Dungeon Appreciation Post #5 - Inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly (TLoZ: Ocarina of Time)

Like the Great Deku Tree, I always appreciated Lord Jabu-Jabu's Belly for having a form that matched the concept of the dungeon itself, in a way that the later-game temples miss by just being large buildings (though who doesn't love an unexplained mysterious tomb?). Even Dodongo's Cavern doesn't quite have this quality, since the nature of a cave dungeon is that it can easily be any shape.

However, with this one the dungeon map is so clearly a giant fish with a midsection, two major wings for the pectoral fins, and a fanning tail, and I love that! I think I was presented with this concept twice in this time period, where one was that episode of The Magic School Bus where they go inside Arnold's body, and this was the version of it that the fantasy adventure game I was playing presented me with.

You enter from the mouth, so the entrance is inside the head. Right away you're shown a shot of Link entering with the teeth behind him framing the shot to sell the effect, and upon entering you're greeted by a view of a narrow passage which essentially serves as an esophagus, which you open by shooting at a switch that resembles a uvula. There are bouncing bubbles which make this atrium appropriately grosser. Everything here is biologically themed, from the valve doors, to the pulsating switches and climbable walls that look like some sort of muscle tissues, as well as the parasitic enemies you find.

You're also ambushed by two Octoroks in the entrance, and later on we see a number of jellyfish that can shock you, and flying manta rays. It makes sense that Jabu-Jabu would swallow smaller sea creatures, so having the enemies be largely ocean based is a smart way to have a "water dungeon" without it being a "water dungeon", and this game really didn't need two. There is some swimming here, but most of the water is constrained to the lower levels, and gives the impression of reservoirs of stomach fluid.

You're forced in-game to escort Princess Ruto through the dungeon, who early on falls in a sinkhole to the lowest levels. Forcing the player to chase her is how the game emulates the impression of being swallowed, except you get to travel the straightest path down to the stomach yourself, then climb back up, instead of being swallowed in a cutscene or something. They pull the same trick again when it seems Ruto find the Spiritual Stone, and both her and the stone are shunted deeper into the dungeon without you.

Climbing up is made more arduous by Ruto's presence, and while players have long joked about her being annoying (escort quests are broadly unpopular), I think It effectively slows down the escape, and a design that fights to keep you down inside is a good one for a whale that swallows you whole.

The treasure of the dungeon is the Boomerang, which is a bit arbitrary and not particularly themed, but its use here is to throw and sever parasitic tentacles from the ceiling in multiple rooms towards the tail end, a trick you use again against the dungeon boss Barinade. Barinade marries the biological/parasitic and marine themes of the dungeon being the largest, beefiest parasite present with multiple anchor points to sever, which give the impression of siphoning Jabu-Jabu's life, while also being covered in giant jellyfish that act as adds. They actually seem to be themselves parasitizing Barinade, feeding off it's bioelectric energy. Barinade itself also looks like some monstrous heart, which is pretty cool.

Ocarina of Time's two "Inside" dungeons Inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly and Inside the Great Deku Tree are two of my favourites from a theming standpoint, and both happen to involve an attempt to save a great creature from the inside from cursed parasitic monstrosities. I think it's nice that you get a chance to succeed the second time after being doomed the first, which makes for a mini narrative arc I've not heard anyone mention before.

Got to sit down and rewatch the new BaPC eps while more awake last night. Still haven't watched the rest of it in order yet - the order of the leaked eps was apparently wrong so I want to see how it flows on Netflix. I figured I might as well jot down my thoughts while they're fresh, though. As expected, this will be full of spoilers!

This isn't going to be an overwhelmingly negative series of thoughts because I just don't have it in me. I understand why a lot of people feel the way they do, but like I've stated before, I understand Netflix is garbage and even worse to animation, so there's a lot of things (like episode limit, season limits) that I think are beyond the team. I don't see a point in wonder why they couldn't just upload the first season as well - which I'll get into - when I know Netflix is stingy on seasons and episode counts (I believe it's after season 3 that Netflix has to increase pay for originals and I imagine there's a similar concept for shows they host).

