George Washington to Ensign Jacob I. Klock, Valley Forge - Head Quarters, [June 13, 1778], in John Laurens's writing
Tumblr media
Sir
Thirty four of the Indians who are in Camp being desirous of returning home, and it being necessary to commit them to the care of a prudent officer who will preserve good order among them I have appointed you for that purpose and you are to conduct them to Fort Schuyler or the neighborhood of Johnstown—pay the strictest attention to restraining them from irregularities, and causing an uneasiness to the Inhabitants on the road—You will draw provision for them upon giving your receipt at the Continental Magazines as Occasion may require.
As you are going to the neighborhood of your own habitation I have no objection to your taking a week or ten days for your private affairs. I am &c
Ensign I. Klock
Head Quarters 13th June 1778

THE BURIAL (2023)
Starring Jamie Foxx, Tommy Lee Jones, Jurnee Smollett, Alan Ruck, Mamoudou Athie, Pamela Reed, Bill Camp, Dorian Missick, Amanda Warren, Jim Klock, Billy Slaughter, Lance E. Nichols, Tywayne Wheatt, Keith Jefferson, B.J. Clinkscales, Doug Spearman, Gralen Bryant Banks, Olivia Brody, Dave Maldonado, Billy Slaughter and Christopher Winchester.
Screenplay by Doug Wright and Maggie Betts.
Directed by Maggie Betts.
Distributed by Amazon Studios. 126 minutes. Rated R.
You never know what kind of story will work on film. For example, you may not expect to really get drawn into a movie that essentially revolves around funeral homes and contract law in the 1990s. Yet, The Burial turns out to be a pretty terrific feel-good Davey vs. Goliath legal drama.
And it has the added benefit of being mostly true.
It is based on the 1995 court case of Jeremiah O’Keefe (Tommy Lee Jones) vs. the Loewen Funeral Group.
O’Keefe is the head of his over-hundred-year-old family business, a group of three funeral O'Keefe Funeral Homes. (He was also a decorated soldier and the former mayor of Biloxi, MS.) Hitting some hard times in business, he made some questionable choices and quickly found the business hemorrhaging money. In desperation, he had his lawyer Mike Allred (Alan Ruck) reach out to the Loewen conglomerate to potentially buy the business.
What they didn’t know was that Loewen was systematically swallowing up many (if not most of) the independent funeral homes. And by the time that O’Keefe realized that he was being ripped off, he had to sue the huge conglomerate to keep his own family business.
O’Keefe is not a perfect man, nor a businessman, and to be honest some… if not many… of his problems were of his own making. However, he is a prideful, principled man who is determined to be able to pass down the business to the next generations. (And he had 13 children and over 70 grandchildren and great-grandchildren!)
He was also not afraid to color outside of the lines. On the suggestion of legal clerk and friend Hal Dockins (Mamoudou Athie), O’Keefe decides to take a chance and hire flashy celebrity lawyer (and reverend!) Willie E. Gary (Jamie Foxx). The guy has fire, has flare. The only problem is that he’s a personal injury lawyer. He’s never handled contract law.
This odd couple gets together to expose Loewen’s corruption, which revolves around race, class, and exploitation.
Recognizing that the other side is going to make this case at least somewhat a referendum on the corporation’s racial and class qualities – and having deep, deep pockets – they hire a dream team of Black attorneys to handle their side.
Thus starts a fascinating legal procedural featuring some fascinating characters. There is some fine acting here, but it is Foxx and Jones’ film, and it rides on their fine work. (This is probably Foxx’ best film work in years.)
None of The Burial is overly surprising, but it is surprisingly satisfying to see the little man take on the huge corporation. Occasionally the film plays things a bit too broadly – I find it hard to believe that Ray Loewen was really as cartoonishly evil as portrayed here by Bill Camp – but way more often than not the film connects.
So, don’t just write off The Burial when you read it is about a legal case between funeral homes. There is so much more to it than that.

