I may or may not have realized something related to In Space with Markiplier.
Engineer!Mark said that the only other person he trusted the most was the Captain.
Tumblr media
Engineer!Mark also built the warp core.
Tumblr media
Now, with this in mind, recall when the Captain first found the warp core.
The warp core itself trusted the Captain to resolve the time-space paradox we got ourselves into.
Tumblr media
If you think about it, this could be Engineer!Mark's statement of trusting the Captain still ringing true despite his distrust to the Captain before engaging the warp core.
Even if he thought that the Captain was the reason why the events of ISWM happened, he still subconciously trusted the Captain enough to resolve everything.
It wasn't just our hopeful persistence that saved the time-space continuum and The Invincible — it was Engineer!Mark's faith in the Captain that helped in resolving everything.
Markiplier may say this is about "the illusion of choice," but this is just as much about deep relationships that lead to a deep level of trust.
Honestly, this is one of the most beautiful things that I have ever realized about this.

*appears and sets down another poly crew + captain request*
just something soff with star gazing and cuddles maybe?
YES TIME FOR MORE SOFF POLY (I'm so sorry it's so short, my brain has been mashed potatoes lately.)
Tumblr media
"I'm telling you there's no way that's Andromeda--"
"I know the shapes of my constellations, asshat!"
"And we're not even at the right angle to be able to see Andromeda, asshat!"
You blindly but gently reached out, barely tapping your hands against both of them. On either side of you, Mark and Celci both suddenly quieted down. You could hear Gunther chuckle as Burt let out a soft sigh.
The five of you were laying on your backs, in this open field. The planet's seasons were still a little funky to get used to, but this was the closest one to a good summer night that you could find, and the sky was clear. You knew, because you always had an eye for such things, that you made a star with how you all were laying. But you kept that tiny little note to yourself, a little thrill of joy at just knowing how you all reflected the heavens above you.
Even if Mark and Celci's gentle bickering kept cropping up.
There was no place you'd rather be.

Okay, I've got a request. An angst filled Captain (who is also Y/N from Heist and DA from WKM) who is very distraught about not being able to share everything they've been through before the Invincible II with the Engineer because they are afraid to confide in him, because they suspect that this is yet another role of the Actor and they have no idea who to trust. What will come out of this premise is up to you!
omg anon i LOVE the way you think! hehehehe i had fun with this one, definitely came easier to me than fluff lmao
Enjoy!
TW: panic attack, unreliable narrator
----------------
The Captain sat forward in their chair. Their hands were splayed on their desk. Mark stood at the room’s door with his arms crossed and a leg over the other. He looked smug. What else was new?
“A toast?”
“Yeah! We’re on day 241 since the last reset.” Mark smirked as he offered the Captain a glass of red wine. “I counted.”
“Evidently,” said the Captain. They graciously accepted the glass and opened their visor, revealing their face. They had a relaxed smile. “What a life.”
“Well, life is for the living, eh?” Mark said, grinning.
What?
Distantly, something crashed. Maybe fell.
No. That smile. It’s uncanny. No no no no no no no no no no
“Hey-- Captain? What’s wrong?”
He can’t be back. He can’t he can’t he can’t
“Captain?”
Why? WHy is he here
“Captain--”
He killed me. He did this he did this he did this it’s all his fault he did this
“Captain!”
The Captain gasped. They brought a hand up to their chest and could feel their lungs heaving in the sterile air. The walls were cold. Too cold. It felt almost suffocating --- this suit felt suffocating. A suit? A formal suit. One for a party or a business conference or a date or a judicial proceeding--- no, a space suit. With a helmet and everything. Space suit. Helmet? Close it. Done. Check.
Mark was crouched in front of them. He started to reach out to the Captain but stopped. “Captain, is it okay if I touch you?”
The Captain shook their head.
“Okay. Well-- yeah, that’s okay.” Mark sat down. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Another head shake. No.
Mark nodded and eventually, as he sat and waited, the Captain’s breathing slowed down enough
“Where--” Their throat felt dry. “Where did you hear that?”
“Hear what?”
“Don’t play dumb with me, Mark!” the Captain yelled. They banged their face on the metal walls. Mark looked concerned. Then, after a deep breath, in a quieter voice, they said, “...the saying.”
“Life is for--?”
The Captain nodded solemnly.
Mark scratched his head. “I dunno. I think I heard it in some video on the holonet once. I thought it sounded cool. Real poetic.”
Narcissistic bastard--
……
if this is really him.
“Captain, do you mind me asking why?”
Tell him. He’s your friend. “It’s nothing. I just needed to… ground myself.”
Not a friend?
Mark looked like he had something to say but the Captain started to get up and he moved quickly to support them. The Captain jolted. Hesitantly, they accepted the help. Mark helped them move to their desk chair. But then his hands grabbed at the Captain’s helmet, mere inches from their visor, and their arms reflexively stopped him, gripping his wrists harshly.
“What are you doing?” Fear laced the Captain’s voice.
“Removing your helmet? You sounded like you hit the wall really hard and--”
“Who gave you permission to do so, Head Engineer?”
But. We’re old friends. You’ve said this is okay before--”
“I will not repeat myself.”
Mark gaped. He took a step back and tightened his hands behind his back, maybe rubbing at his wrists while he was at it. He looked small. “Apologies, Captain. Permission to leave?”
“Granted.”
As soon as Mark left, the Captain turned off the lights. In the comfort and anonymity of the darkness, they struggled to stifle a sob.

