How to Direct a Virtual Couples FaceTime Photoshoot in 4 Steps
I know the struggle right now is very real to try and find anything or anyone to photograph. We all have a creative itch we need to scratch, and there are so many photographers out there innovating and fighting to stay creative during this challenging time. I had booked an engagement session in snowy Lake Tahoe at the beginning of March… and then COVID-19 was officially announced as a global pandemic.
While FaceTime photoshoots are all the rage right now, I struggled with the idea that I would have to edit a JPEG/PNG screenshot and deliver that as a final image with my stamp of approval. I wanted to make it up to my clients by trying out an idea that I often use for my personal shoots: Bluetooth control of your smartphone with a remote trigger or smartwatch.
Virtual FaceTime Photoshoot: What You’ll Need
Smartphone: While this doesn’t have to be an Apple product, it’s what I used for this shoot and what worked for me. It works seamlessly if your client also has an Apple Watch.
Phone Tripod/selfie stick: You can make use of everyday items if this isn’t an option: I used an ironing board and coasters to help stabilize the phone for most of the shots. if your client doesn’t have one of these lying around, you can ship it to them as a gift or encourage them to buy one for future use. Everyone needs a self-portrait at some point in their life.
Bluetooth trigger: this can be an Apple Watch, a cheap $8 remote trigger on Amazon, Bluetooth remote selfie stick (this is what I used) or the lowest budget option: 10-second timer. Obviously, the latter will make the shoot a bit more stressful for both you and your client so I would look into the other options.
Laptop: You’ll either need to Zoom or FaceTime your client(s) in order to see the scene, give them posing guidance, and see the placement/angle of the phone before taking the shot.
How to Direct a Virtual FaceTime Photoshoot
While every photographer has a different method in how they elicit genuine emotion from their clients, directing from behind a screen when you can’t physically be there to change an awkward pose or make a sudden joke can really throw you off your game. I opted to do a stay-at-home session to give my clients photo documentation of what it was like during this time in our lives. To better illustrate my point, watch a quick snippet from my session:

Here are my 4 steps to getting authentic photos by being a couch director through FaceTime:
1. Scan the Scene: Find Every Possible Angle
As soon as you hop on FaceTime/Zoom with your client, have them give you an apartment/house tour to get the lay of the land. Just like you would do on an in-person session, start planning out scenes in your mind that will make a cohesive story. There is a whole world of options that open up to you since a smartphone is so small and can be crammed pretty much anywhere. Figure out what your primary light sources are and start shaping your scenes around that. Start thinking about what you could use as foreground objects, clean up your backgrounds – get creative!
Since I was working with a smaller layout in a studio apartment, I had to think outside (or technically inside for this shot) the box to figure out angles that would get me wide enough without having to crop too much. I recently shot an image by putting my phone in my fridge to get a different perspective of the scene and wanted to try that out here to try and incorporate depth, foreground elements, and storytelling.
2. Think in Multiple Angles: Wide, Medium, Tight
Something I learned from Pye was that most shows/movies operate under the storytelling framework of shooting a wide angle to set the context before moving in closer to see the characters and then getting in tight to focus on emotion. This is something that has forever changed the way that I photograph in any location, giving me a simple way to set up a series for documentation. Think about keeping the story going, constantly, in order for the images to speak without captions. With newer smartphones, you even have the ability to shoot wide-angle and portrait.
3. Choose Simple Poses
The focus in virtual photoshoots should shift from creating dynamic show-stopping imagery to photojournalism. The more action-related poses you choose, the blurrier your images may be depending on how much light you have available. Decide on an angle first and then pick an action that best suits that scene. For most of this shoot, the subjects were either sitting or standing. There is often beauty in simplicity. My favorite shot from the entire shoot ended up being the one above because of how ordinary of a moment it was. Make sure you keep in mind that if you are using a remote, try to hide it from the camera’s perspective so you don’t have to clone it out later.
4. Get Both Portrait & Landscape Shots
1/2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The session will have more of a variety if you switch the orientation of the phone to get both portrait and landscape shots. Use this to drive your compositions and think about using a vertical orientation to show the full body and horizontal orientation to more of the surroundings. It also helps to use portrait orientation to cut off a wall or an object you don’t want to include in the frame.