Ultimately, though, I think a big thing is that somewhere along the lines, either the story Natasha set out to tell changed, or maybe it just grew; or maybe in the process of telling the story, there were elements she wanted to alter, in order to better tell it. Mote foreshadowing, more lore, a different tone. The OG BaPC works excellently as a standalone series, and if Netflix had ordered TWO seasons instead of one with 3 extra eps to condense the first season + pilot, I'm sure we could have retained a lot of things fans loved - but Netflix didn't.

I'm ALWAYS going to love the OG series - the tone is different, the story is clearly different from what it's evolved into, it FEELS different. That stride of Bee's birthday and the jellyfish story and everything from Deckard taking Bee to show her his plants and ending up on Donut Planet just GETS to me emotionally and it's so beautifully done, and maybe had Netflix ordered it as a separate season we might have been able to retain a lot of that heart and soul. But also...

Something I noticed about the new episodes, and illuminated it in the Lazy in Space eps, is that they really have played into how Bee feels and expresses emotions. Deckard asking if Bee will miss him if he leaves the island is a direct parallel to the flashback of Crispin moving out of Bee's place, asking if she's even sad. In response to Deckard, Bee sounds almost insincere, like she's laughing at a joke, and to Crispin she reveals her little Bee guts in conflict.

Even though they knew in OG BaPC that she was a robot, I think by the time they were working on Lazy in Space they changed their mind on how Bee operates. Her issue with water and the ocean vs the straight up avoidance of water altogether. The way she expresses emotions and her tones. The sentimental expression of emotional conflict as she found herself enjoying her birthday for once is completely removed. I think if this was still an integral aspect of Bee, they would have found a way to maintain it in the new episodes, because ultimately what DOES remain is all stuff pertinent to various characters - a whole flashback of Cas and Toast's history, how Cardamon found Sticky, getting more insight in Deckard and Cas's relationship. I assume by removing things like Bee's conflicted emotions, we are leaning more into Bee as a robot who doesn't react exactly as a human.

That said, there's obviously a lot about Bee that IS very human - whether it's how she was made or what she picked up from being around others. A change I like a lot is how Bee encouraged Deckard to go to culinary school - how Cas didn't fill out the acceptance for him, it was his choice that he tried to back out of, and that Donut Planet and Bee ultimately encouraged him. We get to see a little more of his internal conflict, in how he WANTS to go but he's scared of leaving and scared of tackling something he's no good at. I think that's a big reason that he does better on Donut Planet than at culinary school: even though he chose to go, there's still a lot of reluctance (and depression) and maybe something to do with a lack of encouragement? At any rate, I love Deckard having the agency of choice, but I also REALLY love Bee encouraging him, because she knows he's scared and selling himself short. It's such a tender, human experience, to encourage those you care about, to do your part to make it easier for them (offering to look after his family for her).

Basically, I look at OG BaPC and the new eps + Lazy in Space as two different entities, because it's clear to me the story being told was changed at some point (Bee and Deckard's entire romance being completely erased, a lot of sentimentality downplayed, Bee's age HEAVILY played into, a link between Bee and Cardamon more heavily teased). I'd love to hear a BTS from Natasha about how they rewrote the story - things that were removed due to time, things that were changed because the story changed, how the story may have evolved over the last ten years - because it would be so fascinating to see how the story has grown. In terms of story, though, Lazy in Space was a departure from OG BaPC, so even if uploading the first season had ever been an option, I get why they didn't go that route. Artstyle aside, casual watchers would probably find that disconnect jarring - the sudden changes in things like Bee's line delivery, the whole lol erased romance plot, all of the fascinating lore the new episodes introduce that better link to Lazy in Space were not present.

There are some details I think were probably always present: I bet Bee's dad was always intended to be affiliated with Puppycat and Violet (it's no coincidence that Bee and Violet live in the same complex, on an island that is a spaceship); Bee was probably always meant to be pretty old; the island was always a spaceship.

Anyway like I said, I understand why there are people upset about the departure from OG BaPC. I think Lazy in Space made a lot of that change, too, so the story had to adjust to those changes, and the slice of life on the surface genre that many had come to love no longer suited the story being told. So to me, they are two different stories with the Netflix version being the one they chose to pursue. Rather than tell people to watch the OG series on YouTube and start from ep 4 on Netflix, though, I think it would be better if people just watched the OG after they complete the Netflix version. OG BaPC sets a whole different tone and doesn't have a lot of the lore that the new episodes offer. OG BaPC as a treat is probably the better way to go about it.