Hey since there are an infinite amount of universes all happening at the same time that means there's an infinite amount of universes where The Multiverse is still being actively destroyed and reborn and infinite Mark and The Captains going through those ordeals which also means a Mark and Captain who got the good Hold On ending could end up in one of the universes where it hasn't ended yet and have to relive it all over again

I have so many unearthly/cryptid Y/N (and/or DA if you will) ideas rumbling in my head but I haven’t gotten the excuse to write any of them into anything I want to post but just know every time I see people write about it I’m like those four guys cheering on the couch

Every time some of y'all put the Captain and the Head Engineer in the manor, y'all remind me of the dream I had where Engineer!Mark and I ended up outside the manor
Only to be found by Wilford Warfstache
Who took us away and had us pose for a painting he was doing
And then sent Mark and I to my childhood house (aka my actual house irl)
Where my extended family was waiting for my parents to return home so we could have a family reunion
Which led to an impromptu reunion with me and my cousins and my family being curious about Mark (especially with how we just appeared out of nowhere)–
–but anyway! Maybe that's a story for another time.

Anniversaries
Characters: Head Engineer x GN!Captain
Word Count: 672
Spicy Rating: No spicy concerns here!
Tumblr media
You felt the frown deepen on your face as you realized, you've seen this before. Watching the high speed, perpetually stuck in one place, desperation of your head engineer spending lifetime after lifetime, whittling away at the scene before you. Rebuilding the warpcore. The breakdowns on the side you missed before, the eerie way that, all at once, every single head turned towards you.
"Hi, Captain."
The way the extinguisher bounced off the back of your head...it had hurt more at the time, a sharp sudden crash against your skull. Now it felt like a dull ache.
You watched the scene play out again, and before you felt...god, what didn't you feel, originally? The hurt of clearly losing his trust, the pain of knowing that you were just a little too late...the way that you needed to tell him, desperately, the truth he wasn't willing to listen to. Would he even have listened, then?
It all continued the way you thought it would, the way you remembered it. Holding tight to his hand, reaching down desperately for the warp crystal he had just ripped out of where it had been embedded into your hand. Him pleading, begging you to let him go.
You hadn't. You held on, you--
This time, you let go.
You looked down at your hand in horror, as the blue wormhole collapsed upon itself, wondering why. You hadn't. You wouldn't. Why why why why why why why WHY WHY WHY--
--
Panting, you blinked, making the bleary ceiling of your bedroom come into focus. The sweat coating your skin in a thin layer was chilling quickly, faster as you pushed your way out of your tangled sheets, the cold touch of the floor under your bare feet helping shock your brain a little closer to awake.
The memory-dream was real. Too real. But you knew, you knew that you had held on, you would have never let go, right?
You didn't realize you were breathing quite so hard until a gentle hand brushed your spine, making you jump. The touch went from fleeting to solid as he pressed his palm more firmly against your back.
"Captain?" His voice was raspy and sleep-laden, but you knew it as well as you knew your own heartbeat. You whipped around, almost throwing yourself into his waiting arms. Like he knew this was coming. "What...did you remember something again?"
You paused, before slowly nodding. Long ago, or not so long ago in the grand scheme of hundreds of lifetimes, you had worked out non-verbal responses. A hesitation like that, and a slow nod, meant "yes, but not quite."
"...Something changed?"
Another nod from you, more immediate than your last. His arms tightened around you, grounding you, your cheek against his chest. Closing your eyes, you could hear his slow, steady heartbeat. Proof that he was alive, here beside you. You hadn't let go.
There's long silence from your head engineer as Mark checks the datapad on his nightstand. He winced, then nodded, his chin resting on the top of your head.
"It's been a year," he whispered softly. "A year since...since we arrived here." You looked up, as he holds you tighter, just for a moment. "A year since...You know I don't hate you, right? That...that I love you."
You nod, as he took a longer, deeper breath.
"I've never stopped blaming myself for the things I said and did to you. What I thought about you. I know, I know that they weren't true. That it was hurt and pain and desperation speaking. But...that's no excuse. How could I treat you like that?"
His voice goes impossibly softer. "I wish I could go back, stop myself, do something--"
Mark stops, blinking as he realizes your hands are now holding his face, keeping him there. The small grimace of pain fades, turning into a soft smile. "But I can't, can I? You said you'd never let me go, Captain...and I'm never letting you go either. Let's keep holding on to each other forever?"

