Citrus' Art Summary 2023!

The year is almost over, so here's my art summary for 2023! I got this template from here. This is my third year in a row being able to populate every month with a finished(/digital) piece (and really, I did a LOT more than what's shown here!), so that feels like something to celebrate!

Technically some of these choices don’t match up with their post dates; I counted some months as “when I was primarily working on them” and some as “when I actually published them,” but the sentiment remains. Like I said, it was a busy year! :)

I remember last year I was quite worried about/was actually teetering on the edge of artistic burnout. There were definitely some months during this year that I felt a bit overwhelmed (particularly during the summer, when I was working on a 5-illustration series in a style that was DEFINITELY outside my norm, PLUS a bunch of other stuff), but I also appreciated the stylistic variety, and doing a lot of sketchbook drawings/marginalia that were(/are) just for me, so they never had to be "finished” or even "good." Even though almost everything pictured here is Digimon(/anime) art, I did experiment with a more "realistic" style for the Dracula Daily series (Aug/Sept), as well as trying to relearn the "Disney" style I started drawing in waaaaaaay back in high school, only now with a LOT more understanding of facial structure and anatomy. Largely, this style shake-up has been incredibly freeing (these are still sketchbook-only studies at this point, but I'm planning on some digital illustrations in the Disney style in 2024). I'm sure they still look pretty anime-influenced, and I'm not sure I'll ever truly be able to escape that, but honestly I don't mind; the anime aesthetic IS a part of my preference/style!

Let's see, the prevailing fandoms for what's shown here are Digimon Survive and Adventure 02. I really want to draw more Survive art next year!! Really happy with the collabo between @vidramon and myself (July), and honestly most (if not all) of these pieces. I worked hard, I branched out, I took on some really ambitious projects, and finished a ton of things (looking at you, March! That Knight drawing was a WIP for an entire year, but I finished it instead of abandoning it, which is what usually happens when things sit around that long!). Ultimately, I believe I told (and helped tell!) some great stories through my creative projects and art this year, which is my true goal forever and always.

Honestly I'm happiest with April's drawing. That one was a ton of fun to do, but I would have to work really hard to replicate that coloring style because I don't remember my brushes/settings, ahaha. Sadly this is how it usually goes with coloring for me; I make it up as I go almost every single time, which is why series are so difficult for me. I am nothing if not inconsistent -_-;

I would be remiss to mention that a huge part of my productivity this year was due to setting and tracking monthly goals for myself. I gotta thank everyone on the @campdigimonth server for their help in keeping me organized and motivated throughout the year! I plan on continuing my creative check-in posts in 2024.

Next year, I want to a) make more Survive art (particularly with Survive Week coming up), b) draw some more flippin' gargoyles (CRIIIINGE, but no, cringe is dead, I'mma do what I want!), and c) keep working on my personal project! And I am, once again, thinking about bookbinding. That's a "maybe" for next year as well!

1 Year Anniversary "Why Can't You See What You're Doin' To Me?"

According to my AO3, tomorrow, Sept 20, will mark 1 year since I posted chapter 1 of this WIP. Crazy how time flew. When I first started, I thought it was probably going to be a one shot or maybe only a few chapters at most, I never thought it would be 36 chapters and counting. It's been quite a journey to say the least. Before Elvis busted through my writer's block last year, I had little faith in myself that I could write a long story with an intricate, detailed plot since I had been dealing with a long bout of awful writer's block. But, here we are, 1 year later and I have proven to myself that I can in fact write more than just short one shots.

I'm so thankful for every single one of my readers, y'all are amazing and wonderful. I have appreciated and loved every single bit of feedback/interaction that has been sent my way either on AO3 or on here whether it was kudos, likes, reblogs, comments, all of it. Feedback is what keeps us writers going, especially on the hard days where we struggle with self doubt or imposter syndrome. So thank you, thank you very much. ❤ And my quiet readers who might be shy or nervous to interact please know that I appreciate you just as much. I have been a quiet, shy reader too in the past so I understand and that's why ALL of my readers mean the world to me.

I've also been the shy, quiet writer and recently was dragged out of my hermit shell kicking and screaming (kidding, well, only a little kidding haha) and encouraged to be more social on here by some of my fellow amazing and talented writers in this fandom and for that I am so grateful. So thank you especially to @thatbanditqueen, @peskybedtime, @shakerattlescroll, @ellie-24, @be-my-ally, @vintageshanny, @from-memphis-with-love, @whositmcwhatsit for inviting me to participate in writing prompt games and just over all encouragement, y'all are MVPs. Also kudos to @shakerattlescroll 's Canva skills since she made the WIP's cover art.

All that said, once I have finished this WIP, I want to know how much interest there is in more stories with Elvis and my OC Jane. I have already done one for a writing prompt game and I had a lot of fun with that so I would love to do more. I know a couple of my readers have expressed interest in more stories as well. So dear readers, tell me:

Thank you for the tag and for thinking about me. You all are wonderful and inspiring writers and your presence and works are to be admired.

Words written (published or not, WIPs included): I wrote 122.381 words this year! More than I wrote last year. I'm proud of myself for writing this much even if I lost my steam in the last months because life. Nevertheless, wow I wrote those words!!

Here's the recording. Mine is different cuz I add my daily word count in a sheet. This year, the data starting from Sept to Dec was lost. So I almost did a table flip. Until I remembered I ALSO use a writing bot to record my daily word counts so I re-added the lost word count in the sheet to get the total.....the things I do for fanfic 😂

Smut scenes:.......0. Gosh darn it. One of my goals this year was to write an entire smut scene but I failed. 2023 has to be the year!!! My Lavellan is waiting for me to start it 😂

New things I tried: I jumped into exchanges and I wrote pairings and characters I never wrote. I participated in art trades and OC exchanges. I submerged my tiny writer feet in lots of fandom stuff and it was fun! I can't wait to do it even more this year!

Fic I spent the most time on: Definitely Daughter of Fire/Herald of Spirit. I spent so so many hours writing the chapters, editing them and re-editing them. It was so much fun and I want to do it again this year! I feel more confident with my English skills and I kinda....don't care anymore if people like it or not. Life kicked my ass and writing must be my calm down hobby.

Fic I spent the least time on: I usually spend lots of time working on what I post because I'm like that. The things I wrote and was semi-relaxed with were my DADWC drabbles. I did work a lot of those too but not so much as on the other things.

Favourite thing I wrote: Daughter of Fire. It's my special project. But I did had lots of fun writing for the art exchanges! Writing about other OCs is fun!

Favourite thing I read: gods I read so so many fanfics this year. And over 20 books and manga. I can't pick! I'm grateful for every fic and book I read cuz it kept me sane. Thank you for writing them!

Writing goals for 2023:

1. Write that darned smut fic. Istg, if I don't get it done this year, I will flip two tables. 😂

2. Try to finish DoF. I think two years for a long fic are enough. I want to be more confident about publishing my long fic even if now I don't have a beta. Anyone feeling like beta-ing me? 😂

3. Participate in more exchanges and give more writing gifts. Because gifting people is fun and writing about other OCs is fun.

4. Reach 200.000 words in a year. Fingers crossed.

5. Have fun because that's the only thing that matters.
