IkeGen Sampler #4 - Tamamo
Tumblr media
Tamamo: “Don’t look at me, MC!”
I thought we’d try some Tamamo today - and this scene specifically is one of many that made me cry in his route. The whole thing is very bittersweet, and goes from high highs to low lows...I don’t rave about it enough but it’s a very solid, excellent story.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
(From Chapter 23)
When the men possessed by Yasuchika's clay dolls move to attack again, Tamamo freezes them all in place with a single heavy word, his kotodama. Yasuchika is agog, gaping at Tamamo's attempt to overwrite the possession with his own words of power - an ability that's new to MC as well, who looks on in shock.
Tumblr media
He commands the struggling men again, with another Word, to go back where they came from...and one by one, lumps of black mud begin emerge from the men's mouths and fall free. She wonders if that broke the spell, as Tamamo sags a bit, pale and clearly exhausted by the effort. Still though, he orders them once again, more forcefully - and the soldiers writhe but spit out more, until they seem to regain themselves.
Tamamo urges them to hurry and rejoin the others - then he turns to Yasuchika and draws his sword, the blade glowing blue as he strikes. Yasuchika is able to just barely bring his own sword out and up in time to block the attack, but the force of the hit sends Yasuchika flying backwards.
All the soldiers are gaping at the insane blow, as Tamamo tries to hustle them to run away. Yasuchika picks himself up off the ground, groaning, but with grudging admiration for Tamamo's strength. She can see that he's both struggling to breathe and bleeding heavily.
"Well, you have to be a little exhausted, don't you Tamamo?" Yasuchika asks. "Breaking that curse with your kotodama...especially when undoing curses is not your forte."
Aya realizes how difficult it must have been for Tamamo to force his powers to do the opposite of what they're used to, and how it's a testament to how hard he struggled to free his men.
"Enough talk. Yasuchika, I'm going to hand you over to Yoritomo personally," Tamamo promises.
To which Yasuchika says thanks but no thanks. He smears his own blood all over his hands and draws a complicated sigil, before slapping his palms on the ground.
Tumblr media
A mysterious purple glow springs up, sending gasps through all the people collected, and Tamamo grunts as the light coalesces into threads that wrap around and bind him tightly, forcing him to his knees. She yells his name as Yasuchika keeps building his spell, holding his bleeding side and screaming incantations, until Tamamo is bound helplessly, unable to so much as budge.
Tamamo seems startled to see this technique, and Yasu says he perfected it testing on Byakuran - and she realizes he IS the culprit behind Byakuran going mad all along. He admits it's a doozy though, he couldn't have done it without using his own blood, and she starts begging him to leave Tamamo alone, asking what he's trying to accomplish here. Yasu says honestly it's HER he's really interested in, the Kitsunetsuki Princess....what made HER so special??
And she's thinking...this guy is crazy. He is certifiable, and terrifying, as he stares at her malevolently.
From his place on the ground, Tamamo's telling her to run, glaring murderously at Yasuchika. Still struggling against his bindings and trying to stand. Yasuchika is impressed he can still move at all, but tells him if he stays quiet he won't touch MC - deal??
She's pissed about being used as a sort of hostage and calls Yasu a coward again, but Tamamo falls silent finally, biting his lip in frustration. Yasuchika begins rambling, musing on how Tamamo was able to be caught at all because he stayed to help all these people, going so far as to exhaust himself for their sake - when did he get to be such a softie??
"Shut up," Tamamo tells him furiously.
Tumblr media
"No matter how hard you try...you can never be human!" Yasuchika accuses.
She gasps and shouts at Yasuchika, because the soldiers don't know that Tamamo is an ayakashi...and all around her the men start murmuring in confusion, asking her what Yasuchika is talking about. She stumbles over trying to come up with some answer, but can't say anything that isn't a lie and she falls silent.
"It's just cruel to keep it from them," Yasuchika says. "All this time, they've been in the dark, blind to the fact that they had such a horrifying creature at their sides! Trusting their lives to one....risking their own lives for it."
Yasuchika's poisonous words keep flowing, and she interrupts him to shout that Tamamo is their friend.
"Friends??" he scoffs. "Isn't it about time that pathetic dream ended?" He takes out a fresh seal of paper and tosses it onto Tamamo. "Show them exactly how much of a beast you are, Tamamo!"
