one thing that i think is telling about me is that if werewolves were real and i knew someone that was one i simply would never put 2 and 2 together. their secret would be safe with me because i do not think about other people enough to figure something like that out. whenever someone comes out to me as gay it’s a complete shock because the thought has never crossed my mind once. one of my friends in college could never hang out on friday evenings and one time (3 and a half years in) i asked her about it and she was like “rayanne…. it’s shabbat”. i am also jewish and i didn’t realize that she was too.

Week 5 in Limerick
Hey guys, it’s Katie again, and here’s what happened this past week in Limerick.
Monday: Today, I changed up the procedure in the lab a bit. I’m using the same amount of sludge and acid, but I add the acid after running the reactor, then run it again at a lower temperature. Based on the results from today, it’s possible that doing this results in more liquid product and less hydrochar, but I will need to do a few more trials to be sure. We didn’t do much that evening besides hang out, but we had plans to go kayaking the next day, so it was nice to have a chill evening.
Tuesday: I started by repeating the experiment from yesterday, but during the second run of the HTC reactor, it heated past the set temperature, so I had to discard the products. It wasn’t a huge deal since I have plenty of time to run the various trials, but it was a little frustrating. In the evening, we went kayaking. We lucked out with the weather because it had been pouring rain on and off all day, but cleared up when we went out on the river. It was different than expected since we stayed in the same area on the river and played kayaking games like kayak polo, races, and kayak tag. It was a great time, even though I crashed into everyone multiple times.
Wednesday: Today we switched things up a bit in the lab by going to use the scanning electron microscope, or SEM, to look at the hydrochar I collected. This ended up being kind of boring because they didn’t have time to train me on how to use the SEM, so I mostly watched Nina look at the samples and practice adjusting the microscope to see better. There was also a program to show some of the elements contained within the hydrochar, and to save pictures of the SEM view. Afterwards, it was too late to start another trial that would take hours, so I went home for the day. I took a quick trip to downtown Limerick to get a book, The Priory of the Orange Tree, which I had heard good things about.

Thursday: Today, I retried the experiment procedure from earlier in the week, because Nina and I were not sure why the product in the reactor overheated. I observed the temperature, and when it once again went over 10 degrees above the set point, I told Nina, but this time she told me to collect the product as usual, suspecting an exothermic reaction caused by the acid. Unfortunately, I spilled some of my product at the end, so I couldn't get accurate mass measurements. Friday was pretty much the same, so there's not much to say there.
Saturday: Today, Pascale and I took a bus up to Dublin for the Pride Parade. It was my first one, and it was so cool to watch everyone marching and dancing by, having a great time. Super excited to go to another one next year. Then, I went to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College. First, I walked through a room with information about Irish illuminated manuscripts, which had some enlarged photos of the pages (we can't take photos of the actual book). Then, I saw the original Book of Kells in its own room, and walked up to the Old Library. It had busts of several famous people, as well as manuscripts from an old wealthy family's collection. Once that was over, Pascale and I walked around a little more, got food, and almost missed our bus back to Limerick because we couldn't find the stop. In the evening, we went to the David Bowie Experience at Dolan's, which had a band performing Bowie's greatest hits. It was very loud, but lots of fun, and the band did a great job.

Sunday: Since we were all tired from the concert last night, we took it easy in the morning. In the mid-afternoon, Pascale and I took a bus to see the Rock of Cashel, a complex of medieval buildings with great historical and religious significance. In the 25 minutes or so we had before closing, Pascale and I explored the old Gothic cathedral, graveyard, and chapel, all of which have fascinating histories. The Rock of Cashel is known as the legendary site where St. Patrick banished the devil, as well as the seat of the High Kings of Munster (Southern Ireland). Afterwards, we caught the next bus back to Limerick, grabbed a quick dinner, and headed back to the apartment.