oh hello! this was a pleasant surprise!

you can read this as romantic or platonic btw, however you want! enjoy!
----------------------------------
In space, the stars never went away. For as much as Celci complained about all the windows installed on the Invincible II, they made it possible to see all the faraway specs of light, the occasional floating rock or two. There were times they even passed another planet, off in the distance.
The large floor-to-ceiling window in the control deck was the Captain’s favorite place to stare out from. Especially when everyone else went to sleep for the day, it gave them a sense of tranquility that contrasted so definitively from the hustle and bustle of keeping this ship and its crew in working order. Mark knew that if the Captain were anywhere, it would be there. He lit up when he saw them.
“Captain! Care for a drink?” Mark asked, smiling, as he swung around the control panel. He held two champagne glasses. This particular reset was a relatively peaceful one; the two of them, the Captain and he, had found a way to get the ship out of the wormhole without immediately dying. They lost some of the crew and frozen passengers but nothing compared to the other times the universe reset itself. A bit of celebration was in order and even then, Mark really wanted to share a dignified drink.
The Captain was indeed in front of the large window in the control deck. Their helmet covered their head, as it always did, but Mark knew them well enough. The way their shoulders were sagged even as their hands were cupped behind their back. The extremely slow rise and fall of their chest as they breathed. Frowning, Mark set the glasses down on the panel and asked, “Something on your mind, Captain?”
They turned and regarded him for a moment before speaking, soft and clear, “Do you think this is the one?”
Mark didn’t answer. They continued, “We’ve gotten out of the wormhole before and then it resets anyways. Later. How are we sure--”
“Captain.” Mark gently reached for their arm. “If it happens again, you’ll figure out a way. I know you will.”
He grabbed one of the champagne glasses and placed it firmly in the Captain’s open hand. Then, he grabbed a glass for himself and playfully hit it against the other. It made a clink! noise. Mark smiled, “You’re the captain! Nothing you can’t do, eh?”
The Captain stared at their glass for a moment. Mark maintained his smile and in a move he never saw coming, the Captain laughed. It was short but loud, relaxed but gleeful, and their free hand lifted up their helmet’s visor. Among the crew, it was nonexistent to see the Captain’s face but Mark knew them from way back and trust came with that longevity. The big smile the Captain had on their face was still the same as ever.
“Thank you, my engineer,” they said.
“Always, Captain. I was planning on just one drink but you seem like you need more. Wanna go raid Gunther’s stash?”
“He has a stash of alcohol on my ship?”
Mark winked. “You didn’t hear it from me.”