Tamamo's body begins to contort, as if enduring some great agony, setting him grunting with pain. She shouts at him to resist, and he gasps out her name. And then in a flash of light, his ears and tails appear. The soldiers all begin clamoring at once in fear, as MC tries telling them all to remain calm, when...
She's interrupted by Tamamo's sorrowful scream.
"Don't look at me, MC!"
Tumblr media
Power flares up around him in an inferno, his hair whipping in an invisible wind as he collapses to the ground. Fearsome claws grow from the tips of his fingers, as his hands and feet contort into inhuman angles, and she can only look on in disbelief.
A beast. He's transforming into a beast, she realizes.
The soldiers begin screaming in horror at the monster, at the deception, and Tamamo is wordless as foxfires begin to flare up uncontrollably around them all - just like Byakuran, she recognizes. He's lost control of his power entirely.
"...Run....Run away..." Tamamo tries to gasp.
The fires flare higher, threatening some of the soldiers, who scramble and scatter as fast as they can. Panic reigning supreme.
All she can think about is trying to help Tamamo, racing towards him as fast as she can. But her legs falter as she sees the eye that lifts to meet hers is slitted and animalistic, his name falling from her brokenly. She stares at that beastly gaze, blood from wounded soldiers all around as she trembles with fear - the hand she's been reaching towards him with stopping out of instinct.
Tamamo make a small wounded sound...and then darkness overtakes his eyes. And as if in response, the rest of his body transforms completely into that of a horrific beast. Before her stands a gigantic white fox, with a roar that could be either rage or suffering shaking the very air around them.
"Good, good. There you go, Tamamo," Yasuchika croons. "And just like I promised, I won't be the one to harm your friends. So let's start by having you destroy them all - shogunate and rebels alike."
She's standing there in just...a mute numb sort of horror, as Tamamo's massive forepaw slams into the ground, shaking it. Staring as it lifts again, coming closer....
When Shigehira appears, grabbing her by the arm and yanking her to safety, yelling at her for being a ninny and not running away
Tumblr media
"But... Tamamo..." she protests.
"Yeah, but what about you??" Shigehira retorts. He drags her up on his horse, her thoughts still a total muddle, and says they have to get out as fast as they can, it’s not safe here now.
And they gallop off...chased by the sorrowful howls of the great beast behind them.
The sky grows dark as they're riding back towards camp, her clinging to the saddle behind Shige in a daze. Running over the events that just happened in her mind. The look in Tamamo's eyes when he'd seen her fear, and how hard it still is for her to wrap her brain around the idea that that was Tamamo. And she's crying now, just clinging onto Shige's back as they ride. Blaming herself.
Thinking...that if only she'd been able to take his hand, maybe this wouldn't have happened.

IkeGen Sampler #1 - Kurama
Tumblr media
Kurama: “Are you afraid of me, human?"
I have a ton of Ikemen Genjiden translations sitting around (accuracy not guaranteed, as always) and I thought that just for fun I'd try posting some of my random favorite scenes from various routes. This will be the first in an occasional series, maybe? If you guys are truly interested in anyone or any more, let me know and I'll see what I can do! For now, we'll kick it off with my problematic favorite, Kurama.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(From Chapter 20)
"You there...what are you doing?"
The air is suddenly so tense she can't even breathe, the men's leers frozen as they all turn in the direction of the unknown voice in unison... And she's thinking no, no way, this can't be real...
"Did you touch that woman?" Kurama falls from the sky, his wings spread wide as if to embody the fury emanating from his frame, the enemy soldiers completely stunned.
Tumblr media
All she can wonder is...what is he doing here?? She doesn't even have time to ponder the answer, when she feels tears well up and fall from her eyes.
He’s silent at the sight before he bites out an order for her to wait, spreading his fan open, and the wind shrieks around all the men at once.
Tumblr media
Kurama looking on coolly as they all begin to scream, the invisible blades slicing into them. They back away from her, shouting, scrambling for their swords.
One man tries to threaten MC to get Kurama to back down - making it halfway through his words before Kurama's eyes meet his and his sentence shears off. Silenced by a single blade of wind slashing his throat. He cuts down a second that tries to beg for his life, drawing his sword and dispatching him with just one blow, never even glancing at the man. A third tries to back away, but -
"Where are you going?" Kurama asks. He chases the man down with a few powerful beats of his wings, landing in front of him and cutting off his escape. "I'll send you straight to hell."