I think we should talk about the Orange Notes.
Because, okay, listen--I was a band kid in college. All of us loved band. None of us wanted to be at any sporting event (I mean, that's a bit of hyperbole; I'm a hockey fan so I enjoyed playing at those games).
Which is to say, those kids only nominally signed up for all this. They were like hell yeah play some music maybe get a thousand dollars in scholarship--oh fuck what is happening???
That's not to mention--exy games are Friday nights in the fall. You know what is Saturday days/evenings, depending on the size and importance of the school, also in the fall? Football games. And the Orange Notes are mentioned as being the campus band, which means they're also the football marching band. Do you have any idea how pissed I'd've been in college if I had to give up my Friday evenings and all day Saturday? It was bad enough playing one day a week at sporting events I didn't want to be at.
And this is on top of--if they're also a marching band, like my college band was, they're practicing a few times a week to have that field show down. Field shows take a lot of work, and that's if you're doing the same one every week. I was at a small school (~3000 students total), so we did one show for the whole season. My brother goes to a Big10 school where football game attendees can get up to 100,000+ (the one I went to came in at almost 106,000), and he's in the band there. They do a different show every week. Their rehearsals are insane.
When I was in band, we played at every home football game (except for the one that was the weekend of fall break), the nearby (within 3 hours drive) away football games, hockey games, and basketball games. But we didn't do more than one event a weekend. During football season, that was it. After the season ended we would play at either a hockey game, which was either Friday or Saturday night, or a basketball event on Saturday day (the women's and men's teams played back to back, so we stayed through both, which was a nightmare for a lot of non-sport related reasons).
But--no matter how the band feels about being at a sporting event, they're doing Band Things. They're playing pep songs, they're cheering, they're playing the fight song. The band can be some of a team's biggest fans, and the ones that always stand by them. Even when, say, the starting strikers can't get along. They're still there playing ten-measure stand tunes and cheering for the good things.
And the Orange Notes went to Evermore for the championships! Which, if that had been me when I was in college band, I'd've been a nightmare about. A quick google search shows that it's almost six hours from Columbia SC to Charleston WV, and Palmetto's campus is like 45 minutes south of Columbia, iirc. So the band sat on a bus for like seven hours to play at this game. Do you know how much of an absolute bitch I would have been if that was me in band? Never mind all the other drama that happened, I would have been awful just because of the travel!
So anyway I think the Orange Notes deserve more love because wow do they do a lot for the exy team.
(One final note: I used to think that Orange Notes was such a dumb name, and then I remembered that Penn State's famous marching band is the Blue Band and then it felt less stupid)

On Point With: Sherry Poppins
Tumblr media
The posh third of popular Brooklyn nightlife collective STR8 to DVD, Sherry Poppins got her drag start in college and kept the amazing momentum going. Now in addition to lighting up Brooklyn, this queen has crossed over into Astoria to lay down the kiki!
Thotyssey: Sherry, hello! How’s it going today?
Sherry Poppins: Hey there! I'm doing fine, just relaxing before painting for a gig.
Oh, where are you tonight?
I'm co-hosting CAKES with Mini Horrorwitz.
Werk! Gurl you’re a Brooklyn queen, you’re sometimes a Manhattan queen, and now you’re a Queens queen! Have you done shows in Staten Island yet?
You'd have to pay me a pretty penny to head over there! Though I do love ferry rides...
Tumblr media
Where's your hometown?
I'm originally from Oceanside, Long Island.
Bougie!
Haha! I'm so glad i'm not there anymore, though!
You're a SUNY Purchase queen. What did you study there before drag?
I was a fine art photography major, with a minor in Chinese language.
Amazing! Can you still speak Chinese well?
I'm still semi-conversational, actually! I definitely lost it a bit since I don’t have many outlets for practice. I want to go live there eventually, for a time.
You’d be a great fit! So, Purchase has the famous dragstravaganza Fall Ball, which makes it a nest for countless great queens in this city and beyond. What were the circumstances when you first tried drag there?
Miz Jade (The Queen of Shade) was actually the first person to have me painted and got me into drag. At the time, she and FiFi DuBois were THE queens of Purch. Miz Jade had a show on our college's TV channel called "Hot Mess Express," and asked if I would come on to be painted for a "Drag 101" episode. And the rest was history. I was in my fantasy.
You were born on TV! And Purchase is also where you met some of your closest future Brooklyn cohorts.
Yes! Qhrist With a Q, Maxxx Pleasure and I were definitely Purchase family.
Tumblr media
Was it always your plan to continue drag after college?
Well, before doing it, I *GAG* never planned on being a drag queen at all! But by the time I was a senior, I was so invested in drag because it was a tool for using gender as an artistic medium... and that seemed so limitless. I definitely wanted to continue.
What are big ways that your drag has changed since the Purchase days?
My makeup has definitely been the biggest improvement. I didn't fully understand my face until after graduating. But performance has changed a lot, too. At Purchase, you're kind of encouraged to do 7+ minute mega mixes. So doing drag out of that environment definitely was a bigger learning curve.

