Tips and Tricks for Beginning to Intermediate Skiers
Hello! My name is Genevieve Froman, and I am a skier from Minnesota. I not only ski here, but have gone on trips out west multiple times and consider myself an experienced skier. Because I have only been Skiing for a couple of years, I know what it's like to be a beginner. If you don't know how to ski, click here.
The first tactic that I chose to cover is navigating a hill, and a map. While this may sound simple and not important, being a beginner means you need to know where you are going, so you don't get caught on a hill too hard. When looking at a map for the first time, it is going to be confusing. That's why I am here; to help you out. The first thing you will see are lines going down the hill. Those represent the runs, and help you navigate a safe run that fits your experience level.
Tumblr media
This picture is a map of Plattekill Mountain. Creds to Plattekill Mountain
-Green (Circle), are the easiest.
-Blue (Square) are the intermediate runes,
-Black (diamond) are difficult runs.
-Double black diamonds are the most difficult ones, other than special runs, such as triple blacks, expert runs, ect.
On some maps, there will be other special runs, such as orange, which is a trick park. The red lines are the lifts. There are more specific symbols on a map, but those will be labeled.
Okay, so now you know what run you want to go on, but you aren't sure what to wear to a ski hill. This may seem obvious, but when buying gear it is important to be mindful of what you spend money on.
-A big tip that people may not think about, is buying bright colors. When on the mountain there are a lot of people. So to be able to stay with your group, it is a lot easier to see them with bright, unique colors.
Tumblr media
Picture of me and my friend, at Snowmass, CO
-Another tip I would say is to have goggles. These aren't necessary, but definitely help when you start to go faster, and to prepare for weather.
-When looking at a coat, look for a shell rather than a full winter coat. This also is not necessary, but if you plan to ski in the spring, or in different climates there is going to be a range of temperatures. By using a shell you layer for both warmer and cooler days.
-If you are planning to buy gloves, buy mitten-style. On cold days, it keeps your fingers way warmer. I have a pair of glove-style gloves, and my fingers always end up numb or hurting on days when it is cold. Also look for ones with a strap so when you take them off, they don't fall.
Those are some of the biggest gear tricks that I thought were helpful in my skiing experience. Here are some of the top places to buy gear, ready to shred.
Now you have all the gear you need, and are feeling confident in your skiing ability. Where do you go next? After conquering some greens, definitely try blues. After blues, then blacks, and so on until you are ripping down the double black expert runs. But it isn't always that simple. To climb the ladder in your skill, you need to expand the terrain you are skiing. Try out some tree runs, moguls, ungroomed runs, parks, etc. The most important thing with trying out something new in skiing, is to take it slow. Start with slow turns, and if you feel confident, go a little faster. But if you ever feel like you are going too fast or out of control, stop immediately and re-group. It is not worth it to be out of control and get hurt. It is also good to know what you like. I really enjoy powder, tree runs, and more of the technical runs, but also enjoy steep runs. One of my friends likes steep groomed runs best. It all depends on the person.
I hope this will help you for the upcoming season to be safe, successful, and have fun.

South of Boston, Wompatuck State Park offers diverse single-track trails for mountain biking. From new, fast-paced routes to older trails featuring technical turns, log-overs, and rocky terrain, all riders can hit their strides. Accessing the park is convenient even without a car, with the Cohasset Commuter Rail Station nearby and the Whitney Spur Rail Trail only a short ride from the park.
Abram’s Rock/Village Park in Swansea offers terrain near the South Coast for beginning to intermediate riders. The trails boast smooth paths punctuated by unique rock formations such as Wildcat Rock and Lion Rock. Bikers can reach some of these formations, which offer scenic views from their peaks. The trail system also incorporates technical features such as rock drops, log-overs, and teeter-totters. Heavily used trails in the park include Bridges and Rusty Cars, which offer the opportunity to complete 10- to 12-mile journeys. For advanced riders seeking a challenge, trails such as Thing 2 and Superman, the system’s only Double Black Diamond-rated trail (the most advanced trail rating for mountain biking routes), provide thrilling experiences.