Ultimately, I love them both! I love Bee and I love getting new lore to mull over, new pieces to the puzzle. Bee's dad -- IN the Dad box?! The Dad Box a portal to him..?! -- threw me for LOOP! Acknowledging the candy Bee eats is the same that Puppycat and Violet used to collect? She and Cardamon used to share it?! (Oh my GOD Cardamon doesn't eat does he?! He buys all that junk food FOR VIOLET "It's not for me" because he doesn't NEED to eat?!) There's just so MUCH good, new stuff to think on and I'd hate to throw that all out the window, yknow?

oooh fun tag game @swirlingflight did and i want to do too

Rules: name your favourite movie, character, animal, drink, song, season, book, colour and hobby.

Movie: Pacific Rim first and foremost because that shit rewired my brain on a fundamental level. still holds up years later. too bad they never made a sequel, it would have been cool to see how they could have further developed the incredible world-building the first movie teases at (AHEM) the second answer is sofia coppola's marie antoinette cuz it fully lives in my brain rent free even now, 17 years later. that movie is my EVERYTHING.

Character: right at this moment it's a tie between izzy and astarion and no we're not going to be discussing any parallels moving on

Animal: jellyfish!! but really all sea creatures, especially the tentacled ones. they're all absolute freaks in the best ways.

Drink: generally tea (i think my blood is more tea than water by volume at this point) but especially boba tea but only if it's good, i'm outrageously picky about my boba tea

Song: ooof this is impossible. groove is in the heart is the one that feels most like "me" like if i were a wrestler that would be my walk on music, but there's SO many songs that i love it feels cruel to pick favorites. anything by queen, rhiannon by fleetwood mac, flamingo by kero kero bonito, blinding by florence but also every other song by florence, and lately francesca & first time by hozier and like a million more besides.

Season: summer because that's my birthday, but close second is fall cuz halloween and pumpkin spice and the best seasonal treats

Book: sooooo many but the arden st. ives series by alexis hall was the one where it did so many things i've wanted to read in stories for forever and it got its hooks in me so deep i immediately re-read the whole thing after i had finished. i think i've re-read it like four? or five times? at this point?? i want to print those books out and eat them page by page.

Colour: minty green!! the color of baja blast and pacific oceans and everything good and bright and happy and lovely in the world.

Hobby: i'm gonna take swirl's answer for this and say creating too :P most often writing but just as much painting or drawing (badly) or caligraphy-ing and a billion other various crafts and such

Best known for her temper, she's almost always on the edge of going off and flaming out.

She has her own lil ghosts like her dad that her rep of Sadness, Joy, and Rage. Rage is Pseudo leader of the ghosties trio.

She genuinely tries to be nice but like death and being the child of a vengeful ghost can mess up anybody.

Lilly really loves music! Her song is definitely Money by Mystery Skulls.

Her legs and arms are transparent since she's a ghost and do flare up with her when she gets mad.

She can't speak. Lacking a bottom jaw does that to you.

Lilly isn't looking for romance right now. She's got to work on her temper first. But maybe she'll find someone with her blue heart.

Ocean Idiots Adopt A Child I Guess

Delta wasn't certain what she was staring at. It was a squirmy human thing with a large squishy plume on it's head. The plume had what she assumed was an eye in it. It certainly looked like an eye. A big fiery one. The thing's face was hidden by strange pink and blue strands of twisting hair that circled around it's head.

She gestured to the thing "Mariza what is this?" She asked.

Mariza smiled as she held the thing in her watery tendrils "It's a mer child, a jellyfish one. I've only heard about them but look at him... her... Them!" The god mumbled, they shifted the child a bit.

"Did you even check?" Delta asked. Her girlfriend was wonderful but also very, very impulsive at times. It was cute when it wasn't child kidnapping.

Mariza nodded "Yeah, it just they uh- they didn't have anything. As far as I could tell it was stingers and oh do they sting," she remarked. The jellyfish child giggled. Little chubby and uncomfortably pale hands grasped at the air.

