Week Two: September 4- 10
September 5th was another first for me, I got to go to court. Tuesday I went to court in Columbia and I was super excited but I was also nervous for the kid. The kid ended up coming back to JJC but they were okay with that because they had good behavior and were closer to getting to go home. When we got back from court I sat in the POD and observed, I observed the kids, the workers, and how everything worked. I also got to see a new admission this week. When the kids get admitted it is most likely court ordered but in this case the kid had gotten caught doing something and they got brought to us until they can go to court. We take kids from our jurisdiction, but we also take kids from other circuits. Some circuits don’t have juvenile facilities and they only have juvenile court once a month so some kids sit waiting for court longer than others. Thursday I got to do rec and see visitation again. I am really in love with my job, I love getting to work with and help these kids figure out how they can better their lives.

Week One: August 29- September 3
The first week was scary and exciting at the same time, I didn’t know what to expect. JJC is a very secure facility and everything is locked. The doors are all run by a computer system that the person in the POD is in control of. If you unlock one wrong door things could go bad very quickly. When you walk up to the building you ring the front doorbell and the POD worker asks why you are there, if you are allowed in you walk into the lobby. Everyone that comes in has to sign into the log book. In the lobby there are some chairs and restrooms like a waiting room and to the left there is the office. The office has a glass wall dividing it from the lobby. Once you have signed in the and stated why you are there the POD worker will open the lobby door which you walk into the hallway, the hallway gives you access to the office door, the Program/ Evaluation wing of JJC and the Detention wing doors. The Detention wing is split into sections, A-wing is for the girls and B-wing is for the boys. The POD is centered in the Detention wing, the POD is the control station but they are also responsible for watching the Detention wing. The POD is a square shaped room that is surrounded in mirrored glass windows so the workers can see out but the kids cannot see in. A and B wing have a classroom which is right up against the POD walls, there is also a dayroom which has a few couches and chairs and all the doors to the kids rooms. Again all of these doors are locked unless the POD worker unlocks them. There is also a door that goes outside from each dayroom to the basketball court. The court has a 15-20 foot tall fence around it.
Tuesday I worked 8 to 4, which is during school hours so I got a tour of the building and introduced myself to co-workers. Tuesday and Thursday were both pretty uneventful because I was just watching training videos (PREA & Introduction to the Criminal Justice System). These videos are required but they are pretty boring. Thursday I worked 12- to 8:30, so I saw some more school hours but I also got to interact with the kids after school during rec and I got to see the parents visitation. During rec we went outside to the basketball court, the kids look forward to rec all day, I’d say it is their favorite part of the day besides phone calls and visitation. The parents visitation is exciting but kind of sad because all the kids want visits but only a few parents actually show up, visitation is 7 to 8 pm. During week one I learned a lot but I really liked it and can’t wait to see what lies ahead.
