The Claus Family (2020)

This was the first ever Netflix Original from Belgium, and the language is Dutch, which means I loved it as I do most foreign films, but it also means that my parents will never watch it because they hate subtitles.

Jules (Mo Bakker) is a very angry kid because last year, his dad tragically passed away on Christmas Eve. So now he’s angry at the world, especially since his mom Suzanne (Bracha van Doesburgh) has moved Jules and his little sister Noor (Amber Metdepenningen) from Holland to Belgium to be close to his dad’s dad Noël (Jan Decleir). Also unhappy about this move is Suzanne’s mom Oma (Renée Soutendijk), whose entire purpose in this film is to irritate and cause problems for Suzanne. Literally she does nothing else. I think she is the true antagonist here.

Jules discovers quickly that Noël is Santa. But Noël is old and has some health problems, so Jules has to help him. Jules insists that he hates Christmas, but he doesn’t want to lose his grandpa. There’s a lot of teen angst in this, and they never actually say how old Jules is, so he might not even be a teen. Anyway… Jules meets the elves, grouchy Holger (Stefaan Degand), competitive but dim Ikka (Josje Huisman), aspiring singing sensation Gunna (Eva van der Gucht), and maternal Assa (Janne Desmet).

There’s also some subplots going on with Suzanne and Noor. Noor is spending a lot of time with the new neighbor girl Ella (Pommelien Thijs), a 15 year old who is honestly the sole voice of reason in this movie. She is super sweet, loves Christmas, and doesn’t mind hanging out with kids all day for a week. Suzanne is working at a cookie factory, but her boss Jantien (Carly Wijs) is the most miserable person on earth. Suzanne isn’t happy about the environment, but Jet (Sien Eggers) takes her under her wing and helps her navigate things a little. Or at least tells Suzanne what rules she’s breaking. More willing to help Suzanne break the rules is Farid (Rashif El Kaoui). There’s a little bit of flirty chemistry here, but nothing happens, which I think is nice. The kids are still struggling and trying to force them to accept something like this isn’t realistic.

This was a very cute movie. I would especially recommend it to anyone who has a special fondness for Christmas cookies. The score did remind me a bit of the score in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (or Philosopher’s Stone), but it wasn’t similar enough that it felt like a rip off. Overall, I’ll give this 4.5 stars.

do you like your name? why?I like that my real name (Flora) is the queen of plants and that my name that everybody knows (Floor) is a normal Dutch name and has another definition in English.

what color hair do you have?Brown/black. Sometimes chestnut.

what kind of car do you drive? color?I drive in the car of my parents which is a red Hyundai Atos.

where do you shop?For clothes mostly H&M, Bershka and sometimes a vintage store. For supplies at my own store (Kruidvat) or Flying Tiger which I love the most!

how would you describe your style?I would call myself a parttime hipster. I combinate old clothes (mostly from my grandma and mother) with fashion at the moment. Most of time I don’t like the trends of now but when the trend is out I like it and wear it. Such as high waisted jeans. I love to wear that!
