The Problem of Lookism Fandom (and Webtoon Fandom)

Yesterday I wrote about what the fandom did to Jiho. Today, I'll focus on the Lookism fandom in general.

It all started when I found an opinion about lookism fandom on Instagram. The point is like this :

“I don't understand why people likes some bad characters like Johan, Olly, Gun, Samuel and others. It must be because of the visuals. They always forgive evil actions by putting forward arguments from the characters' traumatic past. Please don't justify their evil actions!”

I'm sure you've seen that post lol

On twitter, I connect with many friends who fans of Johan Seong from other countries. K-fans or J-Fans are fun with Johan x Zack ship, English-speaking fans are fan with their SIMP-ing to Johan. I don't find Johan's fans justify evil acts. They just giving understanding, “hey, he's poor, had a blind mother and now he is become blind. Can't you understand him?"

Is it wrong to have a statement like that?

Then I asked myself. Does that include justify evil actions? As far as I know, Johan Seong's fanbase doesn't justify Johan as a shoe thief or as a thug. Isn't the bad character very useful for motivating the good character?

A few months ago, I spoke to a Gun fan. She/he really hates Jake Kim and I asked her/him why. The reason is because Jake has a bad relationship with Gun. As we know, Jake has motivation to kill Gun. The Gun fan also blames Jake because Jake broke the Gun rules when Jake was a candidate for Gun's successor. Gun fans have also argued that Gun is not a villain just because Daniel has a deal with Gun.

Well, my friend also told me that there had been a war between Jake Kim's fanbase and Gun on Twitter. Jake’s fans are upset by what Gun and Goo did to the Big Deal and in the same time, Gun/Goo fans don't think that their favorite character are villains

So I think I found the answer all along. Why do some of fans of the bad character always rationalize the bad actions.

The problem is not about liking the bad character or good character.

The thing is the Lookism fans who actually love characters excessively and don't like seeing other people like characters who are opposite to their favorite characters.

That’s the answer!

Lookism has balanced portion of character development in each character. Okay, this is good thing. But this is also has the bad effect. Because of balanced and equally strong character development, it makes the fandom like.. solo stan in KPop fandom. Like you know, fans only love one member and hate other member at same time. They are upset and afraid if other members who interfere with the existence of their bias.

Yeah, it happened in Lookism fandom. Every fanbase of Lookism characters always feels that their fav character is the main character. Each Lookism character has a detailed background description. That’s why the fanbase feel uncomfortable to see other people who like the character who have contradictory relationships with their favorite character.

That’s why Daniel's fans (or Zoeniel/Jayniel shipper) really hates Crystal or Jiho because Crystal and Jiho's treatment is not good to Daniel and worships Zoe or Jay because they are friendly with Daniel.

Eli's fans hates Johan because Eli was defeated by Johan in the third company, hates Olly because Olly ruined Hostel, and some of them also hate Heather because Heather is considered to take advantage of Eli's innocence.

Johan Seong's hates hates Gun because Gun eliminated Johan, hates Vivi because Vivi is the man behind Dog Cult. As Johan fan, I admit that but I’m not like that LOL

Jake's fans hates Gun and Goo because Gun and Goo ruined the Big Deal, hates Eugene for kidnapping Sinu Han.

Even the fans of villains like Gun and Goo hates Jake, Johan and characters who are against Gun and Goo. In some cases, they justify Gun and Goo's evil actions because they don't feel Gun and Goo are criminals.

Listen. It’s VERY CHILDISH.

It's like a 5 year old kid watching a cartoon show and thinking that the story on the show is about good and evil. The character who confront their fav character are considered evil and must be have to deserve all hatred from fandom.

Life is not about black or white. Life is gray.

And it’s just FICTION. Didn’t the fandom believe in character development?

You know what the impact is?

Fans of good characters will be the annoying moral police who always judging and glorifying good morals in terms of FICTION. They seem to just want their favorite character to live well without a definite motivation. They don't care about the fact that the existence of a bad character means a lot to the development of their favorite character.

And fans of bad character will justify the evil action of their fav character. Fans of bad character don't even feel like their favorite characters are evil. Even worse, they will blame the victim. Of course they want fav character to win in the story.

Then if the fanbase of character is faced with the fanbase of characters who are opposite to their favorite characters, they doesn't hesitate to get angry, judging them as stated in the opinion posts I saw on Instagram.

It just becomes an endless vicious circle.

The fanbase of good character are always complaining about why some people like the bad character, that's useless. The problem is, the FANBASE OF EVIL DOES NOT FEEL THE CHARACTERS ARE EVIL. They think their fav character is good character and they ask for justice in the story.

So please remove the childish mainset like this.

“But wait- like you said that too!" Jake said, laughing

*JUNGWON EVIL MODE ACTIVATED*

K get hit

This dumbassery continues lmao

“Let's introduce ourselves individually, Daniel can st-" Jay gets cut off by everyone Fanboying over his English

This day marks the first day of my placement. I am just really happy and grateful that Flair Airlines gave me and my friends namely, Jaynielle and Rose a chance to be part of their family.
