Love Lies Here Bleeding
Nestled into his side, my only love on the left
I breathe in his aftershave and think to myself,
That perhaps if he had done this years ago, sober, we wouldn't be so torn today
He tells that he's proud
We're not fags, asses, bitches, dumb fucks.
He says he's sorry he yells at us
He loves us very much, he doesn't want to hurt us
He loves us so much
He wants to make us tougher
So he bullies us
He said he's sorry for when he's abusive with his words
He loves us so much
He's just preparing us for the real world
It's harsh
He wants us to be able to face it
He says he wouldn't hit us, he doesn't want to have to hit us to get his message across,
Because that would hurt
He yells so he doesn't have to hit us
Because he loves us.
He gets misty eyed for love of his father.
He tells us we need to be toughened, because unlike him, we weren't beat on as kids.
He got into fights because his parents fought, he beat because he was beaten
My grandparents, he says, made him this way
He casually tells a story of being choked against the wall by his father as my Grandma threatened him over his report card
Of course he is drunk
Laughter and tears, slurs and promises flow freely
He gestures wildly and I sigh once again
If only years ago, if only sober
I wouldn't be so uncomfortable with the hand resting at my hip, the shoulder supporting my head, the slightest movement of his large hands
He says he loves us
As I excuse myself, nothing feels certain but two things
Someone is lying to me, and his love slanders the word's meaning.
