ed sees stede as being unapologetically himself (weird and enthusiastic and soft and smart and all his unconventional interests/mannerisms), and stede sees it all as being inescapably himself (no matter how hard he tries)

and i think that some of the wrongfootedness of their communication does stem from that difference in perception!