Vietnam Trails in Milford are for bikers seeking a technical challenge. The New England Mountain Biking Association maintains these trails. Farther south, the trails become increasingly technical and offer riders obstacles such as big drops and rocky features. This 47-acre trail system comprises routes ranging from easy to advanced. Four parking areas provide direct access to the Conservation Land surrounding Vietnam Trails. The Adams Street parking area is the most popular trailhead because it grants easy entry to the technical southern section.
Leominster State Forest spans 4,246 acres across several Massachusetts towns and boasts an extensive trail network popular among mountain bikers. Nestled in the forest is the Crow Hills, an isolated rock hill with dual summits. This trail system comprises 10 miles of advanced single-track trails covering diverse terrain.
Thunder Mountain Bike Park in Charlemont offers a range of trails, from beginner-friendly greens to pro-line jumps. The well-maintained trails cater to all skill levels. For beginners, riders can experience the Sugar Line or tackle intermediate challenges such as The Gronk. Advanced riders can push their limits on advanced trails such as Juggernaut and Hawleywood. Thunder Mountain Bike Park offers rentals and lessons for those without gear or experience.

Beaver Mountain, “The Beav” -
I found Beaver Mountain a couple of years ago when I moved to Cache Valley, UT for work. I quickly learned to love this mountain for a bunch of reasons which I’ll outline in this article. In fact, Beaver Mountain was one of the key reasons I started this project. It is one of, if not the best, ROI resorts I’ve ever been to. It’s affordable, family owned, has great terrain, maintains quality snow throughout the season, and most importantly is a ton of fun to ride.
Beaver Mountain was founded in 1938 by the Seeholzer family. You can regularly find Marge Seeholzer handing out day passes at the ticket office. The mountain is currently operated by Travis Seeholzer who has continued the multi-generational family legacy of being amazing stewards of this mountain. This resort has maintained an incredible community feeling which is palpable from the moment you arrive. When you ride at Beaver Mountain you’ll quickly feel like you're part of the family.
One unique thing about Beaver Mountain is the ski patrol staff is made up of unpaid volunteers. I’ve had several good conversations with the patrol team while riding on the chairlift and from what I understand the resort does cover some training costs, but these volunteers are paying for most of their own gear, gas to get to the resort, and obviously donating their time and energy. If that doesn’t prove this is a family/community resort I don’t know what will!
I’m going to make a bold statement which I personally believe with all of my heart, you get more bang for your buck at Beaver Mountain than anywhere else in Utah. A full day pass is currently only $70 and you can always find something fun to do at this mountain regardless of the snow conditions. Pow-days at Beaver are incredibly fun with a variety of terrain to ride. Even if the snow isn’t new you can usually find nice snow pockets in the trees or on the far boundary lines of the resort. If it’s been a while since snow fell, there are still great groomed runs and the terrain parks are a lot of fun.
There are 2 terrain parks at Beaver Mountain. The beginner park is near the top of the mountain and can be found by taking Harry’s Dream lift and following the Gentle Ben run. It’s called the Gentle Ben Terrain Park and has mostly beginner features including small jumps, box rails, and occasionally flat bar rails. This park is the perfect place to learn the basic principles of how to ride a park safely. Even as an advanced park rider I still enjoy going through this beginner park because it’s laid out very simply so it’s a great place to warm up and work on the basics.
The intermediate/advanced terrain park is on the far side of the resort which is accessed by Marges Triple lift. You follow the Ted’s Rock cat track for about two hundred yards and you’ll find the entrance to the park. The typical layout of the park includes two or three large jumps which lead into the jib section of the park where you’ll typically find about a dozen features to choose from including flat bar rails, kinked rails, smaller technical jumps, and other unique features. The park crew at Beaver does a great job of maintaining this run and introduces new features on a regular basis.
Some of my favorite runs at Beaver Mountain are: Canyon View, North Face, Gentle Ben, Skid Road, Sour Grapes, and the Rodeo Grounds Terrain Park run. There are other areas of this mountain that I really like which are less known to the public and for the sake of the locals who call this mountain home I’m going to leave those out of this article, but just know if you’re willing to explore a bit you can find some incredible things at Beaver Mountain.