His ice-cold voice is the last thing the man hears.
Kurama looks out over the assembled men, covered with blood, and grins - saying that today is a good day, because he can vent his fury to his heart's content. MC's thinking in horror how ruthless that is...and the remaining men all freeze with terror, basically pissing themselves.
"M-monster!" accuses one.
Kurama agrees that he's right. "And your blood is the only sacrifice that's going to appease me."
His wings are soaked with it, so much so they almost shine, and it's the most unholy terrifying thing she's ever seen as he tells them he won't be leaving a single one of them alive now that they've seen the real him. His blade flashes, laying into them all, and she realizes he's dead serious - he means to kill every last one of them. She's half-dazed with exhaustion and everything else, as she staggers to her feet and croaks out for him to wait.
He stops immediately at the sound of her voice.
Tumblr media
"Don't...kill them..." She doesn't even know why that request popped out, so nervous and exhausted she can't even think properly, and Kurama studies her in silence for a moment...before he turns her down flat.
He leaps into the sky, landing behind the next man - taking flight again before the man has even finished hitting the ground to fly on to his next victim...and she knows what she's witnessing is nothing more than wholesale slaughter. The soldiers not standing even the ghost of a chance against him.
Gore covers the ground, already congealing in a nightmarish sight as she tries to think - what should she do? What can she say to him? She approaches him slowly, and is struck by the very real thought that she might be killed too.
Nothing burns in his scarlet eyes but the exultant flames of slaughter.
"You're shaking," Kurama notes.
"I..." is all she gets out.
His blood-coated fingers reach towards her, touching cheeks that feel frozen into a mask. "With these hands, I slaughtered your kind. Like crushing insects, without hesitation or mercy. Are you afraid of me, human?"
Tumblr media
Her hands and feet feel numb with tension, as she prays not to give him the wrong answer. Knowing he will detect even a hint of a lie. "...I am afraid," she admits. She can hear him draw a short, sharp breath at her quivering answer. "But...thank you for helping me."
"You..." His voice sounds confused, his words cutting off abruptly as if afraid she might hear how it shakes, before he goes on. "Your cheeks are warm."
It sounds as if he's saying it aloud simply to reassure himself.
"You're alive," he finishes.
Tumblr media
She agrees, her chest aching at the overwhelming relief in his tone. Wondering why he acts this way, when he swore to kill her himself someday.

IkeGen Sampler #3 - Benkei
Tumblr media
Benkei:  “I don't think that’s a very convincing argument, coming from the woman who just fell down a cliff.”
For you, Benkei Anon, who wanted to see the big man in action a bit. I hope this fits the bill! Background: MC is with Tamamo, Shigehira, and Morinaga following up on rumors that something oogie boogie is skulking around the mountains. Standard amateur disclaimer applies <3
-----------------------------------------------------------
(From Chapters 3 and 4)
They all comment on the unusually thick fog, and how it will make it difficult to find this rogue ayakashi.
“That’s why it’s here,” Tamamo says soberly. “It’s easy to hide.”
“Is that so…” Turning his words over in her mind, she presses forward, and that’s when she feels it - her ankles suddenly wrapped in something soft. When she drops her gaze to see what she’s snagged on, a ferocious force yanks on her leg and she’s dragged towards the cliff edge as she screams.
“MC!?” Morinaga shouts - but no sooner does she hear his voice, than the ground drops away beneath her.
Tumblr media
There’s the sensation of floating, of falling, and then a great impact as she crashes on her back in a relatively soft landing atop some bushes. Cracking her eyes open, she hisses in pain, but breathes a sigh of relief. “Oh thank goodness...I thought I was going to die…”
But she’s separated from everyone else now, and lost, and her leg twinges with pain. Gingerly she pushes herself upright, surveying her surroundings. The fog is still thick here, but she notices it undulates strangely...despite the lack of wind.
That can’t be...she thinks. But at the edges of her sight she can see a face in the fog, and a gap eerily like a grin opens up in the mist.