Delta held out her hands "Give me them, you're going to drop them like that," she said. The ocean god sighed by gladly handed them over. The trio went to a spot on the ship for a little more privacy.

The shark smiled "Okay, let's see what you're hiding under this mushroom hat," she teased. The child giggled again as she pushed their hair (?) Back. Her hand stung sharply. Delta jerked her hand away "Ah shit," she grumbled.

"Those might also be stinger bits," Mariza warned. The god closed her mouth from the glare the pirate sent her way. Delta shuffled over to a trunk and grabbed a glove. She pulled it on then went back to the child "Okay, take two."

When she managed to touch the stringers without being violently stung. Delta felt the blood drain from her face "Mariza," she said.

Mariza popped up by her side and winced. The child had big glassy eyes. They were looking at Delta but it was definitely in a way that didn't exactly see her. More like the general direction of her.

Mariza waved a tendril in their face "Hey kid, can you see that?" She asked.

The little one blinked "What?" They asked, half aware.

Delta dropped their tentacles and pulled her girlfriend away from the kid "They're blind," She whispered.

"I noticed."

"Mariza!"

The god made a vague gesture "What! You want me to toss them back into the ocean or something? They're a jellyfish, I'm more shocked they can even talk rather than them being blind," she replied.

The shark mer fell silent. Her eyes went back to the jellyfish sitting on the bed, idly kicking their legs all dapper in a makeshift outfit from an old sail cloth. An idea hit her.

She approached the child and crouched down again "Hey little one, do you think you can answer some questions for me?" She asked.

They nodded excitedly.

A smile crossed Delta's face, Mariza electing to join her "Okay, do you have a name? Something your family calls you?" She asked.

The child smiled, all goofy and all teeth "Papa called me Ab- am- aboination," they said, stumbling through the word.

That sharp cold feeling on the blood draining from Delta came back "Abomination?" She asked weakly.

The child nodded happily "Mhm, Mama called me Abe or Abbey," they replied.

Once again they went back to the corner. Delta gave Mariza a look "Where did you find them?" She asked.

After the whole mess of Ascension thing and relearning each other, Delta knew one thing. It took a lot for the New Mariza to be anxious. What she had asked made the god's eyes dart everywhere but at her.

"Mariza."

kjnskdfnj minghao was having a time <3 i cant remember if its in the first or second part, but he wanders away for a bit, and the editors cut to the empty space he was sitting in :P but he kinda learned the rules by the end!!! and good for him honestly, idk a damn thing about sports :] nice!!! i keep going back to rewatch the gose ep thats in the middle of caratland, its so funny lmao i hope ur able to watch it tomorrow! have a good weekend 💖💞💖💞

i do exactly the same thing with height! if you tell me your height in feet i have absolutely no idea how tall that is. if you say that in centimetres that's easy. i mean you're 155cm so that's 12cm shorter than me. when you told me that in feet i was like okay cool i have no idea how much shorter than actually is

i was definitely not the one you told about burma trails! but from the tags i'm just gonna say how is that allowed and why does it seem like a weird type of torture? i hate it, i probably would've had a heart attack 3 seconds in

oh yeah i actually can't tell most of the time if the memories from my childhood are actual memories or if it's just a combination of having seen photos and heard stories about it

my glasses prescription is fine i think. my eye doctor said that i get headaches from glasses because... well i tried to explain this and then deleted it all because it was a very scientific explanation when she said it and i zoned out pretty much halfway through and even the part that i did understand i can't translate to english! but it has something to do with the fact that with contacts it's enough to move my eyes in the direction i want to look at and with glasses i have to move my whole head and my brain got so used to contacts that it overdoes it with the eye movements when wearing glasses? i dunno. this is the best i can do in explaining it

i must admit i'm very jealous of the never snows part because while snow is pretty to look at it's absolutely freezing! for the past week i slept under a duvet, three blankets while wearing pants and a long sleeve shirt and i still woke up cold. because for a couple of nights it was around -22°C. it's great

ohhh you got pretty lucky as a kid then! my kid self would have absolutely lost it at getting the equivalent of 5/10 bucks. i probably would have bought so much candy

excellent!!! hope you’re enjoying the vague void from whence you came! i’ve never said whence before in my LIFE i wonder if i used it correctly. anyway. the actual recipe was way more specific but once i saw ‘2 frozen bananas’ and looked at all the sliced bananas in my fridge, having no idea how many there were, i just started improvising sdfkhsdfs. I’d be interested to try it with yoghurt though if I can get some dairy free plain stuff, I’m sure I can somewhere. Banana used to be my biggest problem when I was younger. Then I learnt words like occasion and necessary and embarrassed and I realised the more english I tried to learn, the worse my life was gonna get. And I was right. On the bright side, developing an inability to ever spell occasion correctly made banana seem a lot easier to handle.