Virtual Photoshoot: Full Gallery
Check out some of my favorite shots from the shoot! Although these were still JPEG, certain smartphones let you capture RAW which would definitely help in the post-production phase of this shoot.

Monday Merriment
Infusing grandeur into otherwise drab Mondays with five ideas for the week.
Tumblr media
I.  Surely, many of you have seen the meme floating around poking fun at celebrity chefs who are providing fans with ‘pantry recipes’ including obscure ingredients like, “Madagascar vanilla, hemp milk, and a single feather from a dodo bird.” Admittedly, when asked for pantry recipes I had similar concerns. The ingredients I keep are unlikely to be what the novice Corona cook has hanging around. A friend, who is an equally amazing person and chef, decided to remedy this by getting down to the very basics and sharing a versatile recipe that calls for grocery store frozen puff pastry combined with any vegetable, herb, and cheese you have on-hand. Chef Preeti Mistry, of Top Chef and Juhu Beach Club fame, took her Instagram followers step-by-step in creating a delicious savory tart with the radicchio and gruyere that she already had in her fridge. Here are the steps: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees and defrost frozen puff pastry (Preeti recommends Dufour). 2. Marinate radicchio with a squeeze of lemon, a splash of olive oil, and salt (or whatever vegetable you have like arugula or spinach). 3. Roll out puff pastry and cut each sheet into two squares, then spoon on a thin layer of spread like onion jam in the center leaving a half-inch around the edges free to fold over (even something like teriyaki sauce or a thicker salad dressing will work as a base). 4. Spread any grated cheese evenly over the spread. 5. Place your marinated vegetable and any chopped herbs you have in the center of the square (unnecessary if you don’t have any). 6. Fold up the pastry edges and wash with a lightly beaten egg if you have one to spare (if not, you can use milk). 7. Bake for 15-20 minutes. Serve!
Tumblr media
II.  Online dating... Something I wistfully romanticized during my last few relationships. I actually missed the ritual of casually swiping on strangers with few expectations - except the possibility of meeting my soulmate. Now that I’m back at it, I can confidently say that it’s a hot mess. Albeit one that is the only option for us singles in the wake of quarantine. While I’ve had little luck, one of my best friends seemingly hit the dating app lottery. After a brief back and forth interaction via Hinge, a beautiful man asked my friend if he could ‘take her on a date’ by ordering her dinner from a local restaurant and then ‘meeting’ over FaceTime while they ate in the safe confines of their own homes. She chose pasta from A Mano, and he picked something in his neighborhood. Though still in the early stages, it’s fair to say they hit it off and have progressed officially to quaranbaes. I love the idea of replicating this date with your latest Bumble crush, or even friends and family. Supporting our restaurants has never been more important. Pro Tip: Order directly from your favorite place rather than using a delivery app so that all proceeds go to the restaurant and its staff.
Tumblr media
III.  Speaking of FaceTime dates (which are slightly more intimate than Zoom), you might be asking yourself how to hold your phone while gracefully eating or cocktailing virtually... Well, lucky for you I have the solution! My friend Melissa gifted me with a Selfie Cork for Christmas, and I had no idea what to do with it until now (I’m not much of a selfie person, but if you are then you doubly need this apparatus). Simply place the $10 cork in a wine or spirits bottle and then set a timer to take photos or engage with friends as if you had a tripod for your phone. Genius! And so much cuter than a selfie stick.
Tumblr media
IV.  If organizing your spice drawer and cleaning out your closet aren’t amongst the more appealing options for keeping busy right now, I have a bigger challenge that will reap a much higher reward. Re-tiling your floors! I know this sounds absurdly difficult, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Peel and stick tiling allows you to upgrade your flooring without traditional ceramic and grout. This option is particularly perfect for those of us who are renting and crave a more bespoke aesthetic. Check out FloorPops for a range of options.
