjoyer so... BUT... Putting that aside there's a search system with advanced filtering so poof! I pretend I do not see!
Then the first thing I searched was the Enemies to Lovers trope. DO NOT PERCEIVE💀 There's just!!! I MEAN!!! Sure there's rough path and most of the times there's angst and hatred involved BUT THE PAYOFF?!??! From the clashing dynamics to lukewarm to downright lovebirds?!?!?! Yes. Also I'm not too used to reading fanfiction of an existing story, so I was just looking for the tag Original Work also. Completed. Excluding lots of tags so that the more tame and (what I hope) fluffier and wholesome one remains.
And I do! I read lots of it but mostly one with less than 8k words. Because... Well conclusive one-shot is good! But this one... I have made a mistake. I read this one thinking it's a one-shot but noticed there's 34 chapters💀 I've read the first chapter but I was like... HOOOKED by the premise. It's just. Oh my goodness. This will be good. I knew it. AND IT DID. but. What's insane is that it's 108k words in total... As a comparison. Ari&Dante have like 60k-ish words and Eleanor Oliphant have like 90k-ish words. So I basically read this whole thing in one read in like a day💀 this is ruining my life. I love skull emoji💀
AND MAN. I'm not too fond of the main character being a guy with anger management issues but I just know seeing him more soft as I read is like... It's going to be worth it. And it is. It's. IT'S. I'm melting. I... Underlying all that I... ARSHDGAJHADGSHJRGK. Though it's like... Super slow. And I spend a third of the whole book being... When will they get to spend times together. He took so long to realize. I mean, I should've expected it reading the tags but man... The denial. they're cute. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO SAY WITHOUT ME FEELING EMBARASSED. Just. 😭. There's this one scene after a fight because two of them doesn't want to be seen together, he walked to the house across to prove that he's not afraid of being seen together and it's so unneededly sweet😳
I... I SHOULD STOP... I JUST NEEDED TO LET IT OUT. I've read about the title and it seems like this one is published way back at 2006?ish? And it's just been reposted by the author on ao3 later at 2014. I'm...
I don't like what it implies for my wellbeing to me discovering a site where basically I can look through my favorite tropes and see fiction with that tagged in. It's not looking good💀
------------
Edit. So from what I've read the author actually planned to make a sequel for the series (Sets in college) and they actually released bits of side stories and it's so cute😭 but they didn't continue it and it's been around 7 years since the ao3 Page is updated I'm 😔no I'm actually😓
I saw some reviews on goodreads about the series... But why do these reviews seems so snobby like chill up it's a story that could be read freely and the author spend like a lot building the characters and ok opinions and stuff but 3 STARS?!?! Critics see arts in a whole different lens I'll never get them.
Anyways... I peeked a bit about their college life. What do you mean breaking up... WHAT. STOP. Stop with the realism. Most romance stories I liked and remember somehow had these points one way or another like after they got together... LIKE... this. Normal people. Aridante (2nd book which I haven't read because of this particular reason). Heck, skip and loafer. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun. Love isn't real even in the fictional realm😔 O well... I guess it's a common mechanism to bring newer dynamics and conflicts else things would be stagnant. Not to mentions also developing each character and how they cope with it, living outside their pairing, letting them grow and be like... An individual! Like life does. But still😔

Quiffrey Secret Relationship Headcanons
Request: I'm in love with your wha work :,) can u request qifrey headcanons with a reader who also lives in the atelier? perhaps they're not a teacher but they help around and the students love them ( and may or may not also be in a not so secret relationship with him? )

My Navigation is here.
Quiffrey x gn!reader
Tumblr media
Okay so, everyone knows
I think I mentioned before that he is clingy and touchstarved and literally lives to see you flustered so
Why did anyone think it would work?
He might not be latching unto you as much as he'd like (read: drape himself over you 24/7)
But his eyes are usually trained on you. Either completely simping which always makes Agethe roll her eyes at him
Or he looks at you with a fond look in his eyes, a smile tugging at his lips
That one the kids don't usually see, because it happens whenever you're helping them learn
He loves seeing you like this
It tugs at his heart
He's torn between making you become a Professor to share the Atelier (unless you already are) and asking to get children of your own (even though he knows now might not be the best time for it)
All in all, he's a simp so
Really, no way you're hiding it
I think one of the kids would slip up and let him know that everyone knows.
Even Estheath knows, and you haven't even seen him in months.