That’s the ayakashi?! She realizes it had dragged her over the cliff, and she’s suddenly terrified at the prospect of facing this thing alone, trying to drain its magic all by herself. She turns to face it when suddenly -
“Oiiii - who’s there?”
A dark outline gradually takes shape through the fog, becoming clearer, until -
“Benkei?” she gasps.
“Whaaa…” Benkei gapes back at her. He says he heard the sound of someone screaming and came to check, and he asks what she’s doing there.
Tumblr media
“That’s my line,” she says. “What are you doing here?” Then she recalls the conversation between Shigehira and Kagetoki that first morning at the castle, where they had discussed whether Yoshitsune was involved in the ayakashi mess.
Does this prove that Benkei and Yoshitsune really do have some kind of hand in this? As she bites back the urge to blurt out that question, Benkei strides over to her and lifts his naginata at the ready.
“...Benkei?” she says nervously.
“Stay right where you are!”
Tumblr media
She shrieks, as the blade jabs over her head. The fog seems to disperse slightly - and the air is broken by a high pitched sound, like a wail.
“C’mere!” Benkei barks, and she’s startled when he grabs her wrist and pulls her down from the bush she was still tangled in, to find her footing on the ground.
She asks what he just did and he explains - slashed the ayakashi, but his attack didn't seem to do any real lasting damage no matter how many times his strikes hit.
Now she’s definitely confused - a moment ago she thought Benkei was somehow responsible for the ayakashi, but now he seems to have been fighting it. Her thoughts are soon interrupted though when Benkei calls out that the ayakashi seems to be coming back again
She cries out, as a tendril of fog takes the shape of an arm and swipes at her. She flinches, not expecting to be able to avoid it...when a flurry of strikes from the naginata fills her vision. A horrible shrieking deafens her, and seems to move off, but she can still see a shadow lingering nearby.
“I thought so. It’s after you,” Benkei says, theorizing that it somehow knows she can absorb its powers and knows she’s the true danger.
“Well...it’s clearly not smart enough to just run away.” Having finished observing the situation, Benkei seems to come to some decision and grasps his naginata again. “...Alright. You’re up.”
“What…me?!” she echoes, gobsmacked.
“I’ll buy you time. You absorb that thing,” Benkei explains.
“Wait, wait, I can’t do by myself!” she protests. Actually, she isn’t opposed to working together, but she knows she’ll only get in Benkei’s way...and truth be told, she’s also scared witless.
Benkei’s brows arch in surprise, and he bends close to peer at her face. “Hey, who said do it alone?” At her confusion, he lifts his weapon in one hand and holds her gaze steadily. “I told you. I’d buy you time, but more than that - I won’t let it lay a single finger on you!”
Tumblr media
The absolute sincerity in his gaze quiets the worst of her fear. Benkei is ready to protect her...but why? They’re enemies, aren’t they? They don’t know each other.
But the confidence in his eyes and voice seems almost infectious.
“So? Yes or no?” he presses.
“...Got it. Let’s do this!” she agrees.
“Alright, good answer,” Benkei says with a grin.
Tumblr media
They turn around to face the ayakashi again, and the moment Benkei readies his naginata again it howls threateningly, only to have it taunted in return by Benkei. “Bring it on!”
A thick tendril of fog reaches for her again, and with a shout Benkei launches a flurry of attacks, severing the fog over and over in a single breath, leaving her absolutely stunned at how fast and lightly he can handle such a huge weapon. Each time the blade flashes out again, the silhouette of the foggy form seems to shrink a bit more.
And then the fog seems to change tactics, lashing out to wrap a part of itself around Benkei’s left hand.
She has a moment to be alarmed - before Benkei’s mouth curves up in a dauntless grin. “Keeping it exciting, thinking like that...but if you think you’ve blocked me, you’re wrong.”
His left arm still trapped in fog, Benkei bends down, wraps his hands around a fallen log, and - to her absolute disbelief - heaves the whole thing on a shout at the ayakashi. It crashes into the spirit, scattering the fog into disarray.
I can’t - how strong is this person?!?! she wonders, boggled.
“Now, now!” Benkei yells at her, and his voice seems to propel her forward. She approaches the sluggish, stunned ayakashi and holds out her hands, begging the powers that be to let this work - and then light and heat rise into her skin, and the ayakashi is gone.
Not only that, but the fog seems to have disappeared along with it entirely as well.
