13. "Let's hide under the covers."
Everyone knew Saturday night was date night for Steve and Billy. Everyone who mattered anyway.
So why someone was pounding on the door at 6pm, neither one knew. Billy, ever paranoid since literal demons had spawned over a year ago, tried to check through the blinds. It looked like it was the whole party out there, even Mike who Billy knew didn't really care for Steve. What the hell?
The banging only got louder as neither one answered the door, until suddenly Dustin shouted through the door.
"Steve! We know it's your birthday! Let us in, we brought cake!"
Steve paused, clearly caught between letting his herd of kids in and keeping the sanctity of date night between just them.
"We also know it's date night, but c'mon man! Bros before hoes right?"
Steve's indecision was quickly rectified. As much as he loved the Party, calling Billy a hoe in an attempt to tempt him away was Dustin's fatal mistake. Steve and Dustin had argued for weeks when the kid had found out Steve was dating Billy, to the point where Dustin began to actively avoid hanging out with the Party so he would also avoid any possible interactions with Steve as their chaperone.
It had about broken Steve's heart, but he finally convinced Dustin to sit down and talk it out, explained that he and Billy had talked a lot, and Steve had even convinced Billy to see a therapist who was helping him sort through years of trauma. After that, after Billy had gotten up the courage to individually apologize to each member of the Party, they had started to accept Billy into their group. The relationship was still rocky at best, and Dustin had potentially undone months of progress.
Billy knew that Dustin was just being a kid, but he saw the building frustration in Steve's tense shoulders and clenched fists. In an attempt to deescalate, he slid from where he still stood by the window over to Steve seated on the couch and bent over to whisper in his ear.
"Let's go hide under the covers upstairs. They won't hang around forever, and I can think of plenty of-" he paused, licked his lips in a way he knew drove Steve wild. "Activities we could do in that big comfy bed of yours."
All tension forgotten, Steve smiled at Billy and followed him upstairs. The banging at the door ended sooner than even Billy had guessed, and they were left to finish their weekly date night in Billy's favorite way.
Steve curled up around him as Billy read a chapter out of the worn copy of Pride & Prejudice he kept in Steve's nightstand. They were almost at Darcy's first proposal.