Oruggio is also done
Like, he's happy
But he's so tired and Quiffrey's antics don't help
Sometimes when they watch you with the kids Quiffrey'll lean into his hand and sigh dreamily
That, without fail, makes Oruggio stand up and lock himself into his room
He's absolutely sick of the simping 😂
It is going to be a fun experience though, mostly because there is no way noone knows.
Moving on to the overall stuff
Agethe respects you so much, it's insane
Sometimes she comes to you for help, because she just cannot deal with Quiffrey at the moment.
It's similar with Riche
The other two just go to whoever is closest
Quiffrey is in the same room?
Bombarded with questions
You're walking past them?
Now you have to stay to explain the entire history of witchcraft in excruciating detail
Oruggio left his room once?
He isn't going back for 2 hours.
You and Oruggio sometimes sit down to watch Quiffrey teach the kids something new, giggling to yourselves or making fun of him
Other times you go on walks together or he bounces ideas for new inventions off of you
He values your opinion a lot
And whenever you tell him of problems you have, he will immediately start thinking about how he could fix them with a new invention
Such a sweetheart
(Also, you don't get that from me, but this man loves hugs and cuddles, though they are a bit more intimate for him meaning only with his few friends or his s.o. and definitely not in public)
You are like the fairy godparent of the Atelier
Being a parental figure for the kids
Assisting in the house
Grounding Quiffrey
And making sure Oruggio doesn't loose his mind
And for that they all shower you in love, each in their own way:
For Agethe and Riche it's Acts of Service. They help you a lot around the house
The other two have Words of Affirmation and Physical Touch (I mean, we're not surprised with Tetia, are we? Please praise her back)
Oruggio's is Quality time. Sitting in silence, nonsensical conversations, serious conversations, philosophy, you name it
And Quiffrey's is essentially everything? But I guess mostly Physical Touch. He tries so bad to be sneaky, but he has his days were he's clinging unto you for the majority of the day
When I say everyone knows, I mean it.

“Let’s change the things we can change”
Reading Witch Hat Atelier ch43...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
..I can definitely hear Iguin chanting in the distance “thaaaat’s my girl, the Brim Hats’ hope”.
So yeah anyway, can I say how thematically incredible it is that Coustas’ misery up until this far crossed the path of Coco (a girl who wasn’t born a Witch) and Tartar (a Witch but born with an eye affliction making him unable to be trained the usual way)? Because obviously, as sort of outcasts in their own community, they’re indeed the most likely to challenge the rigid views of such community.
As we were discussing with @aspoonofsugar, it is very appealing that Shirahama-sensei would finally take the time to address the series’ worldbuilding by, for once, showing that not everyone is born with privilege. Coco and Tartar were the most prominent examples so far, but amongst Witches, while Coustas and by proxy Dagda illustrate an even sadder reality:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t know for other readers of WHA, but personally, this chapter totally changed my feelings about the first time we met Coustas and Dagda, when they were about to drown in that raging river.
Back then, the focus was more on Agathe and Coco, who were about to help non-Witches for the first time and how difficult it was to protect the secret of their powers. So Coustas clearly endangering himself to retrieve some of his and Dagda’s belongings really struck me as obvious and foolish, only set up to introduce the concept that medicine was indeed Forbidden™ to be practiced along with magic.
Now though, I just can’t picture it in the same way at all. Knowing that Coustas and Dagda are travelers who lived with barely a thing and who lost literally everything because of this incident (leaving Coustas unable to walk and to earn his meals while Dagda started undertaking mercenary jobs to wage enough for both of them), I can only see it as tragic and saddening. T_T
Tumblr media
That being said, it also depicts an even more striking (and grim) picture, considering all the examples we’ve seen so far of young witches who were dumped upon adults’ consideration that “they were not good enough” to honor the same craft.
Thinking about Agathe here (dumped by her own family), or even Riché (dumped by her first master) and of course Eunie (considered not confident enough and who ended up cursed by the Brim Hats). Meanwhile, we have Dagda the father figure of Coustas, a non-Witch kid, who’d rather endanger himself doing risky work in order to pay for Coustas’ long rehabilitation rather than giving up on him.
So... isn’t this bitter and unfair? On the one side, the Witches who are indeed privileged compared to people like Dagda and Coustas, but who face a crushing pressure by their peers in order to belong within the magic community, their world all the while being set in stone by rigid rules that no one shall defy. And on the other, people like Coustas who would benefit from breaking said rules, but at the stake of endangering the world’s peace like in previous times.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As such it wouldn’t surprise me if most of the Brim Hats actually chose this path, specifically because they were victims (in many different and subjective ways) of this unfair world.
