Still transferring the archive of my old sketchbooks across from one account to the other after having my old account disabled and then restored without explanation. Another largely inexplicable set from the Book of Forgiveness including two collages of mine. The first was based around the small polystyrene white disk I had found that looked like s Eucharistic Host and the Catholic in me thought, “what if I had actually taken a host and put it in my sketchbook?!” The idea seemed so outrageous that even to include something that looked like the Host was pretty extreme. For those of you not haunted by your upbringing, the Host is the communion wafer which is the transubstantiated body of Christ or Corpus Christi. The remainder is a found image of Soviet soldiers to balance it with textures and colour. Next is a page of angels with a chonkey cherub on a lead watched over by Jedathun, corrupted here as the “Archangel of Howling”- after that, and making much more sense I let @jaso.connell help with this sketchbook when she was only little and asked her to map out her flat and draw whatever she wanted - the page after my angels also seems to be someone ascending in a cloud. Before she announces the end of her section there is also a dangerous robot in the bathroom. The Jungian concept of Anima is a slippery fish. The shallow read of it, as I’ve understood it so far, is that it’s masculinity’s internalized and imprinted concept of the feminine. Anima is also best buds w the shadow. They sleep on a futon in the basement of your mind while you lay awake all night listening to them fuck. In this show I’m doing with @aaronjohnsonart there are 7 portraits of Anima, 1 of which is huge and in some sense an attempt at understanding this concept collectively; Western machismo as Anima Possessed. Each has a surfer quickly stick and poked, blasted over top. While I dont pretend to be much of a surfer I have found it to be a powerful personal metaphor. I think of it like a superficial adrenaline crazed yet fearful character skimming precariously across the surface of the abyss that is inhabited by those deeper, more disturbing bedfellows of shadow and anima. Someone who visits this territory but briefly, juicing the fear and risk of it all. But its an iterative thing I think. Fear and acceptance doing a goddam do-see-do in and out of the light. In the end is all this flattened? Unified? And truth be told, I’m confused about it all, I don’t think I really get it but I’m certainly feeling it. Going thru it, pushing along towards what I think is a better way for me to be in the world. Utopian. Happy 75th birthday to David Lynch! This is the only soundtrack I have of any of his films, and it’s a good one. Copped this at @mrsuitrecords years ago. The movie creeps me out and the soundtrack doesn’t fail on that either. Perfectly Lynchian.