Hi! I'm working on a big research project about the Strike of 1899, and I'm wondering whether you could help me just narrow down names/dates for anyone who got arrested during the Strike? I plan to look through old municipal records this weekend and I'm hoping to come with some jumping off points... also I LOVE your blog and it's wonderful to have a resource like this even to jumpstart academic research! (Did I accidentally send this twice?)
Hello! Thank you for your question!
Here is a list of everybody reported as arrested in New York City during the newsboy strike, as well as what I know about them that may help you find them. I have bolded the cases I think are most interesting:

John H. Alleppo - age 13, lived at 58 Mulberry St., arrested July 19

“many strikers” arrested near Brooklyn Eagle offices July 20

A. J. Klock - age 23, lived at 249 East 15th St., arrested July 20, sent to SPCC
Bertha Saffe - age 23, lived at 364 East 8th St., arrested July 20, sent to SPCC
Emil Kahune/H. H. Kuehn - age 15, arrested July 20, taken to West Thirtieth St police station
Edward Herbert - age 21, arrested July 21 by Policeman Burke for taking papers from people who bought them, jumping aboard cars, taken to Jefferson Market Police Court, fined $5
“Mike the Greaser” - arrested July 21 for forcing a revolver down Kid Blink’s throat “in a learned argument on the subject of “scabs”” (only one paper reported on this so I’m not sure if it happened)
Samuel Wolkinsky- age 13, arrested July 21 for forcing scab to eat his papers, fined $5
John Armstrong - age 14, arrested July 21 for forcing scab to eat his papers, fined $5
Frank “Juicy Frank” Glasso/Desso - 17 years old, arrested for fighting July 21, tried July 24, fined $5
Donato Carolucci/Caroluci - age 17, from Jersey City, arrested July 21 for fighting on Park Row, tried July 24, fined $5
Albert Smith - age 15, lives at 56 or 10 Cherry St., arrested July 22 for parading illegally
Cornelius “Grin” Boyle, age 13 or 14, lives at 351 or 531 Water St., arrested July 22 as a “ringleader”, tried July 24, fined $5
Abraham Greenhouse - age 14, lives at 31 Allen St., arrested July 22 for illegal parade, tried July 24, fined $5
Isaac “Ike” Miller - age 13, lives at 163 Ludlow St., arrested July 22 for illegal parade, tried July 24, fined $5
Joseph “Thimblefinger Joe” Mulligan - 17 years old, lived at 93 Summit St., arrested July 22 for fighting, fined $5
James Leahy/Lahey - age 20, lived at 401 East 48th St., arrested July 23 by Charles Zeeck, followed to police station by boys begging for his release
Samuel Eisenberg - arrested July 23 for sitting near distributing wagon and stealing papers from kids who bought the wrong ones, fined $3
Unnamed “violent boy” arrested July 24
Edward Rowland - age 16, lived at 346 Lenox Ave., arrested July 24 for rioting, held at 125th St. station house
William “Coon” Reese - Black, lived at 22 Orchard St., arrested July 24 for conspiracy, charge changed to violating corporation ordinance, let off with a warning
Louis “Kid Blink” Balletti - age 18 (though the papers say 16), lives at 179 Park Row, arrested July 27 for disturbing the peace, fined $5
Jacob Cutler - arrested July 29 for interfering with paper vendor
George Corr - adult newsseller, arrested July 28 on request of Telegram who later drop charges, Corr sues them July 29 for false arrest
Edward Fitzgerald - 433 East 122d St, arrested July 31,charged with blackmail and extortion, held on $1000 bail
Henry “Butts/Puts” Butler - lived at 425 East 115th St., arrested July 31, charged with blackmail and extortion, held on $1000 bail
John/Jack “Bly” Harney - 82 West 105th St, arrested July 31, charged with blackmail and extortion, held on $1000 bail
Four unnamed strikers arrested August 4 for attacking a delivery wagon
Note: all facts here are taken from newspapers, which at the time were notorious for making things up. As such, exact dates, names, addresses, details of arrests, etc. may not be quite right. However, this list is a good place to start from.