Not that I think them promoting chaos makes them the right side to choose, but clearly if they seem to believe in Coco, it may be because she’s the one who’s eventually best fit to understand all of this, which means there is also a side of truth to learn from their beliefs.
All that to say that Coco steadily grows and learns: she learns from Qifrey, she learns from the Brim Hats, she learns from Tartar and now she’s learning from Coustas’ circumstances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I can’t help but love her decision to (indirectly) support Tartar’s violation in order to help Coustas, when the Knights Moralis (and so the magic community overall) deemed it all Forbidden™.
WHA is really a very good and deep series. I thought, until I read this chapter, that what kept me to this story was Coco’s and, in parallel, Qifrey’s predicaments with the Brim Hats, but it is without a doubt all related to the worldbuilding and the sad reality that the wonderment of magic seemed to hide from us readers so far.
I’ll conclude this post by saying that, while I love Coco and Tartar’s mutual decision this chapter, I think it was definitely foreshadowed as risky and will certainly not be an easy feat to achieve. After all...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
..if this part of the chapter isn’t a metaphor for Coco and Tartar’s current situation, their young knowledge balanced between their magic community and what Coco experienced through the Brim Hats, I don’t know what is. x)
A m a z i n g chapter! Can’t wait for what’s next!
It’s an amazing manga, please give it a try!

Witch Hat Atelier impressions
Boy I didn't even know I missed fantasy as much as I apparently did. I've been consuming a lot of manga/anime set in modernish time and honestly it was so nice to just read a nice pure fantasy for once.
Anyway, Witch Hat is great
To get the obvious out of the way the art is spectacular
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love every single thing about art in Witch Hat, I love the detailed witch rooms that feel as lived in as they feel magical, I love the creative paneling, I love the fantasy species, I love the clothes, I just love everything.
But more than art the story is also amazing. It's one of those stories that is pretty tightly packed so after every chapter you keep saying 'just another chapter more'. But despite being a very fast read it also utilizes its characters in a great way so you never feel like their characterization and growth is suffering because we are chasing the plot, their growth kind of is the plot and if you are a character oriented person like I am, this one does a v good job. I haven't really found a single character I dislike yet (not counting the villains cuz we don't know a lot about them yet), like there are characters who have harsh edges and I've been making 'Qifrey is crazy' jokes all day but each character feels understandable and lovable so it's never boring no matter who the story focuses on.
Also the world building my god the world building. I fuckin love love love when I just get to sit and read about how another world works in its smallest details. This was one of the things I really loved in Beastars and it's really great here too. I love that we get to learn how magic is used in mundane ass ways such as washing clothes. I love how we are allowed to live through it and learn with the girls, I especially love how there's this whole ass on going narrative about disability which I so rarely see explored in any kind of magical setting like it's just so interesting!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just!! Love the detail and the thought put into everything in this story and this universe, it just feels like such a welled love setting. Like this person has thought about everything from chores to disability and weaves it into the story so skillfully it really feels like you are fully submerged into the world.
The conflict of morality over the magic is great, god it's so damn complicated like you get what the witch society was trying to do and that they were trying their best to protect the world from what already happened but also both the reader and the characters notice all these little holes all these little injustices and as different characters move against the current in different ways it's just very fascinating to watch where they'll end up in their effort to reshape their world in a way they wish it was. Like witch society is so fuckin rooted in victim blaming you can barely even save someone without becoming a criminal, they had to send a child out to wander aimlessly because he was a VICTIM of an outlawed practice but he would have been punished anyway because the magic was preformed on him. I love it, I love these kinds of fucked up societies where it's obvious why the strict rules exist as much as it's obvious they need to change.
And that's not even saying anything special about the characters, we gotten so many good stories and so many more hinted at or at the start of their journey. Qifrey is quickly gaining at my favorite mentor position and we don't even know the full deal with him, he's great. And all the kids ;-; my god the kids it's such a joy to watch them slowly learn and develop and build on knowledge they've gained in earlier chapters. It's always great to see an old basic spell make a return and be used in a new way so you really get the feeling that they are building on their fundamentals and not just pulling out random magic when they need it. That's nothing to say about their personal arcs god this story is so good about learning and growing and having fun while doing so.
It's gotten pretty damn late so Idk know comprehensible this is, but this just might make it as one of my favorite stories of all time.
Tl;dr: 10/10 gold star recommend