She heaves a sigh of relief that threatens to sag her knees, and then hears a voice behind her. “Well...you did it.”
“Only because you bought me time. It’s all thanks to you slowing it down,” she defers.
The grin falls from his face, and for some reason Benkei seems to just stare at her honest remark.
Tumblr media
Until she finally asks him what is wrong and he waves it off. “Nah, it’s nothing. You did well.”
Is it because they worked together? she wonders. The way he praised her just now made her feel...strangely happy. She shakes herself, and reminds herself that this person is one of Yoritomo’s enemies.
And then they both startle, as they feel the first patters of rain. Benkei muses that the fog must have kept the weather a bit at bay, then - “Oi. Come here.” She blinks, and he tells her not to worry, he’ll explain in a sec. “You’ll get wet standing around here.”
And before she can blink, he’s scooped her up into his arms and arranges her on his shoulder as she shrieks with surprise.
So freaking high! she thinks. “Put me down!”
But he tells her he’s just carrying her to a nearby cave to get out of the rain and stay dry. “Quit thrashing. Do you want to fall?” He draws her attention to the ground, where rivulets have already formed and made the muddy riverbank treacherous. “If you walk by yourself, you’re likely to fall in the river. So just be quiet and hold still.”
“I’m not going to fall,” she protests.
“I don't think that’s a very convincing argument, coming from the woman who just fell down a cliff,” Bekei retorts with a smirk.
Tumblr media
“That’s because I was dragged down,” she corrects him.
“Sure, sure,” Benkei just replies.
She’s still not satisfied, but she’s content to pick her battles and knows she couldn’t escape from his strong arms - although he’s holding her surprisingly gently. Lifting her head to look over, she can see Benkei’s striking profile.
He helped her once before, too...She can’t bring herself to believe that he’s a bad person. But nevertheless, they are enemies right now. Helping her doesn’t seem to be of any benefit to him anymore. So what exactly is this person thinking?

IkeGen Sampler #2 - Kagetoki
Tumblr media
Kagetoki: "You said you wanted to get to know me."
Continuing the Kagetoki theme today, here’s a bit from his route where he finally agrees to let her see who he is and just what he does - the good, the bad, and the ugly, if she can accept it. For background, our characters have found themselves in a very ‘Seven Samurai’ sort of setting, where they come across a village and find it overrun and occupied by thuggish mercenaries hired secretly by nobles at the Imperial Court to undermine the shogunate. After the death of his closest vassal at their hands, Kagetoki and MC decide to do what they can to liberate the village and do away with a threat to the shogunate.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(From Chapter 11)
As Kagetoki and the others prepare for battle in the mountains outside Kyoto…
Back at the Imperial Court, as twilight falls over the city, three aristocrats have their heads together secretively.
"I've had a bit of news of interest," one says to his companions. "It would seem that a vassal of Kajiwara Kagetoki was killed by soldiers occupying a certain village."
Tumblr media
The others startle, as the nobleman goes on to say he'd heard that Kagetoki was forming a force to defeat them after receiving instructions from the shogun.
"This is bad, isn't it?" a second frets.
"Yes," the third agrees. "If it were to come to light that we were involved in gathering these fighters…"
The first tells them both to calm down, reminding them that Kagetoki had been in Kyoto personally the past couple of days and that there had been nothing to tie them to the situation.
"But Kagetoki is said to be far more clever than any average samurai…" the third still worries.
"Just in case, all evidence has been destroyed," the first assures him. "Even if we are suspected, there's nothing concrete to finger us."
"Ah, yes. That's true." The second nods and smiles, and the others do likewise.
"I'll send a message and hasten the soldiers to make themselves scarce," the first tells them.
"Won't that expose us? Kagetoki keeps men watching all around the village," the second points out.
"What are you saying? There's no possible way he can watch every path into that village with only the handful of men he has," the first scoffs.
And like ripples on water, the three men's sly laughter fills the air.
------
As night falls in earnest…
"Indeed. I can't watch every road into the mountains," Kagetoki muses aloud. "But an idea had occurred to me."
Tumblr media
"Let me go, you lowlife!" A noblemen's messenger struggles as he's detained by Kagetoki.
MC is watching in astonishment - only a short while ago Kagetoki had intercepted the messenger just before he slipped into the village under cover of darkness, and had sent his men into motion, asking only MC to stay.