Tell us about the creation of STR8 to DVD--the collective you formed with Qhrist & DJ Ten Yards that presents a showcase monthly at Gold Sounds--and what these shows are generally like.
Our love child! Qhrist and I had known right away that we wanted to be doing drag in Brooklyn. And one night we went out to Rockbar in NYC (out of drag); one of the queens performed "Bohemian Rhapsody.” Qhrist and I were just feeling our fantasies, and the realization that we had to have a show together stuck!
A good friend of ours from college, Derek, is one of the owners of Gold Sounds. He said we could do a trial show there, and it was a hit! The next day he reached out and said they'd love to have us as a monthly, and here we are over a year later!
The show is pretty wild because anything goes, basically. We knew we wanted to be able to showcase all sorts of queer performers, from drag, to comedy, to burlesque, etc. We started with booking our friends, but as time went on we networked and now it's been picking up interest! Definitely one of the weirdest, messiest, but most wildly entertaining shows you'll see!
Tumblr media
STR8 to DVD began as a monthly Monday at Gold Sounds, and now it’s moving to monthly Fridays! It's become a favorite show in Brooklyn, and it showcases a lot of new performers and all around bizarre experiences.
Yeah, we encourage new performers all the time! Sometimes they're the wildest!
What stands out in your mind as the nuttiest / best performance you saw at STR8?
There's lots of memorable performances, but one of the most jaw-dropping ones for me was when our door goddess Andrew Breitel took to the stage as Spice Baby. She started with boobs made out of a DIY blood sack that sunk to her stomach after thrashing around--so it accidentally looked like she was pregnant. But then she continued by repeatedly stabbing the sack, bleeding everywhere! Everyone was GAGGED. It reminded me of the Red Wedding from Game Of Thrones. That was back in March for STR8 TO DVD: WIG.
Scandalous! The gang will be back at Gold Sounds on July 27th for a new installment...
Tumblr media
...but first, you’ll all be present there on Saturday the 21st for an interesting one-off, as Sherry Poppins presents a drag tribute to... Panic! At the Disco!
Back in October, Qhrist produced an all drag tribute to My Chemical Romance for their birthday. Though my birthday was back in June (Gemini baby), I decided to do the same. Panic! At The Disco used to be one of my absolute favorite bands, and they're still a big throwback love!
Did you feel any sort of way when Panic! frontman Brendon Urie came out as pansexual recently?
I mean, considering I've always found him very attractive, it made my inner teen heart flutter. But I'm proud of him for doing so. It's great to have pansexual representation with a platform like his!
By the way: who is more emo, you or Qhrist?
DEFINITELY Qhrist... and I'm not afraid to say that either, haha! Their references go so much deeper into the emo world than mine. I was definitely more of a "Scene” kid than an emo kid like them, lol!
Tumblr media
Speaking of Scene, let’s change the scene entirely... Iconic at Astoria’s  Icon! That’s a weekly drag competition hosted by Heidi Haux that debuted a few weeks ago, and you’re competing in it! What motivated you to enter this?
Ah yes, it's been wild so far! Having been doing drag in Brooklyn for a bit, people know me there now. But I moved to Astoria in December, and it's a completely different scene! It felt like starting all over again for a while. So, doing Iconic is a chance to bring a little Brooklyn drag to Queens, but to also get more of a following here in a different borough. It's been so fun so far, but definitely a big challenge!
You’re like the drag BQE!
Tumblr media
Good luck with that, and everything else. What else needs to be said?
Thanks boo! Yes! The Panic at the Disco show will be at 11pm. STR8 TO DVD will be Friday, July 27th at 11pm. Both are at Gold Sounds. And you can come support me at ICONIC every Sunday at 8pm at Icon Astoria! I might even have a new show coming up in Brooklyn soon, but you'll have to stay tuned to find out more!
We will! Okay, last question: will there ever be a Cherry Poppins and Sherry Poppins collaboration?
Hahaha! We always joke about it, but i'm totally down! We've still never worked together, so someone book us! Otherwise, she and I might have to create our own thing. We must give the people what they want!
Pop! Thanks, Sherry!