If you’re looking through court documents it’s also potentially worth looking at the other times Kid Blink was arrested. A member of our research team was able to locate some info on his 1905 arrest on microfilm at the NYC municipal archives, but anything else you can find on that would be amazing to see.
Louis “Kid Blink” Balletti was arrested on suspicion of murder June 1 1905 (later acquitted), and for dynamite possession on June 6 1912 (held on a $1000 bail).
Please do send me anything you find, especially if you find mug shots for any of my boys, or any info on the cases bolded above. Thanks again for reaching out and I wish you luck in your research!

Looking into Bonobo's new album "Migrations"
New music from Simon Green has always been a reason for celebration. This artist who originated from Hampshire, UK relocated to Los Angeles to release his new album Migration in 2017 on January the 13th. Contrary to superstition, 13 seemed not to be an unlucky number for Green as the Migrations debuted at the number one on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart this February (Billboard, 2017). Bonobo is well known for his downtempo jazzy drums overlooked by sizzling atmospheres. Organic samples, melodic xylophone-like sounds and haunting sultry vocals are his forté. Discovered by the Cold Cut and later signed to his Ninja Tune record label, Simon Green has been present on the electronic down-tempo scene as Bonobo for 20 years, releasing a total of six different albums.
Tumblr media
(Krug, 2017)
The image on the album cover made by the photographer Neil Krug shows desert and a column of fire rising from the bush beneath, above this is a cloud which looks like a mushroom cloud. This artwork and the album's title I think has connotations of the biblical Israelites migration to the desert. In this tale, Moses leads the Israelites until an angel appears from the flames of fire from within a bush (The Holy Bible, 2004). Moreover, the mushroom cloud has a wider connection to an atomic explosion and the violence of war. In light of this impression given by the album cover, the record could have been interpreted to be inspired by recent global issues. However, in the interview given to the Billboard magazine, Simon Green claims Migration to be inspired by the nomadic musician lifestyle, rather than global issues (Billboard, 2017). Keen not to be labelled within awkwardly named music sub-genres like folk-electronica or trip-hop, Simon tells the Billboard magazine over the phone:
"It came out of this transitory period after the last record. I was living in New York, but honestly, I was touring so much that I wasn’t really living anywhere. I didn’t have a home base for about a year, so I was sketching out all of these ideas in quite unusual spaces. That was the foundation for it really living and being in various locations."
(Klock, 2017)
Migration appears to be different from previous releases and seems to me to be on a higher level of sophistication from its predecessors. In this, Bonobo's sixth album, we can hear the whole pallet of selected instruments and samples. This outstanding and melancholic LP contains recordings of a string trio, arranged by talented musician Tylana Renga Enomoto. It also features sublime brass instruments like Trombone, Trumpet or Flugelhorn played by Rayan Jacob. On the new Green record, we can also find flute, clarinet, mellotron and the samples from the songs like "December Angel" by Syrinx. All songs from the new album were written and produced by 40-year-old Simon Green except for two songs; "No Reason"(Migration, 2017), which was co-written by Nick Murphy, and "Migration" (Migration, 2017), co-written by John Hopkins. While listening to the LP we hear atmospheric, warm guitars, smooth Fender Rhodes that are characteristic of Bonobo's music and double bass all played by the imaginative Green.
Bonobo along with such artists as Caribou, Jon Hopkins, and Four Tet, redefine and popularise the electronic music formula. During his twenty year career as Bonobo, Simon Green has established himself as a virtuoso of soundscape storytelling. His new compositions combine the free form of jazz and copy/paste originality of trip hop. The sonic atmospheres build by Simon Green overwhelms the audience, taking the listener on a journey to discover his magical sound world. This new Bonobo album is something of a study of the people he has met and places he's travelled to, with the inspirations coming from the traveller lifestyle that Simon embarked upon following the big success of fifth album The Northern Borders, since then he has taken influences from one part of the globe to another. Evidenced in the symbolism of the track titles like: "Break Apart" (Migration, 2017); "Ontario" (Migration, 2017); "Boston Common" (Migration, 2017) or "Kerala" (Migration, 2017), place names compliment the nature imagery, indicative of being dislocated and in constant movement. Ninja Tune's biography says this album is packed with emotions and represents human existence and how life has its high and lows, quiet and loud moments. (Ninja Tune, 2017).