yup! sometimes I’m like oh you’re 5 foot 4? that sounds way taller than me. but it...it really isn’t...it’s like an extra 8cm or something. which adds up! but in my head I was picturing a MUCH taller height. In my head I think I picture 6 foot and 5 foot 4 as the same height, now that I think about it.

!!!!! my first order as queen of birds is to meet a morepork face to face so we can chat about the price of pork these days. yes!! the first half was nice but the second half was really fun. my best guess is still that it’s a salp? Maybe? So many salp pictures are massive groups of them but like,, from what i can tell of singular photos,,, it was maybe that? I guess the only other possibility is it’s just some clear jellyfish but salp does seem more likely. At first I was like oh duuude boob implant for the ocean!! but then I realised it actually seemed kinda alive and was probably an actual creature. my bad.

I actually DON’T know the reason behind burma trails. I really don’t. The reason ‘it’s a fun activity!’ seems a little fake. if it’s a fun activity then why did Mrs. G. tell us a horror story about the forest before we went out to navigate said forest at night, blindfolded, surrounded by wildlife and parents supervising (*cough* waiting for the opportunity to jump out at you *cough*) with a teacher at the end waiting to scare us. So we can learn how to navigate the forest in the dark? So we learn how to follow a mysterious rope INTO the forest at night? seems dodgy to me. school camps be like [drives you out to forest] follow this rope and don’t take your blindfold off. like. bruh. i almost DID have a heart attack one time, I got stuck like something was holding my leg. First thought-ah, must’ve got my leg stuck in a big stick. Second thought-maybe this is one of the parents fucking around, it feels more like a grip than a twig. Third thought-I cannot get my leg free no matter what I do what the fuck is HAPPENING so I started crying out for help. When they FINALLY came they found nothing my leg was caught on so that was fun. love that for me. I was able to move as soon as they arrived. That’s not weird at all. anyway.

I think most of my early memories are just from stories I’ve been told and photos I’ve seen. My memory tends to be horrible I highly doubt I remember that one time I was eating dirt from the garden out in the yard gleefully. I just saw the photo evidence. mm spaghetti. bone apple teeth. my character hasn’t changed at all since I was a wee babe.

Although I have massive glasses so it’s probably easier for me to just move my eyes where I want. I reckon with smaller glasses I’d have to move my head way more.

the temperature comment is so funny because during the heart of winter i tend to sleep with a sheet, a blanket, a duvet, then 2-4 blankets on top while in a long sleeve shirt and long pants and sometimes bed socks and often a hottie (i’ve never realised how that sounds out of context...a hot water bottle...is calling it a hottie normal or is a my family thing? is this a nz thing? now i’m questioning myself). in my uni accommodation last year we didn’t have proper heating during most of winter and well. there was a quilt added to everything else. every blanket i could find. how cold does it get here in winter? rarely ever past 0 degrees celsius. I would literally die in your position, clearly. I could not survive that. Props to you for making it through aha.

yesss. Before when I found five dollar notes it’d be on the street and I’d be like oh no! Mum we have to hand this into the police station! It’s a lot of money, someone will be looking for it! Understandably she was like,, lindsey they might miss it but there’s not really any way you can find them,,, I still refused to spend it. That was like my first time really getting that much money for myself. The dairy on main street sold lollies for 10 cents each and they had like, 30 different lil glass boxes so you’d go I want 3 of 26, 5 of 7, ohhh and 5 of 13 please! I dunno if they’re still 10 cents each but I thought it was the best thing ever as a kid. I think I wanted to save the money though sfdjsdkfhs put it in my piggy bank to save up for something ‘super cool’. Aka probably like a neat soft toy to sleep with sdfsdkfs.