The beginner slopes at Beaver Mountain are great to learn the basics on. There are 2 magic carpets near the lodge on an extremely mild slope. This area is perfect for brand new beginners. Once that area is mastered the Little Beaver lift is the next step. The Little Beaver lift features a triple lift which takes the rider a few hundred yards up the mountain and allows access to some steeper beginner terrain. There are a variety of runs which vary in difficulty, but it’s great terrain to learn on.
There are three triple lifts (Harry’s Dream Lift, Marge’s Triple Lift, Little Beaver Lift), one double lift (Beaver’s Face Lift), plus 2 magic carpets. This resort maintains approximately 828 acres of land which doesn’t include plenty of additional unmanaged accessible terrain just outside of its boundaries. It has 1,600 ft of vertical drop with a base elevation of 7,200 ft and a peak elevation of 8,800 ft. This mountain relies 100% on mother nature for it’s snow (which is advertised to be 400” annually).
The A-frame lodge is where you’ll find most people taking their lunch break. Another major advantage to Beaver Mountain is the food is good and much more affordable than most other resorts. As a side note, I highly recommend giving the signature Beaver Sauce a try with a chicken strip and fry basket. There are also some great street tacos in the adjacent structure to the main lodge.
One issue which occasionally happens at Beaver Mountain is that the parking lot fills up to full capacity. This is most likely to occur during holiday breaks and busy weekends (mostly from December - early February). When it does happen it can be very difficult to find a place to park.
It’s also entirely possible that ski lift lines get backed up and you could be looking at a 15+ minute wait to catch a chairlift. Luckily this doesn’t happen super regularly and if you’re willing to use the singles line it speeds things up.
All in all I’d give Beaver Mountain a 95/100 in terms of ROI. Just to reiterate, Beaver is possibly the best bang for your buck in the state of Utah. I highly recommend giving it a shot if you haven’t tried it yet.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through the essential factors to consider when selecting the ideal skateboard that suits your style, skill level, and the local Orange County terrain.
Know Your Skill Level:
Before you start browsing through various skateboard options, it’s crucial to assess your skill level honestly. Are you a complete beginner, an intermediate skater, or an advanced rider seeking a custom setup? Knowing your skill level will help you narrow down your choices and find the perfect skateboard that aligns with your abilities.
Types of Skateboards in Orange County:
Orange County’s diverse skating scene demands versatile boards. Here are the main types of skateboards available:
Street Skateboards: Ideal for performing tricks and maneuvers in urban environments.
Cruiser Skateboards: Perfect for cruising around town and commuting short distances.
Longboards: Great for downhill speed, stability, and long-distance cruising.
Park Skateboards: Designed for ramp skating and skate parks.
Mini Cruisers: Compact and portable skateboards for easy transportation.
Skateboard Deck:
The skateboard deck is the foundation of your setup. Consider these factors while choosing the right deck:
Size: Deck sizes are typically measured in width. A wider deck provides more stability, while a narrower one offers better maneuverability.
Material: Maple wood decks are the most popular due to their durability and performance.

Trucks are the metal T-shaped components that connect the wheels to the deck. Here’s what to consider:
Width: Match the truck width to your deck size for optimal performance.

Height: Lower trucks provide stability, while higher trucks allow for better clearance during turns and tricks.
Skateboard Wheels:
Wheels play a significant role in your overall riding experience. Consider the following:
Durometer: Durometer measures wheel hardness. Softer wheels (78A-87A) offer more grip and a smoother ride, while harder wheels (99A and above) are ideal for tricks and park skating.
Diameter: Larger wheels provide more speed and roll over cracks easily, while smaller wheels offer better control for technical tricks.
Skateboard Bearings:
Bearings are essential for the smooth rotation of your wheels. Look for high-quality bearings rated on the ABEC scale (higher ABEC numbers indicate better precision).

Visit GreenRoom OC in Orange County and try out different boards. Get a feel for the deck size, shape, and overall setup. Testing a skateboard before purchase ensures a comfortable fit for your skating style.

Maximising Performance: How to Choose the Perfect Rollerblade Skates
The quest for the perfect rollerblade skates can be a daunting one. With so many options available in the market, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to start.
The right pair of skates for adults in Australia can significantly enhance your performance and enjoyment while gliding through the streets or zooming down the park. But how do you navigate through the sea of choices to find the ideal fit for you?