Track "Kerala" (Migration, 2017) is the first instalment of the new work, the composition from which Simon began working on his new album. The piece features samples taken from the recording "Baby" by US R'n'B singer Brandy; starting with a saturated mandoline-like motif. Drumbeats develop, a highly shuffled two-step rhythm while strings slowly fill the sound spectrum, then stop to reveal mindfully assembled phrases of Brandy's vocal samples that Green is abstracting beyond language, giving them a new meaning. Eventually,  the drumbeat and airy melody come back to create a foundation for the hypnotising mermaid like vocals grabbing the listener attention to the end. Undoubtedly,  "Kerala" (Migration, 2017) is an excellent introduction to the leading motifs of Migration.
 The eponymous track "Migration" (Migration, 2017) is a beautifully hazy, floating song. Composition gradually builds into a spacious, hypnotic looped sample, transforming into echoey atmospheres all embellished by melodic, soothing piano. Finally, jazzy and distant drums play, recorded by accomplished musician Jack Baker, they begin to take shape and find foreground. The high pitched sound effects mimic birds singing and give additional movement to this song. The melodious and soft vocal samples deliver an unusual experience, taking the listener on to the journey to a remote and calm destination. In an interview given to The Independent, Simon explains the process behind recording with experienced piano player Jon Hopkins for Migration's title track;
“So we were hanging out and I was playing him ideas[...] I created all the little loops that it starts with – they’re all randomly generated – and set them at random and had Jon improvise [...] And that was the idea… to have the pianist improvising to this algorithm. We did about three takes from start to finish and kept it as it was.”
(O'Connor, 2017)
While Migration's opening track takes its audience to breezy meadow fields, the song "Bambro Koyo Ganada" (Migration, 2017), featuring the Brooklyn-based musical collective Innov Gnava, gives a less melancholic and more energetic Moroccan flavour. This sixth song from Bonobo's album begins with an atmospheric, melodic and rhythmic intro decorated with percussive samples recorded by Green while travelling around the globe. These little embellishments imitate the sound of a flickering campfire. Then the song strikes with hypnotic and tribal Moroccan chants accompaniment by rhythmic handclaps that will force listeners to dodge their heads. Eventually, the composition builds up to into a crescendo with a dynamic, clubby rhythm. Co-written by the Innov Gnava collective, "Bambro Koyo Ganada" (Migration, 2017) is very similar to the energetic themes from previous album The Northern Borders. In The Billboard interview, Simon Green clarifies that the louder moments from the LP Migration comes from quiet spaces he was in, like an aeroplane or the bus when he still could hear club ringing in his ears from the previous night (Billboard, 2017).
Migration takes listeners for a lush, melancholic ride. The nostalgic character of this LP guides audience to calmful green fields and the memorable soundscapes imitate sounds of nature like distant hum of a mountain stream or bird song on the misty summer morning. This new song collection from British-born Green will not be a disappointment for the old and new fans of this artist. This album will be a perfect accompaniment for gazing through the window during a long journey. Bonobo's latest album cements his place in the world of electronic music and shows Green’s musical genius. The LP is not revolutionary in regards to its use of instrumentation or how songs were structured. However, the album presents musicianship at its most refined level. After listening, it can be noted that he has chosen quality over quantity regarding production, Bonobo's sixth album conveys issues connected with displacement, constant movement of the touring artist and spans a wide-range of emotions. His music has never sounded so accomplished and convincing, Migration is mystical and unpredictable, the best Simon Green record so far.
