The West End production of TINA will hold open auditions on Saturday 13th January 2018 for the opportunity to portray Anna Mae, the 11 year-old Tina Turner, with the adult cast of the musical. The company are looking for black and mixed race girls between the ages of 9 – 12 years old, under 4’ 10” with good acting skills and a fantastic singing voice.

From humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee, to her transformation into the global Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina Turner didn’t just break the rules, she rewrote them.   From humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee, to her transformation into the global Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina Turner didn’t just break the rules, she rewrote them. This new stage musical, presented in association with Tina Turner herself, reveals the untold story of a woman who dared to defy the bounds of her age, gender and race.

Adrienne Warren will make her West End stage debut as Tina. Her most recent theatre credit was in Shuffle Along at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway, for which she received a Tony nomination. Her other US theatre credits include Bring It On The Musical at St. James Theater, Dreamgirls at the Apollo Theater, which was followed by a National Tour, and The Wiz at Encores City Center. She has toured and recorded with the multi-platinum selling Trans Siberian Orchestra for which she received her first Platinum and Gold records. Her television credits include the Amazon Pilot Point of Honor, Orange is the New Black, Blue Bloods, Royal Pains, People in New Jersey, Irreversible and Black Box. In March this year, she made her Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Pops.

Kobna Holdbrook-Smith was last on stage playing Laertes in Hamlet at the Barbican alongside Benedict Cumberbatch. Andy Coxon and Hair

“We starve, look, at one another short of breath, walking proudly in our winter coats, wearing smells from laboratories, facing a dying nation of moving paper fantasy. Listening for the new told lies, with supreme visions of lonely tunes.”

It’s a cliché to say that history will always repeat itself, but sitting in Waterloo vaults and listening to these lyrics resonate just as strongly as they did in 1967, it becomes much less of a cliché and much more of a reality.

Set in the East Village in the shadow of the Vietnam war, Hair is a musical that defined a generation – known for its unapologetic social commentary and for confronting questions of war, peace, freedom, liberty and love. 50 years on from the Off-Broadway launch, this brilliant production is no different, surpassing all expectations in its ability to capture the essence of the era and the spirit of youth with sincerity and poignancy. As writer Jim Rando calls it, post the “summer of love; the fall of love”.

Many believe Hair is in danger of becoming a period piece, however, the production team skillfully navigate this obstacle ensuring that the show hits its mark. No effort has been spared by designer Maeve Black and her team in the execution of this immersive experience and as you lounge on a cushion, your head swimming in a sea of incense, it’s not hard to dissociate from 2017. From the moment you enter Waterloo Vaults, the audience are plucked from the modern day and hurled into the sounds, smells and sights of the 60s. This immersion is the backbone for this piece maintaining its cultural context and is executed on an impressive scale.

Director Jonathan O’Boyle’s addition of contemporary political references, developed in conjunction with original author James Rando, draws distinct parallels with the modern political climate. These references are mostly present at the start of the piece, which works brilliantly to ensure that there is no temporal confusion. The 60s are alive before you; weed, music and free love, but should you find yourself slipping from the haze and sinking back to the present time, the world you arrive in is not too dissimilar from that of the 60s.

Hair holds a special place in the hearts of many, but especially for those who lived it, and for the kids who grew up listening to it on their parent’s vinyl. As part of the second group, I can honestly say that this production is a gift to our generation. James Rando and Jonathan O’Boyle have stripped back the production and returned it to its base form, resulting in a truly raw and intimate show that balances an exuberant existentialism with a darkened loss of innocence. This is the real Hair – bearing its soul and focusing on what really matters; the characters and the journey.

Musically the production is superb and the offstage band are electric. From the first notes of Aquarius, delivered by the outstanding Shekinah McFarlane, the audience are assured that this much-loved score is in safe hands. The female cast are vocally exceptional and of particular note is Laura Johnson’s ‘Easy to be Hard’ which is chilling in its sincerity and vulnerability.

The male cast are likewise incomparable, particularly leading men Andy Coxton and Robert Metson in the roles of Berger and Claude. As the enthusiastic and passionate Berger, Coxton brings a vibrant exuberance to the stage which is irresistibly infectious. Capturing the heart of the movement with occasional glimpses of frustration at the apparent futility of their situation, his warmth and charisma easily charms the audience making us feel that, to some extent, we intuitively know him already.

  In the role of Claude, Metson delivers a sobering realism and perhaps, a more relatable character for the modern audience. One foot in the free-spirited world of the tribe, the other being drawn into the terrifying reality of conscription, his pursuit of invisibility is heartbreaking and the thought of his presence on the front line is truly sickening.