"But...how did you find him?" she wonders, baffled.
Kagetoki explains how he purposely let false information slip, realizing that a certain number of court officials were involved with the soldiers and this helped him narrow down those responsible
The messenger gapes at him in disbelief over how they had been duped.
"Yes. It was only a matter of sitting back and waiting for the panicked guilty parties to make their move," Kagetoki elaborates. "There are three we've successfully identified. I didn't have to watch every road through the mountains...I merely needed to watch the gates of their three manors."
"Still...you were able to pick up on them moving to destroy evidence…" MC points out.
"I have eyes and ears in Kyoto as well. The Imperial Court is nigh on pitch black," Kagetoki tells her.
The whole thing is still vaguely unsettling, even knowing Kagetoki is on their side...as if he can almost predict the future or something.
"Th-this is unforgivable!" the messenger cries. "Unhand me, at once! Don't think that you and that woman will ever be able to get away with this!"
"I'm not concerned about that." Silently, Kagetoki walks over towards the messenger.
"A-are you going to kill me?" the man stammers.
"Yes."
Kagetoki's sword flashes out and slits the man's throat, as she looks on in wide-eyed shock. Time seems to slow down as the man crumples to the ground, dead before he even had a chance to cry out.
Tumblr media
Perhaps he himself was never even aware of what happened.
Kagetoki had killed him though...and the lurid sheen of blood makes her feel faint.
It's Kagetoki's gaze, turning quietly to hers, that finally grounds her. "You said you wanted to get to know me."
Tumblr media
"I...yes…" she manages.
"As long as that remains your wish, you will bear witness to death."
She realizes then, instinctively, in a way that steals her breath - he pressed for her to see this.
Kagetoki continues. "If kept alive, he would have fed information back to the court nobles. That is why I killed him. Without hesitation. That's the sort of person I am."
There's no question that he means every word of it, she knows.
"I…" She plants her cold feet firmly, to steady her woozy self.
"MC. You mentioned priorities, when you begged for the lives of the villagers."
"Yes. I did say that," she acknowledges, recalling those words.
"On the field of battle, a life holds little weight. We share similar priorities. However, mine are inflexible,” he tells her.
What are the things that matter to Kagetoki? In comparison to her fledgling, new-found resolve, she knows that his is hardened and cold. Like forged, tempered steel. "Can you tell me? What those priorities of yours are?" she manages to ask.
"For me, as of this moment - the most important person here is you."
"Me??" she echoes, surprised.
"First is you, the ‘trump card’ of the shogunate. Next come the vassals as the strength of the shogunate, and then the villagers who are ancillary. And last, least of all, are the enemies deserving of death," he elaborates. "If you are in danger, I will not hesitate to leave even our allies to twist in the wind. Remember that."
She understands - this is not a threat. It's a warning, advice before they enter battle. This here is the line she can no longer turn back from, once crossed.
And Kagetoki had killed that man right in front of her to convey that.
"So I'll ask you, once again. One last time. Are you certain you wish to come with me, MC?" he presses.
She's silent long moments, biting her lips. Knees trembling at the sight of the dead messenger before her.
I'm sorry.
She swallows those words down, just before spoken to a dead man. It's not the time to apologize... because she's already made her decision. The only thing she can do is pray he sleeps peacefully now.
But she recognizes even that is a selfish wish to make only herself feel better, and that realization twists bitterly in her heart.
Still, she turns to face Kagetoki squarely. "Thank you for respecting me as a person capable of making their own decisions, Kagetoki. I'm going. Please allow me to fight alongside you."
He looks at her in surprise.
Tumblr media
Her feelings aren't entirely settled on this matter, but she is prepared. For Kagetoki, and everyone else.
"Very well. You have certainly conveyed your determination. If you keep your every involvement with this to yourself, I promise to put you to good use and not squander your presence in my plans." His voice is as quiet as his eyes are sharp.
"I look forward to working with you," she says politely.
"Well, here we are. When I first met you, I never would have thought that things would end up like this between us," Kagetoki concedes. His tone is softer than she would have expected, and for some reason it squeezes her heart.
"Now then." He bends down and searches the messenger, coming up with a letter written by the noblemen. "Let us begin an intrigue."