Tumblr media
V.  The second I heard that masks will be required to enter many stores in California, I went to Amazon to find anything that would work. With shipping dates for everything from actual masks to bandannas reaching well into June, I realized I’d have to dig a bit deeper to find something in time. Forbes put together a comprehensive list of where you can find masks, the best among them being Etsy. Here are a few of my picks: African mud cloth, glittering paillettes, understated gray linen, and classic black. But, without hesitation, the ultimate in mask chic goes to my friend Elizabeth Mitsky of Palatine Hill Designs. Typically, Elizabeth does darling custom monogrammed pieces for home and child. In the wake of COVID, she’s created a line of masks that are $18 per piece including your initials. Please email her at [email protected] for options (like the above photograph) and to place orders.
Have a wonderful week! xx tt

All of the essential gear fit for your next vacation
As you head out on your summer vacation —or any vacation —make sure you are prepared. Here is the actual gear that we pack up and take with us whenever we hit the road (or air).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vacation planning
We all bring tech on vacation. Having just returned from a spring trip, this is the gear that I brought with me —and recommend —that got me through a near week-long trip without hiccup.
Zendure SuperTank
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zendure SuperTank
The first we needed when heading out on our vacation was a reliable battery pack. This was going to be essential when we were in the car, in the air, or wherever we end up. We couldn’t guarantee we’d find power so a battery —and a big one at that —was crucial.
youtube
After our initial review of the Zendure SuperTank we knew this was the one we were going to bring along. It is massive —the largest allowed on planes —and had four ports including multiple USB-C. That was enough for us and our travel partners do ensure power for our phones, watches, cameras, tablets, and computers.
It is also quite small and portable compared to most other battery packs of this size. It slipped easily into the side of our bag and we were off.
After a wildly successful crowdfunding campaign, the SuperTank is now available to order for $99.
Nikon Z 7
Our iPhones are exceptional cameras. They get better each year with each new phone and each iterative iOS update. There are still times though when we want to get just the best images possible. Whether it is low light or a distant subject, we have to turn to our dedicated shooter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nikon Z7 Mirrorless camera
For us, that camera is the Nikon Z 7. We reviewed this camera when it launched and what makes it so perfect for our vacations is the fact it is so compact. We need a camera that is far better than our iPhone but without bogging us down. Z 7 is a mirrorless full-frame camera that is small enough for us to bring with us while not being overly burdened.
It has a massive 47MP, a growing lineup of new Z lenses, in-body three-axis stabilization, 4K video, and much more. It pairs to your iPhone via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi which make it great to either transfer images after you shoot them for quick sharing or controlling from your iPhone to get the great selfie.
The Nikon Z7 is available from Nikon authorized reseller Adorama with no tax collected on orders shipped outside New York and New Jersey*.
B&H Photo and Amazon are also Nikon authorized resellers who sell the Z7.
Zendure SuperPort
With a giant battery like that you need a great charger. Luckily Zendure thought the same thing. The SuperPort is a four-part multi-charger capable of up to 100W of power output. The SuperTank allows for 100W in so they go great together and is the fastest possible way to power up your battery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zendure SuperPort 4 ports
Unlike other multi-chargers from Anker, Satechi, RAVPower, or Aukey, Zendure took a different design approach. Rather than stacking all the ports on top of one another vertically then expect users to lay it on its side, Zendure started with a horizontal charger. It is flat and wide similar to an old MacBook Air external SuperDrive with all ports side by side. It is exceptionally convenient and easy to access.
When we travel, it seems we have more gear than ever that needs to constantly be charged. Our cameras, phones, smart watches, battery packs, tablets etc. Even if you go with the minimum for an Apple fan with just an iPhone and Apple Watch, if there are two of you (or more) you will need a few ports to utilize.
The four provided by SuperPort are great, two of which are super fast USB-C. That means we can leave our MacBook Pro charger at home and just rely on this for almost everything.
SuperPort 4 is also available to grab for $69. Don’t forget the 100W cable if you plan to charge your SuperTank at full speed though.