In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the intricacies of choosing rollerblade skates that not only suit your style but also maximise your performance on wheels.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Rollerblade Skates
When embarking on the exhilarating journey of choosing rollerblade skates, there are various crucial factors to take into account. Firstly, it is essential to consider your skill level and intended use. Are you a beginner seeking comfort and stability, or an experienced skater yearning for speed and maneuverability? This distinction will guide you towards the appropriate skate style.
Tumblr media
Secondly, pay close attention to the fit of the rollerblade skate. A snug yet comfortable fit is vital for optimal performance. A loose boot may impede control and cause discomfort, while a tight one can lead to restricted movement and potential injuries. Ensure that your chosen skate provides proper ankle support without sacrificing flexibility.
Lastly, consider your budget when selecting rollerblade skates. While it may be tempting to splurge on high-end models boasting advanced features, there are often affordable options that offer outstanding performance.
Choosing the Right Boot Style
When it comes to maximising performance on roller blades Australia, selecting the perfect boot style is crucial. The right boot should provide a comfortable and secure fit, allowing for precise control and maneuverability. There are various boot styles to choose from, each catering to different skating disciplines and levels of expertise.
For beginners or those seeking recreational skating, a soft boot style is ideal. These boots offer excellent comfort and flexibility, allowing skaters to enjoy their time on wheels without sacrificing support. Additionally, soft boots often come with adjustable closures such as buckles or laces, providing a customisable fit for enhanced comfort and stability.
Intermediate and advanced skaters may prefer a hybrid or hard shell boot style. Hybrid boots combine the best qualities of both soft and hard shell boots, offering a balance between comfort and responsiveness. On the other hand, hard shell boots prioritise stability and performance through their rigid construction. With advanced features like heat-moldable liners that conform to your foot shape over time, these boots ensure optimum power transfer for an exhilarating skating experience.
Evaluating Boot Materials and Construction
The selection of boot materials plays a significant role in enhancing the overall performance and durability of rollerblade skates. Manufacturers employ a variety of materials, each with its own unique characteristics.
Advanced composite materials like carbon fiber offer exceptional stiffness and lightness, providing skaters with enhanced power transfer and responsiveness on the road or track. Additionally, these high-performance materials ensure greater longevity, allowing skaters to enjoy their favorite activity for years to come.
Examining Wheel Types and Sizes
Wheel type and size play a crucial role in the performance of rollerblade skates. Different wheel types offer varied characteristics, each catering to specific skating styles. For instance, hard wheels are perfect for outdoor use as they provide durability and faster speeds, while soft wheels offer better grip and control for indoor or smooth surfaces.
It's important to consider your skating preferences and the terrain you'll be traversing to make an informed choice.
Understanding Bearing Systems
The bearing system of rollerblade skaters plays a crucial role in ensuring a smooth and efficient ride. These small but mighty components are responsible for reducing friction and allowing the wheels to rotate freely. A high-quality bearing system can significantly enhance your skating experience, enabling you to glide effortlessly along the pavement.
When it comes to bearings, there are various factors to consider. One important aspect is the ABEC rating, which indicates the precision and quality of the bearings. Higher ABEC ratings, such as 9 or 11, generally denote smoother and more reliable performance. However, it's essential to note that ABEC ratings primarily pertain to industrial applications and may not have a significant impact on recreational rollerblading.
Looking at Additional Features and Accessories
When it comes to rollerblade skates, there are several additional features and accessories that can enhance your skating experience.
One such feature is the brake system. A well-designed brake can provide you with optimal control and safety while gliding along the pavement. Look for a brake that is easy to engage and disengage, ensuring seamless transitions between speed and stopping.
Conclusion
In conclusion, by carefully considering the factors outlined in this article, you can embark on a rollerblade skating journey that is both exhilarating and rewarding. Remember, the choice of roller blades Australia is a personal one, and finding the perfect pair may require some trial and error. But with patience and perseverance, you will discover skates that not only fit like a glove but also enhance your performance on every glide.