FOOTBALL. IS. BACK.
ALERT. ALERT. THIS IS NOT A DRILL. AUBURN FOOTBALL KICKS OFF IN THREE HOURS.
CUE RIC “FANS OUTSIDE THE STADIUM” SMITH.
CUE THE BAND.
CUE THE CHEERLEADERS.
CUE THE TEAM.
We’re actually going to get to enjoy Auburn Tiger football today.
Later on this morning (or afternoon if you’re not in God’s time zone), Auburn opens up year number eight of the Gus Malzahn era with the weirdest situation that anyone could’ve ever imagined. With the COVID-19 storyline dominating literally everything since early March, we’ve been devoid of Tiger athletics until last Friday when women’s soccer came back into the fold. After Auburn took down Tennessee in the last regular season basketball game, everything was canceled. No conference tournaments, no NCAA Tournament, and then baseball got canceled. Then spring football got canceled. Then we got into June without really knowing what was going to happen. Then the Big Ten and PAC-12 decided that they wouldn’t risk everyone’s safety.
The SEC didn’t flinch. It was still time to play. If we were welcoming kids back to campus and having football teams practice, then playing actual games wouldn’t pose any higher threat than normal life at this point. We kept on course, only delaying the start of the regular season three weeks and limiting games to SEC play only. That way, a cohesive testing and quarantine policy would be manageable throughout the entire conference.
Finally, it all came down to the schedule release. With no non-con matchups, we would have to hit spin cycle and find the right mix so that each SEC team can play 10 conference games. Some things stayed the same — for instance, Alabama the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Others didn’t. Auburn gets to take on Georgia in Week 2, so that’ll be a trip. But there’s business to attend to first.
Auburn gets to open the weirdest year in recorded history against Kentucky later today. This won’t be easy, but then again, what kind of fun is easy?
SERIES HISTORY: Auburn leads 26-6-1 all-time (Kentucky has only one victory in the series — 2009 — since 1966).
LAST MEETING: Auburn won 30-27 in Lexington back in 2015, with Peyton Barber scoring twice and Ricardo Louis recording 154 receiving yards.
2019 SEASON: Auburn finished 2019 at 9-4, with key wins over Alabama, Oregon, and Texas A&M. Kentucky recorded an 8-5 mark, with wins over Missouri, Louisville, and Virginia Tech.
KEY RETURNING STARTERS:
Auburn: QB Bo Nix (2,542 yards; 57.6%; 16 TDs/6INTs); WR Seth Williams (59 catches; 830 yards; 8 TDs); WR Anthony Schwartz (41 catches, 440 yards, 1 TD); WR Eli Stove (37 catches; 321 yards; 3 TDs); LB K.J. Britt (68 tackles; 10 TFLs; 3.5 sacks); LB Zakoby McClain (55 tackles; 5.5 TFLS; 1 PICK SIX); DE Big Kat Bryant (16 tackles; 1.5 sacks; 1 INT)
Kentucky: QB Terry Wilson (12-3 last 15 starts, injured much of 2019); WR Josh Ali (23 catches; 233 yards; 3 TDs); OT Landon Young; LB Chris Oats (46 tackles; 2.5 TFLS)
KEYS FOR AUBURN
Find some success up front early. Last year against Oregon, Auburn took quite some time to wake up and the Ducks pushed the Tigers around on both sides of the ball. In particular, the Auburn defensive line, even with Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson, got shoved around for the better part of a half. Kentucky’s got a similarly-skilled line, and they can definitely control the line of scrimmage to gain confidence early on. Offensively, the Tigers have some real talent (albeit young) in the backfield. We’re all itching to see who starts to get the majority of the carries in true Gus style, but maybe we see Shaun Shivers, Tank Bigsby, D.J. Williams, and Mark Antony Richards split about 40 carries. If Auburn can run the ball with its bruisers on the offensive line, while they loosen up the passing game, it might help guys like Brodarious Hamm get more comfortable in pass protection. However, Kentucky will be expecting that, so...
Bo Nix needs to show what he’s learned from Chad Morris in the offseason. Let’s make no bones about it, Chad Morris’ Arkansas tenure isn’t indicative of his offensive prowess. The man is largely responsible for Dabo’s Clemson resurgence, and if Bo Nix can come close to the numbers that Tajh Boyd put up, then we’re in for a special year. Nix was at his best when he didn’t seem to have to think about what he was doing, and just running the offense on instinct. See the Mississippi State game and largely the Iron Bowl. He’s got the receivers to make some real noise this year, and if they stay healthy, I’m confident that he’ll break Dameyune Craig’s single season passing record. Oh, and let him run too. He’s faster than you think.
Don’t let Kentucky dictate anything. The Wildcats want to control the clock. Even when Terry Wilson was healthy, the Cats weren’t exactly the wildest offense you were going to see. They were a run-heavy squad, and they should’ve been with the line they have. Three redshirt seniors up front mean that they’ll come in and try to budge the Auburn front seven. All the Tigers need to do is occupy linemen up front and let the best linebacking corps in the SEC roam and make plays. Britt, McClain, and Owen Pappoe should be able to track down any UK tailback, and the passing game shouldn’t be too much of a threat for an Auburn team breaking in a couple new secondary players.
STRESS-O-METER:
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I personally have no feeling on how much this game is going to make me sweat. I’m just excited to see us play again, but I know the first time we run the same play on three straight downs and punt I’ll turn to the dark liquor. There’s no doubt that this will be sloppy since neither team has had a full offseason of practice.
Seriously, though, Kentucky’s not a bad team. They didn’t really beat anyone of consequence last year, and Auburn won’t be caught unaware by their talent with this being the first game. It may just take a little bit longer than some of us like to get comfortable (and I’m defining comfortable as a lead with 0:00 on the clock).
Still, football is back. It’s back, y’all. War Eagle.