Insta360 OneX
If you are looking for more stylized photos and videos, we recommend the Insta360 One X.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This 360-degree camera shoots both photos and video and has a huge array of different effects. Create Matrix-inspired Bullet Time videos that appear as though time has frozen. Or sped up videos that slow down and rotate the camera’s perspective after the fact.
The intelligent software also is able to remove the selfie stick so it appears you are just standing there in front of the camera with nothing in your hand. This is a super fun device that we even took SCUBA diving with the added housing. Stay tuned for a more in-depth review soon.
It is available to purchase from Amazon for $399.
LaCie Copilot
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whenever you are traveling and taking pictures, you need a backup. The LaCie Copilot was co-developed in partnership with DJI. It allows you to easily clone and backup any SD card or USB enclosure to the internal drive. We always worry about losing our camera or our footage so being able to back it up with the Copilot is really reassuring.
It is ultra-rugged with the silicone enclosure so it is fitting for any adventure you take it on.
Grab a 2TB version on Amazon for $349.
Moment Lenses and Nomad case
If you don’t want to take a whole camera with you but still want to elevate your images, try pairing your phone with a lens. We travel using the Nomad Rugged Case on our iPhone XS Max and use several different Moment lenses in conjunction. They have a wide angle lens, a fisheye lens, a 2X tele lens, an anamorphic lens, and a macro lens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nomad Rugged Case with a Moment lens
Each lens can be mounted to either the wide-angle or tele lens of the iPhone which can produce some great images. For example, if you put the tele lens on your wide angle lens you get 2X zoom with a wider aperture which results in less grainy pictures.
The Superfish fisheye lens is also quite stylized and is great in tight spaces or expansive landscapes and nothing captures pictures quite like the ultra-wide anamorphic lens.
The Rugged Case from Nomad is available for $49.95 and Moment has a variety of lenses available from its site.
Tile Pro
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tile Pro
Tile launched new trackers in the fall of 2018 including the new Tile Pro. Tile Pro is a great accessory to take on vacations to make sure you always have your gear with you. If you accidentally leave a bag behind, or your camera somewhere, Tile can help you find them.
The updated Tile Pro will work from over 300 feet away and is louder than ever. The battery is also replaceable so that you don’t have to worry about it dying on you.
Pick them up from Amazon.
HomeKit accessories
Smart home accessories aren’t always what you think of when you think vacation but they really do add a certain peace of mind. Leaving your home unattended can be worrysome if someone would break in or another emergency occurs and you aren’t aware.
There are three accessories for our home that best relieve that uncertainty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
August Smart Lock
First, the August third generation smart door lock. This HomeKit enabled lock not only gives you all the conveniences of a smart lock such as auto unlock as you approach, but you can be notified any time the lock is used.
If someone opens the front door, you will see that lock open regardless if its an intruder that picked the lock, a neighbor watering your plants, or a maintenance person coming to do a repair. Regardless, it is always nice to know when your door is locked or unlocked —and that you can unlock it if someone needs to get in. It is available on Amazon for less than $200.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We dig the HomeKit-enabled Circle 2 from Logitech. It comes in at around $170 and is a great value for the features. It is water resistant so you can place it outside your home or you can place it inside and always know what is going on.
The last home-monitoring accessory we have is a HomeKit smoke detector such as that from First Alert. The OneLink Smart Smoke Detector will alert you wherever you are if smoke or CO should be dected in your home. That that point you can jump on your security camera to see what’s happening or unlock the door for a neighbor or friend to get inside —assuming whatever is happening is minor enough you don’t need to immediately call emergency services.
Peak Design Travel Bag 45L
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If there is one accessory we’d be hardpressed to go without it is the Peak Design travel bag. There are several bags they put out such as the Everyday Backpack or Everyday Messenger but for a vacation we pack up our 45L Travel Bag.
This giant backpack has several optional packing cubes that you can store your camera, clothes, shoes, tech accessories, and toiletries in which fit right into the bag. There are countless handles and hooks to clip on additional gear, straps that can be tucked away and hidden, expanding pockets for water bottles or small tripods, and much more.
it is a brilliantly designed bag that can fit everything we need and still fit under an airplane seat.
Grab it, or any of the packing cubes, on Amazon.