The tribe are everything you’d hope for. Showcasing unity and free-love, they entice even the most straight-laced of us to give over to an obligation free life. Flirting with the fantastical, particularly during the dream sequences, they carry off the diverse and eclectic choreography with impressive finesse. The now notorious nude scene is handled with grace and dignity by the entire company, fulfilling its role of showcasing humanity in its most vulnerable form, just as it was originally intended.

Hair defined a generation, a generation who helped stop a war and triggered social change the likes of which the world has not seen since. 50 years on (almost to the day) in a world of Trump and the threat of nuclear war, it’s time for this generation to find its voice and make some noise. Big changes start with small steps, and a celebration of “peace, love and happiness” in Waterloo Vaults seems the perfect place to start. “Join the tribe!”

Last night (6 March 2017) in front of a sell-out performance, Carole King surprised the cast and audience when she made her second visit to see the West End production of Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. King was greeted with a standing ovation at the Aldwych Theatre as she took to the stage at the curtain call to congratulate the cast. Following her surprise appearance, she continued on stage by singing her classic hit You’ve Got A Friend in front of a thrilled crowd. King said: “I was so excited to surprise the cast, they genuinely had no idea, nobody knew! CJ (Cassidy Janson who plays King in the musical) literally brought me to tears this evening with her performance of Natural Woman. She was who I was, she felt what I felt. She was me!”

A FURTHER 130,000 TICKETS RELEASED FOR SALE NOW BOOKING TO NOVEMBER 2017

To coincide with the show’s second birthday in London on Wednesday this week (8 March 2017) a further 130,000 tickets will go on sale taking booking at the Aldwych Theatre to 4 November 2017.

Last night (9th February 2016) was Carole King’s birthday and at the Aldwych Theatre the Olivier, Tony and Grammy award-winning Beautiful – The Carole King Musical celebrated its second birthday in the West End.

VIP guests at the celebrations included Ali Bastian, David Bradley, Lady Colin Campbell, Tony Christie, Antony Costa, Fleur East, Stacy Francis, Ainsley Harriott, Tina Hobley, Terry Jones, Pasha Kovalev, Larry Lamb, Jason Manford, Chris Moyles, Heidi Range, Rachel Riley, Sinita, Frank Skinner, Samantha Spiro, Chris Stark, Linzi Stoppard, Imogen Thomas and Jessie Wallace.

The West End production opened in February 2015 when Carole King surprised the opening night audience by joining the cast at the curtain call to sing You’ve Got A Friend. In July 2016 the cast of Beautiful – The Carole King Musical joined Carole King on stage at her Hyde Park concert playing to over 65,000 people. In October 2014 Beautiful – The Carole King Musical received its world premiere on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre where it recently celebrated its third birthday. A US tour began in September 2015 and in September this year the UK tour will begin and the Australian production will open in Sydney.

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical is the untold story of her journey from school girl to superstar; from her relationship with husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin, their close friendship and playful rivalry with fellow song-writing duo Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, to her remarkable rise to stardom. Along the way, she became one of the most successful solo acts in music history, and wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

The West End cast comprises Cassidy Janson in the title role, Lorna Want as song-writer Cynthia Weil, a role for which she won the 2015 Olivier for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical, Ian McIntosh as song-writer Barry Mann, Joseph Prouse as music publisher and producer Donnie Kirshner, Matthew Seadon-Young as King’s husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin and Barbara Drennan as King’s mother Genie Klein.

The production is directed by Marc Bruni with choreography is by Josh Prince, set designs by Derek McLane, costume designs by Alejo Vietti, lighting by Peter Kaczorowski and sound by Brian Ronan. Orchestrations and Music Arrangements are by Steve Sidwell.

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical features the Carole King classics including So Far Away, It Might as Well Rain Until September, Take Good Care of my Baby, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Up on the Roof, Locomotion, One Fine Day, You’ve Got a Friend, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman and I Feel the Earth Move, along with hits like You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling, On Broadway and Uptown from songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

The chance to perform on the West End stage is a distant childhood dream for many of us.

But for Hannah Jay-Allen, Jammy Kasongo, and Rosie Heath, it’s their day to day job… and for one day only, it got to be my job as well.

From auditions to voice rest and how to make it in the tough world of showbusiness, the stars of the award-winning Beautiful: The Carole King musical spoke to Metro.co.uk to reveal how life on the West End is just like life for everyone else.

And then they decided to attempt to teach me a song and dance routine.

I'VE always had dreams of being a musical star, of striding across a West End stage belting out a classic musical number.

Sadly, although I can hold a tune, my dancing often resembles that of someone's drunken auntie at a wedding, even when I'm stone cold sober, meaning my dream of seeing my name in lights in the West End have remained exactly that; a dream.

So you can imagine my excitement when SuperBreak, which organises theatre trips and hotel breaks, gave me the chance to not only watch the new Carole King musical, Beautiful, but to also meet the cast and go up on stage myself.