How to Choose the Right Skis for Your Skill Level and Terrain
When it comes to skiing, having the right equipment can make all the difference in your performance and enjoyment on the slopes. Choosing the right skis is essential, as they need to match both your skill level and the type of terrain you'll be skiing on. In this comprehensive guide, we'll take you through the factors to consider and provide valuable insights to help you select the perfect skis for your abilities and preferred terrain.
Determine Your Skill Level: Before delving into the details of ski selection, it's crucial to assess your skiing abilities honestly. Skill levels generally fall into three categories:
a. Beginner: If you're new to skiing or have limited experience, look for skis that offer stability, forgiveness, and ease of turning. Opt for softer flex skis with a narrower waist, as they are more maneuverable and provide better control.
b. Intermediate: If you can comfortably link turns and ski on varied terrain, you're an intermediate skier. Consider skis that strike a balance between stability and maneuverability. Look for medium flex skis with a slightly wider waist for improved stability on varying snow conditions.
c. Advanced/Expert: Advanced skiers who can confidently tackle challenging terrain and enjoy high speeds should opt for stiffer flex skis with wider waists. These skis provide enhanced stability, responsiveness, and superior performance on groomed runs, moguls, or powder.
Identify Your Preferred Terrain: Understanding the type of terrain you'll be skiing on is crucial when selecting skis. Different skis are designed for specific conditions and terrains, including:
a. All-Mountain Skis: If you enjoy exploring various terrain types, including groomed runs, moguls, and off-piste adventures, all-mountain skis are your best bet. These versatile skis offer a good balance of stability, maneuverability, and performance on different snow conditions.
b. Powder Skis: If you frequently find yourself seeking the deep snow and off-piste areas, powder skis are designed to keep you afloat. They feature wider waists, increased rocker, and a more pronounced tip to effortlessly glide through powder and provide excellent floatation.
c. Carving Skis: Carving skis are ideal for those who love the sensation of laying down precise turns on groomed runs. These skis have a narrow waist, a stiff flex, and deep sidecuts that allow for quick edge-to-edge transitions and maximum carving performance.
d. Freestyle Skis: If you're into jumps, tricks, and skiing in the terrain park, freestyle skis are designed for you. These skis are typically twin-tipped, allowing you to ski both forwards and backwards, with a symmetrical flex and a durable construction to withstand park features.
Consider Ski Length: Ski length plays a vital role in determining how the skis will perform for your specific skill level and terrain. While personal preferences can influence the choice, the following guidelines can help:
a. Shorter Skis: Shorter skis are generally easier to maneuver, making them suitable for beginners or those who prioritize quick turns and agility. They are also beneficial in moguls and tight spaces.
b. Longer Skis: Longer skis offer better stability, enhanced performance at high speeds, and improved floatation in powder. Advanced skiers often prefer longer skis for their increased edge grip and versatility on varied terrain.
Flex and Stiffness: The flex and stiffness of skis determine their responsiveness and stability. Softer flex skis are forgiving, easier to control, and recommended for beginners and intermediates. Stiffer flex skis provide better stability, power transfer, and edge grip, making them suitable for advanced and expert skiers who seek high-speed performance and aggressive turns.
Consider Ski Width: The width of skis, often referred to as waist width, impacts their performance on different snow conditions. Narrower waist skis (75-85mm) are more responsive and excel on groomed runs, providing quick edge-to-edge transitions and carving ability. Wider waist skis (90mm or more) offer improved floatation in powder and stability in variable conditions. For all-mountain skiing, a waist width between 85-95mm is a popular choice as it provides a good balance between versatility and performance.
Research and Read Reviews: Before making a final decision, take the time to research different ski models and read reviews from reliable sources. Pay attention to feedback from skiers with similar skill levels and preferences as yours. Their experiences can offer valuable insights and help you narrow down your options.
Demo Skis: Whenever possible, try to demo skis before making a purchase. Many ski resorts and specialty ski shops offer demo programs where you can test various models. This hands-on experience will allow you to feel how different skis perform on the slopes and give you a better understanding of what works best for your skill level and terrain.
Seek Professional Advice: If you're unsure about which skis to choose, don't hesitate to seek advice from ski experts or knowledgeable professionals at ski shops. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific needs and help you find the perfect skis that align with your skill level, terrain preferences, and budget.
